Ahh I’m so happy you read A Tale for the Time Being, I love it sm!! I lived in Japan for a while and it’s really nice to read a novel that doesn’t romanticize it like a lot of non Japanese authors (or ppl in general) do when talking about it. Also I agree about Ruth’s voice. Honestly I feel like it was just so personal to the author that she kept a lot of it in the book which is lowkey a mood so🤷🏻♀️
A Tale For The Time Being was the first book in a long time that I devoured from start to finish - I could not get enough of it! Nao's story was so compelling and raw and also somehow, funny (and while Ruth's part was boring I felt it built anticipation about how Nao's story ends). My favourite part had to be the relationship she formed with her grandmother and her father - that shit had me SOBBING. I was so scared when I saw this book in the thumbnail but I'm so glad you liked it!!!
Cindy (27:20): it was too salty :/ Also Cindy: 14:08 and 19:07 If that's how much salt your recipe said to use, sue them 😭😭 Parmesan dishes almost never need added salt the cheese is already naturally super salty 😭 my condolences
As a fat woman, thank you very much for bringing this up Cindy. Idk why people seems to think that fat people are caricatures rather than just normal individuals who have bills to worry about, tasks to juggle everyday and relationship to maintain. I have hobbies and interest too rather than just fixating on the fact that i am fat. Sorry for the rant but i've been burnt before by people who assumed i should be embarrased by the fact that i am fat🤷🏻♀️
I impulsively bought A Tale for the Time Being because the cover looked cool and the description seemed pretty interesting , so now that I watched your review I’m even more excited to read it
I am LIVING for you saying Jennifer Weiner is used to writing “chick lit” because Jennifer Weiner get SO BUTT HURT when people call her a chick lit author. Even though that’s EXACTLY her genre. 🤣🤣🤣
I honestly love the plus size representation but when all we see is “I am so fat” be the entire plot it gets exhausting. We are people too, and while I suffer from body issues I’m not going around 24/7 thinking about how fat I am. It honestly bothers me. Also you’re seriously my favorite person ever, & I absolutely love watching you cook lol
As a plus sized person, I rolled my eyes SO hard when you talked about the protagonist in Big Summer's responses to the Asian American having a breakdown over the systemic opression they faced by being like "ummmm, we're all PEOPLE and I was a SCHOLARSHIP KID, we both have THE SAME TYPE OF STRUGGLES". Christ. The audacity of white people.
You should read The House in the Cerulean Sea! It’s gay and magical and I just finished it. It was a breath of fresh air and so wholesome. Recommended if you need something light but still heartfelt.
I love a tale for the time being, and I agree about Ruth's chapters not being as interesting but I did appreciate how they really felt like they were written by two different people, making the diary feel so real (especially with Ruth putting herself and her real life into the book- Oliver is really her husband etc., and footnoting the diary), same with Haruki #1 and his diary entries. Also I live on Vancouver Island and go on trips to the islands in Desolation Sound (where Ruth's story takes place) so it was very cool to relate and hear about places where I live cause its a small little part of the world over here!!
this is the first time i heard another person talk about a tale for the time being. I read this book two years ago on vacation under the impression that this is light read. I remember being taken so back by how light hearted some of the depressing topics are.
I borrowed “A Tale from the Time Being” from my mom not thinking too much about it. When I went back home to read it I broke into pieces. I related to some of Nao’s struggles and cultural identity. It’s definitely a great book but you gotta be in a very tough and stable mental condition to read it
I value this series so much honestly. Having Cindy talk about books and do something in her daily life is so refreshing and in a weird gives me a sense normality from such day to day chaos. Thank you for the content 🧍🖤
I read A Tale for the Time Being a couple years ago and it really got to me- having also gone through trauma as a teenager and the line where I bursted out crying was when the grandmother said: "You must be very angry,". I think as kids we sometimes just feel: well that's the way the world is, really sucks but oh well. But someone will see our pain and acknowledge it and you're forced to realize this is really happening to you or this isn't right and then it becomes painful. I thought it was such a great book.
I saw the title of the video and was almost sad because I loved A Tale for the Time Being, it was so heart wrenching and beautiful, I’m glad you liked it though :)
Saw Tale for the Time Being in the thumbnail and was like nooo, I'm so relieved you liked it too! I've read Ruth Ozeki's book The Year of Meats more recently and it's cemented her as one of my fave authors.
A Tale of a Time Being made me come back to reading. That book saved me during my college years. As you read, it turns very interesting, sucks you very easily and dabbles with facts and nonfic knowledge, also throws in some trivia. So good 💖
Honestly, as someone who was diagnosed borderline obese in middle school and has had body issues ever since, the only time I've ever *liked* someone writing about being fat and all the insecurities that have come with it (for me personally) was Blythe Baird's spoken poem "When the Fat Girl Gets Skinny", and that's only because our experiences were so similar that I knew exactly what she was talking about. The imagery in her poem is so detailed that every time I listen to it I'm sent back to me middle school memories. It's like, yeah, body issues aren't the only problems we have, but personally I feel like the reason it gets so annoying is because most authors write body issues so shallowly. Tl;dr, listen to Blythe Baird and Button Poetry in general if you want something short but *so good*.

Honestly I feel like it was just so personal to the author that she kept a lot of it in the book which is lowkey a mood so🤷🏻♀️
It's so good!
I love how this is a recurring segment in your channel now
me too!
Reading the comment section under Cindy's videos just give me so many good vibes like no other comment sections ever! 😍 I love this community!
Me too ♥️
I love that Cindy is just standing over the onions even though she said they made her cry
Cindy (27:20): it was too salty :/
Also Cindy: 14:08 and 19:07
If that's how much salt your recipe said to use, sue them 😭😭 Parmesan dishes almost never need added salt the cheese is already naturally super salty 😭 my condolences
"oh shut up I know I make bad decisions" you are the biggest mode.
big mood
I love this content where you easily went on from explaining the book to explaining your cooking. I would never know where your monologue ends up
As a fat woman, thank you very much for bringing this up Cindy.
I impulsively bought A Tale for the Time Being because the cover looked cool and the description seemed pretty interesting , so now that I watched your review I’m even more excited to read it
Hope you enjoy it!
I am LIVING for you saying Jennifer Weiner is used to writing “chick lit” because Jennifer Weiner get SO BUTT HURT when people call her a chick lit author. Even though that’s EXACTLY her genre. 🤣🤣🤣
“tw: just don’t read it” lmaoooo
the love for a tale for the time being is so real 🥰 i really want to read more books like that one
Gasp! My emotional support book gremlin has uploaded
hello, local gremlin here!!
Just gotta say. A Tale for the Time Being is exquisite and hit hard, but with a subtle uplift. Glad you covered it.
yes!! :3

Also I live on Vancouver Island and go on trips to the islands in Desolation Sound (where Ruth's story takes place) so it was very cool to relate and hear about places where I live cause its a small little part of the world over here!!
also can we just take a second to appreciate the fact Cindy literally responds to every comment LIKE WHAT A QUEEN 💗🥰
I try!!
this is the first time i heard another person talk about a tale for the time being.
I'm so glad!
I cry at the idea that people think salt is a SPICE, no Chelsea, it's an INGREDIENT, turmeric is a spice
they think pepper is spicy
Ngl i come from a very white family who would "season" food with salt and pepper ☠️ good thing I got out and met people with actual taste buds ✌🏼
Not Chelsea 💀💀

I read A Tale for the Time Being a couple years ago and it really got to me- having also gone through trauma as a teenager and the line where I bursted out crying was when the grandmother said: "You must be very angry,".
I think as kids we sometimes just feel: well that's the way the world is, really sucks but oh well. But someone will see our pain and acknowledge it and you're forced to realize this is really happening to you or this isn't right and then it becomes painful. I thought it was such a great book.
it really was a great book
I saw the title of the video and was almost sad because I loved A Tale for the Time Being, it was so heart wrenching and beautiful, I’m glad you liked it though :)
it really was beautiful!!
Saw Tale for the Time Being in the thumbnail and was like nooo, I'm so relieved you liked it too! I've read Ruth Ozeki's book The Year of Meats more recently and it's cemented her as one of my fave authors.
Cut to me laughing so hard after Cindy says “one large pinch of salt” *pours like 2 tablespoons in* and then “it was too salty” 😂😂
Tl;dr, listen to Blythe Baird and Button Poetry in general if you want something short but *so good*.
ah i’m so glad you enjoyed a tale for the time being! it’s so overlooked! 💗
It's so good!
Cidny is always saying she's a mess or her room is a mess when her kitchen is looking fineeee. Better than mine by a hand full.
it helps that its not my kitchen
@@withcindy im in class stop i knew I shouldn't watch y0u while in class.
@@withcindy lol whose kitchen are you cooking in?
cindy ranting about bad books is a lullaby for me- really helps me have a good night sleep
