It's extremely complicated but here you go:
Salford has a second team but it's the rugby league team. The original Red Devils. Their crowds can be fairly low if United are on. Salford City were for your non league fans who are a different breed.
The ground isn't in the middle of Salford, it's on the edge . Every town has a team in Greater Manchester. Fans of Bury just come from Bury, etc. Salford is a city in its own right and was before Manchester. You'll get growled at by the locals if you ever say they're in Manchester. However Salford doesn't have a city centre. Town is Manchester, the bus routes etc all go in that direction. The boundary of Salford changed in 1974, you have 'proper' Salford as it's referred to. Where Salford town hall is, isn't in proper Salford. They used to have an S instead of an M for the post code. You have lots of little towns that were deemed in Manchester, now in Salford. It's like in London you have Croydon, Wimbledon that have been swallowed up by London.
Going back to the bus routes Salford is in like 4 areas and you can't get from one to the other. For me to get to Salford City's ground I'd need to go into Manchester, get a bus going towards Bury, get off in Prestwich (which is Bury council) and walk back into Salford. The part of Salford the ground is in is really isolated.
So the catchment area for Salford City is extremely small. I don't buy into any of this TV Wrexham stuff. There's also no parking near the ground.
Neville was looking at moving the club to where the rugby team play. The problem being that it could only have two tenants and Sale (who play the posh version of rugby - rugger buggers) are also there. Salford rugby who the ground was built for (but the council own it) are the poorest out of the 3. This was then looking like the rugby team was gonna swap grounds with the football team. As you can imagine this went down like a cup of cold sick. So there was perhaps a little less warmth towards the football team which probably impacted on crowds.
The FC United argument is of course incredibly complex as well. The majority of United fans from Salford despise FC Utd. There was a lot of ill feeling when it was formed and was seen as disloyal. The second season for FC saw them play Salford City twice, once in the cup. As a United fan it was horrible to see reds pitted against each other. Glazer rent boys and Judas scum were sung. The game stopped at one point when some 'Salford" fans went on the pitch with a judas scum banner. The game was a played at the old rugby ground , the atmosphere was very tense and unsurprisingly resulted in violence. So bizarrely they may both be little Uniteds but you'd be one or the other if you had a second local team. However most don't.
I don't see anything wrong with a second team if it's non league. Any other type like Celtic and Liverpool, United etc is just a massive no. So I suppose that's what Salford City are, peoples second non league team that aren't non league any more. As it happens I'm moving next month to Prestwich. I was a season ticket holder at United for nearly 30 years but can't manage it being disabled now. I watched a handful of Salford games years ago. I might go because I miss football, but I'll always be United, whose second team is Salford Rugby League.
You've done American Football, you should do a Rugby League video. Leeds would be a good one to do.

I go to Salford a few times a season, it’s super local to me. It’s a cheap ticket and they have live music at full time so a good day out. You can’t deny that the crowd is full of United fans though - you see more United shirts than Salford. Last time I went we made friends with about fifteen Japanese students and there were lots of Americans too. The location is a weird place because it’s in the middle of the Orthodox Jewish part of the city, so unique place for a stadium. Also Lupo’s is the absolute best! Glad you found it.

@@RW-nr6bh That can change though. Almere in The Netherlands (about the same size as Milton Keynes) used to be completely oriented at Ajax since most of their residents came from Amsterdam. They've had a football club for about 20 years that used to be the 'ugly duckling' for most of its existence. But since the football club started doing better a few years back, alongside there now being a solid generation of people with their roots only in Almere, you've seen a change. Their tiny stadium is always sold out since they were promoted to the Eredivisie, and they have a young and quite passionate fanbase. This has also come along with the whole city gradually developing its' own character, which it was always lamented for not having.
Perhaps most telling: last year my local side (this is very, very local football) were playing a relegation match against a similarly minor side from Almere. There was a small group of young lads from Almere, and they were all singing Almere City songs throughout the game. That goes to show that for a lot of young kids, Almere City is now their first team, whereas it used to be a 'second team' to Ajax fans from Almere. Quite nice to see really.

The residential area around the Peninsula Stadium has a large Jewish population. There obviously isn't much attraction for them in watching Salford City.

Are the 21,000 Bolton fans awful because there are not 75,000 of them, like their big rivals Man Utd? Why do most people from Bolton not support their club?

Uncultured American here, but the point you brought up a little past the 4 minute mark is really interesting to me, because here in the States and Canada, we also have a very grim outlook on sports ownership in what we call the "Big 4" leagues here, but it's so crazy to me that our sports leagues do not even have a fraction of the amount of turnover that something like Premiere soccer gets, almost solely because of how differently the league is structured.
North American sports leagues don't do relegation and promotion (mostly for geographic reasons), as such, it's not really possible for some jagoff with too much money for his own good to just nonchalantly "buy" a team for PR and run it into the ground, because in the North American scope, you either have to buy a major league franchise, or buy a minor league franchise FROM a major league one- which in comparison to soccer's "minor leagues" (I'm not sure what they're called compared to the premiere leagues), are more expensive and a much bigger commitment.
For instance, if you own an AHL club, and you put a moron in charge of player acquisition, and then a bigger moron in charge of coaching and development, that mismanagement is going to tank the NHL club because you're essentially "poisoning the farm". It's just interesting to me that, over there, it's an issue that happens routinely and continue to happen routinely to small clubs, where over here, minor league markets not only stand on their own in some cases, but have a solid degree of protection if they're affiliated to a straightedge organization.
A place like Des Moines or Wilkes-Barre doesn't *necessarily* need to stand on its own as a market, because they have security in being linked to the Wild and Penguins. Where because they don't use an affiliate system, but instead, a relegation system out in the UK, smaller markets are much more autonomous, but at massive cost to their stability and long term security. It's strange to me that one side of the pond is experiencing that as a routine issue in their leagues, where in North America, when you have an owner like David Tepper, Bob Nutting, Jerry Reinsdorf or Alex Meruelo, it's a HUGE deal and other owners even actively work against them.

Yes, just two. Woolpack Wanderers and the Garrison Gunners. They play each other about 20 times a year, and whoever wins the most games of those, is that year's league's champion. That was certainly the case when I made my only visit with my team Tranmere (although it wasn't raining that night). The game was originally scheduled for New Years Day 2022, but Salford's squad was riddled with Covid at the time so the game was called off. When rescheduled, the crowd totalled around 2100, of which 1200 was from Tranmere, meaning the home support was only around 900.
The night I visited, I went to another pub called The Star, which is a community-run pub, about the same distance from the ground as the one you visited, but the other side of the ground. Both are about a mile away, but still the closest two to it.

I too went to the 2 games at the willows which attracted about 7,000 over the 2 games which at the time Salford city were just about getting 3 figure attendances ... FC United formation was to the annoyance to non league fans but the majority of the chairmen/ owners were rubbing their hands with excitement with practically getting a full season income in just 1 game ... But some non league fans would of preferred disgruntled united fans to choose their local non league, team spreading the love which most clubs would of appreciated 50 or so more on their gates regularly ... Salford and united games very rarely clash, especially when united are in the Europa League when they play their weekend games on Sundays, might be a different story next season ... But if sir Jim and the glazers put the prices up and keep dipping in to my pension fund Salford city may get another couple of supporters and a few more may follow

The club went into administration and are now a reformed club as Gretna 2008 and play in the lowland football league. As of late they have struggled to sign players due to work permits from England and due to Gretna being on the Scottish border there really isn’t a lot to do. I would love you to do a follow-up to this about my team, Harrogate Town, who might have an even smaller fan base than Salford.
When we played Salford last season on the final day, many fans joked that it was the battle of who had fewer fans.
Our ground is also in the middle of a suburban area, but it’s even worse because it’s on a main road, and there is no room to expand the ground. We do have two pubs reasonably close by, though. It’s miles away from Betty’s, yet when Footy Focus reported in 2019 about their 1st round FA Cup match, they did the interviews at Betty’s, which says a lot about the club's lack of identity.
The unique thing about Harrogate is that the manager, Simon Weaver, is the owner of Irvin’s son, which makes for awkward discussions about whether the manager is still in this job because of his dad.
The bit where people ask you about the Man U score is very relatable to me; people are always asking about the Leeds score at Harrogate. I remember one afternoon when Harrogate won, and as we were clapping the players off, a big cheer went up because Leeds scored a late winner. I have to think that many fans wouldn't bother coming to our games if Leeds were playing. Bradford City fans claim Leeds fans fill out our away section when we play at their place, which I don't think is true, but I think we do get more fans when we play Bradford because of the rivalry with Leeds.
Other small clubs that have done well are Forrest Green Rovers (though they’ve fallen away recently), Crawley Town, Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion (who were in the Championship for two seasons).
You could also do the reverse, a big club that's now in the lower leagues, Scunthorpe United (top of National North), Torquay United (in the middle of a second spell in the sixth level right now), Hartlepool United (who Rob and Ryan also considered buying) or York City (with their boring ass new ground miles out of the city).

@Footy13s I'm not sure if you're misspelling the first name of the ex Liverpool striker or the word saddo. Or maybe you're just talking about a japanese tea ceremony or island.

The 2 clubs in the Australian A-League football competition that no one cares about and gets like 100 people to their home games is Macarthur Bulls and Western United

Adding milk with the tea bag still in the cup is fucking criminal.

I like the ground, real nice. You’re treating them like a new club. You gotta give a new club a chance to grow their following. My problem is the Co92.

No ones gate keeping anything. But you can see this is objectively shite compared to other teams at that level.

@@macewol326 You don't need to have chants or get smashed before the game to enjoy it. You certainly don't need to be in a funk all weekend or week. This seems like a nice family-friendly outing (not including the losers hurling abuse at a child). It's not as intense but they're not hurting anyone; it's just different. Each to their own. That guy who goes with his son and that girl with a season ticket were enjoying themselves.
