- This week I'm sewing a Tilly and the Buttons Joni dress, from the book Stretch and showing how I sew the twist and neckband. I hope you find it useful.
Please note, I am in no way affiliated with the pattern company, I just love the dress and enjoy sewing it. The book has excellent instructions, this vlog is to show you how I sew my version.
As always, please do give us a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't already.

Love the way that you take your time and don't rush so it is not overwhelming. Great for beginners. Thank you.
Great tutorial, totally demystifying what appeared to be a complicated bodice. I reckon you have 'sold' this lovely dress pattern to so many more of us who have been sitting on the fence. Your vlogs are really interesting and informative. Many thanks xx
Thanks so much! I’m so pleased it was helpful
Love this tutorial defo gonna give it a go now. Wouldn’t have without seeing this so thank u 😀
Thanks so much for doing this video Sheona. I think just a small notch at the centre front Top is what makes a difference to this neckline. It was also great to see how you use that notch to place the binding. The dress is gorgeous in that material. Thanks for sharing. It’s been a big help😻
This video is a game changer for the Joni dress. Thank you!!
So glad you found it helpful
I have been meaning to make the Joni dress for ages - I even have the fabric.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this fantastic, clear tutorial. Your dresses are beautiful....love the fabric too
You’re welcome. Happy Sewing!
Wish I watched this before I cut the front bodice notches out!! Thank you 😊 Really helpful x
Having just now, hot off the machine, made my first Joni thanks to your tutorial! I did use a 1.5cm seam allowance for the neckband where I’ve just seen you use 1cm... this would’ve worked better for me as I found it very fiddly to turn and topstitch the binding down. Thanks again for this wonderful video... and anyone who has been scared of this pattern -GO FOR IT! I’m so glad I did! Now cutting second one out!
This is so lovely to hear, I’m so glad you found it useful
Wonderful tutorial! Thanks Sheona.
Thank you, you’re very welcome ❤️
Great idea just to focus on the tricky area and use the time to show it in detail. This gave great suggestions as to how to handle it. Thank you!
Thank you, you’re very welcome
Hi thank you so much for your tutorial it was so helpful. X
Please do more of these! Loved it!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. You are a great teacher.
Oh thank you Eileen ❤️
I actually bought this exact fabric from you about 6 months ago and was very precious about it... now I know what I’m going to do with it! I hope I’ll have enough to squeeze out a top too!
Great minds!! Hope you love it!
Thank you Sheona. Awesome tutorial for the twist on the Joani dress. I was waiting for your video before I attempted this pattern. Thank you again. Val🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️
Wow, thank you so much. I have made 2 Joni and both have holes in the front which I have to readjust each time I wear. This is so much easier and very clear bring on my 3 rd Joni. Well done Shona.😁 Jill x
You’re very welcome! Happy sewing ❤️
You’re so welcome, I’m glad it has helped ❤️
Thank you Sheona! Very straight forward instructions for the twist. I haven’t got this pattern but, thanks to you, I’ll be getting one. Love the dresses you’ve shown!
Thank you ❤️
This was excellant, Sheona, after watching your recording, I feel much more confident to give this dress a try myself. Thanks!
Brilliant! Go for it!
I love this tutorial. It’s so helpful. I wouldn’t have had a clue to have done it like that. Thanks so much!
Been waiting for this vlog, thanks so much Shona. 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial Sheona, it’s clear that you enjoy teaching as you have explained how to do this so easily. I have made two and wasn’t happy with either neckline - although I do wear them. Great tip on adding the extra inch too 👍 I can’t wait to pull out my foliage canopy and get started on number three #3rdtimelucky 😂
Thank you! I do love teaching and I’m so glad you found it helpful. Your foliage canopy one will be stunning
Really helpful tutorial.
Glad it was useful!
Thank you so much for this video, I was able to make the dress nice and easy with your help 😁
Thank you Sheona- I had twist issues so I was eager for your tips and tricks. Glad to say I had a 'eureka ' moment and the single notch I think is the key. Also seeing you move the twist to and fro made me think I can still improve on my neckband twist alignment on my wip Joni. I now have the confidence to make more and thanks for the tip about adding an inch to bodice for fuller bust. 👍
Your welcome Dee, so glad it was helpful ❤️
So excited to watch this one! Love Joni but really irritated by the 'messy' neckline I got..thanks for recording. Will watch at leisure at the weekend 🤗
You’re welcome, hope it’s helpful!
Thankyou so much for this, only made one before as I couldn't understand the instructions and didn't like the finish. But now I'm planning on making so many more 💕
So pleased it’s helpful!
Thank you so much for this video it was exactly what I needed to be able to make this dress. I’ve had the pattern for ages but too worried about the binding and twist. Now off to the local shop to buy some fabric as I neeed to make it today! Thanks again 👍🙂👍
Fab, enjoy sewing it!
Thankyou a wonderful tutorial so very clear and concise xxx
Great tutorial. Now I understand and am going to make my first Joni.
Yay! ❤️
Great instructions for showing the twist particularly. So many people have mentioned problems. I’m not sure if I’m making this dress but would definitely refer to this vlog.
Thanks Ruth ❤️
Enjoyed watching your sew along. I hope you will do more sew alongs.
Thank you. I’ll have to think of some other patterns!
Thanks for this tutorial, really useful as I am struggling with the twist and the neck binding 😬
Did you stay stitch between the small circles at the top and bottom of the front bodice, then turn the seam allowance over as in the book? As I didn’t see them on your bodice. I think that’s where I have a huge hole at the twist! I’m guessing you skipped that part and just snipped one centre front notch? And you attached your neck binding starting there? Thanks x
Brilliant Sheona, you made it look so easy. Will definitely give this a go now.
Anything is easy when you know how! Have fun making yours ❤️
Thank you for this Sheona! I've been wanting to make this since I got the book but was too cowardly with the twist and all, and I love sewing tutorials😊❤
You’re welcome! Go for it!
Awesome tutorial, Sheona! XO 😘❤️
Thank you Rosy! ❤️
Brilliant! I had a gappy twist binding on my toile - know what to do for the real thing now, thanks for explaining it
You’re so welcome!
Great thanks. Really helpful. Have just bought the Stretch Book and am now looking forward to putting your tips into practice!
Thanks so much! I've had this pattern, but was nervous about the twist. Will trace off my pattern today.
Thank you. Loved it. Did you make a FBA for this pattern before cutting it out in fabric?
Thank you, very good video. I've been wanting to make that dress but was nervous. Now I think I can do it well.
Thank you. Go for it!
Thank you so much for doing this video. I have the Stretch book and haven't made a thing out of it yet. I liked this dress but thought it would be too difficult for me but now I think I might give it a go. X
You’re welcome. Yes give it a go! ❤️
I was in the exact same position as you until yesterday! Finally made one and thanks to this tutorial it’s turned out well! I have also not made any other patterns in the book yet... I hate tracing out! Go for it!
@@sewdarceydog7024 Sorted all my stash fabric out today and matched some to patterns for quite a few projects. Trying to use stash before buying more fabric. Once these are completed I will get some good quality jersey when ready to sew from Stretch. X
Thank you that was very helpful & clearly understood , I’m looking forward to making mine.😁
Great! Glad it was helpful
Fabulous Thankyou very much x
Very helpful. Thank you
Thank you! Love this 😍
Thank you! ❤️
Thank you! ❤❤❤❤
❤️
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for this!
This is so helpful!
I'm just starting out, and I wondered, is there a need for any seam tape along the neckline? Oh! and roughly how much fabric did you need?
Thank you so much for this. I have been thinking of making this as a top, but feeling a bit daunted. This is so helpful. I do have some cobra corsage jersey that I bought from you and was thinking of using it for this pattern, but maybe will try a less precious fabric for my first attempt. Maybe a busy one that might help disguise any small errors...
You’re welcome! Happy sewing!
Brilliant and clear tutorial 👍🏻 Your dress looks lower cut than others I’ve seen and I prefer that. Did you make any adjustments to lower the V?? thanks so much for doing this tutorial, I feel confident about tackling this pattern now x
No I don’t. For my shape I don’t need to. And thank you, glad it was helpful ❤️
Hi you done great tutorial on the Joni dress, it looks perfect on you, I will follow your tutorial hope it turns out as good as yours but could you tell me is it true to size I am a 40 bust so not sure if a 5 or 6 to do and is the jersey you use a 2 or 4 stretch, thank you for great tutorial
Fantastic tutorial, thank you. I’m doing a toile first- may I ask did you put elastic on the waist? Thank you
Very helpful awesome
Thank you ❤️
Great video thank you
Thank you! ❤️
Thanks so much, have been putting off sewing this dress. will have a go now. Susan Peach
So pleased to hear you’ll give it a go!
This is brilliant! What width/ length zigzag did you use for the binding topstitching? Thanks!!
Thanks! I think 2/2.5 but that can look different depending on machine model so definitely best to test on a scrap first
Hi Sheona, could I stitch the neck binding on before it’s twisted ? , I’ve not made this before so I’m just wondering. Xx
Thank you so much for this class. I really want to make a Joni dress! Where do I find the pattern?
It’s from the book Stretch by Tilly Walnes. And you’re very welcome!
Is it possible to add the neck binding before you do the twist (sewing one side of the top to the back first)?
No that wouldn’t work, I had thought of that but the twist needs to be constructed first
Any recommendations for making the neckline higher?
Did you use a straight stitch for attaching the neck binding? Or the same narrow zigzag as when you topstitched the binding down?
Straight stitch with the walking foot - that give it a lot more stretch
Hello, this dress would be too short a style for me at 75, how do I make it longer please? Is it possible with this particular style? thank you
Canni ask is the neck band cut on the bias ?
What pattern do I buy to make this?
Hi Sheona. Would you size for high bust if you have a large bust?
No because I don’t want to have to add a dart by doing an FBA. The jersey & shaping help it fit well and I do a narrow shoulder adjustment so it fits me better there ❤️
Where can the pattern be purchased?
It’s from the book Stretch by Tilly Walnes
where can I get the pattern in America?
It’s from the book Stretch by Tilly Walnes, pretty sure you can get it from Amazon in the US
What size does this pattern to to?
I think a UK 20 so US 24
💝💝💝👌😁😘
Hi Sheona, great tutorial😊. How did you choose which size to make? I have a large bust but small frame so if I choose my bust size will it be big at the shoulders, waist and hips? 😊
Claire abelle yes I wonder about narrow shoulders but full bust as I have this issue.😊
I picked for my full bust and do a slight narrow shoulder adjustment and it would then be easy to grade into a smaller size at the waist/hip. I think that’s an easier way than trying to do an FBA on this pattern piece
Thank you so much ☺️
Oh poop I had no interest whatsoever in making this dress until now, now it's all I can think of 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What settings do you use for a narrow zig zag? Love the video thanks!
Haha! Happy Sewing!
On the studio machines 2.5 wide but machine models vary so practice on a scrap first
