I am so beyond glad I’ve found your channel! I love that you include queer books in your list. I love, love, LOVE fantasy and cozy fantasy academia vibes always hit me hard around this time of year too! Happy to find a new channel to sub to 😊 Happy Reading!
I would highly recommend The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. It is set in our world but has a beautiful magic system that is very unique.
I just read and LOVED Babel as well, and I haven't read A Deadly Education, but while reading Babel I was reminded a lot of Vita Nostra, which is another magic school dark academia that has a LOT to say. Loved it a lot, and definitely would be perfect for winter as well! ❄❄
❄️❄️❄️ I loved this video!! 💖🥺 I am really excited to read the starless sea and continue with the throne of glass series, So excited to read empire of storms!🥰
ahhh my break with reading throne of glass accidentally got so long lol I really need to go back to it! and the starless sea is also one I’ve tried reading several times but just can’t get into it 😭
The controversy around the Scholomance series sounds really silly. It is one of my absolutely favorite YA series (so maybe I’m biased on its quality but definitely not on the validity of its controversy lol) I hope you read it. Can’t wait to read some of the other books you talked about. Great list.
Hiiiiiiii!!!! Love your video and I've written down some of the books you showed that I was really interested in. I've originally found you as a way to start my own book channel and I'm exited to watch more of your videos!!!!!
Fairy Tale is so good. I don't normally read Stephen King because they scare me too much. But this book is so good! You will be in love with the dog and the references to fairy tales.
this plant in the „head“ in your bookshelf - soo beautiful🍃 and the graphic novel sounds so great🥰 love potion‘s also a book I NEEEDD , riight noww omg❄️
I haven't read Babel (yet) but I don't think it's that similar to A Deadly Education beyond the school setting. A Deadly Education is very action and plot based, it's about survival in a harsh environment that's set up unfairly. It does criticise the magical society's elitism and how it prioritises rich kids. While it is an important theme, it's not what the book centers on necessarily. Neither it does on being a person or color, the school is very international so there are kids of all different backgrounds and countries. Of course, lots of care needs to be taken when writing story like this to make sure the representation is respectful. I think this was attempted by Naomi Novik, even if it wasn't perfect and the controversy was blown out of proportion. The Betrayals was an intriguing read, very complex and full of morally grey characters.
All these magic school recommendations and I AM HERE FOR IT!!! I'm so excited to hear your opinions on Fairy Tale by Stephen King (especially since I like Misery but wasn't suuuuper impressed) & The Betrayals because those sounded AMAZING. Also, I need to pick up A Far Wilder Magic... the cover... the premise ugh it sounds so good.
The controversy over A Deadly Education is a case of people noticing diversity and picking apart a good effort, when those same people don’t go after, say, the latest Emily Henry romcom for doing absolutely nothing to challenge the white heteronormative implicitly-Christian status quo. Naomi Novik is Jewish and probably has something to say about a minority experience. Also, it’s a major story point that El doesn’t have friends and spends a lot of time in isolation. I’m unsure of how she would have observed anyone else’s culture, you know? Then again, it’s also common for people to go after Jews for not being “enough” of a minority when they want to invalidate us. I would make up your own mind about it.
Yes people ripped this book apart for trying to be diverse while adoring maany romance books about white characters and SJM books & Blood and Ash series. Sure constructive criticism is fine but it should be constructive and should apply to all books not just ones some people deemed "problematic". Would it better if Novik just wrote a school with all white students? Then people would've criticised for not having diversity.
@@violaivy I think lots of readers (younger ones especially) look for every minority character to hit every facet of “representation,” when that’s not how real people actually present themselves or interact with each other. I was actually a bit impressed that Novik mentioned the non-Western character names in passing without making a big deal about it.
Nooo what have you done?? As if my fantasy tbr isn't long enough already! Thank you, I suppose I'll have to add more because a lot of these sound very good and I adore your recommendations and your channel so much 😅 (Can't wait to hear what you think of them)
❄️ I‘m new on your channel after I saw you in The Book Leo‘s recent video ☺️ If you haven’t picked it up already, I‘d highly recommend Jessica Townsend‘s Nevermoor series, a cozy fantasy set at a magic school! ✨
A new video from you, yeah! :) I do like to read fantasy books but I just don't do that often enough. I usually did read a lot more fantasy when I was a teenager. But in October and November (and December) I have been readin The Lord of the Rings for the very first time and really enjoyed the journey so far. Stephen King is one of my favorite author but I haven't read (and do not own) his newest novel yet.
Ahh loved this videoo!! I really want to pick up new books but i have started university and have so much work, on top of that i still have my halloween reads that im about half way through as i havent been able to read then due to the work...i reallt want to stsrt a fantasy so i think i will pick up the wicked king by holly black as i already have it on my shelf aha...anyway my little ramble over aha x♡x ❄️❄️❄️
I'm planning to read The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series (it's fantasy) but we'll see if I'm going to ACTUALLY read it lol. Now I'm intrigued by that Stephen King's book, I haven't read anything by him either. And I may pick up The Betrayals because I tried reading and had no idea what's going on and my adhd brain doesn't like confusing first chapters, but I might give that book another chance. 🙃❄❄❄
Oh my god fantastic list ❄❄❄❄ Really curious though, what is the Nonfiction title about the research journey you mention in the video, really want to check that out? ❤
Zero controversy with Deadly Education - just read it! The third book in the series just arrived in September (The Golden Enclaves) and it's a great YA book, if not the best i've read in a very long time. Also absolutely spectacular as an audiobook.
I love your channel. You know I speak Dutch pretty well. I lived in Terneuzen for three years as an American. I wrote a novel called Dutch Coffee Shop. I can't wait to visit Holland again one day.
Hi! I see that you have the Occult book by John Michael Greer in your bookshelf. Have you read any of his fiction? "The Weird of Hali: Innsmouth" is the first in a very cozy magikal fantasy series he has written. It has tentacles ^^
I would love to win the graphic novel! It looks good and I would just be grateful to receive a free graphic novel 😊 I also read Mooncakes and I loved the art style!
Hi! I want to share with you about one book: "KAYAN KOLLYN- The spiral of the Ellmott & messenger of the secret." a great fiction of adventure, mystery, ART, an ancient CRAFFARTT, and science. once you read it, you definitely love it, because it speaks about all dimensions of life, without the barrier of the beliefs and social divisions. Love your content

The Poppy War was fantastic! I picked In the Shadow of the Throne on my Storygraph TBR immediately, it sounds right up my ally 🍓

Ahhh yes I’ve heard of that one too! Heard it was quite dark and depressing though
Your voice is so soothing 😌 ✨️

You're right, Locke and Key was written by Stephen King's son Joe Hill. (I find Joe Hill to be a far superior writer than King lol).
