  • All Racing Games seem to lack the fully realistic, simulation damage model, that we'd all love to see. But why? Because the devs would love to give us realistic damage, but they simply can't!

I mean, NFS High Stakes (on PC) had a rather detailed damage model for its time, and they used licensed cars. They went a step further with Porsche Unleashed the next year as well.
Also, its just virtual world; no one is going to really go wreck a car just because they have fun with crash physics. But given how video games development has been devolved as an "industry" (which is very unfortunate, but that's Capitalism 101 for ya), not only developers feel demotivated to do anything, but how they are treated as well. This makes them believe that such detailed work won't be worth of their time or energy.

This is precisely why BeamNG right now has incredible modded multiplayer sim racing communities. The game gets away with damage because it has fictional cars, and a game engine capable of handling the physics at hand. The game's customization going all the way down to the level of letting you drive a bare chassis with no body whatsoever, allows for sufficiently more types of motor racing than any other game period, and on top of this, while we used to lack tire thermals, tire wear, and drafting, this is no longer the case, as all of these missing features have been modded in by the community, and this includes to some extent track limits, hot lap leader boards, and various other racing focused modded multiplayer servers that achieve real competitive racing within BeamNG. Alongside the game engine optimizations of BeamNG's new Vulkan renderer, which has become stable enough in recent updates to easily handle a 6 hour multiplayer session, the experience BeamNG now offers is absolutely unbeatable when you meet the right people and get into these niche communities of like minded BeamNG sim racers. BeamNG is slowly but surly becoming the best Racing game imaginable, but it's number one flaw remains it's image issue and how that results in people just not taking it seriously, because it's the crashing game. BeamNG stopped being just a crashing game the moment BeamMP got good enough for close racing.

Car damage being so poor really comes down to 2 things.
    1. Most car manufactures do not like to see their cars being destroyed, wrecked, and mangled. Hence why games like BeamNG use fictional cars and all IRL cars are specialized mods.
    2. the Physics, time, effort, money, and GPU/CPU power it takes to accurately simulate soft body physics and realistic crash damage is enormously high. Which is why BeamNGs graphics arent Forza, GT, or ACC level. As BeamNG to be as accurate as possible EVERY COMPONENT of the car is modeled and functions, even the ones you cant see like parts inside doors, seats, dashboard, engine, transmission, suspension, etc. Making having realistic crash physics unoptimized for large scale racing games and also way too expensive.

And then you have the extra irritating case of GTA, where the cars are not licences, yet suffer from minimal deformation (or in even more egregious cases like the Toreador, literally no deformation at all. Not even the doors coming off).
The thing I hate most about GTA's crash physics isn't even the low deformation multiplier. It's the fact that only the front and rear ends crumple, while the cabin stays perfectly firm even if you drop a tank on it. And also the fact that in 5's single player, when you crashed, the car's driving characteristics do get worse, but they REMOVED THAT FROM MULTIPLAYER WHY TF ???

The best damage model I see in a proper racing game is RBR, visually it's not outstanding (consider it's age), but it's very easy to knock you out of the race with engine or gearbox damage, or at least very hard to run with suspension on, and it takes tones of time to fix, time that you won't always have.
It really add a layer of complex and mindset to the game.

These companies logic: It's bad on us if our car, that nobody can afford, gets damaged. We'd rather it look goofy tumbling around like a ragdoll after a crash since that'll make people buy it. Oh, a realistic damage model will actually encourage many drivers to be careful when driving, making our car actually look good in the hands of the skilled drivers? Nope. Too risky on our image. But, we will happily sell our cars to incompetent drivers who'll crash it in real life and actually make the brand image look horrible. The virtual world is too important.

Beamng exists but it also highlights the limitations of realistic car physics.
    - First of additional cars in BeamNG has a high CPU cost.
-Secondly you don't get to "cheat" with the non-player cars. Realistic physics can be really inconvenient when you just want to line things up perfectly.
    - Thirdly realistic car physics are not always fun to deal with. Especially when the understeer kicks in.
    - Not to mention physics in video games generally are jank. Beamng is fairly janky.
Of course you can pick and choose like with Wreckfest. Have car deformation and lots of debris but gloss over the pesky stuff no one actually cares about.
