right, and most people don't realize, he was instrumental in the creation of the entire Death Metal genre when he was a teen playing guitar in the band Possessed.
This has always been one of my favourite Primus songs and definitely one of Les' absolute best, his playing is so damn bizarre but that's why he's still one of the rock bass GOATs
What a great break down 🔥 I love the fact that you went to the live version to see how Les played it. Also you actually sound like the music you are breaking down.
Larry comes from the classic thrash/death metal scene. The album Seven Churches, from his metal band Possessed is held in the same high regard as early Slayer and Metallica, amongst metalheads. I think some of those dissonant chords he plays in Primus are pulled directly from that genre.
Fun fact: It was difficult to move in the rubber suits so they filmed at half speed for the instruments and facial expressions and then sped it up in the edit. Adds to the surreal look of the clip.
That is pretty wild. I always wondered about the costumes and how they even did any of it. Wonder how they came p with the concept and how the people that had to make the costumes were thinking. Lol
As a guitarist, and a huge Primus fan, I've always been fascinated by Ler. What he plays isn't even remotely difficult, it's more "why the hell would anyone even think to play that, and why does it sound so awesome?". It's extremely clever playing that just adds to the madness that Les creates. Also, Herb is a massively underrated drummer as well.
Les is one of the great bassists, IMO. Song is a little different, but that's Primus. lol. If you are not already familiar, I suggest 2 bassists that I highly recommend you check out. Eugene from Jinjer, and Misa from Band Maid. For Jinjer , most start with the live session of "Pisces", if you want a newer song then go with "Someone's Daughter" For Band Maid, suggest "Hate?" (official live).
I think it's worth pointing out a lot earlier on in the analysis that claypool is also an extraordinary vocalist, & capable of holding down several rhythms at the same time- right hand, left hand & voice. have you watched the video for "jerry was a race-car driver" or "john the fisherman"?
Just seeing the shine on those cowboys brought back memories of begging to ride those toy horsies at the super market, but my wife would never give me the quarter!
Since the band couldn't move/play at regular speed in those suits, they had to record at slower timing/speed, and then speed it up to make it look 'natural'
Love Les Claypool, what a unique talent! Primus is one of those bands that wouldn't have worked if it wasn't 3 such superb musicians with a shared vision I remember showing this music video to my dad on MTV back in the day, he was very confused XD If you want some more fun bass stuff to explore, it's a very different style to Primus, but if you're up for some j-rock/j-funk take a look at Gacharic Spin, their bassist lists Les Claypool as a big influence and has released a series of slap bass instructional DVD's Their song MindSet has a lot of fun bass, and is a popular song to start with for people interested in checking them out, but most of their songs feature cool and interesting bass ideas
An amazing band I did not appreciate at the time. Claypool is a genius and Larry is way underrated this song is just incredible, I love the clip, it is creepy, weird and funny and stunningly clever
When I FIRST started playing bass in January, 2001, Les Claypool was my fucking guy! Him and Jaco were my earliest bass teachers/influences, and still are in 2024. Primus sucks!!!
You have a Bass Channel and haven't done any BAND-MAID? You have to do a video on MISA. Her name is ALL CAPS, preferably chanted 3 times, as in MISA MISA MISA!!!. Check out BAND-MAID's song 'Hate?' LIVE. It has a Guitar and Bass, Call & Response, "Battle" that must not be missed! They also have a collaboration with The Warning called 'SHOW THEM'.
Yours being a bass Centric Channel you should check out Misa from band maid. Maybe start with No God live. ua-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/v-deo.htmlsi=PUMPY_jr3LGRcT4E
It’s awesome to see Larry get his respect. He’s a super underrated guitarist
right, and most people don't realize, he was instrumental in the creation of the entire Death Metal genre when he was a teen playing guitar in the band Possessed.
Exactly. Most bass guys that react to this video never say anything about Larry's playing.
@@corrobgoing from Possessed to Primus still blows my mind.
Les Claypool is in a league of his own. I've never seen anyone play like he does. Primus was a perfect fit for the 90s. Mister Krinkle is wild, too.
Mister crinkle is my favorite song from Primus. Video is just ridiculous. Lol
Saw them live opening for Rush back in the day, what an epic concert!
Would be wild if a video surfaces of said concert. I wasn't aware of Primus until 1996 or so. Was lucky enough to see them with herb and brain.
Back in years? 91 , i saw rush with in Paris in 91
Saw them with Rush at Miami Arena , touring Roll the Bones ( Rush )
That’s a lot of bass epicness right there
Saw them a couple of years ago when they performed Rush's "Farewell to Kings" album in its entirety. Amazing show!
This has always been one of my favourite Primus songs and definitely one of Les' absolute best, his playing is so damn bizarre but that's why he's still one of the rock bass GOATs
Les is just amazing! The whole band is great!

Going from there where Tim left the band and Brian Brain got in and we got Shake Hands With Beef.... it somehow makes sense!! Love those days!!
Haha all the big bass beasts are doing Primus lately. I love it.
Les Claypool's Duo De Twang's version of this song is my favorite Les Claypool bass line. So funky
I was thinking that he would love to watch that version. Staying Alive is great too.
Fun Fact: The costumes were so cumbersome for this video that they played the song at 75% speed and sped the footage up to match the record version.
I believe the strike technique word you're looking for is "rasgueado" which comes from traditional flamenco guitar playing.

The rhythm has a Possum Kingdom kinda vibe. The song is part country, part psychedelic among other things. So trippy.
Love the toadies
Replicating the sound by ear is just as impressive! This dude is talented.
He definitely practiced a lot before he made this video.
Les is one of the great bassists, IMO. Song is a little different, but that's Primus. lol.

Pretty cool hearing your breakdown of this song considering I know nothing about bass
PRIMUS
"South Bound Pachyderm"
Since the band couldn't move/play at regular speed in those suits, they had to record at slower timing/speed, and then speed it up to make it look 'natural'
I love how it also makes their uncanny appearance carry over to their movements. Perfectly Primus.

Les Claypool`s bass play is friggin amazing. Primus is great :D
Thank you for the video, subscribed and liked :D
No, Primus suck!
Hell yea🤘🎸
When I FIRST started playing bass in January, 2001, Les Claypool was my fucking guy! Him and Jaco were my earliest bass teachers/influences, and still are in 2024. Primus sucks!!!
Check out "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" & "Tommy The Cat" the bass solos are ridiculous.
I tried to listen this song thousands of times, but only can hear The Devil Went Down to Georgia from The Charlie Daniels Band like I was brainwashed.
Have you listened to the primus cover of shine on you crazy diamond
I think Energizer batteries did a few ads with the incredibly creepy costumes. Primus thought they were hilarious.
Ler is the GOAT
next you should do the Les Claypool's Duo De Twang version of this song
This song was nominated for a Grammy in 1996 ... how young are you :p ???
They filmed the video much slower because of the rubber hands. They couldn't mime it at speed.
There is only ONE Primus!!!
Its a flamenco strum.

Claypool is a freak on that bass.
Les claypool, a primus’s legend
I don’t believe you have never seen this.
Kind of got that House of 1000 corpse vibe.
Les is an absolute anomaly... he hears things in his head, and makes them a reality.
Jerry was a race car driver
Believe it or not Les and Larry came from death metal. Or some variation.
well you know they say "les is more"
U said this is hard to find live???? They played it on letterman live in 1995 go look.
So this channel is copying the template of another. Literally one reactionary video at a time. Same artists, same songs, same dialogue.
Yours being a bass Centric Channel you should check out Misa from band maid. Maybe start with No God live.

If you listen closer you would have heard the lyrics 👍
