My grandfather always grew tomatoes on the ground - they would grow- reboot- grow again - we hunted for tomatoes. Good memories
Sounds great Thank you David
Ive watched a few tomato growing vids & this is the 1st 1 that is simple enough for me to understand, a lot of people get to techy and all im trying to do is gain confidence to grow my own &plant some stuff inthe open fields near my house.
Brill Thank you
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one whose plants seem to be growing slow this year. As I read the other comments below, it seems to be happening all over,
Better times are here now
Thank you Connie
Last year (where you posted your comment) my tomato plant was growing like crazy. Nice sunny and warm weather from mid March. This year however, we still get night frost mid April. It's annoying as I'm using a much bigger container this year, and I had hoped to get even more tomatoes compared to last year (cherry tomatoes, wow they tasted amazing!).
That is really interesting, I'm a newbie, but I was wondering why everything is taking so long and not progressing as I thought. Thanks for the comment/reassurance!
I' love your support cage. Definitely going to copy it! I've heard that when you top them though they stop putting out blossoms and producing fruit, just concentrating on enlarging the fruit that they've already pushed out.
Tomatoes are my favourite, i reallly love them as you get a mega harvest lol
Very true
Thank you
Another great use of a dibber Ivan! You keep showing us brilliant ideas that really should be obvious but we never seem to think of.
Thank you Lesley
My peppers and tomatoes are growing sooooo slowly, so I was desperate for Ivan to make a video 😂 good timing! Thanks Ivan 🤗
Thank you Sophie
Thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart for using your spare time to educate others because as a complete beginner i am learning so much from you!
You are so welcome
Thank you Steph
If you ever bring out a book....all other ones we have read either omit to tell us stuff or assume we understand everything,we need it in basic, first time growers terms, you explain everything that we need to know!
Thank you for that Victoria
you are my go to gardening blogger Ivan . Keep them coming , i love it .
Brill
Thank you Jon
Thankyou Ivan your slow and steady explanations are perfect for my needs avid follower now.
Brilliant Thank you Elizabeth
You have inspired me to try this out with a Superweet 100 tomato I've got over. Will be interesting to see how it goes. Thank you!
Brill
Thank you Kate
As I have just a balcony and can only grow in containers/raised planters I really appreciate this video. Thanks Ivan :) Thus far I have grown WAY too many tomatoes and peppers from seed (didn't expect such good germination and have donated some) along withcucumbers, herbs, radishes, spring onions and various salad leaves/plants. Just waiting for night temps to get above 10C before planting out Tomatoes, Peppers and Cucumbers which I have hardened off.
Hi Dee we are all guilty of over sowing but its better to have too many than not enough
Thank you
Thank you for this great insightful video, me and my are doing our first lot of tomato plants this year, we have 4 plants in 35 litter pots in a small pop up green house 😂 they are allready taking over the green house 😮
Great stuff Thank you Dean
Love your accent Ivan - makes me feel homesick! 🤪
Haha Thank you
Very clear, helpful set of tips - I never realised that you could train an indeterminate tomato to be shorter and more bushy.
I have a bunch (too many!) of tomato seedlings that I am ready to pot out and wondered what are your thoughts about planting two tomato plants in each 30L pot? They are two types of determinate cherry tomato. I've seen some sources in the Internet say it's feasible, but wondered what you think.
If they are dwarf determinate they will be fine
Thank you
Thanks for showing the frame, really helpful and will be using. 👍
Thank you
Luv it - Make a bi’ of an ‘ole in i’…
Thank you
nice
Thank you
Thanks Ivan, as always very helpful loving the container gardening. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Sheila
Thanks Ivan .. very helpful 👍🏿
Thank you Dee
Thanks Ivan, that's a great set up making a very good and sturdy Tomatoe cage and with very good advice about topping indeterminant tomatoes. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thank you Stevie
Still learning from you, getting my plants today!
Great stuff and best of luck Natalie
Nice another great video i will definitely put this method of the frame to practice when again attempting to grow tomatoes.
Thank you Ivan
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant, instructional vid as they all are. Cheers Ivan.
Very kind of you Thank you
Brilliant idea, thanks. Great tutorial.
Thank you Steph
Enjoyed watching this... thank you
Thank you too Trish
Thank you for that great explanation for tomato growing ...the best ive seen in a long time ...looking forward to seeing more of your tips ..
Thank you Rose very much appreciated
I planted potatoes and tomatoes in the same pot, now that is saving space! Growing really quickly in England of all places lol.
Be carefull with that they are both members of the Nightshade Family as are Peppers so are prone to the same Diseases and will spread from plant to plant
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Thanks for the heads up!
Exactly the video I needed. I've got a few small Sweet Millions growing (very slowly) but hope they will buck-up soon. Cheers.
Dont worry Margaret they will
Thank you
Your video's are always so helpful! I will be making these supports this year. Love using cane
Awesome! Thank you!
Enjoyed the video Ivan thanks for the information on potting toms great to watch stay safe BA94Antrim n Ireland
You too William
Thank you
My grandfather always let his tomatoes grow on the ground - we would hunt for the tomatoes- they rerouted all the time
Sounds great Thank you David
Nice video.
Thank you
Agree, why pay the money out when you can make your own thats just as good...
So true
Thank you Carol
👍👍
Thank you Bonnie
Ivan this is my 1st year of trying to grow tomatoes, just checking do i need to put grit in the container then compost and feed?Thank-you for your video's so helpful and appreciated 🙏
I just add multi purpose compost and fish blood and bone Then feed Tomato food once every 2 weeks Thank you Michelle
Another great vid Ivan, is it ok to put some of those little white stones in that hold water?
Yes may need some Thank you
Ah thankyou so much!😊
Watch all your videos! I still get confused as to which "suckers" to nip off incase im doing it wrong or snap off the wrong bits....and if there's a more effective watering system for growing toms in pots? Or would it help to have them slightly raised on bricks etc to help with drainage? So excited ive managed to grow from seed this year! 😊
Hi Clare raising on bricks would help with drainage just bear in mind as it get hotter they will dry out quicker
You can use watering globes for containers if you are away for more than a day during summer
Thank you Clare
To re pot my tomatoes seedlings (which are now small plants) should I re pot them into a bigger pot with potting mix or should I go straight for the grow bag compost? Don’t want to over do it while there still small. First year growing, lots to learn 😬 what do you feed tomato’s with? You said every two weeks. Many thanks 🙏🏻
I usually pot them on until they are around 8 inches tall then plant them
Thank you Clare
happening all over
Sure is
Thank you
Loved the video, but disappointed you touched on food safe stamp but did not mention what to look for, don’t forget google is riddled with conflicting information. So why don’t you give us a video with just that. Keep up the good work 😊
Yes good point will have to address that Thank you for the feedback
What do you think of tomato grow bags Ivan? I've just bought 6 plants and 3 bags but not planted yet. Should I put in containers?
Try a mix of both and see what works best
I have never used grow bags just containers as i can move them if i need to
Thank you Ann
Great video Ivan. What size is the white pot?
Hi Mike its around 15 litre but up to 25 would be better
Thank you
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Thanks Ivan your videos are great. Learning so much from them.
Running out of containers can I grow Tom's in grow bag
Sure can they will do fine Thank you
What is the best compost to buy for tomatoes in pots?
I just use Multi Purpose and add Fish Blood & Bone Thank you
You should show us how to plant the tomatoes from the beginning, like the soil first, then carefully place the tomatoes into the soil,
not showing us that the plant is already well planted.
We do on our previous videos from seeding to harvest
Thank you
I hear a propa Yorkshire lad, Sheffield mate?
Hi Nathan originally Nottinghamshire around 15 miles away
Thank you
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Well I've got 6 tomato plants all potted and caned up thanks to your video, thanks! I will be having a thorough look around your channel and subscribed.
Hey Ivan, would I get away with a 10L pot? I've got some here and it would save me buying others. It'll be for gardeners delight tomatoes
Would only grow small but could also get root bound but if you are anything like me you will give it a go
Thank you Natalie
Lol I might try one to see how it goes! Thank you!
Hi Ivan, yesterday got myself a tomato plant(Shirley tomato) from Aldi, how do i know if its determinate or indeterminate?
That variety is an indeterminate so grows to 6ft or more
Thank toy
@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Thank you. I hope to learn a lot more from your videos.
one of my cucumber plants has two flowers!! They are still inside and i had planned to pot on as there are 3 plants in one pot. any advice?
Hi Andrea Cucumbers need a lot of nutrients and root space so best not to grow together you could carefully separate the plants or cut away the smaller ones if you do not need them all
Thank you
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk thanks for your reply. They are all in really good shape. i have a deep large square container which i plan to use and put one in each corner, i have 3 plants, all same size and the others soon to flower so will get on with repotting this weekend.
I’m not much of a gardener really, but I bought a little tomato plant yesterday, repotted it and left it outside. This morning the leaves were all floppy and curling, like they’re withering😔 What did I do wrong? Was it because maybe it was too cold outside? Can it be saved? I’ve got it in the sunshine now. Ty.
It could be over watering or not enough it should recover if sorted but if you are in a cold area less than 50f through the night that could also cause it
Thank you
Ah right. Thank you. I will take care of it and hopefully it will perk up🙏🏼☺️
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk I’m in the Uk btw. Do you think I should bring it in the house at night, just until the weather warms up a bit more?
Always best to be cautious until the end of May
Thank you
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-uk Ok. Thank you for the advice😊
This video could be 5 min long
Thank you
It could also have been 45 minutes long 🤷♂️
@@ivans-gardening-allotment-ukthanks for a good and educational video, where ive learned What i need to for a setup om my balcony.. not your fault that tik tok brains cant concentrate more than 10 min 🙃
