  • Following the frankly rubbish summer the sun came out in September and I managed to catch up with two separate MF 600 and International baler teams working on the same day just a few miles away from each other. On a Kuhn rake and also collecting bales was a MF 390 working alongside a MF 675 and IH 440/ Browns flat-8 sledge. The second team was a MF 698 with TB turbo that although the cab as many MF 600 models has seen better days (a novel piece of 2x1 working well as a window strut) sounded a treat as did the 60-year old McCormick B47 baler.
    Filmed in Cumbria September 2023.

VERY nice, David. Lovely to see the "old timers" hard at work doing what they were made for!

Thanks Alan. Yes still plenty of jobs throughout the year where it doesn’t need 200hp and all the gadgets! Cheers David

Ah David, now that sure brought back many memories, some good and some that I loathed! Making small bales was the norm for us back in the day and with 150 milk cows and followers, plus 90 sucklers, we needed a lot of hay over and above the silage. Always loved the companionship and fun of haymaking but loathed being on the diamond bale sledge. Once we got the accumulators and the flat 8 system oh it was a dream. Those 600 series with their rust coloured cabs were all the rage lol. They were good tractors if only they could have made better cab quality. As for the two balers, it just shows that if looked after how long you can keep them going for. Thank for another evenings entertainment.

Thank you Fraser. That would be a lot of hay crop back in the day with that many hungry mouths to feed, I bet you were pleased to acquire a flat8 system and take some of the back breaking work out of it though at least we got proper summers back then! Yes the Massey 600s downfall was definitely the cab although I do know of a farmer with an immaculate and original 698 without a spot of rust on it! Yes machines were built to last back then, still plenty of old International balers working up here in Cumbria and still doing a fine days work. Thanks again Fraser, I’ve almost exhausted my videos for this year (it’s getting dark time I finish work at 6 now) but I will be posting a handful of compilation ‘best of’ video’s over the coming months so hopefully you’ll enjoy them on the long winter evenings. Cheers, David.

Many thanks. It has been a difficult year, I can imagine it’s been the same in Ireland. That two weeks of sun in September certainly made a difference though like you I know of some silage especially in the fells still to harvest. Cheers, David.

Not rain again Des? We’ve seen plenty of it this year. Hopefully you got your wheat in the ground before it started and hopefully it’ll be nice and sunny when it comes to harvest. Cheers, Dave

Cheers Steve. Your right, not been much hay weather at all this year. Think the little rake was struggling to contain the rows as it was a very thick and bulky crop having been cut a couple of months later than it normally would have been! Cheers David

Cheers Paul. There’s still quite a few IH 440/430 balers still about here that get dragged out in the summer though like you that hasn’t been that great this year. JD balers an excellent machine, again used to be a few in Cumbria though haven’t seen one for a while! Wet here the last week so no better off in Cumbria than you in NI. Cheers David
