can't believe how many times I've avoided a talk with the feds. I worked on a research project as a student and we needed to do silver plating for reflective surfaces, we weren't far from ordering like 5kg of reagent grade potassium cyanide from sigma for it except for the fact that the lab, as we found out, was legally part of a nearby school. Mind you, this didn't at all make it problematic to perform cyanide reactions with literal gallons of the stuff sitting in an undersized vent hood that was behind on its inspection and not rated for explosive gasses, the lack of preparedness of both the lab or the fire department to handle an entire office-sized building getting turned into a massive gas chamber, nah it was the recently found to be carcinogenic formaldehyde (15ml) we needed to use that went too far. I've also considered trying my hand at DIY supplement blends because they're overpriced as hell, I almost pulled the trigger on either a pill filling station or one of those powder pill presses, not once until now did I consider how fun it would've been to have the feds swab down our entire house.

Was looking into getting into wet plate photography. For that you need diethyl ether as a solvent. Went to local pharmacy and talked to one of the chemists. At first he was reaaaally hesitant when I asked them about whether they could sell me said chemical and you could almost see that thought bubble that said „This sounds sketchy af“. But then I explained my reasoning, the process that requires this type of solvent, the other substances involved and that I know the stuff is not the nicest chemical to work with etc. He then started relaxing and eventually said that he would be happy to sell me diethyl ether, because one, nobody would make that use case up on the spot, and two, he now believed that I knew what I was talking about.
Eventually I never went down that route because some of the chemicals are really expensive and even though I love photography, I am not willing to bankrupt myself over it (more than I already have 😂).

The uranium thing actually reminded me of a story I heard a while back. There was a high school kid, I think back in the 1980s, who was pretty much a savant; he sucked at dealing with people and most of his classes, but he was amazing at chemistry and engineering, and he managed to refine his own uranium in his backyard shed and set up a miniature nuclear reactor. Some time later, he ended up getting found out, and the police were called, and he actually got arrested and sent to prison because he made a nuclear reactor in his backyard while still in school. I need to look that up again, I can't remember his name.
EDIT his name was David Hahn, and I was wrong about a few things; he didn't actually complete his reactor. He was trying to build a breeder reactor, and he got pulled over by police for something else, and they called federal officers when he warned them that some of the items in his car were radioactive. He didn't get arrested, but was sent for psychological evaluation, and later joined the military before dying in 2016 to drugs and alcohol.

    • @slycooper1001
      @slycooper1001 9 місяців тому +4

      ahh yes the nuclear boyscout
he actually succeeded in building the breeder reactor but realised that he was actually creating plutonium and decided to disassemble it
he only got found out after he got pulled over
a bunch of hazmat agents cut apart the shed where he experimented with radioactive materials and they packed it all into plastic barrels and buried it in a location i don't quite remember
the reason i know this was a long time ago when i was really young
i thought that i could design a gamma ray blaster that could fire blasts of blue light like a deadly laser but later realised my idea would not work unless it was overly large that and if it got damaged in anyway it would kill you and anybody around you
basically it would work like a mechanical demon core blaster
      except smaller
then i went oh it would not travel like i thought and would not be effective at all
if i was born in a early time you would probably be talking about my nuclear blundergun along side david hahn
luckily i realised the dangers of my idea and stopped before i attempted to create a prototype

@@slycooper1001 the real shitty part is that he could have revolutionized nuclear energy, but instead he was treated like a criminal.

I was cloning gourmet mushrooms and all the info and techniques I was using was from psychedelic mushroom growing methods. Anyway, I needed isopropyl alcohol and had to get it from the pharmacy. I bought a few bottles and It was just way easier telling the pharmacist that I was sterilizing Ostridge egg incubators ( a lie ) than explaining I was growing mushrooms but not illegal mushrooms. As soon as I had a reason for my strange purchase he stopped being suspicious.

It's isopropyl alcohol, bro. That dude was either really bored or way too nosy. It's sold OTC in every walmart across the US.

The idea of Walter White quitting making meth because his cover up UA-cam channel is actually more lucrative made me laugh harder than in a long time

I had a buddy in high school, with a very high IQ. He got kicked out of university for making TNT in the cem lab. His mom owned a bunch of forest land, which she sold all the timber from. He had a couple of thousand stumps he wanted to remove, and decided that blowing them up was teh best way to remove stumps. He found a recipe for TNT in the “Anarchist’s Cook Book”. It didn’t seem safe to make in the kitchen sink. So, he went to the lab to make it under a hood with bettter control of the conditions. A Prof saw a kid he didn’t recognize, and decided to check it out. The guy was book smart, but a social idiot. He actually, told teh Prof the truth, and explained the step chemistry. Ten minutes later he was in cuffs, and in the process of being removed front the university.

I got checked up by the CIA and NSA, when I was webmaster of a computer security advisory organisation, because I described certain methods of conducting Internet attacks. I never actually made an attack. The relevant UK authorities (GCHQ) were totally uninterested, whish was interesting as I was then based in the UK!
