Wonderful playing by an organist who is in my opinion in a class few ever get to. I also noticed that this is being played from memory as there is no music to be seen. Outstanding!!!
I was always criticized for overusing the Crescendo Pedal on the Mighty Wicks...I wish i had a beast like this to play on...I'da really rattled the stained glass windows with this hymn!!!!
Why should 9 people dislike this? It's not too loud. So many of these old organists had hearing problems just from their craft. But the words are an old Protestant classic. You learned that in Sunday School: All hail the power of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all. Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all. Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, ye ransomed from the Fall, hail Him who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all. Hail Him who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all. Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget the wormwood and the gall, go spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all. Go spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all. Let every kindred, every tribe on this terrestrial ball, to Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all. To Him all majesty ascribe, and crown Him Lord of all. (Alternate wording to the above verse) Let every tribe and every tongue before Him prostrate fall And shout in universal song the crownèd Lord of all. And shout in universal song the crownèd Lord of all. O that with yonder sacred throng we at His feet may fall! We'll join the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all. We'll join the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all.
Here is the story behind this song. Reverend E. P. Scott was a missionary, living in India during the 1800s. At the prompting of the Holy Spirit, but against advice of his fellow missionaries, Scott set out alone to visit a remote village. He was determined to share the Gospel with a dangerous savage tribe. Several days into his journey. Scott was met by a large group of warriors who quickly surrounded him, each one pointing a spear towards his heart. Expecting to die, Scott made a decision to use his last few breaths to glorify God, and to hopefully stir something within the hearts of his captors. He took out his violin (which he always carried on him), closed his eyes, and began to play and sing All Hail the Power of Jesus Name, in the native language of the warriors. After singing the first verse, the second, the third, and then beginning the fourth, Rev. Scott realized he was still standing, and that all around him was a peaceful quiet. Opening his eyes he saw every spear lowered. There stood those mighty warriors, with tears in their eyes. Throughout the remainder of his life, Scott spent much time with this tribe, sharing the love of God. br/>All Hail the Power of Jesus Name has been hailed as the "National Anthem of Christendom." It was written in 1779 by Rev. Edward Perronet (1726-1792) The music was composed by Oliver Holden (1765-1844). The hymn has been translated into almost every existing language. www.sharefaith.com/guide/Christian-Music/hymns-the-songs-and-the-stories/all-hail-the-power-of-jesus-the-song-and-the-story.html
Wonderful organ, wonderful playing, wonderful singing. No music. Just talent and raw power. Constraints of recording and technology, and time are understandable.
Thanks for posting this video! Stunning pops to mind, to try to describe Fred's performance and the atmosphere generated by so many people singing one of my favorite hymns like they mean it! His bridges were so perfect, not too grandiose, but seriously indicative of a virtuoso.
What? Somebody said too loud? IMHO for a hymn of praise, it should be loud just like this. Sing onto the lord. Praise him with voice, praise him with organs, praise him with trumpets, let everything that hath breath praise the lord. The organist and the choir and congregation he leads in song in this video are doing just that.
I myself have played this piece many times and love it so!!! it's meant to be done with any talent you use! he was Organist there for about 25 years before he retired there
I've been playing drawknob consoles for over twenty-six years including the mighty Harrah symphonic and I can't pull stops as quick as Frederick Swann does
This was probably recorded from a camera microphone. From experience in church broadcast recording, we use the choir microphones to record both the organ and the choir.
The title is All Hail not All Snail! Furthermore, Fred said that there was a time limit to the hymns at the Cathedral for the hymns, so certainly a moderate tempo is necessary for television. Excellent playing from the king player of large instruments, Frederick Swann!!! Long Live the king and the King of Instruments. Let the organs peal with loud praise!
Before I read the description, I thought that this was the R.A. Colby 522 drawknob console at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, MD! Robert Hope Jones built something just as grand for the Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA (now a property of the Archdiocese Of Los Angeles since Robert Schuller had retired and sold it to the Catholic Church). Garden Grove is also the hometown of Alan Trammell (played for the Detroit Tigers for twenty years and managed for three), and that Crystal Cathedral has the same architectural influence as U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the Viking Ship home of the Minnesota Vikings football team!
Agressive? to fast? there are many styles that Fred could choose and there are many opportuninties to illustrate these styles. This one is what he did at this particular moment. Competent organists, especially those with flair and polish with technique and improvisatory skill, will change with the moment...depending on the room characteristics etc. It is good to remind ourselves that many churches are on a clock. See Fred over a year and you will see many different styles. Anthony
Well the words are to show the power of Christ, so he's giving a more proclaiming feel to the organ by using the chamade pipes and loud reed pipes to give it a powerful message.
They weren't thinking. Clearly. The 5th largest pipe organ in the world (or thereabouts) sitting right there, and an ordinary "praze" band was chosen over it. Shame on them. The organ will see lots of use now, though. And I saw recently that it's being shipped back to Ruffatti soon to be rebuilt!
OK...couple things...why is his "music" written on a 3x5 index card? And yes, that cracked me up when he like vibrates the walls and then casually hits the cancel button like he was clocking out and going to lunch! LMAO
Joshua Alexander that ain't his music sheets Joshua even though I'm quite aware of the sarcasm. He's played this for a loooooong time. And yes the cancel button thing tickled me too! (Being a former church organist myself)
What a shame.......glorious music lost forever that flowed from this church and from Coral Ridge Presbyterian.......our nation is surely on a downward slide toward mediocrity and the mundane.
Hard to tell it, but the organ was already in really bad shape here. As Hector Olivera put it, you had to work around all the dead notes (pipes) and stops……and all of the dead birds inside pipes in the gallery organ pipes!
From what I can hear, it's simply a matter of overload on the audio recording. A pity that such a grand sound (over the top? - so what! - our faith is worth going over the top at times) is damaged by the resulting distortion.
What a sin. Robert Schuller wanted bigger and better. When he couldn't afford bigger and better he opted for even bigger and better. He didn't know when to say STOP!! Eventually, him not being able to back out of the church and keep his big mouth closed after he retired split his family and his church apart. Not being able to pay for those bigger and better things due to years of declining memberships sent this materialistic church down hill. I remember watching him as a kid and always thought he had a wad of cotton in his mouth. What a shame. Extravagance and excess will get you every time. To bad the Schuller family couldn't figure that out because each one was always concerned about THEIR piece of the pie!!!
I marveled when watching the Hour of Power - Schuller would get some incredible talent and guests during his run. Recall once when Tony Campolo was invited on the show - during his 2-3 minute interview, he spoke with conviction and one could really discern his love for Christ. Contrast that with Schuller and his comments back to Tony about how anyone can simply pull themselves up out of their condition and reach Christ by their own merit. That notion is simply heretical. Total depravity, in the Bible, clearly teaches that we cannot on our own accord or strength, do anything good. God in his grace reaches down to us and makes us alive in Him.
+apiece ofdirt LOL. Given your divisive and belligerent nature, as evidenced by this post and the one below, you must be a "Christian." Go fuck yourself, you piece of shit.
You’ve mentioned that on a lot of Fred Swann videos. Despite his potential bottom-ness, he is a top where the organ is concerned (unless there’s something on the bench we can’t see). As someone raised with the idea that homosexuality represents a failure of some sort (by parents, a wayward clergyman, or too much time spent with Mom) I get why you’re weirded out by his probable homosexuality. It would be fun to think of a straight male being good at playing an instrument that calls up the same sorts of talents a pilot might need, but for some reason, most male organists in the US are gay. It seems like there are more straight male organists in the UK. Maybe that’s because it’s easier to get away with being eccentric over there. Hector Olivera is a straight organist but then again he’s not from the US. Anyway, you ought to cut ol’ Fred a break. He is talented and seems to have a good sense of humor during interviews. Besides, he hasn’t been arrested at a rest stop or anything that we know of, so he must be decent at keeping a lid on it.
this very beautiful song is killed by this dreadful organ its far too loud and overpowers the congregation ,i dont like the sound of them either ....its all too much ...
No one - NO ONE - plays hymns better than Fred Swann. He has been my hero for 55 years!
He is probably the best organist this country has ever seen! I'm glad to have met him, so humble, but can play rings around most of us!
To play this without music in front of you is truly a God-given talent!
Wow......just the fact he can play this wonderful hymn of praise without music in front of him on the organ is quite amazing!!
No one plays the organ like Fred wow ! What an incredible organist he was .
An absolute genius of the instrument! Not only is Fred a wonderful organist, but a warm hearted man!
Wonderful playing by an organist who is in my opinion in a class few ever get to. I also noticed that this is being played from memory as there is no music to be seen. Outstanding!!!
I just marvel at the way Fred nonchalantly put the stops in/out of play, while embellishing the hymn in his own style...
Mark Rocovich to be fair I'm pretty bad like this too - I'm forever orchestrating mid play
I was always criticized for overusing the Crescendo Pedal on the Mighty Wicks...I wish i had a beast like this to play on...I'da really rattled the stained glass windows with this hymn!!!!
Great to see and hear the proper person seated on this bench again.
Absolutely magnificent

Cheers for the organist, what a gift!!! Lovely rendtion of a classic hymn. ♥ The lyrics are heart-piercing.
Thanks for posting this video! Stunning pops to mind, to try to describe Fred's performance and the atmosphere generated by so many people singing one of my favorite hymns like they mean it! His bridges were so perfect, not too grandiose, but seriously indicative of a virtuoso.
Oh God how great thou art.Such am amazing hymn this is.the lyrics are beyond imaginary, purely from the spirit.

tamiasthechipmunk Well said.......
This is as commanded. PRAISE THE LORD!
Amen!
The organ could have been quieter. It is hard to make out the words being sung
In this case, anyway, the organist’s return to his old console was the focus, so no harm done.
no such thing as too loud :)
I know Fred and have heard him play many times. He’s an amazing musician!
Beautiful music
I myself have played this piece many times and love it so!!! it's meant to be done with any talent you use! he was Organist there for about 25 years before he retired there
I love Lord Jesus
I miss the hymns from the crystal cathedral
The footwork is amazing
😀👌🤝🤜🤛
Plays the hell out of it and then hits the "Cancel" button at the end! I just love it!
like a Boss
I have heard other versions but its quite enjoyable. Its a great hymn liked by all.
POW !!! GOD, I LOVE THIS ORGAN! AS ONLY FREDRICK SWANN CAN PLAY IT. (AND VIRGIL FOX!)
THE MUSIC IS BACK!!
One of the world greatest organist, I know Gabriel the arc Angel was playing along with him on his majestic trumpet, while GOD pat his divine foot.
Does he push trumpets around 1:13?
Yes he sure does
The title is All Hail not All Snail!
No, I don't agree with your point
Fred surely is the master at handling big organs ;)
SPECTACULAR 👏📣
Блестящий!
And we sing AMEN!
hallelujah!

And at 1:34 the solo!
Amen.
Oh, what I would not give to have seen Virgil Fox live at this organ.
Well the words are to show the power of Christ, so he's giving a more proclaiming feel to the organ by using the chamade pipes and loud reed pipes to give it a powerful message.
Sing it in G major, the way God intended.
Looks like the cockpit of a 747!
oh, my!
Easy, isn't it? (You just press the right notes at the right time, and the organ plays itself!)
Quick jump for the cancel. What's going on? Wanna be first in line for tea after service?
I'm guessing time constraints.
I'm pretty sure this is a player organ. See the tape deck on the left?
OK...couple things...why is his "music" written on a 3x5 index card? And yes, that cracked me up when he like vibrates the walls and then casually hits the cancel button like he was clocking out and going to lunch! LMAO

Not much to be done about it. It's just the recording method.
This is the very old version, but its still a great version.
My fav version
That is not a tape deck it is a plaque. I can assure you this is no"player organ"
!!:Hymn
What a shame.......glorious music lost forever that flowed from this church and from Coral Ridge Presbyterian.......our nation is surely on a downward slide toward mediocrity and the mundane.
Not at Trinity Episcopal Church here in Omaha! We have an excellent organist and choir master!
This was a right wing political church that made a pact with the devil. And lost.
Uriah Peep coral ridge is back!!!! They need some work on their choir, but they are using their glorious 178 rank Ruffatti again.
No, the Hour of Power was not right wing.
Hard to tell it, but the organ was already in really bad shape here. As Hector Olivera put it, you had to work around all the dead notes (pipes) and stops……and all of the dead birds inside pipes in the gallery organ pipes!
"A *praze" band - pass me the bucket!
I miss the "real" hop
Every hymn ever sung at the Crystal Cathedral was sung too fast. It isn't Mr. Swann's fault. He knows the proper tempo.
all hail the power of religion
Either the acoustics are much worse than I remember or that recording is just plain awful.
From what I can hear, it's simply a matter of overload on the audio recording. A pity that such a grand sound (over the top? - so what! - our faith is worth going over the top at times) is damaged by the resulting distortion.

"Christians" can't even agree on how a fucking hymn should be performed. (See comments below.) It would almost be comical if it weren't so pathetic.
+apiece ofdirt
LOL. Given your divisive and belligerent nature, as evidenced by this post and the one below, you must be a "Christian."
Go fuck yourself, you piece of shit.
He wasn't even trying... Sucks bad when a good organist sags.
what the heck do you mean by that then
Tôo fast And agressive !
Nice old gay bottom playing the organ
Chester Izzy literally every male organist I know is gay. Even me 😆
