- How To Live Chum With Pilchards.
With most of the Atlantic side flats covered in Pilchards, I figured it would be a good tactic to catch some and use it for chum to try and draw in some fish. I used my large bait well (ice chest live well). Since I was right next to the flat, I was able to keep a steady stream of Pilchards swimming around the area. Right now, there is mainly Jack Cravelle, Yellow jacks, and some Mackerel. Of course the Sharks will always be around as it is Shark Channel. Since I was feeling cocky, I brought out the fly rod, thinking I would get in some easy action. I did not.

Raising as a poor kid I used to walk the coast shore line looking for rests of bird nested line for me to undo and have some to fish with. I became very good at it and today still helps. Not always is a total lost if you don't yerk tight. You can show people how it's done and name your tricks/ tips section "Basically Steve" since you're unique channel. Have fun and Merry Christmas!!?
I am probably going to be doing a video doing that. It was how I caught my first Florida fish. Happy Holidays.
Really like this. I'm possibly going to the keys in about 4 months. Can't wait to get on the fish.
You'll be in the thick of Tarpon season. A great time all around.
I've been watching your channel since this past May while planning a trip to the keys. It was an awesome vacation. Can't wait to go back.
Glad you had a good time. One of the main reason I make these videos is to help out visitors coming down.
Great vid as always. You should do a reel of just your bloopers/Mishaps while fishin! Keep up the good work.
What bloopers. I'm perfect. Every cast, hook set, fish landing. Like a how-to manual. LOL. All that stuff is quickly edited out and deleted. LOL.
I really enjoy watching these videos. We're headed down there this weekend and hope to land some mangroves myself. Keep up the great work!
The weather looks like it is cleaning up so you should have a good time. Good luck.
Merry Christmas, Steve. May your stockings be filled with lures, pilchards and chum. lol. Seriously though, have a blessed Christmas, Steve.
Let's Go Fishing! South Florida I though you only get Chum in your stocking if you were naughty
LOL. If that's the case I should have a bait shop full by tonight! : )
Happy Holidays. I have a funny video I want to make about that. We'll see if it comes into fruition.
Awww, you made a Christmas sweater!
Easily converted back to fly backing if you have a free four hours and don't mind losing your vision for the rest of the day.
I have a request: If you haven't done anything like this already, I'd like to see a video detailing the influence of Ernest Hemingway on the Florida Keys. I'm a big Hemingway fan, and I like the Michael Palin histories of Papa's fishing grounds, but I think there's local fishing lore that could be covered in a short video.
Definitely lots of historical points here is Key West dealing with Hemingway. I think he was a part of making Key West popular, but I really don't think it was that huge. He was all over the place so even here was just a small part of his life. Saltwater Experience encorporates a lot of history in their tv program so it does make things more interesting. Not so sure how much of my audience is focused on the literary side of my topics.
Stunned live bait seems to be the most effective chum when using this technique. Love the sweater reference, a true description of what you ended up with. At least you didn't lose the reel.
Merry Christmas, Steve.
Thanks Jim. Finally got the line sorted. I was right about the four hours. Unfortunately i think I lost a piece in the reel as there is no longer any drag. Gotta go through a parts diagram.
Keep up the great work and Merry Christmas to everybody
Gero Kayakin Same, Thanks:-):-)
Happy Holidays Gero.
Cool video, going to try the same as soon as I can scoop me up some pilchards!
It's definitely a great way to get the bite going. No having to wait around.
Your videos are awesome man! Keep uploading!
Will do xVersace_. Thanks for checking them out.
Awesome video man!!! Pelicans there all good fun until you hook one. Hope you sort your reel out soon!! Take care!!!!
Thanks Rodney. I finally got the reel line sorted, but now no drag. Think I lost a piece of the reel.
What a drag Lol I've always wanted to try fly-fishing, one day I will! Take care and all the best for 2017 and hope you catch plenty!!!! Hopefully I get my Christmas Day cooking one uploaded tomorrow!! We cooked 8 lobster and one 6kg Dhufish!!! It was quite a feast!!!
yet another informative vid
Thanks James. I hope it helps some people.
Good video Man U deserve many more subs
Thanks Ryan. Constantly growing is good enough for me.
i.love you're video keep it up
Thanks for watching Jace.
Live chumming pilchards under mangrove lines bring the snook out from under and also tells you if they're there or not.
You got it. Nothing passes up a fleeing Pilchard.
I got a kayak for xmas looking foward to fishing with it
Good deal. Congrats. Your going to love it. Be safe out there.
How do you chum pilchards? Aw pitch them about wow great idea.
It would be helpful to know what depth you are fishing in. Your Oh Shit video was awesome too. How deep are the channels you are fishing there. We have very shallow and brackish water in Estero Bay so not sure all your techniques would be as effective and if I need to seek deeper water. Great video.....
The bigger channels can be up to 25-30 feet with average ones being in the teens. They are basically rivers as they are the waterways for all the water movement between the Gulf and the Atlantic.
Aah tough conditions. The same thing basically happened to me when the spool on my Penn Torque spinner popped off when I was fighting a big blackfin a few months back. fish came off and 400 yards of hand lining later I discovered that the $300 spool was stuck on something at the bottom of the ocean. :(
That would be a seriously sad day. I got the line unsweatered but no longer have any drag. Must of lost a piece somewhere. Need to find a diagram to compare.
Ill have to try this technique with shad for stripers! Looks like it'll work!
Definitely would. Stripers are aggressive feeders.
They sure are... I hope they find the bait before they swim away lol.
Are you all getting any sargassum there? Terrible here in Pompano Beach. From the surf anyway!
hey Man nice vid!!!!!!!! I love your videos, hope u fixed you rod, would like to have one day a channel likes yours, *when i Start*,good vids keep it up :)
Appreciate it Northern. No time like the present. In the beginning, it's all about learning how to do stuff so content doesn't matter. Just start posting. Good luck.
cool videos
Appreciate it Kelly. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Would it be counter intuitive to use a chum bag also? Or would that just call the man in the grey suit faster??
What brand of hat do you use on the water? I'm looking for something that has the flap that covers the neck area. Love the videos!

what is your personal best pelican? I couldn't weight mine😎
This one was just a moderate size. Nothing special.
Dam what a bad one! Great video on the pilchards though.
My favorite time of year when the Pilchards move in. So many options when you have a bucket of nice Pilchards.
hey steve what is your favorite fish species to catch
Fishing It Up. Jack lol that's all he can seem to catch
Ha Ha. It was one video man.
Hey Steve! Can you give me some tips to find some bait spots?
Sure, what area? Post a new comment so that I will see it.
Key West Kayak Fishing I live in the Miami area and sometimes fish in the keys...
He probably didn't see it 😂
Merry Christmas everyone
Shimano 02 Thanks Same to you
15 minutes to spare. Happy Holidays.
U should go try to get some back country tarpon
I've got some videos of that. Lots of misses. Those little ones don't like me. I specialize in the big boys.
A little tip when chumming with them live try crunching them up so they can't swim very good
Phased 2 Fishing but wouldn't the pilchard die
justin fuchs no they would just be injured and fish like injured bait fish
Phased 2 Fishing ahh ok
Yup. That's why I like to bounce them off the front of my kayak. Nothing gets a fish more excited than a wounded bait.
robotnik 99 it’s not cruel in any way. 1. Fish don’t feel pain because they don’t have the pain sensing nerves that humans and other animals do. 2. It feeds other fish that would just eat those fish anyway.
what's the best time to go fishing down there
Cj Perez It all depends on tides, lunar phase, time of year, also weather conditions. But generally sunrise and sunset is the best time of the day. Check out Tides4fishing and it will tell you the best times of the day for fishing in your area!!! Tight Lines
When the wind isn't blowing. Very hard to pick a good month now adays. Used to be Summer time, but this summer it sucked with so much wind.
🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Dont set the hook while fly fishing, you are supposed to strip set .... (keep stripping after fish eats to set the hook)
2nd Good job Aliex
coraldecuba 66 I'm king today
The King. LOL.
hey Steve what horsepower is your motor
2.5 4-stroke.
👍💯💯💯
what's the fly rod and reel
AKA the sweater maker. LOL.
its christmas eve
It's Christmas day. LOL.
do a barracuda.fishing video
I just did that today. Got one. The bigger ones are starting to move on to the flats so will start targeting them. Fun stuff.
Aren't you supposed to break through to you before you get on the water
You can to get some strugglers. I would definitely do that if I only had a few to chum with. I had a ton just next to me so I wasn't too concerned with it.
What fish at 6:00??
Cero Mackeral. Specific to the Keys and South Florida and then to the Bahamas.
Chris Leslie Most people would think it’s a Spanish mackerel, but’s it’s actually a cero mackerel due to the orange stripe that runs along its side.
catch anything yet? JYUST STAAHRTING
Got a few. It's fishing not catching. LOL.
What do you reckon is the tastiest fish in your parts and which one is your personal favorite?
Mangrove Snapper for both. Great tasting, good any way you cook it, and very sustainable. Fights hard too.
the must ask question, did you get anything???? yes check my UA-cam channel
I got a Pelican. Lipped it good. Unfortunately I turned my Gopro off instead of turning it on when I dehooked it. Lots of Jack Cravelles. Fun but lots of work.
Your video should be called, "How to quickly get rid of perfectly good bait for no reason".
That was a bit so-so. You might be stretching yourself too thin. I'm not going to pay for that one.
Break their tail before throwing in the water
RIchard Perez how do you break their tail do you just twist it
1st
Aliex Folgueira Good job
Scored one.
Key West Kayak Fishing 😎😎😎😎uurrayyy I'm breaking my curse Tommorrow wish me luck
Yeah totally not worth it i thought baitcasters were bad you have shown me a whole new level of bs forget the flyrod crap i bet you are still trying to untangle that furball! All because one little part came un glued on that reel 😵😭
kill so many lil fishies to catch 1 or 2 fish? not good
The ratio is about the same for the fish. They can't catch those little speedsters. It is more to get the fish off the bottom and turn on their senses.
I guess that does not apply when you dig out their eyes slap them on the surface of the water and maim them.....
