Excellent video- I am a 66 year old Brighton season ticket holder. I remember those matches so well. No fan ever called us the Dolphins- we didn’t have a nickname other than Albion. On a hot day at a Brighton v Palace match in the mid 70’s the Palace fans were chanting Eagles Eagles and the North Stand just responded with Seagulls Seagulls and it stuck. Numerous people claim the have started it but we will never know. UTA!
Sorry for earlier rant , which I stand by. But that was one of the best explanation of our rivalry I’ve ever heard. From someone who lived through it’s origins.
Spot on Dan. I’m a Villa fan, but I hate it when people write off the M23 rivalry, when they simply don’t understand, the game is literally everything to both sets of fans, it doesn’t matter that they’re miles away from each other, it just comes off as ignorance
Excellent behaviour. I'm a Palace ST-holder as I grew up in South Norwood but I wasn't raised by football fans, so I've never personally felt the rivalry and can't find it within myself to dislike a Brighton or Millwall fan who supports their local team, over people who gloryhunt big teams with no local or family connection to them. That said, our games with Brighton are huge occasions regardless, which have ironically become the source of ridicule due to the success of both clubs making it a regular PL fixture that previously uninformed PL fans now have to acknowledge. Meanwhile Sky and BT presenters and pundits awkwardly save face by pretending to have always known about the rivalry when broadcasting the games. All of them should be made to watch this video 👏🏾
Good video mate, well done. I'm an Albion fan, and you're correct in saying that this fixture prompts more excitement and anxiety - it is the one that both sets of fans really want to win, and are desperate not to lose. I imagine it's the same for Palace, but there's often discussion about whether contemporary players and coaching staffs "get" the rivalry, and approval when it is evident that some do (eg Zaha, Dunk), because certainly it is driven by supporters now even though much of it was rooted in the competition between Mullers and El Tel. That said, I have a feeling that there is a growing, (still grudging) respect between Seagulls and Eagles supporters which is coming about through the shared acknowledgement that we are two similarly sized clubs - survivors through awful times, and rooted in their communities - who have to contend against the super-greedy, plasticky giants. May Gerry Ryan's busted leg forgive me, but I have recently, on occasion, found myself internally cheering Palace on when they're playing one of the ESL wannabes. Alright, good luck with the channel, and the worst possible luck for Palarse on Saturday. Seaweed 'til I die 🙂
It has become a rivalry over the years, which is totally different from a same city derby. Our natural rivalry is mongwall and Charlieton. I actually like bha and the town, so when the rivalry grew, it actually pissed me off!😤
Nice video, Brighton fan here, looking forward to the game later, hopefully we come away with 3 points! Enjoy the banter this is what football is all about
Great vid, up the Palace. As a new palace fan, this is a perfect explanation of where it all started. I heard about the money throwing at Palace fans, but didn't understand the build up with the run of fixtures which caused it. Looking forward to 3 points Thursday
Hi and great explanation of the reasonings behind the rivalry; I first saw Palace play Workington in 1957 as a twelve year old and a fan was born. Having seen all those games, o yes the blood pressure in us fans rose to new heights! Of course we had another hiccup with them with poo//gate in13/14 which I guess many younger fans may only hear that story but hopefully in time they will get the whole picture. I’m now 77 and live in West Yorkshire hence dont get to Selhurst very often but I do watch all games.that I can stream and I have Palace tv+ so am well into the u21s andunder18s. Great piece from you and I wish you the best for the future. As this is my wife’s iPad just to let you know im Pete👍
Brilliantly put. I'm from the US and I remember having to dig when I became a Palace fan about why exactly we hated Brighton so much. I think a twitter thread of yours is how I learned a good chunk of it, and this video will be great for new fans and neutrals alike
Great video 👍 I'm a Leicester fan and have watched and read about the rivalry before. But it's great to hear it explained so well from a supporter of one of the clubs
This was really informative, I never really understood the rivalry but it just shows that rivalry doesn’t always have to be a geographical thing. Good luck to both teams on the weekend but I have to say “El Gatwicko” is genius 😂
Holy crap I new parts of this story but you just clarified alot more than I ever could have ever known, been a Palace fan since 1981 when I was 4 years old and got told some of the reasons by my dad and his mates..!! Been following you on twitter for about a year now and now on UA-cam.. Bluddy well done, keep going, you're on a roll..!! 😎😁😀
That was such a fascinating explanation of why BHA and Palace are rivals. As a Brighton fan this is something that I have never really thought about too much. I didn't start watching them until much later than the 70s :)
Great video Dan. I remember the beginnings of the rivalry between Brighton and Palace in 1970's as a young lad who was too naive to understand at the time, why wearing a red and blue scarf round my wrist would offend a grown man at the Goldstone 🔴🔵 Some people who don't understand, criticise the rivalry due to its distance, but I've never heard anything said about Ipswich vs Norwich and they are further apart than us and as you said Chelsea vs Leeds. It's not always down to geography.
Great work, Dan. Thank you. Really appreciate these videos and your commentary for how it helps me keep up with CPFC from here in the States. Keep at it, mate.
Really great video mate, I’m a young brighton fan and this has helped improve my knowledge on the rivalry, I’m going up to Selhurst park for the first time at the weekend and I think it’s our best chance ever to smash you, but knowing us we’ll lose 1-0 haha. Good luck for then mate
Excellent summary Dan. Really clear and well explained. The rivalry in the 2013 season play offs were certainly made more spicy when someone in the Brighton side shat in our changing room. Plus can forget when Steve Coppell managed Brighton and we spanked them 5-0. The club made t-shirts to celebrate.
Great explanation Dan. I attended two of those 76/77 fixtures at the Goldstone ground. Unlike most BHA fans I have a soft spot for Palace .... just not when we play each other 😄 May the best team win on Saturday😉
It's also quite a thing that the rivalry survived over the period in the 90s when Brighton fell down the leagues and we hardly played each other, especially as it was a relatively recent one.
Nice one for clearing this up mate. We (Coventry) have a bit of weird relationship/rivalry with Sunderland going back to 1977 which a lot of fans don’t seem to understand. Happy to explain further if you wanted
@@professionalman1960 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I forgot that relegation is decided by 1 game a season. You lot should have played better across the season and not left yourself in that position

As a Brighton fan, the first games I look for a the start of each season are the Brighton / Palace fixtures. Whilst there is the rivalry, we supporters do have a ceasefire each year for the REMF games.

If you knew your history you would know the rivalry started back in 1973/4 at a pre season friendly at the Goldstone when Palace fans took over the entire town before the game and ran Brighton fans all over the ground during and after the game! The next game in the League at the Goldstone was a different story with even handed fights everywhere and the animosity between the 2 sets of fans was well and truly established then, well before the 75/76 season!
Agreed, I remember pre season “friendly” matches long before mullery and venables when there was always violence between the *CRYSTAL PALACE* football club, and . . . .bha.
As a Brigthton fan from 1974 me and all of my fello Albion fans see this game as a derby. Palace were our nearest football league club untill Crawley entered the top for leagues. I'm baffled some discredit the rivalry due to the lack of a geographical connection. Surely such venom and passion existing despite no adjacency is testament in and of itself to the strength of the dislike the fans feel for eachother.
This video is not quite correct. The rivalry began before 1976. Try three years before when Palace smashed up the town of Brighton and Hove in a pre-season friendly. When Brighton fans saw the fixture list the following 1974/75 season, pitting the Albion in an opening day clash with Palace, they saw a chance to avenge matters as well as a rare chance to put one over a recent Division One side. The local Evening Argus paper wrote of the intensity of the games between the sides both in 1974/75 and 1975/76.
Trust me, staring at a camera, with a ring-light on whilst focussing on what you want to say without stumbling over your words, your brain is on such a state of alert that I think blinking goes out of the window.

@@PHTV11no one likes them, they don’t care😂
@@TomClarkSouthLondon There's a similar rivalry between Swindon and Gillingham that dates from the 70's... It means more to The Gills than it does to us, as we're preoccupied with Oxford and the Bristol clubs, whereas they have nothing better to concern theirselves with..
Watched both games at The Goldstone Ground and the one at Stamford Bridge …Ron Challis was the ref in question …awful!
Challis of the Palace
You forgot to mention the sickening challenge on Ryan by Hughton. He should have been arrested for GBH
Come on you Seagulls
Poogate?
Think about Man Utd and Liverpool or Man Utd and Leeeds Utd
SEAGULLLSSSSS
It started before what your going on about. It started when you mugs got in the northstand in a preseason friendly. It kicked off then, your talking shite mate
It's always a greatly anticipated/dreaded fixture but it's mostly a bit of pantomime spiciness. When it goes beyond that it tends to get a little pathetic but I can't remember any real incidents for some time. From both sides it always adds a cherry on top, getting one over the other especially with bit of late drama (why did you let it bounce!)
Here's to many more 🍻
I reckon you'd do well in this by the way, you really should enter 👍
