How to sketch for a painting?
A painting sketch is an initial drawing you make before painting on your canvas. It is usually a quick sketch created on a small piece of paper.
Such a drawing allows you to visualise the painting before it is created, try out different ideas such as composition, colours, perspective.
Sketching before painting makes you examine the subject of your painting and learn its structure in great details. You will notice how the light behaves on this structure, how colours interact with one another, how it fits in its environment etc. So, when it comes to painting it you will have a guide so that you can easier reach your goal - materialise the vision from your head.
I have been commissioned to paint The Exchange Building in Blackburn for The Heritage Open Days. This special event celebrates historical and cultural heritage all across England.
In this video, I am showing the very beginning of the process, my concept sketch for the painting of this iconic structure.
First step: I am deciding on the colour scheme. I have this very useful tool - Pantone colours swatches which allows me to try and choose the right colour combination.
Second step: I start sketching with watercolour pencils.
The watercolour pencils are truly magical - I can quickly sketch my composition in colour and they easily change into a watercolour painting when water is added.
Third step: Finally, I drip the gloss paint which adds contrast to the painting sketch because it highlights important lines and shadows.
Outlining the image by dripping various gloss paints is my favourite part!
