I've been using the bamboo Ai60s for about a week now and love them. I upgraded from the Ai40s. There is a break in period for the sound. My initial impressions are positive.
I noticed that the break in period was 100% necessary. Different speakers (bass) once I took the time to break them in. I'm thrilled with them ... but I don't compared dozens of speakers monthly ;-)
Everything I listen to through my cell phone sounds bass heavy. It has something to do with the sound in the phone. Meanwhile the compensation circuit in the built in amp is probably trying to compensate for the roll off of bass in the sealed cabinets. 12 db of compensation at 40hz would cause you to run out of amplifier very quickly. When you're playing 5 watts at vocal range the 40hz would be getting 80w... that would hurt dynamics for sure.
I used your “Ai60 soundbar annihilator” review to pull the trigger on a purchase for my unique situation. I had a hard time finding a bookshelf speaker that could perform at 40hz that were also somewhat reasonably priced. I wanted a setup so I could use the 40hz (gamma) frequency as part of a treatment for my mother who has advanced Alzheimer’s disease. I have been using a Vizio 5.1 setup for several months but its frequency only reaches 50hz. Though she has shown signs of improvement I wanted to make sure I got to the therapeutic level of 40hz. So after a “burn in” period of about 20 hours I set these speakers up on each side of her bed facing in toward her just like you did at the end of this video to cancel out the sound. I can tell you that this sound attenuation holds true for regular music as well. Though it doesn’t cancel it out completely it definitely lessens the impact. BUT when lay down in bed next to her they create a sound field that sounds as if you’re standing on the stage with the musician. When I play regular country music it brings a smile to my mother’s, and my face just as if we were standing next to Alan Jackson performing at the Grand Ole Opry. These are some precious memories for sure. Think of them as a giant set of incredibly clear headphones. I have no regrets making this purchase so thanks for a perfect review.
Responses like this really motivate me to keep going! That's so awesome!!!
Is that what happened? I always hope people like what they buy.
finally these bad boys are out! bought mine and arrived last week.. sound amazing
, not broke in yet, they won't sound as good until they are broken in holmz
i have watched plenty of powered spkrs reviews done by Zeos and i conclude that they are made for desk duty, i would never use them in a living room set up; i think they will never have the power needed for movies, and even music, in a larger area.
These are probably as close as I've ever seen. They get loud enough even in my large room. They won't get as loud as a powerful amp with some bigger bookshelf speakers or tower speakers, but pretty darn loud. Clear too. I would say better than most sound bars that I've heard and those have a sub.
the coolest thing is it is sealed. not many companies make sealed speakers these days. what you hear is just how overdamped sealed speakers sound... neutral. and don't expect much bass, sealed speakers are not very efficient and have higher f3 so if it's a bookshelf it WILL need a sub (best to be a sealed sub too). you might not like the way it sounds at first but if you give it enough time, it will grow on you.
Overdamped would not be neutral. You would get a hump in frequency response versus a Q of .707. If the Q is less than .8 you would probably not notice but if it gets higher the hump would start to be audible. A sealed woofer is typically easier to match to a subwoofer but that does not imply the subwoofer would also have to be sealed.
@@gregkramer5588 i think you're confused, nothing is more neutral than overdamped sealed speakers. in sealed enclosures, overdamped means the Qtc is less than 0.7 = bigger enclosure volume, greater control of cone movement and less efficient. underdamped means the Qtc is greater than 0.7 = smaller enclosure volume, less control of cone movement, the driverer "rings" at Fb resulting in a hump in frequency response, thus more efficient but undesirable. are you following? Qtc greater than 0.7 = underdamped and less than 0.7 = overdamped. and of course the sub doesn't have to be sealed, i just said it's best to be sealed because of the same group delay and phase response curves, it'd sound "the same" all across the frequency range but if you like ported sub then go with a ported sub, nobody's stopping you. have you ever heard an overdamped sealed speaker by the way?
Too bad I can't seem to find fluance in europe/germany. Otherwise the Ai40s would sure have to be considered against the YU6s I'm planning on getting. Could you give me a few words about space vs sound on yu4, yu6, ai40, ai60? (when thinking about putting them on the desk). Looking forward to more reviews! some of the kanto reviews seem a little too enthusiastic, but yours made me want a pair for my desk lol
Thanks for the early review. I look forward to seeing how you rank these on your Leaderboard. I'm in the market for some new desktop speakers and keep going back and forth with so many options. A good problem to have.
Too many good options. Review is coming soon.
The reason why the speakers seem to pull back on some sounds etc is because of the DSP. It’s their to protect the speaker from damage. BUT!, fluance went alittle bit overboard with the algorithm that controls this. In the vid is right. Don’t max your source music out. Use the speaker volume. Or source at 50 or 75 percent
Didn't know that trick on break in. I just played music through the ai40.
Did you hear any difference in sound quality after breaking the speakers in with 8-10 hours of playing?
Honestly...maybe? I can't tell and I don't trust my ears or brain enough to discern a difference. We can easily fool ourselves. Good for positive thinking and things like that, but not great when you're trying to be scientific. I should have done measurements before and after.
Please test ADAM AUDIO A7X (and the new S series, preferably the S3H if you can !!).
Cool boxes! Thanks for the video. So, I am an audio engineer and I work mostly with live audio right now in my life. I can tell you driver break in is a real thing. However, the larger the woofer, I find, the more break-in matters. Resonant frequency drops and T/S specs change more to what they are supposed to be. With the 15" and 18" woofers I deal with benefit greatly from break in. They change audibly and it can be measured. I find smaller drivers especially ones not producing a lot of bass, I can't really tell. All the Danley subs we've installed around our churches, they all sound different when new. Lots of 80Hz. They really get cleaner and less EQ if any is needed after break in.
With an advertised output power of 50w per, compared to the ai40's 35w, the the low end and overall sound should be very noticeable even without the break in.
Try a silicone stick that you use for the rubbertrim around car doors. Use it on the woofers edge if you are in a hurry.
Did the break in help with the bass?
Honestly, I don't know. I don't trust my ears or memory. I should've done a measurement before and after, but I wasn't thinking.
Have they fixed the amp?
Both you and Z Reviews commented on amp noise on the Ai40s. I bought a pair of Ai40s and then returned them because of amp noise at zero volume. They were nicely built, fast shipping, good return policy but the noise on the amp was not acceptable.
These are better. I would totally use them nearfield now.
How do these compare to the Klipsch R-41pm and R-51pm speakers? I just bought a pair of R-41pm speakers and they sound good but are lacking in the bass department. I think I will return them for something else.
Adam audio says 8 hrs of break in required.
Joe...Have you ever had any issues with your chromecast audio?..1)losing connection(a lot!)?...2)periodically skipping in the middle of a song?....3)delay in pressing songs? I have plenty of wifi bandwith...70mbps. My wifi covergae is great too. I have tried clearing the cache in app...uninstalling and reinstalling app.....still have issues. Its so frustrating...and I'm paying for hifi $20. Please help!!!!:):)
Ryan
So would u choose these or the Kanto yu6/yu4 ?
cool trick at the end for doing the break-in
How do these compare to the YU6s? Either good enough (with subs) for main TV/movie speakers in living room?
Hi Joe. Could you Test the new Fluances AI61 and 41
Will try
How do these sound with record player? I have a older pioneer receiver. Will it work with it? Thanks!
At 2:20 looks like you're undressing a woman, LOL!
😂
I know we audiophile types like to tweak, it's just nice to see someone else spending so much time examining the sound of speakers in many different configurations. I use pink noise, very familiar and new music, and my wife and I will change wires and listen. Change angle and listen. Distance from wall, distance apart, etc etc. sometimes 2 hours before we settle in on the optimal position. Joe seems like he does that also....that's the kind of person you want reviewing stuff, because that makes it fair and greatly reduces bias. Cool showing ppl about the phase stuff Joe. Higher-end cars have that as well, where they have like an 8" speaker under the seats, with mics under the hood, in the floorboards, etc., they use dsp and out of phase signal to cancel out engine and road noise. Very impressed with this video, and I'm sure we are ALL looking forward to frequency graphs, comparison to the ai40 and other speakers (maybe those Diamonds on your desk?). Awesome unboxing!
Edit: yeah, my wife actually helps with listening tests and speaker positioning! Back off, she's taken ;) lol
, break in does matter especially with certain types of rubber and the voice coils need streached out a bit. let them break in before passing judgement.
also try a regular CD player hooked up through composite and optical connections
Anxiously waiting for your full review. Did you truly notice any difference after the break in? Trying to decide if Ai60 are truly worth it over the Ai40's.
It’s the dsp
Thanks for the video, I am tying to decided between the Ai60 and Edifier s2000pro
Love Etta James
Thanks for the video Joe!
I anticipate your full review and how these compare to the Kanto YU6s. I have a set of YU4s in my kitchen and love how they sound; I imagine the YU6s sound similar to the YU4s, just bigger. If you think the Ai60s sound better than the YU6s, they must be one hell of a speaker.
I found the exact same distortion when having the source volume too high. Definitely use the volume controls on the speakers. Overall very happy with the sound of these.
Thanks for the input! I wasn't sure if it was just me.
Joe N Tell I actually contacted customer service because somehow I had all inputs too high and thought the woofers had blown. The only on I haven’t solved is the ps4 on optical as it has no master volume control. Have to adjust in game but that does no good for apps on the console.
Great first look! You hit all the key points that I would have questions about and you are methodical in your testing. I imagine that if I ever started an AV equipment channel it would be very similar to yours. Glad I found your channel!
for desk spkrs they ARE humungous!
Humongous bass too! 🤣
8:54 let me hear you say WAYYOOOOO
The power adapter has 72W power, it may be the cause of compressed sound
Which color do you prefer? Lucky bamboo or walnut white?
Is that keyboard for ants? Nice speakers!
One problem I have with these type of speakers is that one speaker has all the components and the other speaker is empty. Isn't that one box has more internal volume than the other and wouldn't that alter the sound between them.
Very little difference I would assume.
C'mon on dude. You cant crank the volume on the speakers themselves. Three quarters or until you hear that hiss and then back off. 101 stuff dude. Like your videos otherwise.
Yeah, this is what I do. I have my vanatoo T0s at 3/4 volume and they still get plenty loud.
Where’s the ports? Good bass and mids?
Interested in these or the ai40 for my computer setup. They would be purely for media consumption nto creation. Would you say the higher price of the ai 60 is justified? The expanded input selection is something I do appreciate in the ai 60s.
I like the built in DAC and lower noise floor when not playing music on the Ai60's. They are big though.
@@joentell yeah I was definitely going to take a ruler to my desk and make sure I have the space for them. Thanks for the reply! I love your channel.
Thank you. The Ai60's rock on a desk. I currently have a setup that costs nearly $1200 on my desk. If I had to let them all go in place of the Ai60's I wouldn't mind at all. I might even end up doing that because I like the way the Ai60's look on my desk.
@@joentell Hey if you don't mind me asking, how do these compare to the Vanatoo T0's for a near-field desktop experience? And how would that comparison change if I were to add a sub to either of them? Thanks.
@@joentell final question, I want the white front baffle but do I go bamboo or Walnut?
Can you do a review on the new Fluance Fi20 Bluetooth speaker? 👍
I'm hoping they send me one to review. It looks interesting but that promo video they put out was cringe worthy. 😂
@@joentell haha agreed! Love the design though! I ordered one today despite the questionable "dance" moves that guy had.
😂
Maybe they are in Sub mode? Or maybe out of phase with each other?
Chromecast doesn’t have very good audio. I have one and the audio is nowhere near as good as PlayStation as far as quality.
Are you talking about the Chromecast Audio? You just reminded me that the Chromecast Audio has an optical out and the Ai60's have an optical input.
Joe N Tell for whatever reason my chromecast audio doesn’t sound as good as any of my other sources. Mids almost sound boosted while the highs and lows are very noticeably faded and muddy.
Make sure you have the "full range" setting on in the Google Home app
These or the audio engine A5+ wirless???
24V x 3A = 72W max for both speakers.
I think I might just go with studio monitors since those tend to be > 100W total.
Also, what watch are you wearing?
I tried using the power brick from my SMSL SA50 rated at 24V 4.5A. It might be a little bit louder, but not a huge difference. In the end, this gets plenty loud for most situations.
Watch is the Samsung Gear S3
@@joentell No doubt on the volume. Not sure my space needs more than 75W right now anyway ;)
Thanks for these reviews and unboxings!
Sub out! So glad they added that. Hope there is a sale soon.
Could you make your spotify playlist public?
I wanted to ask the same, after zooming in at 13:42
blablabla
Those tweeters totally remind me of the 803 Jamos!
They look similar with the waveguide
When I heard you say 24 volt 5 amps I said to myself blah. If you said 34 volt, 10 amps yeah but no.
I think it was actually 24v, 3 amps no?
@@joentell even worse... the smslad 18 is 24v by +5 amps, it's a big powerbrick. Quality of sound follows good power supply. I would have figured those needed 32v by 7 to 10 amps.
I understand what you're saying. I might at least have a 24v 5a lying around here
What speaker stands do people recommend ?
I just posted on my IG story. instagram.com/stories/joentell/2180940785831637379?igshid=1sx70fkeampjc
Here's a link to buy them on Amazon: bit.ly/KantoSP32PL

Is that a dent on the back?
I didn't see a dent. At what point in the video?
Those look big and pretty. Powered speakers are very cool. I just wish there was an easy way to use them in a multi-channel setup. If only fluance or SVS could come up with a cheap little preamp / decoder.
They make them on Amazon. I was thinking the same thing and I found a DTS decoder with a remote to control volume. If you end up going that route, it might be less expensive to just get an AVR and passive speakers. Still a cool idea though.
@@joentell Very good to know! Thank you.
...not good 🤔
You'll have to see in my full review
My 4" Samsung R3 hits deeper than my infinity beta 50 with dual 7". Small is in.
Everything I have has a hiss if power is running through it. It isn't much. I have to stick my head to the speaker to hear it. I don't know why people are making such a fuss about it. Maybe they are working for the other companies?
Do a comparison between these and the klipsch the sixes. Those will give these a run for thier money in my opinion
I’d hope so. Even on sale, the Klipsch are twice as much...
Use less ,,,,!!!!!!
What is useless?
Tom Taylor - So is your comment!!!!!
