Your channel is the only thing I look at for pond stuff. Over time I've actually used some of your ideas, but doing them in even much cheaper versions (I'm quite poor), and weirdly come up with a few things completely on my own that have really transformed the whole experience of having a pond for me. You also explain the actual ecosystem stuff better than anyone out there. Thanks, mate!
Also I commented this before getting too far into the video and it's funny because right now I am working on turning my DIY skimmer into part of a sort of bog filter!

your videos are fantastic. Built a 120 gallon duck pool in the back yard with a bog filter and added plants. Water has been pretty clear for my ducks to swim and play in poop in!

Now I just have to smooth out my walls and shelves since my liner is exposed so a few more days cleaning it all up and put the liner in 5 days and hopefully weather will cooperate. Great update Kev I’ve finally filled my pond just over 15000 litres and half way through finishing off my bog filter but I massively underestimated how much rock and gravel I would need started with two bulk bags turned out I needed another 2 😂 nearly 4 tonnes in total hopefully finishing this week 👍

I have a small bog filter on my like 600 gallon pond maybe 60 gold fish and uv canister and even the small low volume pump with the bog and uv with 60+ fish keeps everything crystal clear

@@Ozponds yea I didn't realize how critical the uv was until this year as soon as it got warm I had a crazy algae bloom slapped the uv can on and within like 14 hours it was back to clear with the tiny 9watt
I personally don’t use UV. Multiple ponds in the sun. But my ponds also aren’t stocked densely.

Yes. They are a kind of filter media used in large aquaculture. I got them off a guy selling an old aquaponic system. I put them in that pond to increase the surface area and give some shelter for any fish fry. Thanks mate👍
Thank you for all the info you provide. Ugh, wish I had stuck with your advice and didn't allow my local pond supply store talk me out of putting a valve at the top of the inflow pipe. I am fairly sure my check valve has failed. My new 55 gallon drum bog filter is new, and totally covered in slime algae. I believe the check valve has algae in it, so it is not sealing properly when I turn off the pump. The local pond store also had me purchase a pump that was way too strong (1000gph for my 300 gallon stock tank pond). I am switching to a 500 gph pump, but am not sure what to do about all the slime algae in the bog filter. Perhaps this is merely the "new system" stage? I am using various sized lava rock (large on the bottom up to small at the top) for the media inside the 55 gallon drum. Thoughts?
You could do a 300gal pump for that sized bog filter. Algae is most likely just the new phase, that could last for quite a while. Remove as much as you can manually. If it’s still a problem in a few months give the bog a good clean.

It certainly won’t hurt. It will act as a bit of a pre filter 👍
Hey Kev I just finished adding and addition to my original pond. Things seem to be doing good. Added some beautiful new Koi. I guess the only problem is some of them tend to spend most of their time inside the big rock cave lol. I’ve put a separate pump and Aquascape biofall going into my waterfall. The original pond has a Savio skimmer feeding into another bio falls and a waterfall. I’ve put in small bales of barley straw and seems to be maintaining the algae growth. I do need to add more aquatic plants yet. However it’s fall going into winter and hard to find decent plants. Now to cut to the chase. Do you think a homemade bog filter would do a better job than the bio falls. The only problem I seem to be having is having to clean the filter pads so often . Obviously there is dirt that they are taking out and my water is crystal clear. Don’t really know why there is so much dirt to be honest. My original pond was simply a mess. Had several big storms. Waterfall was leaking some places a little and it would draw in dirt too. Fixing all of this I totally cleaned out all the muck it’s all fresh. I have a leaf net over all. Still a few leaves get through but basically it should be a good system. I think I have enough wet surface although I’m still going to add more rocks . I’m not sure just how long it will take for the bacteria to really colonize . Just how much muck will this prevent when working? I’m guessing because of the fish poo there will always be some. I have 11 Koi. The biggest is 12 inches. 4 7 inches. 2 about 5 and the rest are baby’s at about 3 to 4. Not sure my gallons. Hard to calculate because of the shape and varied depths but I’m gonna say it’s about 800 gallons. I know you don’t have Koi down under but I’m guessing you still have fish to gallons estimates. I honestly have no idea how much they poo. I had wanted to do a bottom drain on the addition but it was too hard to accomplish with my location. My second pump pulls from the lowest bottom area. So basically I’m wondering if I built one of your homemade bog filters do you think it will eliminate having to wash my filter pads so much. I use a layer of a pad that goes from a medium density , then a polishing pad topped off with a charcoal infused pad. I have this on both bio falls. I have about 4500 GPH between the 2 pumps. The Savio skimmer has 2 coarse filter pads and I have a bag of lava rock in there. The bio falls have bags of 1 inch balls. The ones that provide the most wet surface area. So I do have clear water , no greenish color. Although I was very surprised to see some algae forming on the new liner. BTW I used 45 mm EDPM . In theory I think I should have about the perfect little pond. So I’m just wondering if adding a bog filter would eliminate some filter maintenance . Also about how much time till the whole new set up will take to be colonized properly. I can see the value of slower water in a bog. I’m also adding a Tee’d off line off the bigger pump to make a stronger water flow in the addition . I know they love a current and now line up in the flow between waterfall and pump. While this is ok it’s the location. It’s at the very front of the pond making it hard to see the fish unless you stand right over it. Sorry this is so long. I’m going to try and send you a short video of this pond. I’ve had a small area and budget else I would have done much differently. However I’m still loving it. G’day Lee. A homemade bog filter might help reduce maintenance a little, but it really is more of a biological filter than a mechanical filter. To remove the poo and sediment (dirt) you really need the higher flow and filter sponges (which is your biofalls). Sounds like you have enough biological filtration as the water is clear.
Hi, I have just stumbled across your amazing channel and feel really inspired. Your videos are clear and informative and cover everything any pond owner needs to know.
I live in Spain, it's got and sunny most of the time. I have battled with a green pond in the summer months despite shading the pond and lots of surface cover from lily pads. I have come to the conclusion that I need to replace my current (too small) gravel and sponge filter with a bigger bog filter. The pond is 5000l and I will be using a 1000l IBC to build my bog filter. Not sure what plants to use in the filter or where to source them but I'll figure that out.
My one question is. Do the bog filters attract mosquitoes and create a breeding ground. Obviously I will keep the water level in the filter slightly below the gravel. Will this be enough?

No that won’t attract mosquitoes. You’ll attract dragonflies, they’ll eat the mosquitoes 👍
Hey Kev, good video/ info as usual! Just wondered if you use anything to stop the smaller rock/ gravel from dropping down into the gaps between the bigger rocks at the bottom? I think in one of my bog filters the smaller gravel has started to slip down through the gaps. Thanks again mate!
I have tried using geotextile but I worry about it clogging. Now I just take care to make sure that the rocks aren’t small enough to fit through the precious layer. I find if I use 3 different sizes of rock/ pebble I’m good as gold.
@@Ozponds thank you, another quick question, I’m about to start on a new pond build and the bog filter will be a 500L plastic tote, so that would mean I would need a 3000 litre per hour pump, but the ones I’m looking at are 2500 litres per hour or 3500 litres per hour. In your opinion, would it better to go slightly higher or slightly lower. The pond itself is going to be about 1,500 litres. Thanks!

Hi, me again (last time hopefully). In the diagram shown at 9:58, what does the end of the pipe from the pond inflow have to be like? It looks like a T-junction but should the pipe not go right across the bottom? If so should it be capped and have holes drilled along the horizontal bit? Thanks, Mark
I wouldn’t worry too much about much about the plumbing on this one, it was one of my first filters. I’ve simplified it now, as long as the water disperses at the base you’re good.
Keith, will an HDPE liner Over and above a geotextile suffice for a natural pool? My kids would take a dip into it..hence it will be a pond where we are taking a dip. 35 ft by 30 ft
Maybe. I’ve never used it on such a project. I used it once on a grey water wetland, still going strong. 👍
Do you have any videos on folds or pleats for pond liner? I thought I saw an aquascapes video once on corners and folds but I forget which channel and can't find the video so had hope maybe you have one or know of a good video for doing straight corners without seam welding. Thx. 2 more days until we dig and praying my neighbor is still on board he said we can get access from his driveway to get through the fence but today doesn't seem as cooperative. Going to give him a gift card to dinner and a movie tomorrow and hope that sweetens the deal a bit.

@@Ozponds thanks. I'll look at David's resources I appreciate the help. My husband is my muscle so I was trying to show him some last min resources so I don't have to walk him through every detail. I decided to clear a second path to the backyard just in incase but have to remove a brick raised flower bed attached to my house to get in. I dug up all my plants and told my husband he can demo it as long as he builds me back another brick flower bed along the side of the house. Gets tricky because our street is on a hill and has retaining walls at every driveway so there's a drop off into another neighbors drive and my clearance is minimal so if I remove the flowerbed and drive real careful I won't fall off tge retaining wall. Doing it this way keeps my neighbors happy but probably cost me an extra 2 days to Remove all my dirt one load at a time around the whole perimeter of my house 🤷♀️ oh well I got options either way I'm digging a pond in 2 days no matter how I get back there lol.

Great information, I did try to replicate your idea. Unfortunally my pump is 1200L per hour and is to strong for my bog filter. Do you know if I can install a valve to regulate the output flow of the sumergible pump? I mean I do not want to damage the pump. My pump does not have anything to regulate the flow it is jut plug and works.

I'm going to try to build a bog similar the drawing you have at about 9:50, and I was wondering if the valve that's meant to keep water from siphoning back into the pond could be a small hole drilled into the pvc pipe instead of a control valve. It just needs to be open a little bit, right?
Yeap that’s fine just make sure the pump is sized correctly. The valve allows you to move extra water over the surface of the bog.

Hi Kev, we just finished building our first patio pond with bog filter Yay!! Thanks so much to you, I learned a lot from your videos! I have one question. I have sand at the bottom of my pond , and pump seats half way in the sand in small container with foam, but fish poo seats on top of the sand and doesn’t get sucked in by the pump. Is there the way to have fish poo eliminated and protect pump from sand? Because we are planning to build big swimming pond in the future with sand bottom as well.
Ah, the elusive clean bottomed pond. I’m convinced that no matter what sediments are going to accumulate in the bottom of a pond. You can use jets or wave makers to move the sediment from certain areas but it will just build up in another area. I think if you want a super clean bottomed pond regular vacuuming is required. Having a solids handling pump in the area where the sediments accumulate would reduce the amount of vacuuming needed, but would increase the buildup in the bog or other filter, therefore increasing the maintenance to the filters.

Hi Kev, love your videos especially the ones where you show us how to build a bog filter. Well I am in the process of building one, plastic water container 60 liter which should be ample for my pond. One question though, on the bottom of the filter I want to leave a void under the pebbles. How do I do that and what do I use, also the pvc pipes go in the void or above? Thanks for your input.

You can use anything for the void that will support the weight of the rock above. In a 60 litre tub you might even decide it’s unnecessary as it would be easy enough to empty the bog if need be. If you still want to create the void a piece of 90mm stormwater pipe with lots of holes would do the job. The pvc pipe will go into the void.
@@Ozponds thanks for the response. So the void doesn't necessary be the whole area of the bog, a piece of 90mm storm water pipe, the length of the bog above the drain hole is enough I take it.

In a small bog like yours that would be fine.

What ph is your pond? I ask because I keep mine at 6.4 (because I have plants similar to an aquaponics system) and the ammonia joins to a hydrogen ion and stays in the form of ammonium
It varies. I don’t test very often I’ve seen it in the 6’s but more often it’s around 7.
Hi there, thanks for your informative video. Love your channel! I live in South West Victoria and have recently built a 500 litre pond for my comet goldfish. I also adopted another comet and fancy and three rosy barbs from a friend who were kept in a tank much too small. So with only 3 goldfish and 3 small barbs I believe my bioload should be easily handled by a small big filter. I built one in a 60 litre tub. Used Scoria rocks as recommended in another video and bought a single umbrella plant for it. It was the only one from your list of recommended that I could get my hands on. I went to plant it in and I noticed it had those little green fertiliser pellets all through the soil. My question is, hoping you know the answer, are these little pellets safe for fish? I’m worried that If I plant it into the bog filter and one comes loose and flows down into the pond a fish might eat it? Is that going to kill my fish do you know? Also, do you have a video on what you do in winter? I’m worried about how cold it is going to get outside for them 🤦🏼♀️

G’day Nikki. Did I recommend umbrella plant? For a bog filter? If I did I wish I didn’t. They have quite vigorous roots. In regard to the fertiliser I’m not sure if that would harm the fish. Usually we aim to rinse off the soil and fertiliser to prevent adding nutrients to the water (that would cause an algae bloom). But I’ve never heard of, or had personal experience of a fish eating some. As for winter the goldfish will be fine…the rosy barbs might prefer to move indoors. Also don’t feed the goldfish once the water temp dips below 10C. Hope that helps 👍

Hi! I'm starting a project this year and I'm keen on making a pond of about 10000 liters. I'm following you for quite some time as I don't know what I'm doing and I try to make it as diy project. Did I understand correctly that the pomp I need to use for the bog (100 liters big) needs to be 6 times its capacity? Would I need a 60000 liter per hour pomp? It would be a huge pomp probably. Thanks so much for all your info on the channel!
No. 6 X the bog volume. So for example your pond is 10,000 litres. A bog of 10% would be 1,000 litres. So the pump running the bog would deliver 6000 litres. I hope that helps👍

Hi Kev, I have been learning heaps from your videos. Thanks for all the info. :) I just picked up a 2m diameter x 60cm deep round poly stock trough (approx 1880lt)for my first pond (gumtree bargain @ $100- stoked!) . I am figuring on getting 1x 200lt blue food drum for the bog filter set up. Prob only going to start with 6-8 goldfish for that volume of water - to see how I go.
I am Interested in how I can best get water directed into a skimmer/ submersible pump section opposite the bog outflow in a pre formed round pond like this. Also, I am not sure how any excess flow from the pump might be diverted into side/ base jets to improve circulation and so that I am not flowing all of the water too fast through the bog. Was figuring on a 3000lph pump for bog to try to do both functions off one pump. Is this advisable or doable? Otherwise I will scale pump back to 2000lph and sort something else for extra aeration/ circulation on the pond. For the skimmer you just need to create some kind of structure that water can’t move through. You would leave a narrow opening so all the water must move through that to reach the pump. That will create the surface tension. It could even be something as simple as a bucket where the top of the bucket is just an inch or so below the waters surface. The pump sits inside the bucket pulling all water in. You could disguise it with rocks. Have a search for the diy skimmer videos that should help explain it.
With regards to the jets you can just split the main line off and add some little valves that will help regulate the flow. I have a video where I added jets to my dream pond. You’ll find that in the dream pond playlist. Hopefully that will help.
@@Ozponds cool. Thanks for that. I will look through the play list again. So a slightly oversized pump, if energy efficient enough, would be the better bet overall? I think I just watched one of your videos about ‘the theories of malm’ 🤣 so I will start off with pump and skimmer bucket straight on the bottom of the pond. Was going to do a ledge for it, but a 20-25kg commercial mayonnaise bucket should hit a good height near the top of the water level in a 60cm deep pond. Trying to keep it super simple to begin with . Main fear is keeping frogs away as I know that from a neighbour’s pond years ago that the constant ‘ bonk’ noise drives my husband and I spare! .
Not necessarily. Sometimes I prefer to use multiple pumps so I know exactly how much flow is going where. The frogs will find the pond! They always do.
I enjoyed your channel & I like your pond 😍. My new pond is almost same with yours, it's 1010 liter but I bought 5000l/h submersible pump 😬 since I'm beginner to this hobby. Do you have any suggestion, will it be works if I divide the water into some flows? Or should I buy another slower pump 😢. And its for turtles not fish. Thanks..
It depends, what type of filter you are using?
@@Ozponds I'm using DIY 2 buckets filter, filled wth sponges & pumice mix wth coral.
Then high flow should be ok. You’ll just need to clean the sponges very often.

Aloha, Sir does it matter on the size of the rocks being used in a bog filter. I see a lot saying to used a 3/8” pea gravel? But aren’t all gravel or rocks aren’t really 3/8” all around. Hope this comment made any sense?
I’ve used many different sizes all will provide surface area for the good bacterias.
Do you recommend any other filter media other than rock/pebbles? Like kitchen scrubs/nylon nets etc? As I require to move the filter in my case
Your vids are very informative, but I wish you would explain hiw they are connected. I understsnd your pump is connected to the biological filter but hiw do you tie in the bog filters?

@Ozponds haven't seen any, but will look. I have a 250 gallon pond I am installing. I plan to have a spillway at the top first spilling into a small pooling area then continuing down into the pond. You would connect the pump to the inlet, then connect hose from the oulet to the spillway. I would think you could use a tee to run your hose to a bog filter?
I forgot to mention I have a 950 GPH pump.
Just purchased your 10.00 pdf. Loads of good info, but still dies not show how you connect everything. I did see that it is suggested to have a separate pump for the big filter, which I had already thought about, maybe a small solar one.

What are those black hoses in the bottom of your pond? Is that ag pipe?
It’s biological media. It was just there to provide hiding areas for the fish.
What exactly is biological media. Good idea to give them hiding places - am just using ricks and plants at moment
Biological media is just anything used to grow bacteria. The bacteria need surface area and those structures provide lots of surface area in a small amount of space.
Can the bog filter be effective without bog plants? I've used a fair amount of different ones and so often their roots become a matted mess and clog the PVC inlet. I've thinned the root systems out but its quite a bit of work to remove all the rocks to get to the roots to do a proper thinning. Horsetail was especially annoying as it became a matted mess at the bottom
Yes. Still works without plants.
I have a sealed drum three quarters full of 10 mm scoria pump inlet at bottom out at top. Then piped to a pot of mint above the feature again in 10mm scoria. I redo it every couple of years, nothing is maintainance free but this keeps my water clear to the point I've stopped trying to improve it.
I’m going to redo a small pond I made 15 years ago that succumbs to algae all the time. Is the bog filter using its own pump, but then if I want a water feature (like a gentle water cascade) is that using a different pump? And how does the faster moving pump for the water feature affect the slower filtration of the bog filter?

I followed your plan and the result is nothing short of impressive . I love the simplicity of your blog filter design . The water is clear ,but for some strange reason I feel a UV filter would add something scientific to the system . What is your opinion on UV filters ? Thank you for great videos
Great to hear. My opinion on UV is that if we create a pond with plenty of good bacteria and a healthy overall ecosystem, a UV is completely unnecessary.
@@Ozponds Thank you for the reply and informative videos . I will follow your videos and work on establishing a ecosystem ,which is a science in itself . I added bacteria starter but am worried about hurting the fish .Are your fish reproducing ? I heard that is difficult to accomplish in a pond .
They’ll breed if there’s plenty of hiding spots and abundant food. If you want many babies to survive you need to remove the eggs from the pond. Otherwise survival rates are low, the adults will eat them.
@@Ozponds Thank you for taking the time to reply . I have a 500 gallon pond with 8 goldfish , which is enough . But it would be nice to have a few off springs . I will be introducing plants in the next 2 weeks . The water is crystal clear . Went from green to clear in 4 days , amazing .I also like to add tat I am new to having a fish pond , you been very helpful
Too funny watching the two goldfish have a lady and the tramp moment with that worm. They both sucked up an end, everyone else was chasing to get a slice of wet noodle! Lol❤🪱

What if my pump is too strong for the breather pipe and water comes out of it?

Hi I'm wanting to build a pond but don't want to use electrics. Is there a way to build one without pumps and filters? I was thinking of having just common goldfish or common minnows in it. Possibly no fish?

Thanks very much for getting back to me and for the info. My garden project for next year is to do what I've wanted to do for years, which is obviously build a pond. I'm wanting to do a wildlife pond and so want to try to keep things as natural as possible but I know that any water body has an eco system that needs balance and that's where the hard part comes in haha! I was planning on something approx 6x8ft and a depth of a metre. I'm going to line it and I was planning on laying some small pebbles/stones on the bottom with rocks covering the entire bottom and shelves of the pond but now I've seen your video referring to the false bottom I'm not sure how I'd create that with the rocks as they would be too heavy. Do you have any ideas please? I was also planning on providing lots of plants and also adding a few of those baskets with the iron in. Do you think this would be sufficient. Do you know of another way I could create a false bottom? Do you think I could drill holes in plumbing pipes and then put the rocks on top? Also would this need any specific cleaning and would I need to change the cat litter or add any further iron to the baskets over time? Sorry for the long message and thanks for your time, effort and knowledge. Much appreciated.

2. Pump size - 6 times of filter size ..
I wonder why/how a "bog" filter gets it's name? When I think of a "bog", I think of a lot of digging to get my 4WD out.
😂 dunno. I guess slow flow plus plants. I like how aquascape call them wetlands. Probably more apt.
How long does it take? We’ve built the bog filter, the water is clear but the liner is still green

@@Ozponds I know it won’t change the liner color. I’m talking about the algae on the liner. We scrubbed it off when we changed the water, but it came back after a few days. The water is clear though. Just not sure if it’s because Of the water change or the Bog Filter.
The bog filter won’t stop algae growing on the liner.

Hi big fan learn lots from your channel, I have a question I have a 700 liter pond I want to add 2 goldfish for the first time but I have water lilies and other plants will they eat my plants or what species should I get any tips thanks keep up the awesome work 😊
I’ve got water lilies in 3 ponds with goldfish. I haven’t had an issue with them eating them.
