  • How To Live Chum With Pilchards.
    With most of the Atlantic side flats covered in Pilchards, I figured it would be a good tactic to catch some and use it for chum to try and draw in some fish. I used my large bait well (ice chest live well). Since I was right next to the flat, I was able to keep a steady stream of Pilchards swimming around the area. Right now, there is mainly Jack Cravelle, Yellow jacks, and some Mackerel. Of course the Sharks will always be around as it is Shark Channel. Since I was feeling cocky, I brought out the fly rod, thinking I would get in some easy action. I did not.

    Raising as a poor kid I used to walk the coast shore line looking for rests of bird nested line for me to undo and have some to fish with. I became very good at it and today still helps. Not always is a total lost if you don't yerk tight. You can show people how it's done and name your tricks/ tips section "Basically Steve" since you're unique channel. Have fun and Merry Christmas!!?

    I have a request: If you haven't done anything like this already, I'd like to see a video detailing the influence of Ernest Hemingway on the Florida Keys. I'm a big Hemingway fan, and I like the Michael Palin histories of Papa's fishing grounds, but I think there's local fishing lore that could be covered in a short video.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      Definitely lots of historical points here is Key West dealing with Hemingway. I think he was a part of making Key West popular, but I really don't think it was that huge. He was all over the place so even here was just a small part of his life. Saltwater Experience encorporates a lot of history in their tv program so it does make things more interesting. Not so sure how much of my audience is focused on the literary side of my topics.

  • @JimMFishing
    @JimMFishing 7 років тому

    Stunned live bait seems to be the most effective chum when using this technique. Love the sweater reference, a true description of what you ended up with. At least you didn't lose the reel.
    Merry Christmas, Steve.

    It would be helpful to know what depth you are fishing in. Your Oh Shit video was awesome too. How deep are the channels you are fishing there. We have very shallow and brackish water in Estero Bay so not sure all your techniques would be as effective and if I need to seek deeper water. Great video.....

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 років тому

      The bigger channels can be up to 25-30 feet with average ones being in the teens. They are basically rivers as they are the waterways for all the water movement between the Gulf and the Atlantic.

    Aah tough conditions. The same thing basically happened to me when the spool on my Penn Torque spinner popped off when I was fighting a big blackfin a few months back. fish came off and 400 yards of hand lining later I discovered that the $300 spool was stuck on something at the bottom of the ocean. :(

      That would be a seriously sad day. I got the line unsweatered but no longer have any drag. Must of lost a piece somewhere. Need to find a diagram to compare.

      robotnik 99 it’s not cruel in any way. 1. Fish don’t feel pain because they don’t have the pain sensing nerves that humans and other animals do. 2. It feeds other fish that would just eat those fish anyway.
