We filmed this cover of "Starman" on the Martian looking volcanic island that is Lanzarote during our trip there in January. It was the perfect setting. Every time we left the house it was impossible not to expect a UFO to take off behind one of those outlandish looking volcanoes.
We've always been fascinated with space and the question of what could be "out there", ever since we were little kids. Our dad always used to tell us a made-up ongoing bed-time story over several years. It was about two kids, Johnny and Clarissa, and their intergalactic friends, travelling through the universe, exploring new planets and meeting starmen on wild adventures.
Naturally, that planted a strong curiosity about everything outerspacey and we've loved “Starman” ever since we first heard it and were old enough to understand the English lyrics. It captures our feelings about the vast and mysterious universe spot on.
Needless to say, we loved working on this song!
Please let us know what you think of the new "Starman" video in the comments section on UA-cam or right here underneath this post. It's the first time we've done a Bowie cover and we're curious to hear everyone's thoughts.
If you want to know more about how we work behind the scenes, how videos like these are planned, set up, which challenges we overcome during filming and editing, how we as a family work together to achieve the final products you are able to enjoy on UA-cam and other places ...

Lots of love you all and stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa
The harmony on the voice melodies is insane.
Can only echo many of the comments already on here. These talented ladies never cease to produce masterpiece after masterpiece. So glad that I recently found them as my life is now richer. Keep up the great work ladies!
Thank you so much ☺️ Glad you found our music! Welcome!
@@MonaLisaTwins Thanks a lot for your kind comment.
Seen Bowie in the eighties in Toronto, Peter Frampton was his guitarist and he did this song as an encore, He is smiling down hearing this beautiful version. You girls never fail to blow my mind.
EVERYTHING you do (covers and originals) is incredible. I'm so glad I stumbled onto your videos a while back. You play, I smile. Thank you so much, and WELL DONE!
Bill Roberts Absolutely 🎼same here just a"recommended for you" so glad I subscribed 🎸🎼💕✌️
I SO AGREE with you. I'm so pleased I have discovered them, too.
What is it about their voices that makes them such a joy to hear?! (Rhetorical question. I don't think it can be answered really!)
@@fionaleathart8383 Twins with completely different voices. AMAZING:
Me too!
I'm a 911 operator and there's not enough love and happiness out there. You guys bring a smile to my heart during these trying days.
So this is how I do it. When I'm tired; when I need a pick me up; when life is just a bit too much I watch one of your videos. Or maybe two or three. Your music is beautiful. So many of the songs you sing are beautiful. And your joy in what you do, your joy in each other goes straight to my heart. Thank you. I joined your MLT club a few months ago because I really wanted to find a way to say thank you for all the joy you two have brought me. Maybe when time rolls along a bit you two will find yourselves sitting up there with Bowie's Starman, singing along with him while you wait for us lot down her to let all the joy into our hearts
The twins are beautiful, charming and talented. The version and interpretation of the music by the late Bowie is wonderful. One of the best clips I've seen in my life. Congratulations to all of you.
Agree with you. Have you seen "Morning Has Broken" ? Although I am a Beatles fan, the band with more covers by the Twins, I was paralyzed and catatonic while seeing that clip.
I was born and grew up in Hull and played in bands in the 60's and 70's I knew many fine musicians including Mick and Geoff from the Rats as they were before the Spiders and played most of these songs you girls do at one time or another and here I am 69 years old and picking up my guitar again! What an inspiration you are!
You've given me joy and hope the last 2 hideous years. Thank you. You young women shine.
Chills. As proven over and over again, the MonaLisa harmonies are heavenly. This is a gem done to perfection. Starman is a staple in our home and taking on Bowie is no small feat. Only Nirvana had done it right, until now. Thank you for your superb music! Lifts the spirit. ☮❤
When MLT does a cover, it’s almost always true to the original intent and feel of the song. It usually goes one better by using a more timeless arrangement, so dated instrumentation gets stripped out. That said, they can’t do anything about letting the children boogie. That’s on Bowie.
I saw Bowie at Winterland in San Francisco, October 28, 1972. Seeing and hearing you two wonderful musicians play this song brings back great memories of great friends. And a sad memory of a lost love. Thank You.
Nailed it! Absolutely nailed it! Enthousiastic without going bezirk, and taking it back at the end with slowing down. Love the video, too.
It’s not the sparkling talent.
It’s not the breathtaking vocals,
Nor the lovely arrangement.
It’s not those rich guitar tones.
It’s not the stunning visuals,
Or the joy you radiate.
It’s much, much more than just that.
You beautiful ladies you rock....... ❤ It's my first time.. and yes you rock
You know Ziggy Stardust was one of Davids best records and so under appreciated. I almost lost it listening to your version. I got it as a gift.
zIGGY iS my Fave ..
@@billybobb7252 When that album came out it was one of his absolute best well produced albums. It is a true classic.
The girls never disappoint doing covers of songs created by geniuses- this is another example of a great Bowie Song..
I get a kick every time I see one of your videos in my feed, it doesn't matter if its a cover or an original. I know before clicking that for the next week ill be listening to the song non-stop.
Who'd have thought it? To hear this cover is just awesome, totally unexpected. Their dad raised them right!
Gee whiz! A lovely song that cries out for the accoustic guitar justice delivered here. Beautifully filmed.
I cannot find words to praise these girls ...
Totally cosmic! Your voices and the production of this performance are out of this world.
WOW! As we'd say back in the day: Far Out! What a brilliant cover! I like the cover even better than the original. I love this video, too. Two gorgeous ladies sitting around in a setting that looks like the Moon, and singing "Starman!" I can imagine a group of people sitting around a campfire, gazing up at a beautiful night sky. The music is brilliant, the videography is brilliant, the setting is brilliant and the vocals are out of this world. Fantastic cover!
You bring back the THEN and show us that it still NOW. Tremendous.
You know, I've *almost* gotten used to your covers and songs being amazing...and yet I'm still amazed every time. This was *so* good.
You two always bring a fresh sound to the airwaves. Bowie would definitely approve of this. Your harmonies are unmatched. Thank you for the music!
That was outstanding. Bravo. I especially love that people of your generation are able to take this classic music and appreciate it, and then reflect it back in a fresh light!
Wonderful. Saw Bowie live in a club in Liverpool in 1972. He ended with a 1hr acoustic set when management turned off the power. Having done Ziggy he got his 12 string and played This Boy.
Lennon & Bowie would both be so proud and pleased with you arrangements.
Listening to you girls for the first while writing. Loving every minute and I've been a music lover 56 years. Love your covers and this one is Wonderful! Bless you.
BEAUTIFUL Only the one word is needed. This brought tears of melancholy and happiness at the same time. Video and audio production are "out of this world" great. Mona and Lisa are charming and so very, very talented. Stay groovy!!
Chills when chorus kicked in and drone pulls out.
You ladies are amazing. Love you!!!
Rock in Heaven David Bowie! Say hi to my young, new starman, Nicky.
This is hands down the best version of 'Starman' that I've ever heard ... including the original from Bowie!
Just listened to 'Africa', with the twins and Mike Masse. Once again ... the best version I've ever heard.
Lisa rocks a six string and the base in Africa was perfect. I can't help but be inspired.
Clearly, the Mona Lisa twins are something very special.
The twins have inspired me to start playing again!
You have no idea how happy that makes us :-)
Great! Keep doing it every day even if it's only 15 minutes when you first begin again. God bless you 😊👍🎶🎶
I haven't played for 2 years because of MS but I'm gonna start again also
Good luck!!!🤗🌟🌠
I would go as far to say that you two girls are even better than the originals you cover! Great harmony, impeccable playing, and you're more attractive than Ringo. (No offence) xx
Y'all are gonna have to toughen your fingertips up🤗😂✌️
This is such a special song. It means so much to so many. You’ve done it justice. Thank you.
No doubt this is still floating through the galaxy for David's enjoyment.
Great version of Starman. David Bowie would be proud. Very cool video also. Loved the setting. It worked well with the song.
When I saw Bowie doing Starman with Mick Ronson on TOTP in 72 as a ten year old it changed everything in three minutes rock n roll was totally altered forever
Another fantastic cover. I love how all your music always has the unmistakably MLT sound but you are able to change things up. Your vocals are out of this world.
What a beautiful song. David was a free spirit with a beautiful soul and you two honor him so well. Incredible video location too. So fitting.
Suenan estupendo!!! Son increíbles!!!
We need more Bowie in our lives, and we always need more Mona and Lisa! A beautiful rendition!
F the charts. youtube talent like this is where its at.
Bowie can be proud of you where he is now . Great Job.
this video and the cover.. are sublime!
You two never fail to impress me with your musicianship and entertainment value. This is a winner and a refreshing slant on this iconic song. Thank you for the music ladies. Best wishes.
I'm not the greatest David Bowie fan, but since I heard this cover, 'Starman' is one of my favourite songs!
Omg. Beautiful. I can't say anything else.
Please do a space oddity cover, this is brilliant
L
My new favorite version of this song!
Yet ANOTHER high quality cover from "our" Twins! And we MLT club members got to see it last week!
I'll bet David would have loved it! Papa Rudi needs to win some kind of cinematographer award too!
That's the most beautiful cover I've ever Heard
I am so glad that you have devoted your lives to making music. Wishing you the best.
How cool, here we go, here we go . . . loving this set up .. cinematic cinema, . ... . ........ Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Mona and Lisa! Absolutely brilliant! I love this song and you girls give a such a phenomenal performance. I've been following you for years now and you never disappoint! Excellent! 😊
When the Ziggy album came out I was 15. Most everybody had it. Great job girls! The location was the icing on the cake.
:)
Wtf just happen ? All of the sudden I’been blown away and in I’m in tears 😭
Such a class act.
Absolute stunning video! I wish I could conceive visuals like that and the music was...well, stunning. So far, this is my favorite video!
Well, there you have it. I really love how you put your own twist on this great classic. 👍
Wow. I am so pleased to have found this band. I can imagine the reception they must be getting with their live performance at The Cavern Club. I couldn't live further away unless I lived on the Moon (I'm in New Zealand) or I think I'd try very hard to hear them live. If the COVID-19 madness ever ends ladies, please think about touring 'down under'.
I like the way you stay true to the original tune while making it your own.
wow. i feel so emotional now. Such a beautiful version
The genius of Bowie + the genius of the MonaLisa Twins. In the Lanzarote lunar landscape. So often, I hear the playlist running in the background, out of sight, and here comes that distinct crunch of high tops on gravel. With enough impact to be in front ot that howling wind.
And after all those harmonies, that swell with the orchestra building, gives way to the simple pure melody, one line on a guitar, vocals but no lyrics, that resolves it. An amazing song. It has everything.
I grew up with that song. Loved David.'s music. Thanks for recreating it. You guys are awesome.
Wonderful dynamic.
Wow! Just sublime ladies. I remember when I first heard Bowie’s ‘Starman’ in the early 70s - I’ve been excited with the anticipation and as usual, I haven’t been disappointed with this very pleasant, if unexpected cover. That's a great bass line throughout (hats off to Rudolf, or Lisa) and it is enhanced by Mona's understated, gentle drumming and haunting harmonica. The music is the perfect backing for the twins to weave their magic with their vocals.
Thanks Howard!! The bass is Papa Rudi's magical doing :-)
@@MonaLisaTwins I think a tight rhythm section is essential to any good band and between Papa Rudi and Mona, I think we have perfection here. But we've come to expect that from MLT!
Just discovered your videos, and I have to say, they are all brilliant. Your taste of music, your singing, your harmonies. Everything is golden!
I love the spacious outdoor videos, so visually striking, beautifully produced ... and, of course, the music!
This is the best cover on this song
Just gets better..and better..I can see this in a major movie..fitting right in..
I must admit as much as I love your covers I’ve put off looking at this one being such a massive Bowie fan but girls you’ve done a great job
These girls are cool
You are amazing what ever you do you do well. I love it David Bowie will be rocking in heaven
The more I listen to you two, the more I want to hear from you. You’re addicting! I just pray that you’ll be able to keep up with my habit! 😉
Also.....Nice drone work! Nice colorization and lighting of focused areas..... Kudos to the production guys!!!!!!
The harmonizing on the chorus is superb.
A fan from Tucson Arizona! Loved , Love the Beatles and 60s music, Love the Mona Lisa Twins too! Not to easy to cover a Bowie song and maintain the brilliance yet you so easily do it.Why should any of us be surprised, you do it almost every time with the Beatles too! God Bless!
Just discovered you on UA-cam, now my mind is simply blown away!!!
Love it, the acoustic guitars, the twins harmony's, everything. X
Best use of a drone shot by a youtuber I've seen in a while. I didn't even mind the refocusing moment.
I'm a Bowie fan, mainly the beginning, with your space theme, and this is one of my favourite song. That's why I follow you two, you always bring back the same feeling of when I was young and I heard this, and other songs, for the first time. Thank you. With this scenario, if I were with you, after the song, I would chase UFO in the sky.
There is no end to their imagination for videos..another Gem from the Twins 👯♀️ from outer space..they truly are the StarWomen
These ladies are amazing and awesome. They're Fun, Love their voices and their choices of music. It's all good, Like them as much as Josh Turner, Kami Waltz, Reina del Cid, Toni Lindgren. Keep it up ladies
Woooooow. Goose bumps! What a wonderful tribute to David.
Absolutely wonderful. I didn't know what to expect when I'd heard you'd covered this song..... I love it!
I have shared this everywhere! What a surprise, and, as always, perfect!
Starman has always been one of my favorites and your cover is awesome, the beauty harmonies .. when both together star to sing second verse “then the loud sound did seem to fade,,,” I’ve got chills. Brilliant, on my view your best cover, congrats
Great song first time I heard it. Somehow I missed it all my life.
Better late than never :-) Thanks Andre!
Again an very original clip!!
