    They both sounded really good, but I preferred the angry charlie personally. The BE-OD sounded a bit fizzier to me (may just had more gain now that I think about it). Both definitely good but for different applications. The AC felt more "Marshall" to me. The BE-OD sounded more modern to me.

      Hit the nail on the head mate. Would love both these on my board. Angry Charlie for my crunch and Friedman for my high gain. Then have a ts9 to boost what ever I'm doing in solos for colour.

      BE = Brown Eye. The BE-100 amplifier also has a higher gain mode called HBE.
      HBE = Hairy Brown Eye
      Then there is the PT20 amplifier
      PT = Pink Taco
      Dave Friedman is a grub.

    My two cents- I own both the BE-OD and the Angry Charlie- the BE-OD takes you to '80's hair band territory right away- a commenter below mentioned "it sounded like Motley Crue"- totally agree with that- and that's sort of it's problem- it only takes you there. I own 3 Friedman amps and they all clean up BEAUTIFULLY with just the volume on the guitar into plexi territory- but the BE-OD doesn't clean up at all. Even with the trim pot turned down- it's still far more gain saturated then the AC. I like the AC better for it's mid bump (especially live- way more prominent and cuts through the mix) and a funny thing is the AC sounds crazy good in the clean channel of my Friedman Runt 50! Kind of like Andy Timmons does with his Lone Star- I tried it with my Runt and it's amazing! Now I need to try it with my Lone Star- that amp has been getting no love lately with the Friedman's in the house. AT has inspired e to try it again with the AC.

    Love the short format videos! A great way to keep up with you guys between your feature length ones. As far as the comparison itself, I literally just went through this dilemma. I went angry Charlie solely for the midrange control and how it sounded with p90s. Absolutely savage. Though it's not quite as tasty with my teles, it gets a bit fizzier.

  • @szpfryderyk
    @szpfryderyk 7 років тому +5

    The thing you guys have been doing so far, which is comparing similar, yet different pedals is the only proper way to demo them and this format is just a brilliant extension of the idea.
    People tend to forget that with their gear those pedals may sound very different (like buffers in tuners or loopers or different pickups impedance may completely alter the tone). It's the changes that specific units introduce are what will become apparent and stay consistent.
    In short, not the setup but the differences are what really matters.
    Keeping it short and to the point is an excellent idea and your execution is flawless!

    Love the bass response of the BE OD. Many gain pedals lack this. The Angry Charlie sounded great, but I lean toward the Friedman pedal because it seemed to have a little more gain capability and heavier bottom end.

  • @humbucker1414
    @humbucker1414 7 років тому +2

    Thanks guys! I'm assuming this means more frequent videos? Don't let all the love for this shorter A/B format discourage you from your typical longer videos. I think there are two types of people when it comes to researching gear: 1) the "tell me which one to buy" guys, and 2) the "teach me everything you know because I thirst for knowledge..." guys. I am so much the latter. I get so many little wonderful pearls out of your videos, typically when you're taken off onto a tangent. Your extensive experience is clearly evident and I want to benefit from as much of it as I can. However the "type 1" gear buyer is just trying to skip through all that "boring" stuff to get the "answer" so these A/B videos should be a breath of fresh air to them. I'm excited just to get videos twice as often!
    As for the pedals, the AC is going to be one of my next two purchases. I was excited to hear the BE-OD, but it seems to lay a treble fizz on top of everything. Not a bad sound, but I prefer the charlie.
    Thanks guys!

    I like to hear you playing to make a comparison, but I also want to hear what you have to say about the pedals. It's the insight picked up from comments made during the conversation about the pedals that help with the understanding of why things sound the way they do and how they affect the sound that I like to watch the channel for. More of a balance between chat and playing would suit me more. Not complaining as always like to watch the show, just was expecting more information about these two pedals. I have the previous version of the Angry Charlie and I'm thinking of upgrading to the new version so I was looking forward to hearing what you had to say about these two pedals.

    I have both of the video, in fact, I collect several boutique pedals (wampler pinnacle, Wampler plexi drive, EVH 5150, ampteawer tight metal, boggie thottrle box , heavy empress, Triple Wreck etc). By far, Friedman is better along with heavy empress. I don't have diesel, so I can't talk. About Friedman: It has more punch, a natural shine and like a tube amp, without being aggressive, it mirrors the evolution of a marshall. It is perfect to play, there is not much to regulate. Who likes medium and high-gain marshall style, I don't know any better.

    The Greer Little Samson is another great option for people looking for that Marshall crunch/high(ish) gain tone in a pedal. In my opinion, even though it's not as tweakable as the Angry Charlie, BE-OD, or the Andy Timmons, it's a bit more consistent and adaptable across all guitar/amp combinations.

    To me, this test illustrates two points:
    1. Running your amps totally clean for the purpose of "hearing the pedal" actually only lets you "hear the pedal sounding like dogshit"
    2. If you can, get your base tone from the amp alone. (Many people need more flexibility than this approach allows, myself included).

But, I've learned enough from you both to know, unless I [too] had a custom shop Strat and '58RI to go with my croc-skinned Lonestar or Victory amp-- the comparison is moot with respect to my rig. But if I did...I'll take the "Charlie Brown" pedal. Thanks for the mid-week post!

    The Friedman sounds great but it’s too “metally” for me. I like the much more classic rock sound of the Charlie by far but if I were a metal-head, that Friedman would take the cake. I don’t think it was fair fight as they both do completely different things.

      Jorgie WTF the Friedman BE OD has an internal gain knob, which you can decrease or increase the overall gain with a flat screwdriver. I turned mine all the way down and that changes the game. This pedal can vary from a sweet, subtle
      overdrive for classic rock to a screaming, pandora box of metal.

    Charlie has more of a "larger grain" than the Friedman, which although has tighter and more articulated bottom end (as mentioned) has a nasty fizzy thing I don't like at all. In my opinion, Charlie is more versatile.

    Fantastic video! More comparisons would be amazing.
    I think the Friedman may replace my Wampler Sovereign as my go to gain sound!

    On the BE OD, lower the trim pot to taste, keep the gain 9ish, use the tight knob past noon and run it at 18v, you can do all kinds of things.

    Meh, if you guys ever have the chance,
    try the original big black box Carl Martin Plexitone.
    I've yet to find a more satisfying MIAB pedal.

    BE-OD for the win.
    You want more mids?Turn them up on your amp!

  • @akshayseller73
    @akshayseller73 2 роки тому

    I’ve owned both these pedals and they sound better than the other depending on the amp/ pickup combo. It’s all about EQ. The standard BE OD lacks mids so it works well with something like the Dimarzio Tone zone which is all Bass and Mids. Whereas the Angry Charlie works better with scooped pickups or amp settings. The only other difference is that the AC is less compressed which can be good and bad. You would definitely need a pedal to clip the AC for a tight metal sound.

    Love the new video format guys! I have both pedals in this video but I use the JHS way more. Worth noting the Friedman has about double the available gain as the JHS. I have the Friedman on my mini pedalboard and the JHS on my main board. Future episode idea: BD-2 Waza vs. Keeley modded BD-2!

  • @memygtar
    @memygtar 7 років тому +2

    AC sounded warmer, classic Marshall. Reminds me more of a modded plexi TBH. The Friedman sounded more cutting, good highs and lows. A little more complex in the overtones and more 80s hair metal to my ears. Tone is subjective and these are just the sounds on the video I heard. AC for slash, Friedman for Def leppard for me

    Haven't had the Angry Charlie on my board, own the Friedman, I'm biased but this video didn't make me regret my decision. I'm more of a mild/low gain guy, but the BE-OD is a ton of fun and a great option for the board even if you're a mild gain person.

    Hmmm I used to own the Friedman BE OD but sold it , the actual amp is much better not as noisy as the pedal
    For me the Angry Charlie v2 is the best one I don't dig the v 3 harder to get the sweet spot

    Running both of those through a TC Sentry loop would have really tightened things up for both. Very noisy, but good. I did like the JHS a bit more.

    Geeez, the Angry Charlie on the Les Paul sounds amazing.
    I guess the higher low end on the LP plus the low end boost on the Friedman doesn't bring out the same crisp tone that Charlie brings by boosting the mids on LP. Amazing tone.
    The Strat was just outclassed here. Also, would have been good to hear it on the Neck pickup as well...

    Very difficult to say which I preferred. As you've mentioned, they're both very different. Been a fan of the Angry Charlie for a while now. Although hearing the Friedman only recently, I definitely would like to try it out. By the way, thank you for the midweek show guys. Looking forward to Friday. Cheers.

    I Love short video's!! And personally I don't really love the midrange in the angry charlie everybody loves so much. Guess it is really a taste-thing.
    These pedals would really rock in parallel haha!!

  • @frankie28web
    @frankie28web 7 років тому +2

    The Friedman sounds a little scooped and it doesn't have a Mids knob. That makes the JHS a clear winner in my book...

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing
      @Paul_Lenard_Ewing 7 років тому

      Yes but what they didn't show you on the video is the BE-OD sustains forever and you can get a note to lift off to an octave higher even at very low volumes. Yes most pedals will do that at higher volumes if you lean into your speaker,,but not at low volumes. I have them both. For solos the Friedman is the winner for anything else the JHS is better..it quite simply has a better tone them most pedals. I can not imagine not having old Charlie. it is just a mater of time before we get another pedal doing the Friedman thing.

  • @jordanfrank9723
    @jordanfrank9723 6 років тому

    Regardless of guitar or amp, I'd take Angry Charlie for Lead, and BEOD for Rhythm. Accentuated mid-range of the AC helps it to stand out even with the mids dialed back, but the tight control on the BEOD can really help open up that thick rhythm playing character.

    Two great pedals. It depends on what style of music you like.most pedals with a presence knob can get me a bit buzzy. The BE-OD reminds me of the EQD-Talons pedal. I prefer the AC . Both pedals are very good, this was a great comparison.
