Halfway through the episode I was like “what the fuck????” I thought it was just a modern take on the detective noir genre and now I have no idea what’s going on 🤣 EDIT: didn’t even think about how he caught a fly mid-air with chopsticks in the first episode, definitely feel dumb not thinking more about how insane that is

This show was not marketing widely before it’s premiere, and that might be because they didn’t want Colin to have to sit for interviews and lie about the type of show “Sugar” is-specifically, NOT a updated film noir. Indeed, I tuned into “Sugar” believing it to be a detective/noir series; and I may not be interested in watching to the end if it turns out to be a supernatural or vampire show. I’ll probably stay if it’s sci-fi/AI or alien. We’ll see.

Well….there you go…
Catching a fly in mid-flight with chopsticks (episode 1) is super-human. Also, metabolizing alcohol at 50 times the normal human rate (episode 2) is ridiculously super-human. Being fluent in Japanese, Arabic, Spanish and English is not super-human but it's very impressive for a PI. The tech that he uses to hack cars so quickly is some sci-fi weirdness and that group that he and his handler are part of is next level weird. The group is well organized, their tech is advanced and too sophisticated to be a feral supernatural thing like a pack of werewolves or a coven of vampires. But the physiological enhancements rule out baseline human. We know John has parents, a sister and a history including public school and a birthday. I think it's either some kind of advanced cabal conspiracy or alien possesion. But either way, I'm into it and want to learn more.

@JoshJang-jh2qj I rewatched it. I was wrong about the episode, but not the rate. 30 minutes into episode 1 the character stated that his body processes alcohol 50 times faster than normal.

Thanks for reviewing this show. I came here because not a lot of other UA-camrs are taking this show on. I personally am loving the subtle hints (or maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see) towards all the film references. Like the obvious Psycho one to the (maybe) Sunset Boulevard opening sequence of ep2. The driving around in that car so reminds me of Godard's Breathless. And in this vein, when they discussed "just here to observe," it made me think of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire. So my pitch is that they're all angels. Not sure why they lack omniscience, but maybe that'll come later.Their society seems to have an implicit "protector" vibe. And perhaps as eternal beings, they pick up languages through the centuries, and hence John's obsession with old movies as he has been an observer of them at the time of their actual release. But I'm down for aliens or vampires if that's what it takes.
I’d be 10000% happy if you’re right and I’m wrong here. I think that’d be a pretty refreshing twist unlike most other things we’ve seen as of late.

That old typewriter as communication gave me FRINGE VIBES. Old tech used to talk to another world or alternate reality or aliens. I like that. Oh and no one mentioned that square tech in John’s case thats some sort of Alien/Vamp or supernatural something. GREAT SHOW

Good catch on John’s case. Alien/AI/alternate reality theories are starting to make more sense now.
Also if there is a “vampirism side. Here is a thought it could be a mix of alternate reality and/OR. Immortal/alien mix. You can have immortal but not vampire. Think Helix. When Sugar was announced and plot was under wraps. They said it was a Film Noir/sci-fi GENRE BENDER take on the LA private detective story. So imagine if you mix immortals with aliens and throw it in a NOIR/Private eye setting thats genre bending x10 and I love that even more. I was getting Helix meets Fringe vibes in a neo-noir detective story vibes. Helix had that entire well written story arc where by mid-end of season one you were like what there is a secret society group of immortals changing the world. End of Season 2 of helix was like WHOA when yuou saw what Dr. Sarah Jordan did with fertility in the future ,who became immortal to save her in season 1. Mixed with Fringe and the old typewriter tech and the fact the OBSERVERS from the future in fringe were supposed to only OB observe the current and past timeline eras. Of course the original scientist observers developed levels of empathy and sought to shake up their future hence September’s/DoDonald’s and August’s veer off form their mission. BTW Fringe was slightly Noir too. Nothing is what it seems! It also has LYNCHIAN VIBES aka David Lynch think Twin Peaks at times meets mulholland dr.
I’m still feeling alien. There is a photo of Colin Farrell as Sugar with the Griffith Observatory in the background. I thought how interesting that the Griffith Observatory was used instead of the Hollywood sign.

They’re angels. Pay more attention to the things written on screen. ‘Heavens way’ ‘angel food cake’ the talk of the grayness of morality, there seem to be many many more clues pointing towards this than absolutely anything else.

Wow…this episode definitely gave supernatural, secret society vibes. Full moon has traditionally been associated with werewolves/vampires….maybe aliens….but they were all eating human food, they made sure to mention that couple of times. Ruby knowing & covering for Stallings was a big surprise. I wasn’t surprised about Melanie…she’s been repeating Bernie’s rhetoric about Olivia and I think it was her hair Sugar found in the trunk. I’m still digesting. Oh btw, the translation for the big hat/sunscreen line was a bit off…she was speaking Farsi/Persian and actually said … you wear this big hat and put on the sunscreen on your hands, and still when you go outside everything gets/turns small, I don’t like it at all.

They made sure to make it look like a global secret society. And maybe the writers intended the script to be about skin getting tighter than things getting smaller. Either way, I agree with @TheorySmack that it is telling.

This episode took a turn! I'm thinking aliens with Ruby saying they were there to observe, not get involved, and report back. The intercuts of movies with similar situations could be indicating how he learned about human behavior. All of the physical symptoms, injections and insomnia could be difficulty adjusting to the bodies and/or atmosphere. Ruby clearly has access to computer systems a normal person wouldn't have, not even at the highest level of government.

I agree. Halucinating that his arm is bleeding all over his bungalow and shower gave me the impression that he's not right with his body.
@@TheorySmack Ok, I've found another clue. The executive producer is Simon Kinberg whose previous credits include: Invasion, Deadpool 1 & 2, Logan, X-Men, Elysium. There's a scifi pattern here.
I’m getting alien vibes also. The guy he was talking at the party to asked Sugar “How’s your OTHER job going?” Referring to his detective job. So, his main job/mission is observing and reporting back to “who?”. I think Sugar is obsessed with the old detective movies because he’s learning from them. I paused the scene of Sugar in the pool swimming and I don’t see the injury on his arm anymore. It’s only been a few days maybe a week has gone by. But that’s too fast for a human to heal.
This is nuts but there's been 2 conspicuous scenes with flies, which makes me wonder if he's dead????

Sugar’s sister is Djin. The doctor’s name is Vickers. Sugar mentions he’s been to Damascus-before all the trouble. D’Jinn. A Viccar. A Rabbi. And just for good measure, John Sugar was an actual name of a Catholic priest (1558-1604) who was beatified in 1987.
Also, when John met Jonathan and shook his hand, he also bowed. That might be just a weird thing, but c’mon, who does that?
Don't forget he's immune from alcohol.

I'm really enjoying the show; thanks for covering it! I don't have any particular theory but I certainly did not imagine that it'd be supernatural. I was afraid that the twist would be like Shutter Island or Westworld

I have some theories and it's about Johns sister Djen... First it's her name or the peculiar way it's spelled. I did some light digging but found some interesting things. So I guess Nepali "Djen" (or the vernacular) is supposed to mean imaginary. Second, In Arabic it also means angel, demon, or spirits ECT. But that's pretty much it of my sleuthing. Oh and bonus interesting fact. The name of the actor who plays Johns sister is listed in IMDb her name is Maeve Whalen.

Definitely loving this series, very well acted and cinematography of modern LA brings you right in. I’m just going let the series mystery play out and hope these creators keep me wanting to click on the next episode.

My early opinion is not that he's a vampire, but certainly not human. Biggest giveaway for me is his heavy alcohol consumption and telling Melanie that he basically can't get drunk. When she goes on and on about it at her house about all that alcohol in his blood, he stays silent and a little uncomfortable. John is also very systematic, keeping his emotions in check. He is inherently good....almost "too good"?. Add in some strong Bladerunner vibes (that VO narration), the old Noir style way he lives and works, and how he also can detect lying in individuals, and I believe he's an android. Perhaps a person who was either "resurected" or perhaps he's complete created for this line of work. Regarding the Vampires thing....I believe that the organization, who the "agents" are all at the party, are a collective of unique individuals, of which some could be vampires, but not Sugar. They all have different or unique talents.
Too soon to know, but you gotta love a show that the murder mystery is taking 2nd place to the mystery of how the lead character really is, who he works for, etc.

I think this may be something along the lines of Shutter Island or A Beautiful Mind. That Colin Ferrell's Sugar is imagining he is a detective or spy, because his mind can't handle the fact that he did something terrible in his past. Or because he's suffering trauma associated with the death of his sister.
John references old Hollywood detective movies. Maybe that’s who he studied to be more believable as a finder of people…🤷♂️
I think it's AI related, mostly because you use a "Large Language Model" (LLM) to train one, which is used to create it's artificial neural network. That would explain why they are all polyglots, keeping the notebooks, and why the need to enter them into the mystery typewriter. Also, a polyglot is not only the name for a person who speaks multiple languages, but a term used to describe a computer program that can be compiled in multiple languages without being re-written.
So... Russian Manchurian Candidate-esque spies that have been chemically/biologically augmented? Connection to former/corrupt Border Patrol stuff? Maybe connection to Hollywood and the movie industry to spread propaganda ala conspiracy theoryland?

I’m going alien and muilty versus. Seem like his main mission is to watch them. He talks about humans as them. But that time he dropped the phone it split visions. He talks to ppl in one conversation, he sitting in the same conversation he’s standing he has a water in his hand then he doesn’t.
I feel like vampire would be cooler than alien, but he be going out in the sun.... but yeah, as others have already said, I definitely missed the significance of various red flags in the first few episodes (catching the fly with chopsticks... his not being affected by alcohol) until I saw others pointing it out online

I know that most people think the Big Mystery is that Sugar, Ruby & company are either aliens or vampires. I’m hoping that neither theory is right, and that there is an “AI” element in play. It won’t be as big a shock-but, I’m at the point where I want my entertainment a little more grounded in fact or science.
Now, dealing with what we’ve been given: the photography is breathtakingly beautiful. I visit LA often, and it’s never looked so good on film. I also love the blue Corvette, and Sugar’s empathy for people. That last item may lend itself to the Alien theory, and Sugar being on Earth to observe a less-developed society & cultural. So, if the show is about either Aliens or Vampires; please let it be Aliens.
The mystery about Stallings vs. Ruby may speak to two groups of Aliens-bringing their conflict to Earth. That would be a twist that works for me.
Again: I want the show grounded. I’m sick of fantasy, superheroes, and the supernatural. That’s my personal taste, and what I hope this show is about.
I understand where you’re coming from. Personally I just want them to tie this all together nicely regardless because I’m enjoying the show a lot!
Don't you find it odd that Ruby scolds Sugar about feeling things? Maybe that leans the theories more to AI in human bodies, or something like that.

I haven't read all the comments but, I am thinking that it could be some kind of 'watchers' who look out for humans in either good or bad ways. Angels like in "Wing of Desire" or The Adjustment Bureau". Long live humans, like "Highlander". Or some beings who are out of time or from another universe. I really hope it is not aliens or vampires, that has been so overdone, I hope it is more creative than the same old, same old. When I saw the black box & her typing I actually thought of the Enigma code machine from WW II. That maybe it was some new retro high tech version of it.

Hey everyone,
I wanted to post this to avoid confusion.
I have accepted a new job and have also made the decision to go back to school to complete my degree.
This is going to pull me away from UA-cam pretty heavily.
I do still plan on making content, but it definitely won’t be like it has been because I simply won’t have the time.

I’m thinking Angels or Aliens.
Has anyone considered that he might be a Djinn? Djinn were ancient mythological beings from the middle east. Fallen angels or demons of some sort. I am no expert but I did some research and in my mind it kind of fits..I got the idea because of the spelling of his sister's name, Djen. That was the first thing that came to mind. Spelled differently but?? I'm having fun trying to figure it out but these short episodes, once a week are making me crazy. ; ) Opinions?
I think it's gonna end up with "human friendly" AI tech. Apple loves that. It's AI era right not vampire or werewolf stuffs are cool anymore. idk. Also I am considering why camera focus moon all the time when it appears. Maybe this is just for confuse minds. After watching Episode 3 and your video, this show now reminds me of Dark City vibes.
Alright I’m just gonna blurt out my binge theories.
-Does it seem like the dog is supposed to be the stereotypical “damsel” from the old noir films that inspire a lot of the show.
-Are people saying it might be aliens? Studying humans, good at reading people, affinity with animals? Seems goofy but has potential.
-Anyone think that Olivia brother might too much of a misdirect for him to have something to do with it? Or is writing getting predictable
