    Totally agreed with you on the conversation you and Niall had on 18th, great way to rationalise your thinking and get to the right result. Love that someone out there is prepared to be open about your golfing abilities and show us the bad shots as well as the good. As a 30-32 HCer very relatable!

    When you made par on #1, I thought sandbagger, then like a true high handicapper, you got a quad. I’m also a 28 hc btw.

    More like an 18 handicapper like me. I would expect a 28 handicapper to hit some very bad shots, scuffs and out of bounds etc, but you played very well. I think I might have struggled to do as well as you did. Good video though and lovely course, well done.

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper

      Thanks mate, not sure I’m quite there yet but hopefully my game is trending in the right direction 📉 Unfortunately for me I still have one too many very poor rounds, that really impacts my handicap. On my good days I feel like I can score really well which encourages me that I can get to 18 one day 👍🏻 Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video

    • @enidaaron537
      @enidaaron537 2 місяці тому +3

      Shouldn't impact your hcp as the poor rounds wouldn't be counted in your best 10 out of your last 20 rounds. to calculate your index.

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  2 місяці тому +3

      Technically it’s 8 out of 20 rounds but if you have “one too many very poor rounds” of course it’s going to impact your handicap. For instance, if you have 5 good rounds and 15 poor ones, three of those poor ones now account for almost 40% of your handicap.
      Also, I tend to play well in patches so lots of times I’ll have lots of good scores in a row dropping off one after the other and are being replaced with poor ones, which causes my handicap to go up.
      Thanks my experience 👍🏻

      @Kitzishot 2 місяці тому +3

      I'm a new player with a 32 handicap. The truth is I get about 2 Pars, a few bogeys, a number of doubles, and a few triples, and maybe a quad out of 18 holes. It's not out of bounds that is my issues or really bad shots. One of my issues is topping it after waiting on other players in front of me for greater than ten minutes. Really throws off the flow. This really ends up with me getting a triple or a quad.
      I may lose one ball out of every 6 or 7 rounds. It's really rare for me to lose two balls in 10 rounds.
      So, what is really killing me? Not the bad shots, scuffs, or out of bounds. It's Pitching, Chipping, and Putting. It's the short game or better yet the 60 yards and under. It's the triple Putting.
      I would say I'm about 75% on getting out of sand bunkers near the green. I'm probably 90%+ on getting out for those that are further away.
      I just started playing four months ago. My initial first game was a 151. I'm currently in the 100 - 105 range reliably with a 99 yesterday.
      I would say with a high handicapper it is 80% the short game and that is something that takes time and repetition.
      The other 20% is course management which was a big issue at first for me. The feeling they need to get that Par on every hole. When I sat back and said, "OK, double bogey every hole is the goal," is when I sheered about 12+ points off my score. Literally, overnight I went from 115+ to under 105.
      Once I've done this till I am running under 100 consistently then I'll change to bogey golf.
      This mind set has made me stop reaching for the stars to get on the green immediatly. It's led to more control, less bunkers, much less out of bound shots, much less penalty shots.
      If I had a recommendation to every brand new player is to start with a triple bogey goal and then in a month or two work your way to a double bogey goal and then bogey golf for a while. Do the range but spend four times as much practicing your Pitching, Chipping, and Putting.

    I think most commenters saying “this isn’t what a 25 handicap looks like” know nothing about the handicap system and/or have never kept an honest scorecard in their lives
    I get the exact same feedback when I tell people I’m a 19 handicap. I’ve even been accused of sandbagging 🤣
    Just yesterday, I out-scored a supposed “3 handicap” player 🙄
    Turns out that golf is hard when you actually follow the rules!
    Great video btw, cheers

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  Місяць тому +3

      Firstly, thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😀👍🏻
      And secondly, I completely agree. I’ve been pretty shocked at the how many comments I’ve gotten questioning my handicap despite the fact I shot a 99. I think some people mean it politely and as a compliment but there’s been lots implying that there’s something sinister going on as if im giving up 6+ hours of my life everytime i go out, not to try my best 😂 Utterly bizarre!
      I honestly think that a lot of people don’t realise that its simply a mathematical formula based on your best 8 out of your last 20 rounds 🤷🏻‍♂️
      And I suspect in other countries things are done differently, but in Ireland, handicaps are pretty well managed by an official source and most handicap rounds are shot in competition within a home club and a stranger marking your card. There’s no mulligans, there’s no gimmies, there’s no breakfast balls… that’s all I can put it down to 🤯

    Beautiful course. You have a fun vlog. Congrats on the nuptials.
    Every practice swing ends in balance, every actual stroke does not. In an effort to follow where the ball goes, you constantly come out of your swing path. A pro once told me that after every shot you should feel like can step toward the target. Your body always moves back away from target.

    Your drives don't immediately slice 50 yards and most strikes are solid so that's a win in my book. I need to get that part of my game under control to even start thinking about my score. Thanks for being honest and relatable.

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  Місяць тому +1

      😂😂😂 cheers mate, not having an immediate 50 yard slice is definitely a positive in my book 😂
      To be honest, the last couple of months is the first time where I’ve really felt that my game is somewhat coming together and I’ve minimised the really horrendous shots which has helped me score a lot better. Still have the odd horror round though 🧟‍♂️ But that’s golf 🏌🏻‍♂️

    Everyone who has played golf for a while and improved has been where you are. I wish you all the best on your journey but I guarantee it is worth it. If I can suggest the best thing you can do to improve (apart from lots of practice) is to have a great mental approach. E.g. you received 28 shots on this course, therefore there are 10 holes where you receive 2 shots, so you can play some par 4’s as par 6’s and 5’s as par 7’s. You will soon start shaving shots from your index. Btw try and ignore the haters on here, most of them have nothing else to do with their time!

    Brilliant and brilliant. A great set of perspectives for most of the golfers in the world and a genius way to play some great courses. Again...brilliant and brilliant. On a related note, it is a great reminder about how many people out there talk complete horse crap when they talk about their handicap. I don't know about there in Ireland, but here in the US, people toss numbers around that are ridiculous. Occasionally you will hear something almost realistic like..."with a few mulligans I'm a 15", but more often than not you will likely hear ridiclous claims. It is the reason I carry several $100 bills in my bag. It is amazing how quickly their bravado is tempered when cash comes out. Thanks for the great content.

      Hi Todd, thanks a million for the great comment 😃 Delighted you like the idea and video.
      In Ireland, I think handicaps are pretty genuine as the majority of golf in Ireland is done through club competitions so everything is official. I also think mulligans in Ireland are incredibly rare, even when playing with friends. Once the round starts, every shot usually matters 👍🏻

      It does sum me up to be honest. Despite hitting the bunker on one, I still made the hole look relatively easy.
      I don’t think I’d necessarily call 2 & 3 meltdowns, I actually felt like I played them quite well but was still flummoxed to walk off with double bogeys on both.
      I hit one bad shot on 2, which was the 40 yard chip shot. And on 3, I had a very tough bunker lie and essentially gave up a stroke here and even still, an inch left with my first putt and I would have still had a bogey.
      4 was most definitely a meltdown though 😂

    “Well I just made that hole a lot longer.” That’s basically my motto. A lot of tee shots (or second shots) result in a “just turned this par 4 into a par 5”, but I think that’s how you should look at it. I messed up, but if I can still make a 5 or 6, it’s not scorecard killer.

    Great video, really enjoyed it. Honestly, I think if you just slow your backswing through the transfer to downswing (a bit snatchy and quick) you will easily knock 5 strokes off.
    Would love to see you utilize a S/W or gap wedge when your under 80 yds out as the P/W can sometimes thin or shank a bit. And try your 4 iron for when the ball is a few feet off the green, just gives that bit more oomph to get through the apron whilst still giving you a putter feel. Hope you don't mind my suggestions?

    It is absolutely amazing how high handicappers also have an unusually high level of 'bad luck' out on the course.
    Some may say it's skill related but even on blind holes and previously unplayed courses; I've been in groups where better players will find the fairways or light rough and invariably the higher handicappers find trees or fairway bunkers, or terrible lies.
    In one game a few weeks ago we had an 8, a 13 a 17 (me) and a 28 handicapper - we all hit half decent drives that landed in the fairway, more or less within a few yards.......the 28 players ball landed.....obviously hit something and ended in a hazard.......and did it again 3 holes later!

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  2 місяці тому

      I do think the majority of it is skill related but I don’t disagree that I often feel so unlucky during certain rounds. But I think a lot of it is because I get out of position, so I’m often hitting from imperfect lies or around obstacles. Nearly always find myself the wrong side of greens having to chip over bunkers or downhill etc.

    I think you should look at your swing on this video and look at the other guys 2 swings at the end of the video, and just look at how close you are to the ball (gap between your hands and your body) compared to the other guy, my game drastically improved once I realised this and started standing a bit further away from the ball which made me lean over more, keeping my weight over my feet and helped pushing weight towards front foot on the follow through.

I’m not a pro by any means necessary but watching this, I think your audience will be able to give you as many tips as you would get from a pro and save yourself money…. first and foremost you must stay through your swing you back off after you swing you don’t finish it and that doesn’t allow for your swing path to complete. Therefore your ball slices or it hooks… you make a ton of errors when chipping chipping and putting the two parts of I don’t care what anyone says they probably accumulate 50 to 60% of your shots if you can cut seven or eight of those strokes you’ll be under 100 and then eventually on your way to breaking and then who knows what you can do concentrate on your chipping concentrate on your putting read your lines and get your correct and you’ll be way better golfer in seven or eight rounds

      John, as a fellow member of the High Handicappers Union I would have expected your utmost trust from the very start because we all know that the blow up is coming sooner rather than later 😂 It’s the mystery of being a high handicapper, play some holes like a 15 handicapper and others like a 45 handicapper 😂
      Anyway, thanks for watching and if I’m ever in Rhode Island you’re first on my list 👍🏻

    Im a 24 i feel you brother 18 is where i want to but i went from 22.2 to 24.4 this year so far plauing so much better, irons im crushing just the off the tees are killing me

      Yeah I’ve found off the tee is absolutely crucial. Thankfully it looks like I’m finally working my way downwards and it’s mainly due to getting the ball in play off the tee. Keep grinding mate 💪🏻

    Before you get going, a 28 handicapper is not breaking 100 on that course. Hats off! Did that with a 9 and an 8!

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  2 місяці тому

      Thanks Terrance. My index is 24 so I hover between 24 - 28 depending on what courses I play. This one has quite a high slope rating hence the 28 shots.
      Definitely a tough course but reasonably happy with how I played, particularly on the back 9. Tend to always have a couple of really bad holes which ruins the scorecard a bit but I think I’m improving in this area 👍🏻

    Really liked the concept of the channel and have subscribed, question for you Jamie would you still play golf with a lesser handicap of 18 and shooting 28pts instead of 38pts?

    • @DiaryofaHighHandicapper
      @DiaryofaHighHandicapper  2 місяці тому

      Hi John, delighted you like the channel and thanks a mill for subscribing 👍🏻
      My main aim at the moment is to go sub 20 and I think 18 would be ideal. A shot on every hole would be nice. So that’s the plan 😃
      However, once I get there I’d like to be able to play to it. I’d find it pretty demoralising going out consistently shooting 28 points.
      Why do you ask?
