You’re about an hour and a half into the movie and, boy, are you regretting that large soda. You can hold it... but should you?
Peeing is pretty important. Your kidneys filter excess water and waste out of your blood and that urine needs somewhere to go: your bladder. Normally, it’ll hold 1-2 cups comfortably. But if you make a habit of holding your pee for long periods of time, you can actually stretch your bladder to easily hold even more.
Case in point, one study found that nurses who often held it in all day due to job constraints had nearly double the normal bladder capacity! And they were totally fine.
But this doesn’t mean you should hold it in if you can help it. Because your bladder may not be the only thing to stretch.
You may also stretch your external sphincter muscles. Those are important muscles connected to the outside of your bladder that are the gate-keepers of your golden liquid. Clench them and you hold in the gold. Relax them and you release the flood! But if you overstretch them, you can actually lose control. This is rare, and usually takes decades of holding it too long to reach that point, but once you do, it can lead to some awkward or even dangerous situations.
For example, with less overall control, you risk leaking urine when your bladder is full and not emptying it all the way when you finally do go. Not only can this increase your need to urinate more often since your bladder fills up quicker, it can also lead to a serious disorder called urinary retention, where you end up with too much urine in your bladder for too long. And since your bladder is basically a warm, wet bag of body waste, it’s the PERFECT breeding ground for harmful bacteria that’ll cause all sorts of damage.
Even worse, if you’re really unlucky and retain too much urine, it may back up into your kidneys. Which could lead to kidney failure, and ultimately death.
The good news is that you’re more likely to just lose control of your muscles and pee waaaay before your bladder hits that point. But why not just reduce the risk all together and go to the bathroom?
Ok, ok, we get it. That movie is absolutely gripping. Luckily... You’ll be fine if you only hold it in for a short time, every once in a while. So go ahead, hang in there... just don’t make a habit of it. - Наука та технологія

I remember once holding my pee for 4 hours after drinking over a liter and a half of water beforehand. I don’t know why I haven’t just stopped at a gas station or something but I insisted on making it home. My bladder felt like it was about to explode for a solid 30 minutes and any small movement of my body made it hurt like hell. But the worst part was when I had finally made it home and tried to get out of the car to go to the bathroom. I’ve spent 15 minutes to walk from my car to the bathroom. I couldn’t stand up right from the pain. Needless to say it was the longest peeing session of my life and the relief I felt was unmatched by anything else. That day I was really worried that my bladder would actually pop. I will never allow my self to reach that stage again.

One time I actually held my bladder for 9 hours straight. We were on a really long car trip and it just made the trip a lot short with less rest stops. I didn’t know back then that this was a bad thing to do. At least as so as we got home, everyone got out of my way as I ran for the bathroom 😂
Holding it once or twice isn't bad thing. The bladder is free to stretch and contract but doing it for long can cause the gateway to stretch which is voluntary muscles tissue. That's the only part you can lose control over it. As for kidney failure stuff you gotta have other disease for this to happen
I did the same when I was 18 on a trip coming home from camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains back to Los Angeles. I knew it was going to be a doozy so I recorded it on audio cassette and timed it. It was a 4 minute and 21 second solid stream, plus about 2 extra minutes of squirting out small bits. I recorded it because my friends would have never believed the story nor thought that I could do a longer piss than from "The Naked Gun" and Adam Sandler's skit "The Longest Pee" ("They're All Gonna Laugh At You," 1993), which were both about 1 minute long. At the end, I said, "I feel relieved." I turned on the radio and it was the theme song to Sesame Street on the hip hop station. I said, "What the hell is going on here?" - Biff Tannen, Back To The Future 2.

I had a time where I held my pee in for so long that my body refused to open up to let it out. That feeling of needing to pee when you can't was horrible haha. Thankfully it doesn't happen anymore

Pamela Prade I never said teachers cause all the problems in the world!!! Sometimes we don’t need to at lunchtime or whenever but we to in class, we cannot control when we need to go. Update: (I have left this comment under one of your UA-cam shorts!) I have a stretched bladder. I didn't learn about this until 7th grade (now in 9th grade) although I have been doing this for now five years. As a victim, I am just here to tell others that it can be very painful when you have been doing it for maybe two years (I started at 10, but it left me with the most pain I ever felt at 12, even though I have never been pregnant before I would describe it as labor. That is how painful it was for me.) Now almost 15, I got into the habit of actually going when I feel like I have to. I initially started doing it out of pleasure (yes, you read that correctly.) and then it later got out of control. This is why teaching important things about our bodies at a young age is so vital. I didn't learn about any of this until I was 13-14 years old. I now have a very sensitive stretched bladder but fortunately it is not too late to get better. :) although irreversible, I can help myself before I kill myself with the amount of germs in my organs (it can kill you slowly over time, just to note.) This goes out to whoever may need this. Please protect your organs and God bless.

Fun fact: schools are legally required to let you go to the bathroom if you need to. They cannot control whether or not you can go. You have the right to use the bathroom, and you can literally walk out if you really need to.
(Bathroom access is also a human right according to the 2015 UN General Assembly)
Edit: I'm not suggesting you should just get up and leave whenever you want, you should always be courteous and try to work things out with the teacher if you need some form of special accommodation, I'm just saying if there's a sudden emergency then you shouldn't feel compelled to put your health at risk just for this

I think it's great to hold it in up to the point of where you can go to sleep at 23:00 and then wake up at 8 without having to pee in between. My blatter holds about 600-700ml now and it's the perfect size to me.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. I've known a few people that hold their pee because they'd rather not use dirty bathrooms. You can end up having kidney failure on needing dialysis. When my mother was at the hospital I talked to a dialysis patient who told me that he did not like going to the bathroom unless it was his own and use to hold it all the time. He started to develop problems and was on dialysis now.

It’s me at the beginning! I was watching Avatar The Way Of Water at the cinema and after 15 minutes I wanted to pee while the film lasts 3 hours. I’ve never wanted this much in my life. I managed to sneak into the bathroom at the end of the movie and I didn’t know how they got out of the boat so I went back to see a second session. 😂

I remember doing this once for two hours when i was 7, basically on christmas day after we left the church we instantly went to a hotel instead of going home which was two hours away and i held it in for the whole ride, i still remember going to pee when i reached the hotel and it was legit the best feeling in the world, i wish i could relive it again
I remember when I was a kid I used to hold in my poop all the time then one morning something happened to me and needed to go to hospital, they found out that my appendix was swollen like a beach ball or smth idk and I had to get operation to remove it, lesson learned

@@mrsugar7528 I used to hold poop for 7 days. Don't ask me how that is possible. I still don't know. One time the poop was too hard and occasionally blood will come but never got anything serious. I'm glad that I don't have to do any surgeries or go to the hospital. Poop not coming out is the worst feeling ever. You pray to god use as much force as possible and not too much because you are scared that you will let out blood.

I had a nightmare a few days ago that I was holding my shit and when I went to the bathroom I flooded my pants. I woke up panic checking myself. That's a real nightmare
TLDR: your bladder explodes and it will hurt until you succumb to your horrible gory wounds.
I can't reduce this risk because my school doesn't let people go to the toilet. You HAVE to have a medical condition to go to the toilet called a "toilet pass"

I got an urinary tract infection for holding it too long too frequently. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced up until that point. Never again.
me too .i holded for too long for 3 hrs and suffered with uti and bladder distension ,it happened 6 years ago, still iam facing bladder urinary contingency, its annoying getting knee pains for frequent visiting toilets and wasting lot of time in my office. my employees are getting annoyed too, i told them the problem. they go to toilets every 6 -7 hrs which is normal, where as i go to toilet every 1 hr or sometimes 3 hrs .i fear of urine stones ,so i drinks lots of water too. actually i developed ptsd after uti.because i had holded my urine voluntarily for 3 hrs due to fear of my strict lecturer and social phobia .my dad scolded me there's something wrong psycology in my brain due that i developed fear.
Me too I actually peed myself when I had a urinary tract infection, it was bad I even peed myself from holding it too long and sometimes first thing in the morning, I don’t make it, so I just pee in my pull up I can’t hold it at night which is why I wear pull-ups. I have several palsy which makes it incredibly difficult for me to hold it at night and I don’t physically feel when I have to urinate until it’s too late.

Years ago I was hospitalized because I was exhibiting symptoms of MS and my bladder stopped functioning. I had to wear a catheter and walked around with a big o’l bag of pee strapped to my leg. During my recovery I remember being in the hospital bathroom with my mom and attempted peeing - hearing that beautiful trickling sound sent both of us into tears of relief and happiness.
Moral of the story, never take peeing for granted.

The exact same thing happened to me after i had my first child. NOT FUN AT ALL. I remember opening up the faucet water because the sound of the water running was supposed helped me pee but it wouldn't come out. just a straight up nightmare. Hopefully you're okay now,!

I got knee surgery and I couldn’t pee because of the effects of surgery and all the medication. So I also had to catheter and I did not like it lol. That first time your able to pee normally is the best feeling in the world. Like all your stress and worries go away and your morale just jumps from 0 to 1000

As a teacher, I always let my kids go to the bathroom whenever the want. However, what you guys might not seem to realize, is that we teachers are also not able to go pee during class because we have to stay with students… you’re not alone in this struggle, we feel it too!

Surely you can if you want to. Isn't it just a choice? I see teachers leaving the class often for things like retrieving materials they left in the staff room. Anyway, you shouldn't justify other teachers' actions since they don't even know if it's urgent for the student or not. At least the teachers can tell for themselves when it is.

Please don't do that! Take care of your kidneys 😔 I had a really bad time before holding the pee, and that specific pain was a sympthon of a kidney infection. I went to the hospital when the thing goes worse- It was horrible.

It is not good to hold in for too long. However it is also not good for your bladder and for your pelvic floor muscles to empty the bladder too often (i.e. When it not even half way full). This could result in the reflex of loosing the normal capacity of the bladder and having the urge to pee way too often and too early thus you always search for private places.
And another hint: even if you not have had a baby the muscles of your pelvic floor will get weaker with the years if you don't train them. But never ever train them while your peeing!!

You should've gone though. When I was a student, I went before class even if I didn't need to go that badly just to avoid situations like that. As a teacher now, it's always the same person each time that I ever say this to. Like you know you're going to need to pee 10 minutes into class, can you try going to the bathroom before and get your body into that habit instead?

In school, they do not allow us to go to the bathroom. They only allow it sometimes. Actually, when the students say that they want to go to the bathroom, they don't go to the bathroom, they go out to chat with people and waste time. That's why teachers don't allow us to go. They let us go only when it's very urgent. This is a problem, because it's not good to hold your urine. You might get a UTI or kidney damage.
