In an era of great competitors, two of the greatest faced off and gave everything they had for three rounds, throwing a combined total of 338 punches, with each fighter landing over half of them. This legendary match would come to be known as The War.
Both Hagler and Hearns were elite champions who had developed their own unique strategies and styles.

Fab 4 always get mentioned, i feel like Wilfred Benitez was right up there with them, at the same time... But he never moved up to mw, never fought Hagler.

Hearns was a great fighter and had the ability to be the best fighter around,but when he went against the best fighters he wasn't smart enough to fight his fight and he would fight the opponents fight;see Hearns was able to box and slug it out,but to his demise he would do what the opponent specializes in, and when it comes to a great opponent you should try not to do that.just my thoughts.

according to what I watched it was a breakdown of their fight that I was watching.
Two of my absolute favorites. Really hated to see Tommy get laid out, but he threw his sledgehammer right at Hagler and split his head open breaking his hand in the process. For Hagler the ability to take that punch with blood running down his face and still come forward and stalk down Hearns is truly legendary.

I'm 55 and hagler was always my favorite fighter.
Myself being from Columbia park Maryland I've always respected sugar Ray. But he did not defeat hagler.... not even close.
That 3 seconds played in slo mo, really show how technical of a sport this is... to the untrained eye they are just wildly swinging, but this was a high level game of Rock Paper Scissors, each man was thinking of what the other would be throwing 2-3 steps ahead....

Hagler was robbed multiple times during his career by corrupt judges. Can you do a breakdown of the Hagler vs. Leonard fight? I would like to see how you would have scored the fight.

+l33thaxor So you would agree that Judge Jojo Guerra's scorecard of 118-110 for Leonard was a robbery? That's 10 rds to 2 and it don't make any sense to me no matter how many times i watch the fight. I scored it 115-113 for Hagler.

Without this brilliant breakdown, I'd never know half of what was going on in and out of the ring. Those three rounds were pure boxing and these men are the standard of what boxers should be.

You might also enjoy a bit of Terrible Terry Norris, look him up against John Mugabe, had a very solid fighting style not dissimilar to Hagler in terms of his self belief and aggression.
I remember watching this fight live on HBO it was before pay per view.
This was the fight that convinced me NOT to be a boxer but that showed the absolute beauty of the game. When Leonard was gifted the decision over Hagler I realized that there was much more to boxing than talent.
He was also gifted the draw in the 2nd Leonard fight. Theivery.

Holy shit Hagler’s fluid stance is genius. That makes me think so differently about stance in boxing. Why wouldn’t you have a fluid stance? It gives you an inherent advantage in that you can setup totally unique shots. I feel like that could be the future.

Nate Samuelson everyone has a genius technique this wish they could learn, but the truth is you can’t just pick and choose what techniques you use in your style, it HAS to flow, you have to be able to do it almost perfectly to make it effective in a fight
Being dexterous on both stances is very hard to develop.
I add this to this mention of this fight, this is the only time you'll ever see Hagler initiate a clinch. Hagler can say he wasn't hurt, but he was. This fight also showed Hagler's ability to withstand insane punches that would've knocked 99% of other fighters out.

@@robinpaydon7139 I remember being so disappointed that Tommy had lost another huge fight, but as time went on I remember seeing an interview with the referee in that event, I don't remember his name, but he was a legendary referee and he said it was by far the best match he had ever seen let alone been in the ring to officiate.
Now you can't be dissatisfied when you consider that Tommy had a chronic problem with the bones in his right hand many times in his career. He had the heart of a Lion and he never made excuses when he failed, which is so rare.

He made Hands of Stone fall face down onto the canvas, which was unthinkable and frankly disturbing to watch, IMHO. What an immortal quartet of fighters, I feel lucky to have lived to see that decade of boxing. Much respect to all 4 men.

I'm with you. I'm OK with the scoring of two judges swapping 115-113 scores - but the other judge 118-110 Leonard was an outrageous outlier.
Nope. Leonard won fair and square. Trust me I watched that fight over 50 times. When I saw it live I thought Hagler was robbed but he wasn’t. Haglers fatal mistake was not fighting southpaw from the get go. The minute he switched back to SP he was winning the fight, but it was too late. Sugar Ray is by far one of the GOAT. Hagler top 5 Middleweights ever no doubt, but Leonard beat him.

How would you have scored the fight having watched it 50 times? And, how many of those 'flurry punches in the last 10 seconds of the round that did not land' did you give credit for that were done completely for show? That said, Hagler lost the fight before it even started, for some reason, he allowed the larger ring, and on a 12 round fight. Smaller ring and 15 rounds, Hagler wins. That part has always made me shake my head. RIP Hagler
@@rjelrod Guerra’s 118-110 was ridiculous but 115-113 I feel was accurate. Hagler’s camp agreed to the bigger ring, so you can’t blame Leonard for that. I personally think Leonard won the fight, sorry you don’t. But, it doesn’t matter anyway. It was nearly 35 years ago and the W is in Leonard’s Column. I am a huge Hagler fan and was devastated when he lost.

I feel like you can compare the 4 greats to the 4 elements.
Hagler - WATER - smooth fluid and clean with his technique with no flaws, could adapt to anything.
Duran - EARTH - rugged, tough and yet so crafty on the inside with his pressure and manipulation of the opponent.
Hearns - AIR - fast, hard to reach with a sort of sniper style. If you get too comfortable the tornado will hit 🌪.
Leonard - FIRE - a dangerous kind of fire. Relentless and destructive. Always ready to hit you with accurate painful shots.

Since beginning you have improved my own martial arts through your observations and started many arguments as most people don’t know what falling steps and Dempsey rolls actually look like and teach complete inaccurate versions. Always end up linking to your channel because you actually breakdown what the fights looked like and what the fighters actually said about there styles. I also blow people away with how hard I can hit, probably sounds like bs but to most but you legitimately give the best instruction on form and technique of anyone I’ve ever listened to.

too bad about Hearns hand---I think Hagler still wins, but it might have been an even better fight. Hagler is one of the most misunderstood fighters. People actually think of him as a slugger. He didn't even hit that hard. He was a complete boxer, the most versatile around, and KOed people by grinding them up. Not a big puncher, just an utterly relentless, ruthless machine with good pop

Hitmans approach to the entire fight completely changed after his hand was broken. If he could use his right hand effectively in the second round that cut would have been a lot worse and the fight would have been stopped granting hitman the victory.
All hitman could do in rounds 2 and 3 was jab and dance while in excruciating pain from a broken right hand, his strongest weapon and you still think haggler would have won regardless?

I get off work late and with nothing on, I usually go to UA-cam and lately have been watching the old boxing I remembered growing up. Finding almost every one of my favorite matches of old, you seem to have a breakdown video, which of course I’ve seen these matches a handful of times but watching them with your breakdown brings a whole new perspective. I've watched this before and I'll watch it again. Love the analysis and your delivery: no B.S., no show, just letting the athletes tell the story in the ring. Bravo! I always hated Hearns (being from MA but him telling his team not to tell anyone about the broken hand shows great character.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler was a bad man, in the ring. His punches were devastating! I would love to see the whole Mugabi fight. They only have the highlights on UA-cam.. He got robbed by Anifermo and Leonard... That first round knockdown against Roudan was bullshit, I'm glad they overturned it! Then The War! What a great fight, and it was a fight... Not a boxing match... When hagler went to the corner for the timeout to look at his cut, the Dr. asked him "Can you see?" Hagler responded simply, "I ain't missing him am I?"... Long live The Marvelous One! My favorite middleweight Champ!

Hagler Hearns 1st round, Hagler Mugabi 6th round. 2 of the most savage toe to toe displays of letting your coconuts hang, of all time. Every man should show his son that 6 minutes the day of their 13th birthday.
Those who saw Zale vs Graziano 1 and 2 would argue with you about greatest slugfest. Those fights were not filmed sad to say.

Something else that wasn't revealed until years after the fight that Emanuel Steward shared in an interview was that ealier in the evening before the fight, one of the training staff gave Tommy a leg massage. Apparently Emanuel had walked in on this and was so effin' mad he was beside himself. A massage before a fight is a huge no-no as it zaps all the strength from your legs and takes days to recovery. It completely changed the gameplan for Hearns going in to the fight, and as such was the strategy to war with Hagler instead of trying to go the distance. Made for one of the greatest 1st rounds and fights ever, but one can only wonder what if had it not been for the mistake of that leg massage.
Leg massage plus the broken right hand...imagine how much more epic it could have been!

Each fighter connected over half the thrown punches
Its not x2 because a connection is a connection, it is total punches, and more than half had the two contacting. Its not that each landed 200 or something, its that 200 (or so) connections happened.

Phenomenal breakdown... Hagler was my favorite boxer prior to Tyson hitting the scene. To this day, I still believe Hagler was robbed in the Sugar Ray Leonard fight, by a superficial show from Leonard in the last round.... Would love to see you break that fight down as well. Hearns was definitely robber in the Sugar Ray Leonard fight, which was a shame ,cause then each of the 4 kings would be more or less even. Leonard was not so much better then the others. The were all in the same level.
I would say watch it again. I watched it live first time around and it seemed criminal to give either victory but watch it twice and you will see Leonard was floating like Ali, in the spirit, goading Hagler, setting him up etc. Hagler shouldn't have fallen for it, Leonard exploited Haglers sense of pride, aggression and machismo hence Leonard was more in control even though he took a lot of punches. Full respect to both of them and there is no bias in that as I loved them both. Look up terrible Terry Norris as well, he doesn't get the respect or limelight he deserves.
