- In celebration of the birthday of one of my favorite characters in Love Live! as well as possibly one of the most underrated and misunderstood characters in the series, I decided to take yet another look into one of the core members of Aqours: Watanabe You! While she does get her own episode, it seems that people fail to realize what her purpose is in the story and just how important she actually is. Many fans will claim that she has no bigger character moments and seems to fall into the shadows while Chika continued to take the spotlight, but statements like that are fundamentally misunderstanding just who she is and why her not taking the center might be one of the most important reasons why Aqours’ tiny light was able to reach as far as it did. It could even be said that, had Watanabe You never pushed the normal monster forward, there would be no Aqours. Without the girl who pulled her friend towards the light so they could shine together, Chika would have never found her shine and Aqours would have never left their mark on history. So let’s go full speed ahead and dive right into it.
This is Watanabe You, the most underrated support that was there for the light that saved Uranohoshi.

You is and has always been my best girl since day one of seeing her. Without You I’m not sure I would even be as much into the series as I am now. She’s been a constant source of happiness for me. Her beautiful design, her entrancing and happy voice. Her amazing and tear jerking singing voice. Her story arc brought me and will continue to bring me to tears every time I see it. She has beautiful lyrics (as featured in CYaRon). All of my love live plushies and figures are You. Without You I’d still probably be sad everyday.... she’s changed my life, And for the better. I’ll always love You with all my heart for causing me to smile every minute, no second I see her. She’s not underrated. She has lots of love and Of course is deserving of it. I love You Watanabe

I always felt like she was shafted in S1 because of Riko (I've loved You since the beginning), and because of that, I ended up really hating Riko. I didn't like how she was taking Chika away from You.
But this...this shows...how it's NOT ABOUT Riko replacing You...

to be honest I feel like episode 11 of S1 kinda of made the whole fanbase hate chika and riko and I think that both chika and riko are underrated and do not deserve the hate they get

The first two singles started it, and the anime just kinda...helped move it along..
It was necessary to compete that little arc, I'll call it.
But it still gave us more of a reason to feel a little salty towards Riko.
I mean, in episode THREE, she was all, “I love you" to Chika, and they weren't even together long enough because they still hadn't officially grown as a club yet.
I feel the same. I never thought that I would encounter someone with the EXACT same feelings as me. Because of how I noticed that Riko has gotten closer to Chika, I started feeling bad for You. I kinda felt that she was jealous. I was right. I'm glad they concluded this problem in the anime. If they hadn't, it would stay a mystery forever. I would've probably hated Riko, too. She's still my least favorite character in the anime, but at least now I can accept her.

Most of people's issue i've seen was wishing You had more screentime in S2 iirc. Her role was thicc and big despite that. ❤️
@i .candy I agree with this so much, I love the aqours second years a lot but I did notice that the anime pretended like riko was chika’s friend her whole life when it was the other way and in general I still felt the scenes of you and riko interacting very awkward but that’s just me

I knew there was something about You the moment I saw her. She is the friend everybody needs and Chika is so lucky. There are many people who can relate to You Watanabe, and one of them is me. I have a best friend, and we started drifting for awhile and I thought that this was how its suppose to be, for them to be happy with their friend and not me. I know that they always looked down on themself and I was always there to help pull them up. 2 days ago, I had confessed how I was feeling towards them and in the end, things are fixed. I no longer feel left out.
But in the end, being left out or not I wanted them to be happy, I wanted them to love themself and see them the way I do. I was told by them that my existence keeps them going, that me being here is enough. It would take personal experience or paying close attention to understand the role of You Watanabe. So many people fail to see You's role and purpose, when its clear to me and many others. I continue to push my friend forward, to find their own shine as well. So many people are in the exact situation as You and Chika, including me and my friend. You needs more appreciated. If you're honest with your friends and continue to love them for all eternity, you'll be together no matter how bumpy the road is. Thank you for taking your time to read this buried comment.

I like her loyalty she's indeed one of the sweetest characters in Love Live! by basically ignoring her personal goals or even her feelings to make her friends happy.

Finally,someone who understands how great You actually is, how much she suffered all the time,that she's actually the best and that she deserves a lot more than that! She deserves to stand at the spot light but people just keep underestimating her saying that she's not that important and that Riko and others are better than her when the truth is exact opposite,she's so underrated,she deserves a lot more than she actually gets..no one seems to get how awesome she is..she doesn't have any big roles in the songs and that just annoys me,after all she does no one appreciates her effort, i really wish they'd give her more attention,that she'd have more songs where she's the center or even close to that,i wish the day would come when everyone would realize her existence.

I love both You and Riko, you would think they have a stronger relationship due to Chika, but instead, have this weird awkward relationship on the matter, if anything (and they pretty much had a 1-sided view on it, and they had a single conversation about it in the anime but completely drop the issue), they now have mutual relationship on how their friendship towards her.
I feel that the reason that the 2nd single had You as the center because on how she had a supportive role on the 1st single. I believed the community had a role on that as well.
Yep, this is why she was my initial favorite. That is, until Episode 8/9 where Dia forcibly changed my mind. Both of them support and are there for the others. These two are best.
