This is why I think the formula is make what you love and use it to find other people who love what you love
Because when a piece of your proactive art blows up as hard or harder than reactive art
I feel that's the zenith we as artists are trying to achieve

I agree that 70/30 is a good split, I might even say 60/40 or 50/50 when you are starting out to help pull more attention and followers in as you form your fan base can be helpful and then gradually shift to more of a proactive split as you have established yourself and your followers will grow with you and begin to appreciate your original content as much as your content of existing works. Really enjoyed the video, great points.

It really depends on the artist's goals in terms of what they want their fanbase to be. Some people don't mind being known for drawing fan art and others might only want to be known for their original characters. It's difficult to truly know what you want your art legacy to be five - ten years down the road. But, in general it is a lot harder to convert from fanart to original content than the other way around. That's just the nature of fanart and fandoms in general, it can't really be helped. It's a great asset to gain a following but it could also turn into an inescapable trap if one's not careful.

@alohamikan I totally agree, I think we are really on the same page. I just wanted to expand a bit about what may be helpful during the beginning of an artist’s public career (that first year online can be what motivates someone to stick with investing into their art or demotivates them into losing passion). And as much as we like it or not, the familiar draws attention easily. But as you say, always do a balance that you are comfortable with, because if you aren’t motivated then no amount of validation will overcome that. And ultimately any breakdown you arrive at, from 100/0 to 0/100 is just as valid, we have just been sharing our thoughts on what we think can be the most effective and rewarding at different stages of an artist’s career. 🤜🤛😎

Can really relate to this so much 😭. I started drawing hololive fanart for fun but then I realized I am doing it for views now.
