Miracles do happen. I followed directions to a T. And have saved a very special plant in the process. Many thanks to your guide! Wish I could post before and after!
This is the clearest video on this that I've seen. I hope you'll make more. I have two violets that I've saved from my mother's memorial service and hope to keep them happy and healthy for a long time.
Thank you for this excellent video. Scary to snap off all those leaves and stem... but watching this whole procedure gave me confidence to do this when necessary.
Wow! I'll try that on my 10 year old African violet with variegated leaves. I may watch your instruction a few more times first. Thank you for your calm assurance and clear instructions! And yes, I saved 8 leaves & the sprout from the original plant...
Thank you SO much for this video! I had a violet with a very long neck and had no idea what to do. I followed your instructions to the letter, and just removed the main plant from it's plastic bag this morning and it's happy, and blooming! I also started two new plants from the little crowns I removed, and they just came out of their bags today too - and look great!
This episode is by far the most informative on transplanting these AF. I'm hoping there is one, (or you make one on transplanting trailers) in the future. I just transplanted two trailers today based on this video. I'll let you know how they are doing in one month!
Best African filing information that I found so far, super helpful answered a lot of questions that I was suspicious would work but did not know. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😃😃😃
That really scared me when you took off all those old leaves. And, yes, I would try to root several leaves in case the original plant dies. I will be re-potting my trailing AV today and I am watching several videos today to get psyched up. Thanks for the video!!
I didn't know anything about violets or how to care for them. Mine had gotten leggy and had quit blooming. I followed your instructions about cutting off the long neck, and three months later, I'm looking at my amazing violet. I did get some fertilizer, and in the next few days it will have at least 30 blooms on it! I've never seen such a happy, healthy violet in my life. Thank you!
I want to thank you so much for your video. I have a now 40+ year-old African violet which I inherited from my Dad and I had no clue what to do with once it started to fade after about 20 years of my care which I guess is a miracle in itself? Anyway, it took some time (maybe a year?) but it is again blooming constantly and looks extremely happy. Again, thank you so very much.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is exactly the information that I was looking for. Great video with to the point instructions. I'm so glad that I found this!
Thanks so much for this video! I’m trying to revive my 37 year old violet from a neck with just a few roots. I ‘m using your tips, a bit like giving it mouth to mouth resuscitation!
What a find! Thank you so much for this quick and information-rich video. I killed two grocery store AVs last year after trying handmade violet pots for first time. I now understand I did about 50 things incorrectly 🙄
I am so very glad I found your video! I have my grandmother's african violets (one purple that is struggling and one pink that is just fabulous!) The violet that is struggling ended up breaking off of it's roots when I moved to my current apartment. I have been trying everything I could find to help it thrive. Today I just repotted the poor thing in fresh african violet soil in a new pot and am following your directions for bagging it. The root itself did not show any rot but I did not cut it and am thinking I may go back and do that. Thank you so much for this though. I will pop back at some point with an update as to how she is doing! I'm really hoping I can save her, she is one of the few thigns I have of my grandmother's (She passed in the late 90's and my mother who is amazing with plants had been caring for her. I, sadly, kill air plants. But I have been caring for them both for the last year and a half and I am heartened that they both are surviving! Here is the hope that I can have both of them thriving!
Brilliant video. I think this will help me save so many of my accidentally root-rotted and drowned violets. Thank you so much for sharing, highly appreciated! :)
The perfect method for long neck violets! I performed it on my violet 2 years ago and she survived and bloomed again. I'm going to do it again since it has a long neck.
Excellent video instructions. I was attracted because it was listed as "Repot and hibernate mature and aging violets for up to four months using the decapitation method of repotting" and I didn't recognize any hibernation instructions.
Thank you Joyce and Ken. I will be watching more of you videos. My AVs are in their bags and hopefully they will be fine:). Your video gave me the confidence to be quite ruthless with my "Babies", have to say I winced the first time I watched your video!
Wonderful video! What was the thing you used to slide the wick up there? Like a dipstick? So clever! I’m always forgetting to wick them before I pot, so I end up dumping it all out.
I got my first violet a few weeks ago and just today did a drastic repot. I removed a bunch of leaves shortened the stem and cute back the roots. It’s now recovering in a 2 inch pot with drain holes and the I placed it in a glass jar. I’m trying my hand at propagating the leaves I removed so we shall see how that goes.
Repotted 12 African violets. After 5 days inside the plastic bags, over half have white mildew. All but 2 or 3 have leaves wilted to total softness. A disaster we repotted and put them in a rack southeast facing window. They got about 20 to 30 minutes of direct light. So sad. Figure we will lose them all. Taking them out of the bags. Trying to remove as many of leaves as possible, but not all.
Is there a right time of year to do this. I have a few plants in a container that was given as a gift after my husband's passing and I really love this as they bloom really well for me. However, now I see the big neck and so I am wanting to do what you have shown and save these precious plants.
Thanks - and a question: This is so helpful, thank you! I got this baby as a gift from a neighbor who was moving and clearly haven't taken good care of it. I'm so happy to be able to give it a little rehab - you're the best! One question about putting the plant under a grow light: - Is it on a timer so the light turns on and off or will the plant be under lights 24/7? If the former, do you have a favorite schedule of lights off and on?
Great video! Can you please tell me how many hours a day to keep the grow light on for? Can I overdo the light?? Thank you for your time and efforts to make this video! A great example of volunteers making a difference!!!!
Very informative. Thank you for posting this. I think my African violets are gone. I may have over-watered them. I had terra cotta pots, and only watered them once a week, but they sort of shriveled up and died a few months ago, and I've been trying to revive them. I think they're about done. I've had them for about 5 years, including two moves, so I kind of wanted to keep them, but I guess I wasn't careful enough.
Thank you for this video and taking the time to share your knowledge 🙏❤️💐🌸🌼🥀 For the month that the repotted av is in the bag, if it gets condensation on the inside of the bag do I open it and let it dry out? Thank you again Blessings to you and your family
This video is great. Are the plastic bag and fluorescent light necessary for this to work? Follow up: Will a really thin bag work just as well? How much do these two things change the outcome?
Do you have to have grow lights when you repot the african violets. My mother passed away in Dec. 2019 and I have her african violets and do not want to kill them, but, they do need to be repotted. I have them in my dining room and they get great light there.
I have some very small violets with long necks which are not as robust in leaves as this example. Can I still apply the same principle in trimming down and repotting? Where can I send you pics for your advice?
I have violets in a south west window One plant bloomed beautiful but the other ones have no flowers on them Have I done something also can I leave these plants in this window for the winter as I do not have a north window.
Hello my African violets have grown three in one pot how do I separate them to put each one in its own pot? What do I do to the routes to separate them? Thank you in advance
Please, more videos like this! I gave up on my AVSA membership because I don't have time to read all the conflicting information, but would gladly subscribe to a channel.... Great video! I have a couple of violets that are getting long necks on them but they are straight up and not leaning. What causes this and should I worry about it? Other than that they seem healthy.

Thanks for the info, easy to follow. I also love the couple references to nerds. Awesome
I loved the "nerds" comments too. It gave that lady a bit of street cred!
I thought the nerd reference was a bit odd.
Best African filing information that I found so far, super helpful answered a lot of questions that I was suspicious would work but did not know. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😃😃😃
young lady, what an absolute great video, exactly what I was looking for to (fix) my wife’s African violet, let the good times roll!

What a find! Thank you so much for this quick and information-rich video. I killed two grocery store AVs last year after trying handmade violet pots for first time. I now understand I did about 50 things incorrectly 🙄

You almost make cry, looking at the poor violet being striped like that.😭✌️
Thank you; very helpful. Do I really need to tent?
Wow..best video yet on long necks..thank you so much!
Wish the camera was better quality but the information is great. Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much. I repotted them a few years ago but not with this excellent information. Now I know how to repot properly. Thank you
Wonderful video! What was the thing you used to slide the wick up there? Like a dipstick? So clever! I’m always forgetting to wick them before I pot, so I end up dumping it all out.
Very well done video, very informative and concise!

Hi there! Curious on the bagging technique. Do you not water it for a whole month??
Repotted 12 African violets. After 5 days inside the plastic bags, over half have white mildew. All but 2 or 3 have leaves wilted to total softness. Do you need to water it at all after putting it in the bag? Or does the soil stay moist enough for the month?
Such a great site for the violet grower!
Thank You so much for the video!! I was afraid my African Violet was doomed. Quick question though, where do I get the wick?
Thank you for the video. I've repotted 2 violets and bagged them. How do you water for the month they're in the bag?
Once the plant is put into the plastic bag and closed up, do you ever open and water it for the month that it's in the bag????
I want to know about watering as well. I wonder how often she waters it during its month-long hibernation?
Great video, Joyce!
This video is delightful and useful! Love it!
Thanks - and a question: This is so helpful, thank you! I got this baby as a gift from a neighbor who was moving and clearly haven't taken good care of it. I'm so happy to be able to give it a little rehab - you're the best!

I don't have a light. Is putting it on the sunlight good enough?
Thanks for all the info; do we have to use the lights? thanks!
Great video! Can you please tell me how many hours a day to keep the grow light on for? Can I overdo the light?? Thank you for your time and efforts to make this video! A great example of volunteers making a difference!!!!

I repotted a few violets after watching this video several times. A few are really wilting and leaves are looking like they are dying. What do I do???
Great video. One question...what if you don't have a light like this? Do you just put it in a window that doesn't get direct light but bright light??

Thank you for this video and taking the time to share your knowledge 🙏❤️💐🌸🌼🥀
For the month that the repotted av is in the bag, if it gets condensation on the inside of the bag do I open it and let it dry out?
Thank you again
Blessings to you and your family
Can/should you use any rooting hormone if the plant had (??) root rot, or root bound? Thanks!
During that first month, will it need to be watered again?
Just the information I was looking for. Don't know what wick watering is, however. It would be great if the video was clearer.
Read about wick watering here: avsa.org/sites/default/files/files/Wick-watering%20African%20Violets.pdf
Great video. Also, would this method work if i place the pot in a well lit window with part light?
Yes. This article may help: avsa.org/sites/default/files/files/Secrets%20to%20Blooming.pdf
November 26, 2019 This pdf is no longer available??
This video is great. Are the plastic bag and fluorescent light necessary for this to work? Follow up: Will a really thin bag work just as well? How much do these two things change the outcome?
That's a great tips...thank very much for the info...wish you success and good health
Thanks for your video, Joyce. Could you give me just one more little detail - the size of the pot you take for repotting?
So I'm to understand you don't have to water it once it's in the bag? The humidity provides enough water?
Yes, that is correct.
Recently watched this to see how to fix my violet. The leaves are drooping and I think I will repot and thin out like you did here. Thank you!

Hi, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have a special violet to do this to today, and you have taken away my fear. Thank You!!!
How often do you open the bag to water it?
If only I had known this in 1982, I would have understood that the beautiful plant that became straggley was not dying, it just needed a little help
I have violets in a south west window One plant bloomed beautiful but the other ones have no flowers on them Have I done something also can I leave these plants in this window for the winter as I do not have a north window.
what kind of bags are those? where do you get them? thanks!
Does it stay in the bag for a whole month? Doesn’t need watering?
I was wondering how to deal with this!....thank u!
Hello my African violets have grown three in one pot how do I separate them to put each one in its own pot? What do I do to the routes to separate them? Thank you in advance

Awesome video. What did you use for the wick?
Do you continue to water it when it’s inside the bag?
Omg. I did not cut the bottom off. I scraped the sides and repot Should take it back out of the pot and cut the stalk ? Help
I had a 10 year old AF that needed repotting b/c of the neck. I followed your instructions to the letter, but after two months, it hasn't set roots and looks terrible! It was very healthy before, so I'm reallllly upset I attempted this. :-(
Some I've heard lately have talked about how rotating your plant is an antiquated way doing things. Idk what t believe now and i have no green thumb and am new to all this. I just know my Violet is about 6 yrs old and has a long curves stem as she has grown. Her leaves have always been small. Idk if that's normal😮
What soil mixture do you use - ? Thank you
Hi AVSA, thanks for this my neglected African Violet needs attention I think it is seven years old and I’ve suffered from AVnon-pot phobia, it’s actually embarrassing the length of its neck, bless it’s little heart flowers on and off. So my questions are about an older violet with good roots a small ish head and about a 3-4inch (in US language) about 9-10ish centimetres long neck which is curvy. Anyway do I pot root neck and all with crown on level?, do I chop the head off if so what length of stem attached to the crown is best?, if I chop the head is it possible to repot the root ball mass too? and is it possible to divide the neck into three cutting as in crown cutting, root ball and centre neck cutting? Thank you love African violets I have one at the moment because I’ve had many in the past and I know I have an addicition to African violets, having one is part of managing my addiction. Lol
What if you don't have fluorescent lightening? I did this 3 weeks and put it in an east window where it will get morning light. It looks like it may be growing babies but it doesn't look to healthy??
Newbie here, why do you put it in the bag? Why does it need to stay there for a month? Thanks!
My violets are large and bloom almost continuously. Could you address why they get these white puffy spots every few months. I spray them with baking soda and water. But in a month or two the spots return. Is this a common violet problem? What is causing this?
What about if I don't have fluorescent light? Can I use sun light?
Can you do this without the bag?
When potting a violet that is not one of your own such as this, is it advisable to handle the violet and then place your hands in a large tub of soil that you will be using for other violets? Seems to me if the violet had possible tiny pests you just contaminated the entire tub of soil and run the risk of contaminating other violets you may pot with that soil.
Love your videos, learning alot
What do you use for propagating seeds? What is in your soil?
This is scary and very surgical, but I'll have to grit my teeth and sharpen my blade ! What i wonder though, is surely a moist, humid air tight bag an ideal breeding ground for rot and mold ?
So happy I found you I grow african violets! - Ruthie
Pople BackyardFarm can natural light rather than florcent light be used?
Yes. Read this: avsa.org/sites/default/files/files/Secrets%20to%20Blooming.pdf
Hi guys just found your channel, where are we going to average person find those wicks? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Very informative and great video! Thank you so much!
Can this method be used in a window sill if you don’t have artificial lights?
Do I water it while in the bag after repotting? Help
Do l water it at all during the month that it is in the bag?
If the bag is sealed, it shouldn't need to be watered.
This video was very helpful thank you very much
What should I do if I am left with no leaves?
Thank you for this video! Can anyone please tell me how long to keep in the bag? If/When to blow back into the bag? If I should at any point water it, while in the bag? Have a 15yr old violet I cherish, have followed the above to the letter (minus the wick), and not sure what's next. Thanks in advance!
And my "neck" was hanging over the basket, prob 12 inches long, and had never been repotted :( Hopefully better late than never.
