I lost the love of my life to a primary brain tumor at 30. I can sympathize. A photograph can only capture a split second. But what a second that can be. As long as we remember, a second can last a lifetime.

My husband and I have been together 32 years this coming June 1. Even though it wasn’t a legally recognized marriage at the time we had our “Holy Union”, I thought at the time that the name of the ceremony was a term our community was using because we could not get Married”. then after the Supreme court gave us the right to marry we went to the Justice of the Peace in Texas to find out that “Holy Union” was what was actually on the real marriage licenses. We were nervous about how we would be treated. Not one person at the court house showed even slightest bit of disapproval. Everyone there all strangers to us, showed us love, acceptance and excitement for our good fortune. Even strangers on the street were congratulating us when they saw us taking pictures outside the court house holding up or marriage license. Nothing and no-one did anything to try and hurt us in any way that day. The judge even told us about the couples who had been together for more than 60 years before they could legally marry.
I am sorry for your loss, but still happy you were able to marry before death temporarily separated you. Our vows did not include the words ‘till death do us part. They were replaced with “for all time.” We believe that we will be reunited after we both finally leave this world. As I share in your belief that the two of you will also be reunited.
      God bless you both.
      With love,
      Mack and Paul

One thing i will never understand is how someone can see two humans happy, in love, and just wanting to be together-regardless of who those two are, gay, straight, and everything in between and not feel joy for them and feel hatred is beyond me!
When i see photos like this, all i can do is smile!

Born in 1933, I was in my prime in the 1950s, and the couples pictured from that time in the slacks and shirts of the period made my heart ache for the days when I myself fell in love. The beautiful images give the lie to the terrible oppression surrounding us at that time. Against all the odds, my partner and I spent fifty years together in a happy and successful relationship blessed by a civil partnership as things improved and we were accepted as a couple able to live our lives in peace. The young men in the images capture a tender beauty which is precious and heartrending to me.

We just love seeing others who are in or have been in decades' long marriages, whether recognized or not... they were and are marriages.
My husband and I just celebrated 30 years together and this summer, will be 15 years legally married.
There is no other life either of us wish for. We truly are blessed to have found each other, even if at an older age.
While all the sad and negative people try to extinguish the love in our amazing community, they fail at every attempt. They also reveal how utterly sad THEY truly are.
Congrats to all who have found love, because there truly is NOTHING on this planet more wonderful and beautiful than being in love.
Now... someone please pass me a tissue!

These photographs are beautiful. I watch as many videos like this as I can find. I'm searching for my Uncle Bob. After he got out of the Navy following World War II he became a merchant marine and was stationed and lived the majority of his adult life in San Francisco. We know so little of his life in California. There was always suspicion he was gay but you just didn't talk about such things in "polite" society back then. He died just before Christmas in 1980, diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 55. He left California and came home to die. But, many of us believe he was an early victim of AIDS. He had lesions on his body that now appear to be carposi sarcoma. Toward the end he also lost his vision and suffered from senility. At the time the doctors just put it down as a secondary infections that his body couldn't fight off. He never spoke of his life, his loves, or his adventures. He only came home once per year to visit and attend a family reunion and for the most part just sat by himself watching us kids play. He never married or ever spoke of a girlfriend. I so want to know more about him and keep his memory alive. Thank you for these images. I hope my Uncle Bob had a good life, surrounded by friends and had someone who loved him.

      @kycowboys 3 роки тому +38

@@gwenstaff Toto, it's easy to play Monday morning quarterback, especially if you're not old enough to have a reference point in the conversation. He didn't like sharing information about his personal life, only came home to visit once every year or so, and wouldn't sit still for a question and answer session.
Being gay back in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and even 90's, wasn't as easy as it is now. There wasn't any common acceptance. Being gay wasn't something you discussed openly, especially with your family. Parents didn't talk about their gay, or suspected gay, relatives to their kids. EVERYTHING was keep secret and in the closet. It was the original "Don't ask! Don't tell!" A gay uncle was a "confirmed bachelor" who just hadn't found the right woman or was a playboy in theory. A lesbian aunt was just a "spinster" who happened to share her house with another "spinster," neither of which had found the right man or they were too bossy and independent to catch a man.
If you feel comfortable in your existence and your sexuality, then you should consider yourself very fortunate and thankful to all the gays, lesbians, and transgendered that came before you. They paved the way for you to be who you are or who you want to be. They're life was hard which allows our lives to be a little easier.

@@hughnini2167, thank you so much for replying! I'm planning a trip to San Francisco next year after the 1950 census is released in April 2022. I am hoping he's listed as well as where he lived. I plan to search county and city records to see if I can find him and hopefully find someone who remembers him. He died in his 50's and would be in his 90's now, so there's a very good chance that someone in their 70's or 80's might still be around who had some connection to him. I'm also looking into ways to search military archives for his WWII history as well as his Merchant Marine service. I'm a novice at all this searching but I keep learning. I'm going to keep moving forward until I know more about him so I can share his life with my family and they'll know Uncle Bob. He shouldn't just be a name associated with a picture. He has a story and I fully intend to tell it to the best of my ability.

I especially loved the music selection for the part of the video called The Kiss. It was from John Barry's score for the 1985 Best Picture, ''Out of Africa.'' When I first heard this score it was in stereophonic sound accompanying a Panavision film. After almost four decades, it still remains one of Hollywood's most romantic pieces of music and it PERFECTLY describes the love of these young men.

I have come to a beautiful conclusion watching these videos. If you want to reach imortallity just look for one simple and honest love. When you love, every tiny split second lasts an eternity. When you really love someone, every second second is nothing but bliss and perfection, because just by knowing the you breathe the same air as your loved one your soul gets filled with warmth. If you wish to live forever, look for and find your one true love. Then, when you have someone, you will see. Love is eternal. Love is able to extend every moment into ages of joy, carved forever on us like those sublime images are carved on stone with such perfection that even the most brutal soul puts down it's sword to admire such passive beauty. Love is all I crave for, simply for the joy of sharing my life with someone else. I am still a young gay, recently turned eighteen. I feel like the shy rose button, slowly openning to face the rising sun of life.

I had a very lonely isolated adolescence in complete denial I was gay even as my childhood infatuation with other boys evolved into sexual attraction because I grew up in a small rural community in which everyone believed gay people were all sexual perverts, predators and pedophiles. After several unfulfilling relationships with women in college I had my intimate experience with another man and discovered there was a huge secrete network of gay men that were decent normal people like anyone else. It came as a shock to me how much I had been lied to about gay people all my life by my parents, the Catholic church and society. With that realization of the truth all that fear, anxiety and loneness I had suffered for so many years instantly disappeared like a great weight off of my shoulders. It was truly a liberating life changing experience. I went on become part of a vibrant community of exceptionally kind, intelligent and talented peers I never dreamed could exist. My life story is much like the story of the ugly duckling that faced rejection and scorn yet went on to grow into a beautiful Swan. These old photos take me back to those crucial years of discovery and enlightenment in my life.

This was so well put together. It's amazing how someone was able to find all these photos!
I noticed too, that in those days, at least by these photos, that a lot of Gay men seemed to be with and/or seek out someone who kind of looks like them.
I don't know if that was just happenstance or on purpose.
it sure is different today. Perhaps as a community, we are much more open to other nationalities and races that depicted here. There were not interracial couples at all, which I found sad to see.

I was born in 1968. My babysitter who was also a friend of my parents had a brother named Joe. Every year my mom would get a Christmas card from “Joe and Walter”. My mom would always tell me “they’re roommates “. She later told me the truth after my own coming out and times had changed - you just didn’t admit that two same sex couples were in a committed relationship back in those days. Eventually about 30 or 40 years ago the Christmas cards just came from Joe and eventually stopped all together. I never met them but I want to say they were truly happy.

Those taken in the ‘secrecy’ of the photo booths were for me the most poignant - the faces showing the joy of being able to express albeit to an anonymous photographic machine what elsewhere needed to be very carefully concealed.

We also traveled a lot abroad to visit friends and made contact with some photo dealers in other countries. We also work directly with photo dealers in the US and go photography fairs. We also search online. Best of luck with your book. Let us know when it's out. There is a contact email on our website.
