Exactly, the phonetics are different. Even then, some of them, like I mentioned in my comment really aren't that different using "enough" and "Sean" as examples. H as a phonetic modifier exists in English too.

It's a different orthographic system...everyone keeps going on about "how little sense Irish names make". They're from Irish Gaelic, so of course the spelling rules aren't the same as English.
Mauve is pronounced as you said it isn't.. the Irish one is spelled Meadhbh or Meabh depending how Irish the parents decided to be.. you'll find that a lot with names e.g. Eoghan/Eoin, Orfhlaith/Orlaith/Orla, Iarla/Iarlaith etc..
All Irish people (like me) find these names SOOOOOOOO easy and no offense but these guys are destroying these names. No Irish person (that I know. And believe me, I know a lot) spells there name "Mauve". That is a colour. It is Maeve, Méadhbh or Méabh. But the origins of these names are Irish, a different (and very difficult) language. No hate
It pissed me off so much when Joel was like “I wonder if Irish people find our names weird?” LIKE NO IRISH PEOPLE ARE USUALLY MORE FLUENT IN ENGLISH THAN THEY ARE IN IRISH. MOST OF US HAVE NON IRISH NAMES. JUST BECAUSE WERE IRISH DOESNT MEAN WE DONT UNDERSTAND BASIC ENGLISH NAMES??? Like wtf
Ya do realize that Irish is a separate language and they use Irish grammar rules. The Irish only use 18 letters from the alphabet These letters do not exist in Irish j, k, q, v, w, x, y, z, Letter combinations bh or an mh create the V sound. There is no K in the Irish language so whenever you see a word like Celtic it’s pronounced with a hard K So I hope that helps you out when you’re looking at a foreign language. Being BRITs you should be a little careful when you deal with Irish culture considering the history
You do know that Irish is a different language which is why Irish names are spelt differently and follow different rules... it’s not weird, it’s just not english.
Haha!!!!! The English stole some of our letters {j,k,q,v,w,x,y,z} during the ~50,000 years of oppression. So we made do with 22 in our native language. So we make sounds from the stolen letters with the ones we have therefore 'v' is 'mh'. In reality Gaeilge is less irregular than English.
The majority or not all of people I know (I’m Irish) don’t find American or English names hard or pronounce. We’re fluent in English and we learn Irish in school from the age of five but a lot of Irish people are better at English than Irish and leave school without knowing how to have a conversation in Irish. Gaeltacht regions (mostly Irish speaking parts of the country) are a different story though, the majority of people born into these regions are fluent in both languages.
I know in Northern Ireland it's pretty awful, because there's so many people with Irish names but also people with weird, unique English names and everyone has just got to the stage where they just guess the pronunciation 😂
So many ppl are complaing about their names being scattered.. Yess guys they're from another language.. But this video is about them as british ppl reacting to irish names. So thats why.
