Just because you're a minimalist doesn't mean you're allergic to money! I think it's very valuable to promote useful products and services, as they do improve our lives. I think the biggest thing is to sell/promote with authenticity and not play on people's insecurities. You're doing a phenomenal job at being dignified and authentic, keep up the brand collaborations!

I honestly think you do so much good with your videos... you help people, you put out interesting content, you spread a positive message. Don’t worry too much about the ads. It’s a small ‘price’ to pay but I really think on average your videos have such a positive impact. I hope you can get some cool partnerships with sponsors that you like. You totally deserve it and I appreciated your honesty in this video.

It is and honestly I feel like I'm paying less of a "price" here with sponsors and ads than I do as a nurse in the health care system so there's that

A sponsorship it's just a way to keep making videos and the truth is that you are a human being and you need to live. So it's absolutely no reason to be guilty because ultimately people will buy what you present only if they like and really want or need. You only speak about something, the decision to buy or not to buy =)) ..... remains to the viewer! So all it's good!!!
    Awesome video Janell! xoxo

This video is very smart, kind and humble. I understand you dont want to encourage/support ads before your videos, and its sometimes really bad shit getting promoted. All of the late night comedy that makes fun of trump ALL have trump ads before them, and we dont care lol. You deserve everything that makes you happy, including money, (unfortunately). I will support you NO PROB if you turn on ads/promote cool items.

I think you have the right attitude when it comes to sponsorship! Not selling something for the sake of selling, but being mindful of the products you promote. You need money to live in this world and travel and we can't be mad at you for needing that income!

the dealbreaker for me is usually when creators stop being transparent and when they force-feed products/subscriptions. i’m very happy to see you aren’t doing either. you’re being honest and open. you care about our opinion. you care about your audience. you’re true to your character - and you’ve got a good character. ❤️

I appreciate your honesty! Honestly, most people probably don’t even notice the ads or associate them with you, we’re just used to hitting “skip” and anticipating your videos. Sponsorships are great because of the control. Just because you’re a minimalist doesn’t mean that you can’t recommend something that someone may want/need for their minimal life. If you’re concerned about promoting “things” though, I have also seen “Square Space” and “Skill Share” sponsorships that are website sponsorships, so you could look into those or something similar. I appreciate any effort, without judgement, that you put forth to continue your content because it’s great! Keep being awesome :)

  • @LaLaLaura

Another creator I watch, My Green Closet, explained ads in a way that really made sense to me: the ad that UA-cam chooses isn't one that the creator necessarily supports. Making an ad yourself allows you to work with and promote brands that you truly believe in. I think if you start doing advertorial videos that would be fine. I would suggest maybe doing them as a supplement to your regular upload schedule- do an extra ad video rather than replace a normal video with an ad, if that makes sense. Either way, I totally support you doing occasional ads.
I think partnering like brands such as WealthSimple or audible would work with the content you're already creating because they aren't physical items. You might want to avoid Better Help. I can't recall exactly what happened but I know that Phil DeFranco was partnered with them and has sense discontinued working with them due to some sort of misunderstanding where they weren't hiring fully accredited therapists (or something like that). I know you didn't ask for specific examples but I just wanted to share them because I've seen other minimalist youtubers work with these companies.
I hope this was helpful! :)

I love your honesty and it’s hard because UA-cam audiences never understand the amount of work that goes into videos and that sometimes you need a little kickback! I have been struggling with this because though my channel doesn’t reflect minimalism or being vegan those are in fact important values to be that I want to keep in tact no matter what. I have been back and forth with amazon affiliate stuff but I’m not sure how I feel about the company though there are a lot of great products that would relate to my content through there.
Love your honesty and I don’t honk it’s bad if you want to do partnerships with products you have tried and go with your beliefs. In a way I think that UA-cam helps with minimalism because I always research products I’m considering and it helps me make a decision if it’s right for me before I buy and can keep me from purchasing things I realize we’re not what I wanted!

Ashley & Todd Explore there is a lot of small businesses selling on amazon. They do make money off people selling but It isn’t necessarily an amazon product. They are just in charge of the fulfillment/customer service. (It is also better for sellers to have amazon do this because you qualify to sell via prime.) I have an eco friendly company and I am an amazon seller. It is easier for businesses to leverage off amazons platform since that is where all the customers are. More eyeballs on your product helps spread the message and reach more people. So as a brand owner I appreciate when people/influencers recommend my product or use affiliate links.
I make money, amazon take their cut and the influencer takes their cut too! Everyone wins!

You should always pay people for their time. Doing wholesome sponsorships with companies, that you respect, and respect you, go for it! You respect your audience hugely and I hope you feel the same about us. More creators should take a left out of your book n be human beings on this platform understanding human beings are watching and reacting, not "influences" and "subscribers". Thank you for your context Janell, I really enjoy watching your videos and being such a humble creature! It wouldn't be the same watching you promote something just for the money. I have been watching your videos for at least a couple of years; what I've noticed about almost every youtuber is that once they reach a certain amount of subscribers they do end up promoting products and obviously cashing in on them, even if they are the most astute minimalists, anti-consumists etc. It can be quite disapointing. However, I do feel that if you're promoting a product you actually use, something that helps you fulfill your purpose as whatever you are - then there's no harm in that and it's great that you can help supplement your income doing the same. If you suddenly started using new products that you never used before - and claimed this was part of the whole lifestyle minimalism thing, then I'd be put off. One channel in particular, I used to love her videos and then I noticed every video was like a commercial for Dyson vaccumes lol. Like honestly - I'm watching because I enjoy the cleaning and lifestyle - not because I wanted someone to pitch a sale to me. The only advice I can give from the viewer perspective is be careful how you word what you market - if someone is very obviously creating a video solely for the purpose of sales, I click off immediately. Stay humble and stay honest, and you'll keep my loyalty!

I personally think advertising is really toxic for individuals’ mental health because the tactics used to sell products inherently involve undermining some aspect of the viewer’s life, and to make them feel in need of something material to solve a problem that the ad itself invented. I hate being constantly awash in advertising just to keep content free. That’s why I pay for UA-cam premium so that creators I like are paid for their content and not by forcing me to watch advertising. I’m not sure exactly how Premium dollars are allocated but I think at least for me, it is a totally worthwhile expense because of how much of my media I consume from UA-cam and how much value I derive from hearing people’s stories (like yours!).

  • @lizzieinMT

I like how thoughtful you are about partnerships and adds. I think that it really comes down to how the creator/filmmaker presents the partnerships that makes the difference. If they are really useful and good products that align with the values you believe in and share with us in your community of followers I think it can actually be a good thing! It makes a lot of sense to manage what you love and also balance how you do that out with how you can support yourself monetarily doing that. Favorites videos of items you like with Amazon links is also a way to go as a middle ground to avoid conflicting ideals until you get sponsors you align with.
Your audience should still be able to decide if any such item will work for them and purchase if they see fit, up side of this is you promote what you like and may learn of better alternatives via comments.

You totally still have my respect! I would love to see company's that you find good or useful. And if anything I think you've gained even more admiration from me! You work so hard, and chose what you want in your creative life and work carefully. You put genuine effort into it. I admire that.

Do what you have to do! The fact that you put so much effort into these videos, and cared enough to make this video says a lot, and we appreciate it. I think you'll do a great job of weeding out the products that aren't worth it.

Girl, do it! I think it’s all about a balance. And as long as you stay true to your lifestyle and do sponsorships with brands you really love there shouldn’t be an issue. Don’t feel guilty. You’ll be providing a service to us by showing things that we may like to have in our life that’s better version of something we already use. :)

As long as they aren't every video, reflect your beliefs, and are honest, I personally have no problem with sponsorships/product reviews. I'll keep watching.

I WILL WATCH ANYTHING YOU MAKE. End of story. I don't care if you put products in your vids that you are cool with. Do whatever you gotta do, I'll be here. I just like to hear your opinion on things and tips you have, so I'm down for chatty vids or whatever you wanna make. I totally feel you on trying to make more money to pay off debt. I'm in the exact same boat, trying to pay off my student loans and car loan. Hope you're doing well!

Your content is so fresh and clean I would definitely be 100% supportive of sponsored videos. Your openness with this discussion is admirable and I think having that control over which companies and brands you work with will improve how your viewers see your channel. I know I absolutely despise the ad algorithm and have dealt with some triggering/upsetting ads so seeing a creator put their audience first is really nice. I would prefer the sponsored vids but I 100% want you to be paid for all of your hardwork so ads are okay in my book. Also ko-fi is a nice way to have a patreon without the rewards levels. It's for like tips and random donations and stuff.

I respect you so much for making this video. You are so honest and genuine. Everyone hates ads, but because of how much I like you and your content and because of this video, when I see an ad on your channel I will be like, "oh awesome, Janell is getting a kickback from this, and all it costs me is a minute of my time." Also, because I have total faith in your authenticity, I am completely confident that when you do take on a sponsorship, you will be honest about your assessment of the products. If sponsorship means that you can create more content, the situation is a total win-win for you and your viewers.

Keep doing your sponsorships that you feel comfortable doing. Also... FYI, everyone can control what gets played on ads on their channel. I believe it’s in settings and you can put key words that you want to avoid as well as company names etc.

I appreciate and admire your honesty and completely understand and encourage you to do what you have to do to continue to do what you love. My only note (which you were probably going to do anyway) is to be transparent about when something is sponsored. I find it most annoying when youtubers try (badly) to conceal sponsorships in their videos and yet they spend half the video talking about how fake “obsessed” they are with a product and never mention it’s a sponsorship.

I started writing a comment and then lost the page for some reason! Anyway...I understand your concern and frustration about the ads...especially when they don't always coincide with what you value. But many of us tend to tune out most youtube ads anyway...and I think the content you provide adds such value to this space, that it makes sense that you'd start generating some revenue for all of your hard work and efforts. I say, follow your gut- that inner voice inside of you...
