The story of the 'extras has another twist because of the problem with the extras Michael Winner had made hundreds maybe thousands of vacuum formed plastic/fibreglass full sized spectators in a few different poses these were to be scattered amongst the real extras to fill the stadium .l was one of a team of set makers hired [l was an art student it was around the Christmas holidays of 1968]to paint faces and garments on these plastic figures.we worked 24hr basis in a very cold stage in Staines,Middlesex delirious from fibre glass resin. We were then given information that the ltalian extras union refused to be sat with phoney plastic crowd .l never ever found out the true outcome of this farcical event.
The Games isn't part of our current DVD release schedule, though it did form a part of the The Flipside event strand at BFI Southbank which is associated with a number of DVD releases.
Smart, funny man, Michael Winner was. What he said about Orson Welles and the AFI tribute is true and well documented: Welles stood there in front of the producers and industry bigwigs and politely denounced them for not giving him work. And when Orson ended his speech those same people gave him a standing ovation.
"The Games" was an interesting, and actually pretty good, obscure and forgotten movie. Didn't make a dent at the box office, or in the public's mind. Ryan O'Neal would get that with "Love Story" released the same year. Probably the biggest mistake of "The Games" was it was not produced to coincide with an actual Olympic Games going on. Released in the "dead zone" mid-way between 1968 Mexico City and 1972 Munich just wasn't a smart marketing move. This was a movie that really needed to be a summer release to coincide with an Olympics. Wouldn't have ensured success, but it would have helped. Since this film is far more "Sixties" in feel than "Seventies" they really needed to get it off the storyboard and onto film in time for a Summer of 1968 release.
RIP Michael - a great storyteller

The end of The Games is a killer. Wonderful lost movie.

There are no current plans for the BFI to release this on DVD I'm afraid.
Winner did come up some great stories on Hollywood actors.
When is this coming out on DVD?
RIP mate
What year was this please?
It literally says 2012 at the start.
