This must be such an interesting perspective for you David! Because most of the people would come to Beamish and learn through the "live history" but for you it's bringing back the most precious memories from the past 🥹 Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
That's so kind of you Andrew :) We really wanted to make sure to give you a perspective of what to REALLY expect - but needless to say, the whole day was packed with great experiences and we'd love to return to Beamish Musuem again as we didn't get to see/do/try everything 👀✌️
Get yourself there I swear you will not be disappointed the bakery and the chocolate shop take card as well as cash so do all the shops anyway except for the fairground .🏴
@@JayandKarolina which parts of the museum did you not get a chance to visit? well worth another trip to it to experience what you have missed out on, I live about 10 mins from the museum
I love beamish. My father in law still works there, you passed him when you came out of the mine. In his 70s and still a miner (kind of). love the video thank you for showing the world how lucky we are up here in the north east
NO WAY~ I went to Beamish during my last trip to the UK! It was such a fun, cool and interesting experience! It really felt like my family and I went 'back in time' to the good ol' simple days 😄❤👍
Thanks for sharing!! We felt exactly the same way :) The atmosphere was made by the people working there because they told very interesting stories! And obviously the idea of selling goods how them were made in the past - the rock buns and cooked in a coal fired range fish & chips were just incredible!!! ❤️ Have you managed to try them?
I have been a couple of times. They really have captured the essence of the past, it's like you have been a time traveller and warped into the past. Definitely would like to make another visit
Couldn’t agree more Chris :) What we found cool was the opportunity to have all the valuables conversations with the staff members who were sharing a lot of information in a very fun way 🎉
@@JayandKarolina Last time I went they just done the fish and chip shop, that as quite a few years back. Now they have the 1950s street with another fish and chip shop and the bakery. I most likely pay a visit next year. I am so glad places like this exist, as a child in the 1960s and 1970s we don't appreciate how lucky we are now, we had little choice back then and no fast food places like we have now. I remember only having BBC 1, 2 and ITV and mostly in black and white
Amazing behind the scenes tour!!! So blessed to have seen all of that extra stuff. The courtyard is stunning, as was the restaurant. Amazing place, amazing food too!
Glad you both enjoyed it! We were fascinated by every detail Phil has shared with us, as it was the first time we had slept in such a historically important place - and of course in a haunted castle! 👻🏰 We treated ourselves to a dinner in the castle's restaurant and honestly it was the best one we've had this year!!! Memories for a lifetime :)
@JayandKarolina that restaurant sure is amazing, as is the whole place. I made the mistake of saying "do you like Castles?" to my Wife lol Northumberland, where I'm from, is the most densely populated county with castles. We stayed in a beautiful Gaul in Morpeth, visited Warkworth, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castles in the same day then stayed in Lumley Castle the next night. We took in Newcastle and the Malmaison the day/night before. I love the energy you guys bring with each new adventure, really does add to the viewing pleasure. Safe travels guys 🙏❤️
Thank you both for your tours of the North East, we ( those who live and were born in the area ) are blessed in so many ways , the countryside, the history, the dialects and the people. The natives are on the whole friendly and welcoming . When you visit the Cathedral at Durham look out for the little shrine to the miners who passed in the areas coal mines, their ages and dates of the disaster that took them are a reminder of how lucky we are that we live in the 21st Century.
Absolutely love this place, need to revisit as they didnt have the bakery, fish and chip shop, chemist and 1950,s town when I was there. I could spend days looking around its a fantastic place to visit😊
Please do Susan! You must have been really ling time ago because they've just opened a 1900s town with another fish & chips shop, coffee house, cinema, police houses, toys shop, and many more 😍 We went there for the opening and still didn't have enough time throughout the day to go everywhere we wanted to! So the yearly pass really does make sense 👍
My family and I absolutely love Beamish ☺️ we visit at least 10 times each year and I always notice something different each time we go. The farm is my favourite area. I’ve been going since I was a child, now I take my own child and I really hope he continues the tradition and takes his children too hopefully at some point 😊
Oh, wow, that's so impressive!!! 10x within a year - it's a great tactic because each time visiting a different part will allow you to explore the whole of museum! Such a great family tradition! Keep on going 🧑🧑🧒🧒❤️
Glad you enjoyed it Stanisław! We are very grateful that we are able to film such experiences because we wish everyone had the opportunity to visit these places someday ❤️
Aww bless you 2 are Amazing your both so caring and explain everything in your videos my other half discovered you both 💗 and your such a joy to watch I've been suffering with depression since I lost my Dad in 2021 but I'm feeling feeling so much better watching your videos videos because alot of people can't get out it's so enjoyable to see other places so thanks for that ❤❤❤
Hi. I was so disappointed that you walked past the cinema twice. It is fantastic in the cinema and seeing the projection room. Also, you did not go into the school next to the church. That school was really really good. Well may be next time as there is so much to see. It is so difficult to see everything in a day. Thanks a lot for the visit. GarryUK
In the "toy hospital" on the top shelf right hand side thats my mams teddy bear, over 70 years old. My mam was a volunteer here for many years even when I was a kid i was a volunteer on a tricycle. Was great fun and many fond memories.
🥹🥹🥹 This is so sweet that you recognised it and actually it’s fantastic to know that all the things in the living museum have come there from the “real” past times! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
What a wonderful walk around of Beamish Museum - We've been so many times but it is so lovely to hear people's reactions to the place... sometimes I forget how lucky we are to live nearby. Also, I must have driven past Lumley Castle more times then I've had hot dinners, but I've never been inside. This is such as great review of the castle and it's beauty, history and ghosts.
Thank you so much Karon for your kind words :) We tried to be as authentic as possible because that's exactly what you want to see - the true face of what you can expect 🙌 We need to admit that staying overnight at the Lumley Castle was quite an experience, so definitely would recommend it to each and one of you! Phil really did a great job with the stories from the past, the history of the castle and of course the stories about Lily's ghost 👻🏰
Also tea bags were not invented until the late 60’s. Or early 70’s. Before that teapots, which were often dark brown pottery and had a knitted or quilted cover to keep tea warm, were used to make the tea with loose tea bought by the quarter lb bag. One teaspoon of loose tea per person and one extra teaspoon was added too. That was referred to as ‘one for the pot’. Made with water that was boiled to a rolling boil and before electric kettles people had kettles which were put on the gas ring to boil. Brew the made tea in the pot for five minutes and then add to tea cups to which a small amount of milk has already been added..
Hi jay and Karolina i have just watched your video on beamish open air museum and your lumley castle stay you have both done us proud an amazing video and so pleased you liked your time with us up north beamish is a fantastic place to visit as is lumley castle i think of myself as blessed to live very close to these places i have also visited lumley for grand afternoon tea with my family a few times its also a great experience thank you both again
Our pleasure Sandra! :) We have nothing to add - both places were simply amazing and if we manage to go back in the future we will definitely want to do everything we didn't the first time. Lumley Castle was a magical night and we would definitely like to do their Afternoon Tea experience 🧁🫖 and maybe even the Ghost Tour as Phil was really informative and funny and interesting about it all 👻
I'm so glad you guys enjoyed Beamish. It really is a jewel in the Crown of the North East. Those coal-powered fish & chips looked beautiful! The whole video took me back to my time there, one school visit when I was much younger and a visit with my family when our kids were a bit younger. My Wife and I also stayed in Lumley Castle when we first met, she wanted to see where I came from so I arranged a mini tour and ended up staying in the castle. Really is a beautiful place to explore. Thank you so much for taking me back in time! Hope Karolina slept well 👻👻👻👻❤😂😂😂
Thank you so much Chris - you've probably seen all of our insta stories already too but we really had a fantastic time in both the Beamish museum and the Lumley Caste! Jay was dreaming about them fish and chips, and I must admit, the taste was amazing! The coal-powered cooker really made a difference and we loved the fact that it did taste like they were preparing it in the past 😬🐠🍟 It's also incredible you stayed at the same castle, because for us it was truly an amazing experience! Phil's stories made me wake up several times during the night haha (that's how the human brain works 🧠😜), but I'm really grateful that we got to experience all of that! ❤️
Love Beamish! Definitely need more than 1 day to get round everything 😊 The lady gave you both some great recommendations for visiting Sunderland…. In the end 😝 Being in the Northeast you will hear alot of banter between people from Newcastle (Geordies) and people from Sunderland (Mackems). The divide / banter is steeped in history and isn’t just related to football. Newcastle has a beautiful city centre with the architecture. Sunderland hasn’t been a city as long as Newcastle and you won’t get the feeling of being in a city. (My opinion) We have beautiful sandy beaches - Roker and Seaburn. Great fish and chips on the seafront. My favourite is Minchella’s. Downey’s is award winning. Some of my family members favourite is Queens Cafe. Lots of great restaurants on the seafront. North is a great seafood restaurant that serves fresh oysters etc.. Sunderland glass centre - is at risk of closure. It’s free to visit and shows the history of glass making in Sunderland. If you are lucky you will time your visit to catch watching glass vases being blown. Next to the museum is St Peter's which was founded in AD 674-5. Head to the Winter Gardens and Sunderland museum in the city centre which are free to visit. The Winter Gardens is situated next to Mowbray park. In the park you will find statues which depict historic events from Sunderland. The Walrus statue is a nod to Lewis Carroll’s link to Sunderland and how Sunderland inspired some of his works, i.e, Alice in Wonderland. Penshaw monument is based on the style of the Temple of Hephaestus, in Athens. Steepish steps to the top with great 360 degree views of Sunderland (on a clear day which is rare 😂). Hylton Castle dates back to around 1400 and there are links to the first president of America, George Washington. Sunderland Empire theatre is beautiful and after an extension many years ago, now welcomes big west end shows. So many great things about Sunderland. The Northeast in general is a great place, steeped in history and local rivalry between the neighbouring towns and cities.
This is such an extensive comment! Thank you so much Naomi for sharing all the insights about the Sunderland :) We now feel obliged to visit this place in the near future!
Fantastic. I live in Durham and have been to Beamish many times, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, very informative and I discovered more from watching your video than I have from actually going there myself! Great stuff👍🏻😁
Brilliant vlog. The last time I was at Beamish, they were in a process building the 1950s town. Beamish goes back to childhood memories from school trips, and it's come on a long way since then. I will definitely look forward to visiting next summer.
What a beautiful place I love places like this so relaxing the colours in the place make you relax fantastic thank you both of you and all of the people there
@12:30 An odd thing to say, plenty of loose leaf available and consumed, I have it in my house, supermarket aisles full of different tea varieties, the deli/Tea room/hotels i visit serve loose leaf in a pot, with an infuser or tea strainer.
That wife dont go to sunderland why not? Best landmarks in the north east and best seafront in tbe north east. Some stuff at beamish is frm sunderland old trams, old house, old cinema
We were actually considering visiting Sunderland ourselves so got a bit confused haha. What would you recommend to do, see or eat there? :) It might be an interesting video for us to make in the future indeed!
@@JayandKarolina tbh the town centre is upside down at the min. After years and years of no investment or nothing happening has give sunderland a bad name. Currently alot of regeneration going on in the centre and new businesses opening up. A nice place to go is the sheepfolds stables near the football ground, lots of foodie places there and once the new bridge is built it will lead over into the centre where new bars and food outlets are springing up. The seafronts of roker and seaburn also are a nice place to go for a walk and have food/drink & anyone visiting sunderland has to go to penshaw monument, the views are mint and you can see the cheviot hills on scottish borders easily on a clear day
Sunderland’s coastline is one of the best in the country. Make sure you go on a sunny day though because it’s a different experience to that when it’s bad weather 😂
love this video Jay & karolina, I'm 70 and my partner, graham is 68, so took us back to years ago, especially in the electrical goods shop, old tv's etc, we remember them well lol x😊
This is amazing! We're glad we brought you all the best memories from your past Lynne and Graham! Your visit to Beamish would be quite nostalgic I bet! Thanks so much for watching 🥰
I used to live a mile away in Kip Hill and I, ashamed to say I have only been to Beamish Museum once even though I must have passed by a couple of hundred times. Fantastic place to visit and when your grandparents said something about the past that you could never imagine it’s there in Beamish.
It's an amazing place indeed but don't be ashamed - it sometimes can get super full, so it might be another reason why you skipped it! The good thing is that you can always come back and explore other parts - the amount of work they put into developing the museum is quite impressive! :)
Would need to pay a visit soon then! Any tips from a local expert? 😏 We love how you help us create the most authentic content possible, because despite research, sometimes we can't find or learn everything ourselves!
Well, if you're still looking for North Eastern experiences, I highly recommend Northumberland (and not just because I live up here). Alnwick, Alnmouth, Craster, Bamburgh, Warkworth, Felton Bridge to name but few towns/villages. Most of them accessible via the X15/X18 bus services out of Newcastle/Berwick. Morpeth is worth a look in on market days (Wed/Sat) and has some good cafes, albeit, not really much to do. I'm originally from Scarborough, which, as you've already visited, gets thumbs up from me.
I remember over 50 years ago, going to Beamish camping with the cub scouts. The museum then, was a white building with a penny farthing bicycle outside. I have never been since, and only live 6 miles from it. Got a change of heart now. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts David! It's really impressive how the museum has developed since then! Would definitely recommend you to visit it once again then :)
@@JayandKarolina sorry, after watching a documentary on Beamish, from it's start many years ago. The white building I referred to, was in fact Beamish hall, well i was only a youngster.
49 shillings 11 pence (d of denari, Latin). 20 shillings to the pound 12d to the shilling - just under £2.50. Toilet meant more than it does today, it was washing too. There was no indoor plumbing, maybe a cold kitchen tap if you were lucky.
Thanks for all the insights! Yes, it was very interesting to see a completely different perspective of life compared to what we have today! Sometimes we don't see what luxuries do we have until we learn more about the history :)
@14:12 Yes, 49 shillings not pounds, the person behind the counter didn’t explain pre decimal pricing, and the letter S usually wasn’t shown, with the format used it wasn’t necessary.
We could also feel the excitement since before entering the sweet's shop, we were speaking to all them kids who were so excited for getting their sweets 🥹🍬🍫 Such a nice way to make your and your children's visit to this museum more enjoyable!
Thanks David! I don't know why but some people don't picture Sunderland in the nicest way... What would be your recommendations for things to do, see and eat? We should definitely give it a try one day and see for ourselves :)
@@JayandKarolinaI think a lot of it has to do with football tbh 😂 - people from Newcastle tend too look down on Sunderland. I recommend the coast line and the 2 museums
Glad you enjoyed it! Well said Nigel :) Yes, it was very interesting to see a completely different perspective of life compared to the one we have today! And it definitely helps to realize how easy it is to forget that we live in much simpler times, which we often complicate ourselves... But that's another topic 😇
Thank you for sharing your videos this is beautiful and lovely because so much has been taken away but seeing this and what they’ve done is absolutely beautiful it’s not going back in time really isn’t it and those who do not know how London in England used to look like well this is what it is it is just a shame that things can’t stay the same but it’s absolutely beautiful thank you for sharing
Stayed at Lumley Castle a few times including for my 40 years service award. Every year the company I worked for would the 25 year, 40 year and occasional 50 year awards ! Nice that you were treat as royalty on your visit !
This is amazing Paul 😍🙏🏼 We can imagine that work events must be so much fun at the castle! We were so happy that Phil gave us a tour on arrival because the stories of Lumley Castle and the surrounding were creating such a great atmosphere! Hope to inspire more people to visit this place because it’s so much worth it ❤️
Hi Jay and Karolina I think I enjoyed this most of all the videos you have done, and I’m only halfway through. Being an older gentleman I can remember a lot of the things on display, especially those from the 1950’s when I was a child. I did go to Beamish, probably 20 years or so ago now, and I had a great time. As you said Jay there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Glad you've been enjoying watching our videos John! It's truly great to hear that you're willing to see the world through our eyes and can reflect on your past experiences too! ❤️ Beamish Museum has changed a lot over the past couple of years so it might be interesting for you to check it out this time too! :)
Yes, it was definitely such a special experience for us! It's amazing that it really was possible to sort of "teleport" to the bygone era! And the whole atmosphere was created by the people working there, because they told very interesting stories! No doubt it will be so magical around Christmas time 🎄✨❄️
So Scotland tour ended and back to England? I love the whole Beamish living museum and the haunted tour of the castle. Always wanting to do at least one haunting castle tour in the UK but my partner isnt into this paranormal stuff haha.
We have one more video from the UK which was Glasgow but we can’t upload that until later next week so we thought we’d upload this one as people have been waiting for it haha - we’re flying to China tomorrow ;)
Great to have a video of this length, and this must be the most comprenshive Beamish video out there! It's been many years since I've been there and it looks like they've added quite a lot. Looking forward to Glasgow and China now!
Glad it was helpful! And a good observation because they are adding something all the time - this year they opened an entire part of the 1950s Township where you can find a second Fish & Chips shop, old Coffee Shop, historic Milk Bar, Policemen's Houses, Toys Shop and many more! Little spoiler: we've just arrived in Manchester from where we're flying to CHINA tomorrow!!! Can't wait 😍🇨🇳
I remember my nan and grandad telling me that they were the first ones in the street to have a colour TV and when they were watching it the people in the street where stood looking through the window 😂 lol 🏴
You need to go to Blists Hill Victorian town in Iron Bridge. It used to be amazing and you need to visit St Fagans in Cardiff which is a collection of old buildings rebuilt stone for stone.
What a great video, it’s wonderful to see it through your eyes. I live in the North East and have been many times but you can always find something new. If you go allow a couple of days to see it all. It is busy in the summer but there are more staff and more of an atmosphere. ❤
Our pleasure Maureen! We immediately felt very good when we visited the North East regions of England - the people are very friendly and even if the English weather takes its toll, the regions are still beautiful! :)
The fish & Chips there are really the best i have had in my life. bit expensive but well worth it. The beef dripping and the coal fire does make a difference to the taste.
The other houses in the new 50's section actually tell the story of some of the Polish soldiers who stayed in the UK after WWII. My Grandad was one of them and the Museum actually researched a lot of his history, from training for pitwork up in Scotland to the various pits he worked in, right up until he met my Grandmother in Chester-le-Street. They have photos of them together, including one of their wedding photos, my grandad in uniform and a one of my Mam and her sisters sitting on his motorbike, along with a copy of his various documents and certificates that my Grandmother won. Its wonderful the information that Beamish was able to find and filled in a lot of gaps that our family had about his journey.
Really enjoyed your video, thank you. You should visit Morpeth, it has a beautiful park, promenade and a enjoy a little row along the river. From there do the coastal route, Bamborough, Warkworth have lovely castles and Alnwick Castle and gardens with its water displays and Harry Potter theme. Also it has a lovely tree house restaurant. Even more lovely villages near by too many to mention. (In the summer of course 😉)
the pink soap may be carbolic soap which was one of the most used at the time and helped with laundry and personal cleanliness the strange smell is probably phenol i worked in a plant that refined phenol and had a strong smell like the soap.
We're so glad you enjoyed it! You definitely should! :) Beamish is a very special place, so anyone who wants to teleport to a bygone era - have to go there!
Excellent tour of Beamish from you guys! Also, big up to the staff for their helpful explanations - especially the tv guy comparing 1950's prices todays! Great fun all round! 👍
Great point! We really enjoyed all the conversations with these people because they really gave us perspectives of times gone by! Thank you so much for watching :)
One of my first jobs is the 80's was refurbishing those Hoover Juniors and Hoover Seniors! I use to strip out every part and clean them. Then replace any worn out parts and put them back together to then be sold in the shop I worked in. They were so popular even in the 80's.
Great video. 1st I've seen of yours so you got a new subscriber. I'm from Cardiff and we have St. Fagans open air museum and it's a great day out. Haven't looked at your uploads yet so my bad if you've already visited. I like TV shop guy too. He Knew his role and I bet you could have a good few pints with him. I'd have a beer with him anyday.
The best value for money in the northeast from someone who lives up north ❤❤ lovely place, davies fish and chips cooked in dripping just like ya nanna cooked in good old days ❤
hi Both thanks so much for sharing the vidio about bremish tram and village, we realy enjoyed watching it very enjoyable , and both me and my wife cant travel far, so found it good
The best video I've seen of Beamish. Its such a great place to visit. Every time we visit there a things we have missed the previous time. So much to see and do. Great that they have a year ticket isn't it not just a one time visit price. 😊 great video you guys.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thank you so much for your kind words 🥹 We’ll definitely be back because there’s so much to see, do and try so it would be sad not to visit Beamish again without exploring more of what is has to offer!
its is ironic that you went to the chip shop after speaking to the lady that said you should visit Berwick as the tiles in the chip shop originated in a fish and shop in berwick and where moved to beamish after a refurbishment of the berwick shop.
To do beamish properly it needs to be done over multiple days so you can spend a good amount of time in each area! They even have events on sometimes like the classic cars or tractors. So glad I live a 10min drive from Beamish as it allows me to easily spread my visits out.
True that! You're so lucky Matthew! We tried our best but it's impossible to check out everything on your first visit 😬😬 But it actually feels great that you can come back and visit the points you've never seen before!
Fantastic vlog guys. My childhood, beef dripping from the butcher was used to cook chips. The fat smelt rank on 1st fry (it didn't affect taste). There are so many issues I could talk about this vlog! Great tactic Karolina, let the man go down the pit & earn the crust, whilst you bask in the sun! LOL! GIVE WOMEN THE VOTE!, & lots of chocs & love!!
Hahaha I love your comment 😍 - I really wanted to see the mine myself but well, the choice of shoes wasn't appropriate... Nevertheless, all the delicacies tasted great to us and we will definitely remember a lot from the history of the people who work there in the Beamish Museum - it was a really amazing surprise when we realised that through these conversations we can learn a lot about the past of North-East England :)!
I live 6miles from Beamish. It is in County near Chester -le -St and is in County Durham, hence is much more neater Durham than Newcastle. Loved the video. Hope you thoroughly enjoyed your visit. Keep up the good work! ❤
Very cool! You're probably a frequent visitor, aren't you Diane? 😍 We will continue our travels in the UK, but for now it's time for Asia - we flew to Beijing 2 days ago, so get ready for some videos from China soon :)
I recently watched a UA-cam video about the penny Licks kids used to buy in victorian day ice cream but never washed the little jars out kids became ill and some died regards to the police houses they where around in the 60s and 70s
That's interesting haha thanks for sharing! We found it extremely interesting that a lady from the staff members was able to tell us so precisely what life was like for the families of police officers 👀
Yes, we can totally agree with you Lynne - it's a fantastic place to learn a lot about the past! And it's so interesting that you can also see some connections with today's times :)
All the old things was the best things and that tall unite and the other one on the wall my mum used to have both blue and white we use to pull the cupboard door down on the tall unit and make sandwiches on it when we was small this brings back a lot of memories to me thank you both of you the spinning tops too. This place is really good thank you for taking us a long.
We're so glad to hear that! We had such a great time ourselves filming this Beamish vlog and staying overnight at Lumley Castle 😍 Sometimes it really doesn't seem real what we are doing!
Our pleasure! We really loved our day out at the Beamish Museum and would definitely advise you to try them fish & chips because the taste was absolutely awesome! 🐠🍟
Loved the vids, keep up the good work. If you like what you've seen up northeast try northumberland coastline, quaint little fishing villages, castles especially bamburgh, beautiful rugged coastline ,with beautiful beaches ,oldest golf club in England, holy island ,Farne islands .I qaurantee you will love it
Lovely video of beamish I live just down the road so great fan of the place you are both such a nice couple so friendly with the children enjoy the UK the northeast is a great place to live
ofc theres loose leaf tea today lol. Its much better quality than bagged tea as well, due to it being able to expand freely and also not being chopped into tiny pieces
Been to Beamish about 20 times living in Middlesbrough it is not that far ... If you want to know what it was like in your nan and Grandad's day this is the best place to come I remember taking my nan , who when we boarded a tram , said I have never been on one of these since I was 18 and I was 18 then that was 42 years ago, lol . new subscriber 😂🏴
That’s such an interesting perspective Jack! We have no doubt that you really enjoy this living museum as you have been so many times. Now here's the question: which part is the best for you?! 😍
Excellent video, I live a few miles away from Beamish and make the most of the annual ticket, its an amazing day out, come back at Christmas, its magical Also been to Lumley Castle many times, once went to a Henry the 8th banquet, got dressed up in a Tudor dress and ate chicken legs with my hands, amazing
Wow, that sounds very cool Helen! This must have been such an authentic and unusual experience during the castle's banquet 🤩🐔🍗 Also, would need to definitely visit Beamish over Christmas time when we come on our second visit!
Don't worry - when we get there we'll judge Sunderland for ourselves, because we've heard a lot of really positive opinions? Is there anything we definitely shouldn't miss??? :)
@@JayandKarolina Roker pier and downeys fish n chips shop at the entrance of the pier.. also seaburn beach best in north east in my opinion.. plenty places to eat and drink in seaburn.
Couldn't agree more! Such a unique concept and we loved all the conversations with the staff members - the best transfer of knowledge and feeling as if you were actually in those times. Not to mention the food and delicacies also served in the old style! CLASS! 😍😋
Being in my 80s and a Geordie, Beamish is just my childhood re-created. Whey man it's champion!
This must be such an interesting perspective for you David! Because most of the people would come to Beamish and learn through the "live history" but for you it's bringing back the most precious memories from the past 🥹 Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
@JayandKarolina Hello, David from Teesside bora 👍🏴
Best tour of Beamish I've seen. I've never been, but even more enthusiastic to do so now.

Get yourself there I swear you will not be disappointed the bakery and the chocolate shop take card as well as cash so do all the shops anyway except for the fairground .🏴
The whole museum village was taken from different parts of the North East and rebuilt brick by brick.
I’ve never experienced anything like that in England and it really made us feel like we went back in time and go to experience how life was!
Thats right remember a tv program when they build the fish and chip shop, brick were numbered

I most likely pay a visit next year. I am so glad places like this exist, as a child in the 1960s and 1970s we don't appreciate how lucky we are now, we had little choice back then and no fast food places like we have now. I remember only having BBC 1, 2 and ITV and mostly in black and white
Great tour especially Lumley Castle which i've never been too, it was very nice of them to give you a tour round it 👍
Amazing behind the scenes tour!!!
We treated ourselves to a dinner in the castle's restaurant and honestly it was the best one we've had this year!!! Memories for a lifetime :)
@JayandKarolina that restaurant sure is amazing, as is the whole place. I made the mistake of saying "do you like Castles?" to my Wife lol
Northumberland, where I'm from, is the most densely populated county with castles.
The escape room at Lumley is excellent
The tart you ate my mum made for us as kids every Sunday and we called it a custard tart topped with decicated coconut
You must have been really ling time ago because they've just opened a 1900s town with another fish & chips shop, coffee house, cinema, police houses, toys shop, and many more 😍
We went there for the opening and still didn't have enough time throughout the day to go everywhere we wanted to! So the yearly pass really does make sense 👍
@@JayandKarolina I have missed out on a lot then. Will definitely go back but when the kids are at school and it's less busy !
@@JayandKarolina 1950s town and buildings...... make up the new development.....
Thank you for this magic tour of Beamish and Lumley Castle, what an absolute delight.
Glad you enjoyed it Stanisław! We are very grateful that we are able to film such experiences because we wish everyone had the opportunity to visit these places someday ❤️
Aww bless you 2 are Amazing your both so caring and explain everything in your videos my other half discovered you both 💗 and your such a joy to watch I've been suffering with depression since I lost my Dad in 2021 but I'm feeling feeling so much better watching your videos videos because alot of people can't get out it's so enjoyable to see other places so thanks for that ❤❤❤
You're so kind Julie 🥹 We're so glad to hear that and we hope that you'll enjoy our Asia videos just as much ❤️ Take care! K&J
I have been watching your streams for the last two weeks and I love them. You r such a good presenter Jay. You should be on television !!!
Wow, thank you for your kind words Steven 😍 I hope someday a career as a UA-camrs will lead me to something even more exciting haha
Thank you so much Karon for your kind words :) We tried to be as authentic as possible because that's exactly what you want to see - the true face of what you can expect 🙌
We need to admit that staying overnight at the Lumley Castle was quite an experience, so definitely would recommend it to each and one of you!
Lumley Castle was a magical night and we would definitely like to do their Afternoon Tea experience 🧁🫖 and maybe even the Ghost Tour as Phil was really informative and funny and interesting about it all 👻
Grew up in Sunderland went here for school trips and family trips one of my favourite places growing up
I'm so glad you guys enjoyed Beamish.
Hope Karolina slept well 👻👻👻👻❤😂😂😂
I went on a school trip too, so I'm not sure going in term time would help! I suppose they're more likely to be in a big group that's easier to avoid.
Thank you so much Chris - you've probably seen all of our insta stories already too but we really had a fantastic time in both the Beamish museum and the Lumley Caste!
Jay was dreaming about them fish and chips, and I must admit, the taste was amazing! The coal-powered cooker really made a difference and we loved the fact that it did taste like they were preparing it in the past 😬🐠🍟
It's also incredible you stayed at the same castle, because for us it was truly an amazing experience! Phil's stories made me wake up several times during the night haha (that's how the human brain works 🧠😜), but I'm really grateful that we got to experience all of that! ❤️
Love Beamish! Definitely need more than 1 day to get round everything 😊
The lady gave you both some great recommendations for visiting Sunderland….
(My opinion)
We have beautiful sandy beaches - Roker and Seaburn.
The bloke from A Reece electrical was super interesting to listen to about the broadcasting and early tv days, top bloke. The more you know.
What a beautiful place I love places like this so relaxing the colours in the place make you relax fantastic thank you both of you and all of the people there
The chap in the 50's electric store was such a joy, so knowledgeable and interesting, I can't wait to visit!
@12:30 An odd thing to say, plenty of loose leaf available and consumed, I have it in my house, supermarket aisles full of different tea varieties, the deli/Tea room/hotels i visit serve loose leaf in a pot, with an infuser or tea strainer.
This is so kind of you Julie 🥹 We're so glad to hear that!!! Hope you'll enjoy our Asia adventures just as much ❤️ Take care, K&J
We've actually heard so many great things about Sunderland so would need to definitely experience it on our own soon! :)
love this video Jay & karolina, I'm 70 and my partner, graham is 68, so took us back to years ago, especially in the electrical goods shop, old tv's etc, we remember them well lol x😊
This is amazing! We're glad we brought you all the best memories from your past Lynne and Graham! Your visit to Beamish would be quite nostalgic I bet! Thanks so much for watching 🥰
I know that man from the electrical shop. He runs a hedgehog rescue in Durham, I fostered some of his hedgehogs.
We had such a great chat with him :) It's great to know he's involved into something outside of him Beamish role!
Sunderland class place to go. Beach us best in north east. Love beamish
Would need to pay a visit soon then! Any tips from a local expert? 😏 We love how you help us create the most authentic content possible, because despite research, sometimes we can't find or learn everything ourselves!
Dear Mackem, The best beaches are in Northumberland! Beadnell, Bamburgh, Embleton, they beta Roker by Miles
OmG I HAVE BEEN WAITING for the videoooooo❤❤❤❤❤
You’ve been waiting patiently! Enjoy :)
Awww, we love getting recommendations from you guys! Thank you so much 😍 We really liked Scarborough and find it very unique too!
I absolutely LOVED your film so much....I really want to visit this place now...Well done and thanks for sharing this excellent film...
Thank you so much Mike! You definitely should visit Beamish soon then 😍😍
I remember over 50 years ago, going to Beamish camping with the cub scouts.
@14:12 Yes, 49 shillings not pounds, the person behind the counter didn’t explain pre decimal pricing,
and the letter S usually wasn’t shown, with the format used it wasn’t necessary.
Nothing better as a kid than watching them make the sweets and getting to try them afterwards! Love Beamish it's so unique
We could also feel the excitement since before entering the sweet's shop, we were speaking to all them kids who were so excited for getting their sweets 🥹🍬🍫 Such a nice way to make your and your children's visit to this museum more enjoyable!
Visit Sunderland..plenty of good things to see and do..👍🏻
Thanks David!
@@ShaneLee-dy4cz Yeah whilst living in Byker and other utter sh*t holes. Irony.
Hi just been watch this video in Beamish. Everything there is from north east. Bakery was actually from Anfield plain co.durham.
With what's happening in England today, it's so poignant to see how it used to be, the good and the bad. Very enjoyable video, cheers 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Well said Nigel :) Yes, it was very interesting to see a completely different perspective of life compared to the one we have today! And it definitely helps to realize how easy it is to forget that we live in much simpler times, which we often complicate ourselves... But that's another topic 😇
@@JayandKarolina so true 😊👍
My cheeks are actually hurting from smiling for a hour and a half! 😄 love this couple.🥰
Oh, that’s so sweet ❤️ Thank you so much for watching!
Johns IS a cafe, its sells homemade icecream but it also sells food, coffee and sweets. Its not just icecream.
Lovely blog guys
Thank you :)
Another great one guys..Beamish is amazing and I like how its developed, Manchester Tart was a standard part of school dinners in the 60s.
Manchester Tart is my very favourite pudding. My Mom used to make it every year for my birthday 🎂 it’s really gorgeous at Beamish❤
You did a really good job documenting everything. Congrats
Thank you so much! We truly loved that day out filming :)
I live Beamish! Great to see use having a great time there, I would recommend you to go back at Christmas time, it’s a magical place x
Yes, it was definitely such a special experience for us! It's amazing that it really was possible to sort of "teleport" to the bygone era! And the whole atmosphere was created by the people working there, because they told very interesting stories!
No doubt it will be so magical around Christmas time 🎄✨❄️
went to Beamish in the 90s very good Museum the chip shop looks lovely😊
Ayyyy, that's such a great memory to have Jack! It's so interesting thinking about it now having the latest QLED technologies available 😂
So glad you’ve been to Beamish it’s an amazing experience absolutely brilliant (I’m from the north east and so proud )
We truly enjoyed it Suzanne and exactly know what great history and people you’re proud of 😊❤️
The fish & Chips there are really the best i have had in my life. bit expensive but well worth it.
I love Beamish, we always go to the Christmas Evenings every year, its so magical x ❤
It must be such a charming atmosphere around Christmas time for sure 🎄🎅🎁 So glad to hear Janine that you've been having fantastic times!
So many ideas have come from watching this vlog for a new Lego Street. This period is perfect for a new project now to start planning 😊
😬👌 This would be a very cool idea indeed!
the pink soap may be carbolic soap which was one of the most used at the time and helped with laundry and personal cleanliness the strange smell is probably phenol i worked in a plant that refined phenol and had a strong smell like the soap.
Amazing video thank you. I have added this place to my bucket list. ❤
We're so glad you enjoyed it! You definitely should! :)
Beamish is a very special place, so anyone who wants to teleport to a bygone era - have to go there!
We used to have Manchester Tart a lot as a dessert in School dinners in the sixties…. In South Shields.
The best value for money in the northeast from someone who lives up north
❤❤ lovely place, davies fish and chips cooked in dripping just like ya nanna cooked in good old days ❤
Well said Marie! The taste of fish and chips was EXACTLY how you've just described it 😍🐠🍟
hi Both thanks so much for sharing the vidio about bremish tram and village, we realy enjoyed watching it very enjoyable , and both me and my wife cant travel far, so found it good
We’re so glad to hear that! It’s really touching when we know that you can travel with us in a virtual way ❤️🎉
The best video I've seen of Beamish.
Going to have to visit here so much interesting things to see, Thomas was loving his job.
Please do! It’s so much worth it 😍
Thank you for sharing this video with us ❤brilliant 👍
We are glad you enjoyed it! We spent a wonderful day in Beamish and a night at Lumley Castle so filming was just pure pleasure 🥳
its is ironic that you went to the chip shop after speaking to the lady that said you should visit Berwick as the tiles in the chip shop originated in a fish and shop in berwick and where moved to beamish after a refurbishment of the berwick shop.
What a connection! We didn't think of that haha
Nice to meet you guys again . I am Kamil from London, United Kingdom 🇬🇧 😎 😍 ✨️.
Hey Kamil! Thanks for watching!!!
Love Beamish great day out. My town had a dolls hospital. Now chucked out if broke, then mended.
Another place to visit is the Kynren show at Bishop Auckland. It has limited shows running from July to September but worth a visit.
Thanks for the recommendation! Will check it out! :)
I haven’t been to beamish since I was a kid I think, it might be time to take a trip with my daughter as we only live half an hour away.
I love Beamish, the miners cottages come from the village/town my daughter lives in, a couple of our buildings do too.
I absolutely loved this going back in time vlog, as well as the haunted castle!
We're so glad to hear that! We had such a great time ourselves filming this Beamish vlog and staying overnight at Lumley Castle 😍 Sometimes it really doesn't seem real what we are doing!
thxs again Jay & Karolina Davy's fish & chips looked great Hugh portion interesting place town people so nice!
Our pleasure! We really loved our day out at the Beamish Museum and would definitely advise you to try them fish & chips because the taste was absolutely awesome! 🐠🍟
Loved the vids, keep up the good work. If you like what you've seen up northeast try northumberland coastline, quaint little fishing villages, castles especially bamburgh, beautiful rugged coastline ,with beautiful beaches ,oldest golf club in England, holy island ,Farne islands .I qaurantee you will love it
We really do appreciate your kind words Steve! We'll check it out! Thank you so much for all the tips 😍
I never write comments on UA-cam channels but the cashier in the bakery was my sister. Randomly stumbled on this video and did not expect to see her 😅
That’s insane 😂 We loved all the baked goods, literally floating butter smell, and the atmosphere in the shop!
Lovely video of beamish I live just down the road so great fan of the place you are both such a nice couple so friendly with the children enjoy the UK the northeast is a great place to live
Thanks so much 😊 You’re so lucky to have the museum at your doorstep! Do you visit it quite frequently???
Nice big bags..... For small portions of sweets.
This sounds awesome! Want to go there! Xxx
Beamish is really a magical place! You should definitely visit it yourself Rachel :)
ofc theres loose leaf tea today lol. Its much better quality than bagged tea as well, due to it being able to expand freely and also not being chopped into tiny pieces
I'm also a loose tee lover so I totally get your point Chris! [Jay]
Been to Beamish about 20 times living in Middlesbrough it is not that far ...
If you want to know what it was like in your nan and Grandad's day this is the best place to come
I remember taking my nan , who when we boarded a tram , said I have never been on one of these since I was 18 and I was 18 then that was 42 years ago, lol . new subscriber 😂🏴
That’s such an interesting perspective Jack! We have no doubt that you really enjoy this living museum as you have been so many times. Now here's the question: which part is the best for you?! 😍

Excellent video, I live a few miles away from Beamish and make the most of the annual ticket, its an amazing day out, come back at Christmas, its magical
Also been to Lumley Castle many times, once went to a Henry the 8th banquet, got dressed up in a Tudor dress and ate chicken legs with my hands, amazing
Wow, that sounds very cool Helen! This must have been such an authentic and unusual experience during the castle's banquet 🤩🐔🍗
Also, would need to definitely visit Beamish over Christmas time when we come on our second visit!
cheeky cow saying dont go to Sunderland.
Agree! Come and visit our lovely coastline! Roker and Seaburn
i live in sunderland, i found that rather ignorant from that woman...sunderlands got plenty of good things to see..
Go to the coast...seaburn, Whitburn and Roker are lovely. Our coastline is really beautiful! @@JayandKarolina
The best museum around.
Couldn't agree more! Such a unique concept and we loved all the conversations with the staff members - the best transfer of knowledge and feeling as if you were actually in those times. Not to mention the food and delicacies also served in the old style! CLASS! 😍😋
As she got on the team the lady said ‘look at this steering wheel’ - erm, a tram runs on tracks!!!!!
