There are some other critical elements of course such as optimizing qualitative (content, variety, integrity, etc.) and quantitative (amount, frequency, timing, etc.) aspects of breathing/oxygenation quality, hydration, essential and supportive nutrition (EAAs, EFAs, non-rancid Omega 3s, beneficial biotics, essential vits, minerals, trace minerals, cofactors, targeted nutraceuticals...preferably from whole-food matrices), daily circadian control of light exposure, 'less screen 📱 time, more green 🌳 time' outdoors (also see related: grounding, forrest bathing, etc.), and biome-savvy (e.g., for oral and skin factors) essential hygiene. I steam 3 large brown button mushrooms every day. Dr. Greger has provided evidence that larger mushrooms are richer in nutrients. Sometimes I swap out the large browns for other fresh mushrooms: oysters are meaty, dried shiitakes just require 12 hours soaking and then they can be cut up and added to miso soup with wakame or nori seaweed. Black fungus and snow fungus are tasteless and can be added to that miso soup in heroic amounts. Shimejis can soak up a marinade.
So great to get this information out there. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 18 months ago at the age of 67. I am now eating mushrooms almost every day and take a quality lion’s mane supplement. I wish I had started eating them at a young age. Mushrooms should be in its own separate category in the daily dozen, as well as fermented foods!
I started eating mushrooms every day a few months ago because my immune system system was doing badly. My IgA went from O mol/l to .65(the middle of normal range and I haven’t seen that in 30 years!) My IgM went from barely, barely normal to right in the middle of the normal range and IgG increased too! I just put them in everything I cook. I happen to love mushrooms so it works well for me.
No-till agriculture has been used on more than half of all crops grown in the USA and most of the world for at least the last 30 years. Saves fuel cost, reduces erosion, cuts water loss and helps reduce weed competition.
I eat many things raw but my experience is that unless well cooked they give me gas. The other way I have medicinal mushrooms on a daily basis is powdered. Every morning I make flax balls...I grind up flaxseed, mushroom powder, cinnamon and cloves, add a few dates and fresh thumb of ginger, blend again, then add a banana coin or a few blueberries for enough moisture to form balls. Lol, it's like cookie dough for breakfast. I arrange the balls and remaining banana on my plate to make a smiley face bc why not :D I get the powdered shrooms online... it's a 7 shroom blend and packages lions mane as well. It's organic. I've ordered from znaturals for years, quick ship. I also have their 7 shroom blend coffee and only use a fraction of the recommend per cup.
Oh and to add... since you have such a wonderful handle about always learning ... znaturals also has wonderful nutritional descriptions of their items. I've just been a customer for about a decade....
There's fairly high levels of agaritine in the wild precursors of Agaricus bisporus, the cultivated white button/chanterelle/brown mushroom/cremini/portabello mushroom. Cultivated varieties have little, and cooking reduces it further. Cook mushrooms because they're much tastier, but a few raw white buttons on a salad won't pose a health risk.
Dr. Greger. I just heard a podcast with Paul Stamets who indicated something dire about portobella mushrooms, but he wouldn't divulge exactly. I have been joyfully adding portos into my lentil veggie soup which is a mainstay for me and now I have concerns. Would you be so kind to look into this for your community. Thank you.
FYI: if you never eaten a particular mushroom specie before, especially raw, TEST a small portion. i found that i am allergic to raw shiitake mushrooms, causing aggravating itchy welts on the scalp and torso that lasted over a week.

Must mushrooms be cooked to be safe and beneficial? I heard that raw mushroom intake might not be good but cannot remember why.

Better question is, why would you want to? :p Consuming them raw will give you basically no nutrition cause of their cell walls are tough.
