I loved this movie as a kid, and then one day, i couldn't find my dvd. Turns out my parents threw it away and distracted me long enough for me to semi forget about it lol
I owned the DVD too, if it were a VHS it might have worn out. We got it cheap because those were the last years of movie rental places. We bought Catwoman too. We didn't know any better.
Christine Baranski alone makes How the Grinch Stole Christmas more than worth a watch! Loved this review, I feel like a just time traveled. I can taste the Shrek-colored ketchup and everything
in my first year of uni i created a drinking game for this movie that we used to do as pres for the club, i will now present this to the culture: shot every time: - alec baldwin appears - racist joke - cultural appropriation - sexist joke - the taiwanese parliament appears - child abuse occurs - thing 1 and 2 appear - the boss yells FIREDDDDDDD-duh - mike myers talks to the audience - dakota fanning annoys you - you want to punch conrad - nevins (nevis?) (the dog) runs away - the mum says conrad is a bad kid - alec baldwin threatens to send conrad to military school - purple gunk finish your drink when: - the fish speaks - there’s a brand deal - the cat on the swing after getting punched in the balls - the cat piñata - the cat cuts his tail off - alec baldwin comes out of the pipe you will be pleasantly unable to speak or stand by the end of the game, use it well!
I don’t blame you guys for not talking about the plot all that much because there’s not much to discuss. The contractual obligations and your movie year guessing game was way more fun
I cannot imagine a less pleasant experience than being contractually obligated to be the lead in a movie that requires you to sit through hours of makeup every day (for 3 MONTHS of filming!)
Oh my god. I have never seen this movie but 3:22 just unlocked something deep in my brain. I think I had a toy… maybe a plush? Of cat and the hat from this film that said this line. I have 100% heard that line before.
In your Death Becomes Her review you were thinking about who could have played Bruce Wilis's role, and now I'm thinking that Alec could have been stellar!
1) this movie is ingrained in my mind for some reason I’m so glad yall reviewed! 2) Andrew did so good at the 2003 guessing game i was screaming lmaooo
The issue with Cat in the Hat is that it's not a movie for children, it's a movie for 20 something stoners to watch during the frantic bit of the high before moving on to The Room during the mellowing out period
I loved this movie as a kid lol still quote it all the time with my brother its Iconic edit: as for the Jim Carrey Grinch movie I'm kind of shocked you haven't seen it, if not because you watch everything, then the fact that Christine Baranski is in it
Perhaps a month of Patreon requested movies would help dwindle the list down? I know you guys get so so busy so makes sense it’s hard to get through them. Lady Catherine DeBorough month!
As a kid with major ADHD I watched this movie alot....but I also enjoyed the behind the scenes stuff. But oh god is this movie a nightmare now And yeah as Avryl said, the director Bo Welch is primarily a production designer, which is why the sets and visuals for this are so pronounced.
Oh my god!! I went through a phase where this was the only movie I would watch! Especially when we got rid of our VHS player and I couldn’t watch Annie (starring Carol Burnet and Tim Curry) or Barry Live at Radio City anymore
This is one of those films that I watched so much as a kid that I relish in everything that it is wrong with it like a youth serum. Cat in the Hat is my Showgirls.
omg avaryl has never seen the grinch? i honestly think you'd enjoy it, it is miles and miles better than the cat in the hat, i know it kinda has a bad reputation but i rewatched it not too long ago and i gotta say it is really great, the late 90s and early 2000s is on full display, with crazy hair, practical makeup effects, weird cinematography, architecture and all around heart of the movie, it is honestly a delight to rewatch for me. especially the 'where are you christmas' song, grinch's backstory and his two lesbian mothers, and just so many iconic memable moments. please do watch and review it 🥹
sooo glad this was requested. i was born in 2000 so this was a very formative movie for young me, and i can’t say i didn’t laugh at a bunch of the clips you played! the wacko world at the end terrified me though
I work in the art dept and with the first few shots I was like, wow they REALLY gave art whatever budget they wanted, that's incredible! Finding out an accomplished production designer directed this movie makes soooo much sense.
I saw it on DVD back in the days when I was like 20. My mind just went to like "Is this a fever dream?" Still to this day I LOVE the movie because it's so frantic, bonkers, and I was old enough to get most references. The "check"/Chech-joke in the car had me in stitches. I would not claim it to be good by any means, but it is still amazing that it got made with all those talented people on and off the screen (Bo Welch is a legend in my mind) Glad that you covered it. Love your show since like forever. Keep it up!
so i watched this film a million times when i was a kid and it is so visually iconic to me and literally every line is delivered in such a distinct way that theyre all soundbites in my head so im always baffled when people hate it because i have such a strong memory of it. watching this i now get it but i will continue to be an advocate of it lol
I worked at a movie theater in high school as a projectionist during precisely this time period. Holy crap! You brought me back! I had to build & screen every film that came into the 9 theater Carmike & I remember ALL those movies. Mostly because I would spend the 2 hours between threading films for showtimes watching whatever was playing. I am forever haunted by the worst film from that era: Gigli Ps- Thanks for all you do! You 2 are the hardest working ppl in showbiz
Mike Myers is my favorite comedic actor of all time... but I never saw this movie. He has to be in the right role and even back in 2003 I knew this movie was not going to be good.
I rewatched this months ago and honestly I forgot how WILD IT IS. Honestly I wanna see the universe where The Grinch and this changed movies so we still got as much love put into the set.
I love how different peoples opinions can be because in my opinion this is a cinematic MASTERPIECE😭 this is my humor, my childhood, my peace, it’s beautiful🥲🥹✨ it’s HILARIOUS😭😭😭
I’m sorry I had to come back Avril there is a NIGHT and DAY difference between a live action, cat and hat and a live action grinch I promise I promise you have to trust me OH MY GOD.
My brother and I probably watched this movie a million times when we were kids, looking back i can't even say we really loved it or cared abt the story it was just such a weird and colorful movie that we couldn't look away lol. I have vivid memories of even as kids having to lower the tv volume in the loudest scenes, this movie was entirely too much
Never seen it, totally forgot this movie even existed, and after watching your review, I can see why. Your review was very entertaining though! I do love ‘The Grinch,’ so please consider it for a Xmas retro-review this year!
I have never seen seen 'View from the Top', but I love it because of Richard Ayoade's book about it. Him telling Olivia Colman about it is adorable - ua-cam.com/video/o0BWXXM8Q9o/v-deo.html I also need a gif of Avaryl's Sprockets dance for whenever I need cheering up!
I had a suggestion for summer camp if you haven't come up with one yet. Summer Camp 2:Electric Boogooaloo. The sequels to hits i.e. Teen Wolf 2, Bill&Ted's Incredible Journey, etc. I think there can be some real good ones. I named 2 already.
Wow. You guys are still making content. UA-cam unsubscribed me from you again, and this time unfortunately it stuck longer than intended. I just thought you stopped sometime during the pandolliñatron. Anyway. Glad to see Andrew and his shorts are still alive and well. ❤
This movie must have had a long run or came out slightly later in the UK because I distinctly remember going to the cinema with a friend and trying to decide on this or Scooby Doo 2. We picked Cat in the Hat and half way through we sneaked into Scooby Doo 2 hoping it would be better. I don't think either were a particularly good choice!
21:54 when my mom showed me beetlejuice when I was younger, she told me Alec Baldwin’s “brother” played Adam (she is a notorious liar). So whenever I’d watch beetlejuice, I thought of how hot alec baldwin’s brother is. I believed this lie until literally this very moment, when you said Adam was Alec baldwin himself, NOT his brother.
Oh can we have a Robin Williams I love your work? I mean it's a bit of a duh but his films were so seminal to my child. My robot vacuum is called Weebo because of Flubber.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't they review View From The Top as a retro review? Sometimes, I can't remember what has been reviewed by MB/used as clips/reviewed by HDTGM.
I know its bad but I do think a lot of my absurdist humor as a kid came from this. It also was one of the two dvds at my dad’s house so there wasn’t much choice
I've only ever seen the trailer for this film and figured it would be miserable, but it seems like something I should watch while stoned?? Also there's a universe where the Alec Baldwin plot is the main focus of the film and maybe the early 00's was the only time when it could have worked, these days it would be some dark hyper realistic interpretation with no joy
I love this new game "Andrew names the top 10 grossing movies of the year from memory"
I love when Avaryl enlightens us on her past phases, such a multifaceted diva
The way I clicked faster than I could mentally process what I had just read
Last video it was "Demi Moore is in Ghost?" and this one it's, "Has he [Alec Baldwin] been in a Tim Burton movie?" Love ya Andrew lmao
I'm still mad about my mother so thoughtlessly trashing my dvd collection😢
Christine Baranski alone makes How the Grinch Stole Christmas more than worth a watch! Loved this review, I feel like a just time traveled. I can taste the Shrek-colored ketchup and everything
in my first year of uni i created a drinking game for this movie that we used to do as pres for the club, i will now present this to the culture:
shot every time:
- alec baldwin appears
- racist joke
- cultural appropriation
- sexist joke
- the taiwanese parliament appears
- child abuse occurs
- thing 1 and 2 appear
- the boss yells FIREDDDDDDD-duh
- mike myers talks to the audience
- dakota fanning annoys you
- you want to punch conrad
- nevins (nevis?) (the dog) runs away
- the mum says conrad is a bad kid
- alec baldwin threatens to send conrad to military school
- purple gunk
finish your drink when:
- the fish speaks
- there’s a brand deal
- the cat on the swing after getting punched in the balls
- the cat piñata
- the cat cuts his tail off
- alec baldwin comes out of the pipe
you will be pleasantly unable to speak or stand by the end of the game, use it well!
Avaryl having never seen The Grinch was something I never thought would have been in the history of the world
I'm only 15 minutes in and I'm absolutely obsessed. As someone the same age as Andrew, bringing up that "time and place" was spot on. Love you guys!!!
I have 100% heard that line before.
fun fact: bo welch is also married to catherine o'hara!
In your Death Becomes Her review you were thinking about who could have played Bruce Wilis's role, and now I'm thinking that Alec could have been stellar!
I love how you guys spend most of this review for "The Cat in the Hat", not talking about "The Cat in the Hat". :D
I love that half of this is putting us in the place and time of when this came out so we can somehow figure out how it got made
5:44 - you jumped off that Burton boat quicker than most of us did.
Truth. I really stuck in there, hanging onto hope, way longer than I should have
@@KD-wb4fj I was sorely disappointed in his version of Alice but I was truly done with him after whatever the fuck Dark Shadows was
1) this movie is ingrained in my mind for some reason I’m so glad yall reviewed! 2) Andrew did so good at the 2003 guessing game i was screaming lmaooo
I love that fully half of this review is avoiding actually talking about the movie itself.
oh you HAVE to review jim carrey’s grinch this christmas
One of my fave SNL sketches is Bill Hader as the Cat in the Hat. I cant recommend it enough. The Way he says "Linda?" breaks me every time.
I would drink Bill Hader's bathwater. But not as Cat In The Hat.
The way I burst out laughing when the 2 Fast 2 Furious wiki page came up
Omg, Avaryl's face reacting to the 'CGI fish with teeth' is hilarious. She kind of looked like Alyssa Edwards doing the 'backrolls?!' face!
Andrew playing Family Feud on 2003 films is hillarious
Avaryl as Dieter dancing is 🤌🏼 chef's kiss
The issue with Cat in the Hat is that it's not a movie for children, it's a movie for 20 something stoners to watch during the frantic bit of the high before moving on to The Room during the mellowing out period
I loved this movie as a kid lol still quote it all the time with my brother its Iconic
edit: as for the Jim Carrey Grinch movie I'm kind of shocked you haven't seen it, if not because you watch everything, then the fact that Christine Baranski is in it
Watched this with my siblings a few months ago and I too made them listen to me read off Bo Welch's production design credits.
Freddy vs Jason is the essence of 2003 imo
9:34 i was not expecting a tati westbrook reference in a cat in the hat review 😭
Suckin deeck and cohk???
@@martingomezmarinich7059oh my god… time and place!
This video should just be called: “2003!”
To be fair Alec Baldwin looks completely different in Beetle Juice
Love the vids where you take mins to even start talking about the movie! You guys have SO many movie facts in those brains
Perhaps a month of Patreon requested movies would help dwindle the list down? I know you guys get so so busy so makes sense it’s hard to get through them. Lady Catherine DeBorough month!

I feel like I didn’t give the Scooby Doo movies it’s flowers at its time. Mostly because I didn’t appreciate Linda Cardellini yet
This is one of those films that I watched so much as a kid that I relish in everything that it is wrong with it like a youth serum. Cat in the Hat is my Showgirls.
The way so much of my formative movie watching years were informed by 2003 is...terrifying? exciting? I don't know but this was a fun nostalgia trip
Y’all should retro review who framed Roger rabbit! Would love to hear y’all takes. One of my favorite movies
i was born in 2002 and i watched this movie every day from ages 5-9? i am a film major now….impact

This was a go to watch for me as a kid, and to this day it is certified fresh for me😂 especially the cooking show scene
I had a mentor who was a producer on the film and told me it was her job to try and save it.

You need to read Richard Ayoade's book, 'Ayoade On Top' critiquing (as if it was a serious movie) - you guessed it - 'View from the Top'!

are mike and alec playing the same character and is the cat the imaginary version of alec from the kids perspective
That was exactly my take
I can't tell if 2003 was a great year of movies or I was just 14 and so I've seen most of them?
The director, Bo Welch, is also married to Catherine O’Hara! That right there shows he has good taste 😆
I think Andrew was thinking of Casper, which does star Bill Pullman as a wacky professor type.
Oh my god PLEASE review The Grinch this holiday season! Christine Baranski and Molly Shannon!!
Holy fucking shit

The Italian Job is a contractually obligated movie for Edward Norton

Omg @13:04 Avaryl lipsync assassin
Wait- wasn’t “regular man” supposed to be Martha Stewart??!
Or have I had the wrong canon in my head for 2 decades 😭💀
