      @@Kwwwyjibo very true since grunge has more classic rock vibes and nu metal is more of the sub genre of metal. Metal had an acquired taste. Grunge was like a mix of punk , metal , garage rock , indie and hard 70s rock with power vocals. It had the blues root like all great rock bands (artist) have. I heard grunge revival is gonna happen sometime soon.

      @unknown user "He should have continued trying to sober up instead of just resigning to be a reclusive drug addict"?
      As they say, "Well thats easy for you to say."
      Also of note: "So I made a big mistake, try to see it once my way... ...If I would, could you?" Obviously from the classic AIC "Would?"
      It's very easy from the outside to look back on someone else's poor choices and say what we think they should've done instead. Mental illness, drug addiction, grief and despair over loss of a loved one, none of these are kind mistresses. And Layne had a full plate of all of them. It's not like he just flippantly chose to find his life to be unbearable.
      It shouldn't need saying that the very nature of enduring addiction and severe mental illness is such that it makes it difficult for the afflicted to choose to get help and actually manage to persist through multiple failed attempts to get better.

      @unknown user Funny he would have no teeth. Lots of people have fake teeth, like half the NHL. Implants were new back then and expensive or but the guy was a millionaire whose mother managed his funds. So its not like he couldn't afford it.Or had a bridge or dentures if he was thrifty. He more or less didn't give a shit and that's more troubling than anything. That as a front man of a rock band his look was so important for a long time. He looked like my grandpa in that picture and was all of 31 in that picture almost 7 years younger than I am now that's so young. What a fucking tragedy, it would have made me want to cry seeing him like that especially as someone who's been down that road.

    • @sc12100
      @sc12100 4 роки тому +11

      The REAL reason Layne used more and more electronic effects on his vocals during their last recordings was because he hardly had any vocals left in him. He knew, and everyone else knew it was due to the heavy drug use and it wasn't gonna get any better. JC even admitted in later interviews that he knew this was the beginning of the end. Im mean come on - as great as the unplugged was, everyone knows we weren't listening to the same Staley that we all knew from the early 90s. And I say that not in criticism, but it's just a fact.
      Another fact that supports this is that he Layne frequently criticized his own vocal tracks during interviews and knew he didn't have that same bark that he used to. Im paraphrasing here but in one interview he basically said he thought he sounded like shit on one of the later albums. This interview was in the mid-late 90s.
      Now my belief is that the heavy vocal editing came from a place of insecurity and not artistic expression.

    • @sc12100
      @sc12100 4 роки тому +7

      @@83reggieT I really doubt he was a millionaire. They were successful in the early 90s and had great albums, but the real money comes from touring and Layne caused a lot of problems when it came to fulfilling tours and you probably already know this.
      The band paid his mother (after his death) around $300k for his whole share share/percentage and rights from being in the band so that AIC can move forward without him - this was told my Jerry himself.
      AIC is one of my favorite bands of all time. I have all their albums. But they're a classic example of bands that move one step forward, then two steps backwards - meaning their success always came with a cost.

    • @sc12100
      @sc12100 4 роки тому +4

      @unknown user I agree. I commented earlier and I believe all that editing came from trying to put a band aid over bad vocals. He didn't have it later on and he was trying to do anything to make it sound like he had no health issues.

    I was there... When the change occurred. I watched grunge spark into existence on a mountain of failed 80's band cd's.. I was shooting dope as well.. So the music.. So relatable. So meaningful. Getting fixed every day at the cemetary with my cd walkman. RHCP just came out with blood sugar sex magic. Nirvana followed suit. Smashing Pumpkins, gish. Soundgarden. The first NIN. Pearl Jam.. Etc. Fast forward a few years.. Lots of dead junky musicians.. But when Layne died.. It was difficult. I felt like I lost a brother. Like a kindred spirit. It was us.. The first generation of the heroin rebirth in the united states. Like Layne said.. The stoners, junkies and freaks... And then it was over. Leaving the life.. It was like getting stabbed in the heart. Dope was my everything.. The music was my fuel.. But life does go on. Even for a junky... It's been 11 years now, since I shot mt last speedball. My habit existed, flourished and ended before the Millenials turned the whole scene into a death circus and the fentanyl zombies it's created are completely alien to what the scene was about in the early nineties. So here I am, all these years later. Fat and happy for the most part and trying my best to aquire my piece of the American dream. The life I use to live an ever fading and distant memory.. But through it all there is one thing that never changes.. The music. Alice in Chains... Still playing loud as fuck through (name your device). Just like it's been since the beginning. Just like it always will be.... Long live Generation X. All of us, with wings.

      100%.
      Its so hard to watch a friend destroy themself, and so incredibly hard to figure out how to approach 'saving' them.
      Its pretty easy to imagine being is his position. Your friend has been spiraling for years. Look at Layne in these pics. He's always been a skinny guy but it's clear that this is a bit different than that. No teeth? We all know what he was going through.
      You see him in his natural state of happiness. Doing what he truly loves. Creating music. He's in the moment. Smiling. Having fun. Interacting.
      Then the beast of addiction rears its head and he wants to go get high. You know this is it. He's going to die soon. Of course you yell at him. You've done everything else.

      And it's probably bullshit. First of all, it's from an outsider's perspective so it's subjective. People quote it as gospel even though it's complete conjecture. Secondly, the quote was from David Jerden who benefited greatly from his work with Alice who then turned around and blabbed to the press after the recording session went to shit. Another take on the recording session comes from Susan Silver who said: “I’m sickened by the fact that Dave would try and lay blame on everyone around him for something that he was so clearly responsible for. All this from a professional who has received many benefits from his previous association with Alice in Chains. He should be ashamed - his lack of respect is disgraceful.”

The reason this music was so big back in the 90s was because it was music with some meat and potatoes in a time when music really had no substances to it. This music had hair on the balls, if you get what I am saying. This was such a great time in my life and the music is still with me every day. It will never die. Very true! I will say that I don’t even recall Hole doing unplugged though lol. I am not sure if I fully recall STP doing it either, but it sounds more likely that I have heard that.
      I’m 46 years old now and memory is starting to fade, unfortunately.
      Whenever I listen to these tunes from back in the day though, I can still instantly put myself back into my young body. Music is actually one of the closest parts of our “soul”/our brain that is the last to fade… I learned that by watching some Alzheimer’s videos, where people who were pretty much gone would instantly be so moved by music from their lifetime that they were connected to.
      It always makes me feel really old listening to 90s music with how much time has passed and it honestly makes me feel like it was a different life from a lifetime ago. It is getting harder to accept that it was actually me that lived through that era, and not someone else that I’ve read about.
      I feel very fortunate to have worked in the music industry for a few years there from 1999 to 2003, but I was laid off when the industry imploded because of piracy. That was the last era of good music, and I am so lucky that I got to go to an absolute shitload of shows, for free to boot, with so many amazing memories and feelings with each show I attended. I was finally able to go see Pearl Jam and rage against the machine, and Radiohead, etc etc…
      I feel bad for kids today with such terrible shallow music that I honestly don’t even really consider to be legitimate music.

Hole played a version of Nirvana's You Know You're Right in their show, which was also very cool. All the music I love is pre 2000, I can think of very few bands that interest me after then. Even referring to a 'band' seems old fashioned these days hahaha. I don't 'get' most of what comes out these days. An ex-stripper 'rapping' about her saturated cat (WAP!) is what kids are into now. Add the sickness and damage, Layne was disabled from it not even able to play or sing. Sad existence when one tries and they lose control of their bodily functions, get violently ill, it’s like possession. He wanted free of it but it done had his grips on him and the damage was definitely done. Perhaps if she didn't die he would have lasted a few more years but the outcome would have been the same. Still a tragic loss

      I totally agree. Although I think he did love her deeply and missed her, I think he used her death more as an excuse to throw in the towel. He blamed her for a lot of things when he was alive too. I think Layne was just hurting, exhausted, and done.

    So... I'm pretty sure his last-last recording was with Tom Morello for the "Another Brick in the Wall" cover for "Class of '99", and was also used for the movie 'The Faculty'. They had to sample the "S" sounds because he lost all his teeth and had a super discernable lisp. But "Died" has been one of my favorites since Music Bank came out. But yeah, this is his last one with AIC.

      Think you are right, too. I heard some say they didn't like Layne's voice on ABITW, but I really like it. He sings different in other songs and always like his voice - example, "IT's coming after". Even on "Am I inside" -- love how he can sing that song and then be the same person singing MITB.

    Get Born Again truly is classic AIC. Disturbing to see these pictures of Layne at that point. He was 86 lbs at the time of his death. I'm sure it was pretty gruesome. RIP.

    It makes me feel sad that Jerry yelled at Layne for bailing. When your addiction gets to that stage, it ends up taking priority in your life.

      that's true..ive been there. thankfully so far ive made it out alive. Being an addict sucks..its NOT a choice

      I can understand why. Layne was Jerry's idol. Jerry must have been outraged that Layne would disappoint him like that and I'm sure it really hurt, too
