The original Gregorian chant was strictly by men only, and in medieval Latin.
I find the original Gregorian chant was heavy, deeply sad, a chant for those tired of this world and pleading release of a sad life of endless suffering.

When I hear this beautiful chant, it's as if it's a "calling"; a calling for my soul to return "home." The pull is so stong and magnetic . I just can't explain it but it brings me to tears when I hear it.

i also was listening to gregorian while i was in hospital with c-19. they really help on a subtle level. and had some hare krishna kirtans on my phone as well. i was laying in bed at night listening to these..soothing and calming. im glad you recovered too. all the best

Gregorian-Latin Chant is the music of the Angels. If you feel the urge or need to be actually present to this wonderful music.. get yourself to a Catholic Latin / Tridentine Mass on Sundays... this is the sound- essence of each Traditional Mass and will always be so.

but in all this i must admit that in the name of that god (which doesn't really exist) some fabulous music has been created through many centuries.

When I listen to the sounds of Hindu monks repeating OM, I feel relaxed and can focus on thinking, breathing and creating an inner calm strength. Gregorian chants, on the other hand, affect me quite differently. It feels as if everything has opened to the outside of me. I feel vulnerable, filled with vague longing, and start to cry. These are the sounds to listen to when you have the chance for intimacy away from everyone.

Hmmm ... what did they teach you at school ? Look for Hildegard von Bingen. Several rich people went to study in Al Andaluz - Spain - and revived the knowledge. In some monasteries the knowledge was kept safe from the crazy papacy. Jan van Ruysbroeck sounds more like a Buddhist than a catholic. Look for the peasant revolt in England and recognise that the political, economical and legal awareness of simple people by far surpasses our arrogant confused idiocy today. The Light makes do with whatever it can find to reach us.

This is the Vespers hymn for the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. It has the sentiments of one who would choose Jesus over all other joys, because they have experienced His sweetness. Since words fail to express how ardently a devout soul loves his Lord and Master, the accompanying melody helps a bit. It is beautiful, and is worthy of such sublime lyrics.

This music makes me feel at peace, so much so I want this peace to last forever and never feel the pain, hurt, and stress that life has bought to many.i want my spirit to travel the universe and experience all the beauty that we will never get to know in this Earth.
