One of the dopest things about growing up throughout the 2000s is the full circle 75% of us went through. We grew up loving something like Toy Story, then from ages 12-16 we got into the hardcore edge and being pretentious about it. We also looked down on the innocent kiddy stuff. And then you become an adult and find the true hidden genius of Toy Story that was there all along.

@@Scarshadow666 That’s a great quote. I think because we’re the first generation that really grew up with The Internet, we had access to much more adult oriented content earlier in our development. That accelerated our interest into that kind of stuff and also overexposed us to the point that we can look back and laugh about it later as adults.

For all it's flaws, I still appreciate that Akame ga Kill's female antagonist is irredeemable. It gets a bit tiring when every single female villain is just 'misunderstood' or can be 'saved', meanwhile Esdeath is just "no, fuck the weak and you're not convincing me otherwise". She might be a terrible person but in terms of character archetype I found her refreshing :3

You haven’t seen Combattler V, have you? The main antagonist of that series, Empress Janela, is evil incarnate! She has her underlings take hostages, create monsters to destroy cities and shit(although that part is standard for Super Robot anime) and has no qualms about killing her said underlings and putting their brains in robots! I haven’t finished Akame Ga Kill in either form(eventually I will once I remember which volume of the manga I stopped at), but from what I’ve seen, I don’t think Esdeath is as evil as Janela.

Which is why it annoyed me when people said “X is the Game of Thrones of anime” purely because characters died suddenly and unexpectedly, as if that alone was enough to make a show great (GoT may have become popular through that, but that had a deeper meaning, and it was great for tons of other stuff as well). I remember Attack on Titan being given that treatment, and although that did turn out to be one of the best and most influential anime of the last decade (in other words, it did grow to be comparable to GoT for that reason), originally people only compared it to GoT because of stuff like Eren’s mom, Eren himself, and Levi’s squad.
On the flip side, I remember there being a battle royale anime coming out some years ago with characters based on the Chinese Zodiac, and people were losing their minds about this “new GoT of anime.” Well, as you can tell by me not even remembering its name, it wasn’t actually nowhere near as good, simply holding up a veneer of greatness by taking advantage of the perception by edgy teens that lots of unexpected death (without taking into account anything else) is incredibly good writing.

I honestly don't even know what qualifies as "generic shounen" now that I've been reading the manga for all the anime of my childhood and finding out how shit the anime adaptations were. The Bleach manga is pretty great, Naruto Shippuden is way better than I thought, One Piece is a masterpiece. The only shounen I can think of that I would say is shit in the original as well as the adaptation is Fairy Tail, and that's coming from someone who used to call FT a 10/10, right about the same time I was saying that about Akame Ga Kill and Elfen Lied. And yeah, liking the edgy generic stuff is fine as long as it doesn't colour an impressionable viewer's perspective on the world, like in Elfen Lied, the puppy scene was just so unrealistic and unnecessary. And unlike what Akame Ga Kill says not every politician is a r*pist, just 90% of them.

It's almost as if the writers realized that the characters had to be developed in order for their deaths to have impact, but then took the worst shortcut possible by just putting in 5 minutes of flashbacks to explain who the character was right before killing them.

    1. Your enemy is still human. Even though most of the enemies in Akame kill are basically written to be generic bad guy personality, it still shows a few other antagonists with nice backgrounds. For example they introduce us to a character that has a family and is quite normal, despite looking like he has a gas mask permanently plastered to his face.
    2. War does not care about it's victims. People are sad that almost every character throughout the show dies, but it is somewhat realistic. In war, no one can be 100% safe, just because their the good guys doesn't mean their going to get a happy ending.

That's what I loved about it, humanizing the enemy. When a character died for either side, they always cried for them and left the viewer confused on who exactly to root for. One of the best example of what war, truly is.

@@NCore_._ If I wanted realism, I would watch a ww2 documentary because Realism =/= Quality storytelling. Idc if Lubbock and Leone dying added the the realism, since it retracted from the story as a whole as their deaths are completely unnecessary and didn't feel like they accomplished anything. Sayo and Ieyasu's deaths gave him a reason to join Night Raid, Bulat's death strengthened Tatsumi's resolve to fight and gave him the imperial arms and Susanoo sacrificed himself to protect the others but what about everyone else that died? They died for no reason other than for sadness, shock factor and realism. While there may be nothing necessarily wrong with having a death in a series for no other reason than to be sad or for realism to increase the stakes, when you have a majority of the main cast die for no real reason, it gets repetitive and annoying quick as you can't get attached to anyone. The manga did it way better where both Mine and Tatsumi survived because in that case, the deaths that do happen are more emotionally impactful and feel less redundant than they do in the anime.
All of this is just my opinion though so if you think I'm wrong that's fine, I just think death for the sake of realism is a terrible idea for storytelling.

The death that made it realistic was Tatsumi's the most at least to me. A good, powerful protagonist died. But coz they spammed deaths so much earlier it rendered many of the deaths including his, less impactful. But Tatsumi dying was realistic as it showed that just coz you are the protagonist/mc doesn't mean you can't die or get a good ending always coz it definitely doesn't happen much in real life. If they hadn't made the mistake of killing just for the sake of killing earlier then his death would've been way more impactful. That's what I mean when I say the ending was realistic not the whole anime.
P.S. Also I was kinda frustrated with these damn tsunderes so Mine's death wasn't gonna have any impact to me anyway and is also one of the reason I like the anime ending. Ik its kind of f**ked up but ya.

A friend of mine said I'd love it since it's like Fairy Tail and I've dropped that show maybe 13 times all at roughly the same point and thought it was trash. I'm reading Akame ga Kill and I can see the charm of it; interesting world, nice view of the powers being items, and some other details that could make it great but it does have that edgy feel that only teenagers who find the nihilistic themes to be deep.

Akame ga Kill gets over hated. There, I said it. Like it's not amazing by any stretch, but I like a few of the characters enough to draw me in. I do think the Manga draws things put a bit, and it's a little insane that they had to introduce more characters because the main teams were getting killed off too quickly.
I also really respected that aside from 3 characters (the 3 most important ones anyways) plot armor wasn't a thing and they didn't try and justify their killings, instead owning up to it.
And uh, if you think this AgK is edgy, go read the Bakumatsu arc of Kenshin. Or really anything from the 90s.

I love Akame but that’s mostly for the manga, since that’s a completely separate ending on its own. I find that I enjoy the irredeemability most of their antagonists, as well as the protagonists in the case of Kurome. As for the deaths, yeah I’m 19 but I still find them deep.

For years I had a friend who will always say that ‘Fairy Tail is the best series ever.’ And I will kinda respond with “Oh, you mean the wannabe One Piece?” Or the ‘bootleg/knockoff One Piece’
I told him compared to One Piece, fairy tail is mediocre asf, and it’s fine if you think it’s great but you’re a frog in a well, if you think it’s the ‘greatest’. For months it was like this, but one day he started talking about one piece and how great it was. So I asked him if he was into OP now and if it’s better than FT. And he answered with, “Yes, it’s better.” He’s a huge OP fan now and I haven’t seen him talk about FT since then but I’m pretty sure he still likes it, it’s just not his number one anymore.

I remember being 11 when I first watched Akame Ga Kill and now I’m 14. The harem didn’t click with me, (basically I didn’t know there was a harem and I just assumed that him and Mine were just having an invisible arc ig? Was kinda stupid.) Lubbock was honestly my fav, I liked his death more in the manga though. Esdeath was always super compelling and I thought that Tatsumi was more than a bland anime harem protag, which he kinda is. He does have significant growth through the show and I do think that it works.
I do think some of the character designs look very fanservice-y, (lookin at you, Leone.) and there is a lot of juvenile humor that doesn’t really come across as “funny” anymore, like the overdone “you walked in on me changing, you PERVERT!” Trope that… oh GOD can we let that go please?! But yeah, besides them Killing Mine and Tatsumi I think if they really wanted to change up the ending a little bit they could’ve done it differently. Also Akame is the main character for only one episode and it’s disappointing. It used to be my favorite anime of all time, but I’d consider it still in my top 5.
So I’ll give it a good ol 8.5/10, and the 2nd OP and ED are Iconic.

Fairy tail with balls the kill off characters is a pretty accurate description of akame ga kill. Though they are both pretty bad shows. One of my many issues with fairy tail is that it never had the guts to kill off anybody at least not in the 100+ episodes I watched, while it was all too willing to play along the line and come up with some bs friendship reason for the characters to survive everytime therefore eliminating any stakes and tension. Akame ga kill somehow has the opposite issue were it tries to use killing off almost everybody as a substitute for any substance. They also tried to trick you into caring about the characters by showing some tragic flashback just before they died. But not only that make it painfully obvious when someone was about to die but it also somehow made me care even less about the characters. I might have enjoyed it if I found it at a younger age but at 18/19 it was pretty painful to watch.

Fairy tail isn't about deaths or being edgy.
It's literally about the bonds that the guilds help create between strangers who come from different places with different experiences. I personally thought it was beautiful how the Fairy tail guild was portrayed. It went beyond being a guild. It became a home and a family for all kind of people with all kind of pasts.
What you cans say is that it is cheesy

No the not the plot, themes, the concept, the vibe of Fairy tail and Akame Ga Kill aren't remotely alike. Fairy tail is about wizard gild who goes on quests, Similar RPG. The show feature dozens of wizards, over 40 wizzards alone in Fairytale the show quite goofy. Besides the dramatic parts. The feel of fairytale is like if mix comedy of looney toons with X-men and made it an anime. Akame ga kill is about guy who family got killed by the rich and he join a group of people trying over throw the corrupt rich, The show is very dark. The show aren't remotely alike in any form.
Also fairytale does kill off characters most of The magic council dies, ultear sacrifice her life, Zera
dies....just few examples. Hell even first 100 eps Grey master Ur dies, Lucy father dies and Simon the brother of Kagura and Erza friend dies. So that isn't correct either.
Joey admitted he didn't get past ep 60 of fairytale which means he know very little of the show, Fairytale is probably in my top 10 favorite Anime, and I literally hate Akame Ga Kill. The boi's here are literally just using fairy tail as meme for something they don't like, and just randomly comparing to it Akame ga kill in which they actually have nothing in common, but people are so dumb they talking it literal.

Exactly why I cant watch Dragan ball super. The power scaling is just obliterated and can never be salvaged. Not even by giving Vegeta his own things. Dragon ball z was great as a kid but these things are just too big for me to overlook now. Akame ga kill was the first anime I watched that didnt mind killing everyone so I enjoyed it.

Not to say I wasn't into some edgy shit when I was 16-17, but I almost kinda wish I discovered these shows while going through my own "mom it's not a phase" period.
I did give Akame a try some time ago, but dropped it around the halfway point. I think I couldn't get into anime when I was first really interested in doing so because the discourse was dominated by stuff 14 year old boys thought was cool. and I was a pretentious kid who saw Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex, Paranoia Agent, and Baccano and went "ah why can't more anime be ~elevated~ like this?"
fairly certain I would've bounced hard off Elfen Lied, Mirai Nikki, or Akame ga Kill.

The gore, the fun, the romance, the 'deres, the plot, the schemes. Like every anime since had has some of it. Idk, I'm satisfied with it. It's a great anime.

While I love fairy tail and I enjoyed Akame ga Kill the first time I saw it, I began to like it a lot less when I realized how many deviations the anime had to make from the manga because they caught up to the source material too quickly. But I think it also kinda had a sort of "game of thrones" element to it where after a certain episode you realized that just about none of the characters were safe from getting killed off and that made it kinda exciting even if it wasn't a very thought provoking show.
