The smart brand gets serious with this small electrically-powered SUV, the smart #1. Jonathan Crouch drives it.
    Ten Second Review
The smart #1 reinvents the smart brand for a new era, a compact full-electric small hatch for style-conscious folk who'll enjoy a rather unique Sino-Teutonic blend of EV engineering. The car 'retains the smart spirit' but offers it in a car family fashionistas could realistically justify, with space for five and a range of up to 273 miles.
    Background
Think of smart and you picture a tiny city car. But things are changing. The company is reinventing its profile as a style-led electric mobility brand and that will start with this car, the smart #1.
It is, according to its maker, 'the nucleus of all things to come'. Which means several things. First, that in the future, we'll see bigger smart models than we've been used to - this #1 is a small SUV about the size of a Kia Niro or a MINI Countryman. And second that while the design of future smart models will still be over-seen by parent company Mercedes (hence, for instance, the #1's EQ-style rear light cluster), platforms for the company's cars will in future be provided by the Chinese automotive group Geely, who now hold 50% shareholding in smart. In this case, that means Geely's 'SEA' 'Sustainable Experience Architecture' platform, a chassis also earmarked for a forthcoming compact crossover from Volvo. Big departures then. The smart brand's first SUV, its first five-seater, it's first larger car. What's in store?

Love the new #1 ! But the design of the #3 is better ❤😍

I've gone off it. That front end is characterless like an old model Hyundai. And the screen graphics look difficult to read. Good review as usual

In Australia the MG4 costs less than $40,000 about £20,000. It has a 7 year unlimited warranty. I know which I'd take.

Read the warranty exclusions..then tell me it is “unlimited” 👍

Not a fan of the Vauxhall Adam style roof and the regen isn't controllable as in some cars with paddles on the steering wheel which can vary the strength while driving.

This is very well spec’d electric car for the price and only really lacks more mileage. Electric market is failing though - the lack of infrastructure and high prices for the majority of cars mean unless the tech becomes suddenly cheaper, it’s failing. Plus the insurance cover the electric cars is too high due to unknown future valuations and high repair costs.
You’d be nuts to buy an expensive electric car. This is by far one of the better options.

If the EV market is failing as you say it is, you'd be nuts even to buy this one. £37k isn't peanuts to most people

@@piglet5287 yeah, totally agree - I just believe this is spec wise the only electric car I’ve seen for the segment and price that’s on par with petrol cars.

The best SMART ever built is and remains the FORTWO EQ ! This #1 is just an average car that looks like any other electric car from China.

We have a 451 and 453. We test drove the #1 Brabus today and it’s on a completely different level to any other smart cars before. It is an amazing car and it is very well built. You should test drive it

@@2010SmartFortwo the #1 no longer has anything to do with a smart vehicle. No, I'd rather buy an EQE than drive one of those Chinese cars.

@@dit.p2598 obviously it doesn’t. The cheapest electric Mercedes is the EQA which starts from £49,750. The #1 starts from £31,950. That’s almost a £20k difference…
