    This is a hell of a guy! When i was 13 yrs old, Rick was staying at a hotel In BG Ohio. A friend of mine had a father who knew rick, and he took me to meet him because I had a broken string on my guitar. Rick restrung my guitar for me and signed my guitar, we played hang on sloopy together, had a soda and I was on my way.

    One of the most "down to earth" humble guys you will ever know. He is also one "great guitar player as well!"

      I love the way he sounds like Johnny on certain lead solo parts.

    Rick Derringer gave me the bug and inspired me to get my first guitar 32 years ago when I was 13. All these years later, playing my guitars is one of life's joys. Thanks Rick!

    I saw him with Johnny Winter at the Fillmore East . The ticket was , I believe $ 3.50 ! Back then you saw the ad in a paper , which I picked up before work . I had to go to the Post Office to pickup mail . I would put Special Delivery postage from the company meter on an envelope and send it with a money order to get good seats . Different world . However , the music was great .

    My musically hip cousin Bob Smith took me to my first rock concert. We saw The McCoys at the Van Wert, Ohio fairgrounds and it made me a lifelong Rick Derringer fan. R.I.P. Bob.

      I come from Union City Indiana where the McCoys are from and the guys practiced and played a lot. I work in Ft Recovery and lived there as a kid. It’s a great small town.

    Back in '06, I finally visited NYC, using my life long desire to see Johnny, Edgar & Rick, together, in Red Bank, New Jersey...he was unbelievable, during his set, better than ever❗
    A prodigous great, the real McCoy! One of the rare rockers from his era, who could read notation...part of why Steely Dan hired him.

    They all went on to be Johnny Winter And, one of the baddest bands to be on a stage.

    Wow !! What fun to see! My band used to play some weekends at the YMCA in Dayton when the Rick Z combo was not playing there. They changed the name to Rick and the Raiders and then to the McCoys just before playing for my sisters prom. Thanks for sharing with us !!

    My late older brother played at the 'jam' session after Jimi Hendrix's funeral with, among others, Johnny Winter. About six years later, he recorded an album with Richard Gottehrer. That was a year after Rick Derringer wrote and recorded a song called-"I Was Just Another Punk"-with the Edgar Winter Group. Richard may have discovered my brother's band at a place called "CBGB" (the Bowery, NYC), or it may have been through a demo tape he heard. "CBGB" was the place that launch punk rock, though they were not a punk band. I was though; that is until I found Jesus. Lord, I didn't know Rick Derringer was also a Christian. I didn't know that until a few days ago. Amen.

    I saw Derringer in a bar in Ann Arbor MI in 1977, they were doing the DERRINGER LIVE set. Talk about a blistering gig! Some chick kept trying to touch RD's chest and he finally whacked her with his AXE. She was dazed, and two bouncers dragged her out and threw her into the street. Derringer never missed a note! Buy DERRINGER LIVE, one of the best live rock CD's out there - right up with the original Live at Leeds by The Who!

    People dismissed the McCoys as a pop or teenager band, but by the time they released their last 2 albums, 'Ball' & 'Infinite McCoys' the band were a true professional group with their songs showing signs of jazz, blues, psychedelic rock, etc. Next thing you knew, they became Johnny Winter's band minus the keyboard player. Wonder what ever happended to the keyboard player, he was pretty good himself...

    Wait - this guy, who created Johnny Winter And's arrangement and music, and stepped in and killed with Edgar's big band in, like, 2 weeks, good enough for a damn live album, this cat doesn't bring give-away guitar picks on the road with him, charges extra for a signed CD, and has to use (your town's) local rent-a-sound. What exactly was your anecdote supposed to reveal to me? That you haven't been to a show in 15 years?

    • @riceski
      @riceski 8 років тому

      Ok - I missed something here. It's known Rick stepped up Winters whole sound. Produced his records and did some great stuff of his own as well as played and sang on one of the top 20 songs of all time. Are you saying Rick is cheap or something? I know I got mixed up and you are talking about someone else - I mean who doesn't give away a few picks? OK help me - who is it?

    As a musician, Rick changed my life forever when I seen him live. He’s a phenomenal guitarist. If you doubt this, listen to Beyond The Universe ua-cam.com/video/kqZ1a_z0BWg/v-deo.html Now contrast that with the simplicity of Hang On Sloopy. The thing that got me was, despite a gap as wide a the Grand Canyon between these songs, he played both like he was the luckiest man in the world. 😎
