My 24 3500 HC Duramax has 11,000 miles on it and I tow a few days per week, so each tank of fuel has a mix of highway, towing and city driving. According to my Fuelly, my best MPG tracked was 18.5 which was zero towing. My weekly mix of towing and not towing, I get around 12.9 MPG on average.
For comparison, my 22 Ram 3500 Cumming 68rfe which was leveled on 35s, did about exactly the same, having tracked those numbers as well. Keep in mind the Ram was the same numbers as the chevy, but the ram was leveled on 35s. Stock it would have beaten the Chevy.
I tracked 951.655 gallons of fuel used in 16,809 miles in a 2013 2500 Duramax HD. Stock tune = 16.931 mpg, Calculated Industries race tune = 16.98 mpg, Hot Street tune = 17.73 mpg, Heavy tow tune (approximately 5 tons) 11.53 mpg. I got the best milage with the light tow tune, 18.053 mpg. My driving is 70% highway, 20% rural and the balance city. I always add diesel kleen during every fill up. For the most enjoyable driving experience I use the Hot Street tune exclusively now, unless towing, am approaching 200,000 thousand and running well, I purchased the truck brand new.
Congratulations, Dad bought a sweet truck, I'm glad to see he finally got it. It's funny how the other two are in a torque war while Chevrolet is saying 975 is enough, & in my opinion they're right. People have to remember what ever their truck is able to pull it also have to stop. Thanks for sharing the new purchase.
Wow, excellent fuel MPG for that kind of rig. I get 2-3 more MPG in a mid-size truck (V6). Diesel numbers and facts continue to impress. Love your channel and detailed videos real life situations. Props to you and your team!
18mpg is still very good for a 1 ton truck, especially one that's not even broken in yet, and I bet that wasn't all highway miles. Try that test with a very similar truck that's 10 years older.
Not bad, definitely expect it to get a little better once broken in. Have a stock 06 LBZ Duramax, I'd expect it to get a tick over 19 on a similar drive. Really curious about gas with the 10 speed - never thought I'd want a gasser hd, but that combo is appealing to me (simplicity, expect lower cost to own, and powerful enough for 11k pound trailer a few times a year).
I always find it funny people buy a 70-80 HD diesel truck and worry about fuel mileage. IMO if buying fuel is a concern you probably should not be buys one of these trucks in the first place. I have had one over 29 years and actually pull heavy loads with them and never once worried about fuel mileage as I need the truck to do what it does, fuel is just part of what it takes to get the work done.
I agree. If I'm spending all this money on a truck I don't really care about the fuel consumption. It's a big truck so of course I expect to spend a lot on gas. The difference between brands is minimal anyway so I wouldn't consider it a factor in my purchasing decision.
Many people do care about fuel economy, but of course it’s just one part of an overall consideration into running costs. No one wants something to eat into their bottom line more than they reasonably feel it should.
Money is a secondary consideration, but mileage and fuel capacity determine range, as you know, which is important to me in the vast emptiness of Nevada where fuel can be hard to find. Since I wanted a GM w a 36 gallon tank I chose the diesel to maximize range, could have easily used the gasser other than that.
I drove an 2024 HD 3500..Duramax..I have to admit..it does drive effortlessly, and very comfortable...needles to say, surprisingly comfortable..and now I have a truck payment...😮

I have the same 2024 3500 ltz l5p but in a short bed and best on the highway so far is 21.5 mpg. Around town though is a mileage killer, getting all that weight up and moving from stop signs and traffic lights can knock mileage down to 12 mpg
I just bought a 2024 3500 diesel dually Denali. My 2008 GMC dually was totalled in a recent accident. I use my truck to carry a very large and heavy truck camper.
I am watching son drive the 3500. He commented the smooth ride and being 3500. Just remember the springs are the same 2500-3500 until you load it and the extra leaves engage. That is when a "stiffer" ride might be noticable. if so only. I have 3500 now (just upgraded from 2500)
Just drove 900 miles ,Florida to Pennsylvania. Traveled Interstate 95 most of the way and the electronic mpg was 20. The truck is a 2024 Silverado 3500 High Country. We pulled the the 5th wheel down to Florida getting 11 mpg.. I am surprised how smooth it is even when empty. Love it on the highway.
Just curious on the weight and height of the fifth wheel. I get about 12 mpg pulling my mid profile 10,500# loaded with my 2019 last generation truck and Duramax. Pulling between 65-70mph
Still waiting to see how my 2024 3500 Silverado mileage shakes out. At 3500 miles on the clock, I'm still averaging less than 15 MPG with a mix of hills, city and highway. It will get better as she breaks in, I'm sure. My 2017 3500 HD that I traded managed almost 23 MPG on a road trip a few years back. Made it from Sacramento to Portland on a single tank of fuel. That clock was at about 50K miles.
Great video Steve. I know she's a big rig. Is dad going to allow this beautiful truck to be taken through the hydro lines and do the full Truck King test through Tracy's meadow etc?
You are right. I actually forgot how bad it was. I only remembered that the Sequoia did very poorly but forgot that it relocated the front bumper or part of the bumper. We definitely don’t want that to happen to the 3500. I am also not sure what is an easier phone call, telling Toyota or his dad that the truck needs a new bumper. 😃
Pretty impressive fuel economy. Hard to say value and $84,000 lol, BUT Chevrolet definitely has the best value in the HD segment. And also it’s worth mentioning you could spec an LT truck with leather buckets and get the same interior with most of the features for about $8-10,000 less money (US dollars). As far as the interior goes you’d be losing cooled seats, memory seats, power extend mirrors, HUD option and heated rear seats. On the exterior you’re only losing LED headlights and a little bit of chrome trim. Beautiful truck though and for the money vs what you get, the competition can’t touch it in price.
This newer version of the L5p is worse on mileage than previous years. Hopefully it will get better when it gets broken in. My 2021 duramax I would be at 21 easily with that drive. I also use everyday diesel hotshots fuel additive and amsoil for oil. They make a difference especially on less regens
I got the dually drive it with 7600 pound. Payload, and let me tell you it's like a log wagon. The slightest bumps make you feel like you're falling off to side of the earth
I live in Ontario too. It's very confusing when an American gallon is smaller than a Canadian gallon. Also even Canadians seem to give American MPG. That is why I prefer litres/100.
Big truck, that's not bad fuel consumption. Also surprised a 3500 truck can have a decent ride when unladen. I'm sure it'd ride better with 1000 lbs in the bed, but to not bounce around when empty is a feat, that drive footage looked pretty impressive.
It's certainly impressive. Still clearly more stiff than a crossover or half-ton pickup, but compared to even 10-15 years ago, HD trucks drive quite good now.
Not bad. I had 4 Rangers in a row. All 4x4s with 3 different engines 2.3, 3.0 and 2 with the 4 litre.. non of them got better than 20 mpg. My Colorado 2.8 litre diesel gets 29-32 depending on how heavy footed I get. So for the size and weight of that 3500 I think 18 is amazing…… Compared to a gas truck.
LOL. back in 2008 I bought junkyota tundra. That time I had just 22footer TT. Driving below 90km/h I was able to get 200-220km of range. LOL that was like 50l/100km
I also have a 2024LTZ Duramax, 3500 with a standard bed with 2300 miles on it. I also get 18 miles to the gallon. and like you, I am impressed how it drives and rides empty.
Great video! A little too early to be doing an accurate fuel economy test IMHO. Truck hasn’t even gone through a full tank of diesel….computer is likely still calibrating and fine tuning. Give it another try after 5000 km and see if there’s a difference.
Gents, I really enjoy your videos, thanks. Quick ideas of what I would like to see. 1500vs2500vs3500 comparison. What you are actually getting on average for most models. Towing differences between them how does a load feel back there. Yes “no problem for the 3500” but is it worth that for the gas mileage and suspension and overall size. Daily living with them, it’s all fun and games until you have to find parking. Maintenace cost differences/cost to own and operate. Let’s be honest most people aren’t stressing these trucks that often is that value or are cost so similar that you should just go bigger just in case. Are cabs roomier? Is it harder to steer/operate?
That truck wants weight to ride better; the hitch should help, but I recommend an extra couple hundred pounds of sand in the back when empty to improve the ride. That Desiel won’t even know it’s there, but the suspension will appreciate it along with your spine.
Nice truck. But I have a 2005 Dodge crewcab 4x4 3500 that U bought brand new I pulled a 39 1/2 toyhauler trailer to Settle and back to Salt Lake city I got 13.5 miles per gallon and get around 20 without, but I have a program I have ran since it only had 2,000 miles it has 78,000 now, I have a Cummins 5.9 cu in pushing 500 hp great truck.
Glad it doesn't have the dreaded DOD//AFM ! Does the 6.6 gas HD have AFM/DOD ? If not would by one ! Or use a delete programer ! Nice truck ! Gm out did themselfs on that truck !
6.6 gasser has none of the silly cylinder stuff. I have one with the 6 speed and it pulls my 5th wheel about 5k miles a year. It’s decent as a daily driver but I choose my motorcycle during the summer months for my commute
I like an interior to look good, but I also need it easy to clean. Jumping in and out of my truck on my ranch carries a ton of mud and debris. Cleaning these new fancy interiors is ridiculous. Why can't the manufacturer make something nice looking, but without all the tiny grooves?
It will get slightly better mileage when it breaks in (I have a 2024 Silverado 2500 Duramax with 3,700 miles on it) and the Duramax is emissions legal, unlike the Cummins... :)
If anyone thinks the fuel economy on this 3500 duramax longbed sucks, for perspective my 392 wrangler gets just under 15 mpg HIGHWAY and not even being driven hard.
Beautiful truck sir and great videos. Love you and your dad together! Wonder how it could handel a 3900 pound slide in camper like the excellent Canadian Northern Lite? My dream truck for sure.
I think GM puts a notice in the glove box w 750lbs deducted from the payload for the weight limit for a truck camper. A 3900 lb dry weight TC loaded to camp w the wifey, dog, and beer is in dually range. Honestly you'd be better off in a Ford SD 350 SRW which has a significant payload and fuel capacity advantage over GM. Could you make it work on a 3500 w add ons sure, do I prefer GM over Ford absolutely!
@@paulm9047 sir I researched that info. GM reduces total payload by 150 pounds per seat. So the five seat crew is reduced 750 pounds or in this trucks case we are at 3100 pounds after people. A Northern Lite 8 6 camper with all options has a dry weight of 2670 pounds. I added 800 pounds for wet weight and stuff. That puts me at 3470 pounds. Given that we are only two folks I think I will be fine. Ford dealer said they don't subtract for people. Having said all that you are right that for larger truck campers a dually provides more stability and safety.
Can we expect air suspension in the future HD trucks? PS I remember the leaf springs with two spring packs. The extra one was active only when a truck squatted under a heavy load. Is it still in use?
Beautiful Truck, I have a question please: I want to buy the 2500 duramax longbed, I only trailer a 5000 pound boat, I realize I dont need the 3500, however, it is nice to have the payload if you need it. I believe you said the ride is a little harder on pot holes, is it better to get the 3500, it is almost the same price, what is your opinion. Thank You, Robert
At 5,000 lb the 2500 is enough truck. 3500 is no less stiff. The difference is the leaf springs. If you want something softer you can go with the Ram that uses coil springs
It should get better as the engine breaks in. You should adjust your headrest, one day you'll be sorry you haven't. Adjust seating position means also ajusting headrest.
Yeah 2” lift with 37” ko2 on stock 4.10 gears. Tires are only 4lb per tire heavier over stock though. Its been a weird trip vs my 22’ mojave vs my previous 20’ sport s. Sport got 12-13L on 35”. Unsure why my Mojave is 3-4L consistently worse.
I have a question which maybe I’m just uninformed about. I know the EPA doesn’t require fuel mileage from vehicles with 10k + GVWRs, but the EPA is an American body. Does Canada just fall in line with the governmental requirements of another country and not mandate those same figures?
Congrats to your dad on his new purchase! No doubt the GM is more capable vs the Ram (3500 vs 2500, leaf suspension, more power) and will tow his trailer far better, but gotta say, for my needs I'd rather own his old Ram, that truck is still stunning.
i really dont know what you guys expect for fuell economy, you get that kind of truck for work ,hauling, towing etc you worry about fuel economy you dont buy something like that.
I can't say I've ever met anyone that uses Imperial MPG in Canada. In fact, many Canadian automakers got in trouble for advertising Imperial MPG numbers without disclosing that fact. So seems to me it would make things confusing. Plus, Miles Per Gallon is a flawed statistic anyways. It should always be "unit per distance," and never "distance per unit," to make things scale correctly.
That is the first thing I do as well, convert either US mpg to Imperial or the funky metric system to Imperial, I am from Alberta and yes I was part way through school before the metric system was shoved down our throats in Canada. My calculators I use even have the litres to US or Imperial conversion, doubt they make them anymore.
@@RobertKohut Same applies to temperature, weight, measurements etc. Im in cabinet business and have no clue what milimiters are LOL. However im good with kilometres and liters

6.6 gasser has none of the silly cylinder stuff.
I have one with the 6 speed and it pulls my 5th wheel about 5k miles a year. It’s decent as a daily driver but I choose my motorcycle during the summer months for my commute
Pretty efficient Truck. I drive 2022 Ford Transit 2.0 Diesel 130HP and it burns 9.6l/100km of fuel. Greetings
Beautiful Truck
that's actually my highway only fuel economy in my stock STi...
Winter diesel fuel is probably costing 1-2 mpg
I have a 2024 3500 duramax with reg bed and loaded LT pkg. With 750 miles on it, i did get 21.5 mpg on a road trip.
I would love to fuel economy while driving at actual American highway speeds of 75mph +. I appreciate the video.
It would drop 1-2MPG. Looks like sweet spot is around 65MPH. At least on my LML
For now. But I am sure a team of EPA investigators are working overtime.
my LML is NOT. LOL
I could be wrong, but you're using the backpressure from different pumps to calculate the gallons or litres used. Whatever/ Just seems random.
172" WB, great for towing and turns like the titanic. What's the spec say for turning radius? :)
No one spends $100,000 on a truck and gives a flip about MPG
Pretty amazing numbers, and that's with winter diesel. So you could expect a solid 20~21 mpg in the summer.
If anyone thinks the fuel economy on this 3500 duramax longbed sucks, for perspective my 392 wrangler gets just under 15 mpg HIGHWAY and not even being driven hard.
hi there! other than empty or tow MPG what about fully load that bed close to its GVWR? i think it would fall somewhere in between?
That front end is Massive Tall...Huge wheel base.. Massive Truck...its a nice truck Howard. Is it harder to drive with longer wheelbase?
just tougher to park.
That is good and when it gets more miles under it, it should get a little better.
my 24 chevy 3500 has 20L/100km combined city/highway
Better than my 2012 Nissan Frontier 👍
Would love to come and meet you in person I’m new to the truck world.
@@paulm9047 thanks sir
@@paulm9047 sir I researched that info. GM reduces total payload by 150 pounds per seat. So the five seat crew is reduced 750 pounds or in this trucks case we are at 3100 pounds after people. A Northern Lite 8 6 camper with all options has a dry weight of 2670 pounds. I added 800 pounds for wet weight and stuff. That puts me at 3470 pounds. Given that we are only two folks I think I will be fine. Ford dealer said they don't subtract for people. Having said all that you are right that for larger truck campers a dually provides more stability and safety.
@@slmjake Glad that it specs for you. I wasn't sure how they came to 750 lbs or why they deducted it so thanks for doing and posting the research.
Can we expect air suspension in the future HD trucks?
PS
I remember the leaf springs with two spring packs.
Your MPG will definitely improve once the engine is correctly broken into.
Are you guys gonna compare fuel efficiency vs the Cummins after the Duramax is broken in?
Yes
Duramax that's about what you can expect, but no mention of the 10 speed.
Right On H!! Crank up 1978 AC⚡ DC let there be Rock Glasgow n hammer the throttle!!! Right on Buddy!!
Nice truck….i would pay to get ride of the chrome
Beautiful truck. Your dad will be very happy with it. 🛻
I reallyb want to like that truck. I thought by now, the styling would grow on me. It just hasn't. I do like the new dash however.
Are rear end gears the same
My Chevy 1500 5.3 gets 14 mpg on daily driving 😅
Wait til it has 10k miles
That yellow is ethanol. Oh wait you Canadians don’t understand that green is good. Only need green handle in the states.
It should get better as the engine breaks in. You should adjust your headrest, one day you'll be sorry you haven't. Adjust seating position means also ajusting headrest.
Wow I expected better payload for a 1 ton. Maybe the gas hauls more since it's a much lighter engine.
Yes
FYI. 22,5 mpg canadian
Legitimately 5L/100km better than my Jeep Gladiator 3.6 gas motor. Currently 18.3L.
Dang I hope you have like a 4” lift while running 37’s or something to justify that kind of fuel economy.
@@betweenthepines4000 is the speedometer recalibrated for the increased tire diameter? If so, maybe you’re just having too much fun!
Yeah Tazer lite. Speedo is perfect.
Yeah fun doesnt help lol
i think those fuel numbers are good. lets see it tow my tractor haha
Where is the passengers Gitty Up?
Truck weighs 8450.
I have a question which maybe I’m just uninformed about. I know the EPA doesn’t require fuel mileage from vehicles with 10k + GVWRs, but the EPA is an American body. Does Canada just fall in line with the governmental requirements of another country and not mandate those same figures?
In this case the MNR and EPA follow the same guidelines as they apply to HD trucks
How much did Howard get for the Ram?
nothing. They still have it
Congrats to your dad on his new purchase!
21 MPG imperial!!!! @13/100k (Canadian viewers matter too) 🙂
I can't say I've ever met anyone that uses Imperial MPG in Canada.
@@TruckKing ...for us older Canadians then, that still say "it gets 20 miles per gallon" and generally have no idea what l/100km is.... LOL
@@RobertKohut Same applies to temperature, weight, measurements etc. Im in cabinet business and have no clue what milimiters are LOL. However im good with kilometres and liters
I bet you're happy with getting rid of that Ram with the recent EPA recalls
We still have the Ram 2500 actually. Waiting to see what happens with the buybacks/recalls right now.
You know the EPA recalls and any fix will give garbage mileage and added maintenance right?
@@OntarioBearHunterwhat is that based on?
@@ALMX5DP Real Life. Bear Hunter is 100% right!!!!!!
@@marcelo403polo2 I haven’t heard of anyone losing mileage, only having increased DEF usage. And I’m unclear what additional maintenance there will be.
