@@Jules-Is-a-GuyI had to laugh so much when that came up. How entitled can you be to complain about a podcaster drinking something while talking for an hour.

Funny thing, that "just be yourself" mantra. I agree with it. However, when it comes to myself, I've had a hard time living up to it. There's some sort of bizarre thing about me where others feel completely free to tell me how awful they think I am. Like, my existence erases the social norm of not just openly calling someone out. Like, of we see a 500 lb fat person, nobody just goes up to them and says "God your fat. What a loser you are." But with me, people feel completely entitled to do these types of things. It's the strangest friggin thing and it's happened all my life. It has led to me being very guarded around others yet being guarded doesn't lead to a fulfilled life or the authentic outward expression of who I am. I am grateful, though, that have a wife and three children who allow me to be me. That's been the life saver. That being said, it would certainly be nice to just be myself openly. I'm tired of living with a bitten tongue, clenched jaw and held breath. The last time I said eff it as just acted like myself, it was in Hawaii for my brother-in-law's wedding. I was having a grand ol time. Laughing, living it up. Then one day my wife comes into the room balling her eyes out and says she just had the biggest fight with her dad. He told her that she had married human garbage. A sad excuse for a man. That I was a freeloader who never worked a day in my life and that my schizophrenic mother was right with her abuse of me. Lastly, be told her that she needed to divorce me. Anyway, thank god for my wife. She had my back and her dad lost out in the end. But it's moments like that that make me more than gun shy to just be myself.

I hear you about the "shunted to the side of your own life bit". I had for me what i thought i wanted, a good solid job in a multinational and i was being promoted. Got to my target level after a few years, and was being paid well. I was seriously unhappy though, mainly because the job career and and house stuff is really not important to me but we are programmed to go for that. I crave and have always been obsessed with adrenaline in sports. And you do not get that in a steady job and career. I get it in sports that i love and am obsessed with. I changed what i was doing when i got a redundancy option and now i've got zero job security and work through agencies only, but i'm making enough money to spend massive amounts of time pursuing what i actually love to do. It has made me far happier, even though sometimes i get a bit of fear about my lack of security. The fear of going back to being in golden handcuffs is even worse, so it does stop me from going back to security.

Great job. Honestly, it seems like you were born for this: face, voice, temperament, intelligence, and personality. I doubt that anyone is seriously offended by your pointing out the stress of being so successful in a relatively short time frame. I have been following you for several years. You started at a very competent level and still noticeably improve each year. I look forward to the new year and your future work.

I think that in that transition place between being and becoming, what is important is to not let that place be a void, but to let that place allow you to find out who you are, embrace that and try it out- be you, try to be who you are, finding the balance through growing through what you go through within that grit grounding place and standing up with grace feeling peace as the shoes of your feet ;) then move, tap into that flow . There's more to it of course, but I do not yet have much to give , as I am busy with it right now, but I appreciate the opportunity to be grateful and trust the process and excercise my faith and allow my perseverance to be a blessing , and trying to let go of the lies of being worthless etc, in order to receive the love I need to be me, and who I am created to be, and to come to truly believe that I am blessed and worthy, and what's beautiful about that is the why , which is to be able to bless others .. blessed to be a blessing 😊

One of the better videos that I have listened to. This compilation should be a learning block in high schools. Much of this wisdom is hard earned and only self evident as we move through life. How nice it would have been to be exposed to these ideas as a teenager.

    • @pn5721
      @pn5721 11 місяців тому +1

Exactly. Kind of an off the wall addition to your observation, but another thing that young people ought to read when they're about 15 is Plato's "Republic" (the Allan Bloom translation).
It's not hi falutin' stuff - it's the story of Socrates getting waylaid by some well born young men and prevented from leaving the city he is about to leave.
He's good naturedly forced to turn back and spend an evening with these young men and what they do is "construct a City in Speech." I'm serious when I say that, had I read it when I was fifteen instead of thirty five, it would've saved me a ton of grief.
By the way, the Straussians think the ending is not what Plato is seriously recommending, but instead he's showing what one gets when one believes one can attain "Justice" - showing the ridiculousness of what perfect " justice" would entail

At the end there, you said you’re not trying to get in the way of your guests etc. which is a beautiful & humble statement. That being said, no one can absorb every moment in your life and hear all the amazing things you have heard from each of these guests on your podcast or behind the scenes. So you sharing your individual insights and allowing others to know and hear stories of your life, perspective, growth, & realizations can also have quite important impact as well. Everyone receives information differently. A lessons can be a statement, like a quote, but the stories are like the legends or myths that are easily received by a variety of people that have all different levels of capacity. In some cases reaches the soul better than written words especially with a variable audience.
Thank you for sharing both pieces ❤️

People who can't enjoy where they are need to learn. Practice mindfulness. Open your eyes and only pay attention to what you see. What you feel. What you hear. Live in your body, not your mind. It's alright to occasionally accept that this moment is enough. You are enough. Then move on to improvement and the journey again.

35:15 Thank you Chris! Much respect. This is exactly where I struggle in life as well. I personally think it has to do with how we as humans tend to prioritize which parts of our lives we manage in quantitative versus qualitative ways and to what extent. If change is the only constant then the bar gets raised or lowered in several aspects relative to external events on both micro and macro levels.

The way I've thought about the "toxic compassion" point has been "the nuance of 'nice' vs 'good'." Often the two overlap, but being able to recognize when they don't, as well as being willing to risk that you've misread things and end up doing neither takes confidence, competence, and some degree of risk-taking.

The articulation that surrounds the topics and ideas that Chris shares is extremely impressive. You can tell he really knows what he’s doing. Might I add, he also has the highest quality audio recordings of all the major podcasts I listen to. Top stuff, love it! ❤

On the 4th point "My mind is a storm", I can relate and it's especially challenging to be proficient. I know many would hear that I didn't have to pay for college, became a mechanical engineer out of high school at 18, bought a house at 20, I'm a 6'2" volleyball player with good athleticism and an impressive vertical, and seem to have my life in order. On the inside however, I've been living alone for three years, have been without hardly any good friends for years, and have been single for four years since Covid happened without even going on a date for the last year and a half. I might have a lot, but I don't think anyone should want to be me. My problem is how to imagine sympathy for my situation, how can someone be sympathetic of a guy who has what I have? How can I even have enough sympathy to respect myself after feeling miserable?

I think position can be better than trajectory if you're a healthy individual who can manage this well and set the right expectations for yourself

I think you are super, I have learnt a great deal about myself and my fellow humans. You are well spoken and I can see you are thoughtful. Wiser and casual convos with a vast range of guests who mostly seem intelligent and thoughtful as well as humble in their mere humaness.. Extremely handsome which was a bonus (I find intelligent people so attractive, even if they butt ugly) Anyheow dont worry yourself on those negative comments I am awesome and can tell you from my tribe. Namaste brother, and a sweet as churr from Aotearoa NZ
