I've got the SXT version and it's a great vehicle so far, very fun to drive. Also I'm 6' 6" and don't have any issues driving around, wouldn't want to be in the seat behind me but this is in the compact class.
Seriously? I'm 6'2 and I'm feeling uncomfortable sitting in the small cabin of these type of cars---Corolla, Dart, Focus, Civic, etc. The only one I think is quite roomy is Cruze but I don't like GM's cars.
I've had the 2.0 sxt automatic for a year now, and have to say for a college student that commutes filling my tank once a week for $23 pumping chevron plus every time sure kicks ass plus full coverage insurance is cheap on the vehicle and to top it all off i've had zero issues with it so far, so sure not the fastest or sportiest vehicle on the road, but for the price and reliability that i get out of it, i sure do love it.✌🏻️
I got 500 miles on my 3 week old Dart with 2.0 and 6 speed auto. This car rocks. Solid, quiet ride. Plenty of power, good MPG. At 85 mph you feel like you are gliding. Comfortable interior. People admire everywhere we go.
Test drove a 2013 Dart GT 2.4 6 speed in 2015. It was great, the clutch pedal had a different pivoting geometry than typical, but had great power, great shifter feel, great sounding exhaust note, with no droning, but they just used it to find out if I could drive manual, and was determined to get a 5 speed Renegade or Patriot (very slowly) off the lot, and they were all base models that at the very end I discovered all 3 were no a/c base models. They wanted almost double for the GT with 64,000 miles. The lil roadsters and sport coupes are cool, but a manual sedan something Dodge executed perfectly, even if it smelled like the fluid filled transmission mount was leaking on the exhaust, and made a squeak from quick lifts of the gas pedal while in gear, the price was still firm and required twice the down payment. The Renegade was a 4-door Fiat 500, but the Patriot was so dangerously underpowered, but I got to row it around within it's first 50 miles on the odometer.
I have a 2013 Dart 1.4T Limited. Great car. I average 31 mpg (heavy foot fyi) and this car is so much fun to drive. My friends love riding in my car. NY just had its first accumulating snowfall and with standard all seasons the car came with, the car rode nicely. I will still buy snow tires but I felt safe without them. I recommend this car to any guy and girl that needs one.
I got the SXT Rallye with the 2.4 Liter and with the Powertech automatic transmission and this is a wonderful combination. On the highway I get 36 mpg's and in town I get about 28. This is an awesome fun, sporty car, best in class in my opinion.
The sd card reader is actually something I wish I could see on more cars. I have an aftermarket head unit in my truck specifically for the sd card reader because it's easier and cheaper to have my music library on them than a usb stick or disks. It also leaves the usb port on the head unit open for charging or other usb low powered devices.
+hellcat1988 Finally someone who thinks SD card is not a bad idea :D. That's one point, also for example I have a lot of old small cards left from old digital cameras (2GB, 1GB, even less). I find them more convenient to use than a USB sticking out of the dash...
Anton Mihiș There's also the option of using old micro-sd cards out of old cell phones with an adapter. Nobody ever gives them much love but I can take music I'm listening to on my head unit in my car, put it in a phone or tablet, and plug into the aux jack or use the bluetooth connection of another car to bring my music with me. As long as I'm in my truck though, I don't have to worry about my phone's battery getting worn out faster than it would if I wasn't using it as a portable media player and having to charge it more. I also don't have my phone in easy reach that way, so I don't have to worry about it becoming a distraction if someone wants to text or call me. It's in my pocket so even if it goes of it wouldn't be worth the effort to dig out and my music wouldn't be interrupted. At the very least, it leaves my phone open for gps nav so I don't have to rely on an aftermarket head unit with a subscription based map update or something like that. I can see why I.O.S. users wouldn't want to take the chance with that, but I use android so...
+hellcat1988 I think they should put some kind of energy field that drains phones 1 minute after entering a car. We don't need more charging, we need LESS.
Very simply the best '13 Dart review on UA-cam. Fun to watch, very informative and thorough. I bought my Dart Rallye on my birthday (mid Feb) and I'm still watching reviews!
I have a 2016 SXT with the 2.4. Like it much better than the turbo. Added a rear sway bar & next size wider tires. Handles much better & still getting above 35 mph hwy.
My fiance just signed papers on one of these last night and took it home. Her first car she ever bought. and its brand new. Nice car. Lets face it. the days of V8 Darts are done. but these were made in the 60s as a dependable commuter.
honestly, this looks like a great commuter car for someone who wants a good handling car, looks great inside/out, and is different from a civic or corolla. i have a BMW 328I but i am trying to buy a commuter car and a Dodge Dart GT with the tigershark 2.4 seems like a good choice.
Exactly why I'm buying one. I drive 80 miles round trip to work but I don't want some frumpy gas sipper. I want something that looks nice, has great technology and isn't the same old Honda/Toyota. This fits the bill.
Everything about the Dart is of innovation. The customizable 7-inch TFT display, rain sensing wipers, LED taillamps, projector headlamps, intergrated dual exhaust, 8,4 inch touch screen display, premium audio with 10-speakers, SmartBeam HID Headlamps, Rear Cross Path Detection, Rear Park Assist, Blind Spot monitoring systems, ambient lighting, MultiAir, & MultiAir-II, & dual clutch, are just the many things that Toyota Corollas & Honda Civic simply does not have or ever made available. LOL!!!
I've got the 2.0L SXT automatic because I don't know how to drive manual (maybe I'll learn one day) and it's a fun little car! It's got great room for a compact; plenty of space for 4 regular sized adults. I don't have the navigation or bluetooth package but I have a Windows Phone and a Plantronics Legend for that so I don't really need it. I wanted the dual exhaust and the racetrack LED tailights but they were an afterthought... worst case scenario is I can add it aftermarket. This is a great alternative to the Toyotas and Hondas you see everywhere.
If you bought it new, you should've gotten a coupon in the mail to get the racetrack lights for $200 because Dodge has made the standard. I'd just call the dealer and ask anyway.
Figured I'd be nice and respond to you about my Dart. Have the Rallye 1.4 Turbo DDCT transmission. Love it. Picks up real quick, though there is a bit of throttle lag there are ways around it if I want to (see: GoPedal) Handling on corners is tight and enjoyable, never once have I felt I lost control taking a bend at 40-45. I've had the car since the end of February this year as a daily driver as an fyi. =) Feel free to ask any questions you want.
Question- When you dropped the throttle to illustrate the RPMs reaction, isn't the slow drop of rpms indicative of the dual dry clutch? This transmission does not actually disconnect power completely, like a traditional clutch. You experiment would be similar to letting off the throttle in a manual transmission without using a clutch. As a new Dart owner- I am not disagreeing with your take on responsiveness on the powertrain at all. The only aftermarket tuning stuff addresses the throttle.
I have been a fan of CNET since way back when back to the CNET Central TV show on CBS with Gina St. John (had a crush), Richard Hard and I do believe that Soledad O'Brien (also a crush) was on that to. At the time I was in college and now I'm have a daughter in college. So as I was looking at car reviews for a possible first cars for my daughter I came across this with Brian Cooley (I've followed him closely throughout the evolution of CNET). Well his demeanor and quirky humor as always been engaging and his cars review and especially the "Check the tech" were always so informative and entertaining. Looking back at this video and also years earlier for the M5 when I was considering that, his performance is some of the best in the business and I would still put him up against any social media reviewer today. I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering why those reviews stopped and has there been any consideration to bring them back? Much like "Fast Lane Daily", gone too soon. smh....
when Cooley is talking about the throttle response being null. I think he is forgetting that the motor is Turbocharged. Hence it makes sense that the RPM's still stayed in range due to the exhaust gas still spooling about. I'm sure the NA 2.4l motor will respond much better.
I've driven a Caliber with CVT & a Dart Rallye Turbo. No comparison. If you know how to drive it & keep the revs up there is almost no lag to speak of. The ride & handling are superior as well.
It's the 1.4 that sounds like that, I've got the fiat 500 with the naturally aspirated and that's just what it sounds like at idle (from every side but the back)
For those of you interested in the car but worried about the throttle response mentioned in this video know that there's a solution. Dodge Dart Madness offers a product called "Go Pedal" which plugs into the wires and offers several adjustable settings for the throttle. Users are reporting massive improvements on the throttle lag. It's totally plug and play and simple to install or remove. Or do what I'm doing and wait for the GT.
I think that the lift-lag when you let off the gas is a product of a cheap DCT. The mitsubishi EVO does the same thing. Let off the gas and it seems to just hold the rpms. You basically said it was a turd with the 1.4 and 160hp isn't much, especially coming from a company that offers a 470hp Hemi V8 in some of their cars (i know i know, "the 1.4 is a fiat engine," just seems funny coming from this company) but with that being said, i've driven small displacement turbo cars and they are a BLAST if you have the right trans. Now i heard that the 6spd was rubbish as well because the ratios are FUBAR, but i'd still love to try one of these in a manual. I was going to buy the new Volvo s60, but not before i test drive a few of these.
Perhaps, guess I just never heard that engine noise in any cars I've owned with the exception of my intrepid just before the chain inside snapped (which I admit was a much louder noise lol). With my history of Dodge cars (intrepid had 2 engine rebuilds and wanted a 3rd before I got rid of it), I'm shocked I even looked at this one.. but It's pretty sharp looking.. who knows...I got 2 years before I buy... there's time to watch how the Dart grows :)
Love the look of the car.. and up until I watched this video..thought perhaps this would be my next buy... but after hearing some points, and the sound of the engine. .not so sure..what's with that rattle sound when he had it running and explaining under the hood.. Thinking my search will go on...
I didn't think this power train was that bad when my brother and I test drove his but, from looking at the upload date of this video, it could've been an issue with an earlier production model.
You're obviously reserved when it comes to cars, thats the normal sound of the valve chatter of a chain driven engine and is nothing out of the ordinary, same sound my sportbike and sportcar make
Dodge needs to put the DART SRT4 on the road IMMEDIATELY. Until this car has a true top level trim, it won't steal attention from other cars in the price range - even though it has the best tech suite of all of them.
The Dodge GT is mouth watering, look at 2theredline's video on it. Listen to that exhaust sound. I'm not a dodge fan by anymeans, but I'd buy the GT in a heart-beat.
Honestly, I'd rather still have the srt-4. When it came out, It cost about the same as this new Dart thing, but I think it was a lot more fun to drive. The new dart just doesn't replace it in my opinion
I like how on all the youtube car reviews lately, actual driving of the car comes dead last. As if anything else about the car would matter on it's own. HELLO.
What a gorgeous and yet elegant car, it looks better than all of the next generation muscle car's. It won't out run my 2005 durango hemi limited tho : )
Completely agree. I'm already biased towards older cars and my uncle has a '70 Dart- love that car. Wish they wouldn't have revamped the Dart model name on this car. There's too much of a technology overload in these newer cars, no soul in them.
The regular 2016 Civic will have a 1.5 liter Turbo that has about 174HP, so close to the HP (184) and torque (174) of the 2.4L Tigershark.. Dodge Dart has competition now! And will likely weigh less, since the Dart weighs about 3,050 pounds. Then you have the unrevealed Si model and finally the type R! Moving to more expensive though more efficient cars, The 2016 Prius has more HP too (likely about 150HP) and will likely accelerate very quickly off the line thanks to the electric motors starting it off. Not to mention ~55-60MPG! 2016 Chevy Volt is fast too (150HP fully electric acceleration).
Problem is, a touch-screen takes your eyes off the road and demands concentration to operate. I'll take old-school manual controls that don't move or go away when you need them most.
How is a throttle blip for rev match on deceleration a problem?? @ 5:30 The smart does similar things, which I have heard many people complain about. To me, it doesn't make sense, because if you understand how a transmission works, and spend time learning how a car drives, you should be able to get the car to do what you want. Learn to do more than hold a steering wheel...
I looked at a Dart today. I walked away thinking, NEON all over again. Why? The sticker stated 19% parts from Mexico, transmission Italy, and engine USA. Now this turbo 1.4 is supposed to be an Italian mill. BUT, the hoses and imprints are all Chrysler. So is Chrysler using the blueprint of the Italian mill and making it themselves? Then when I got in the car and shut the door, the molding that houses the seat belt on the driver side, fell off. WTF. Has trouble written all over it
"The buttons on the far left" He says, like it's a bad thing it's on the steering wheel, y'know, the place where your hands typically are when you're driving?
Finally a new cnet car vid!!! They need to do more vids more often!!!!!! Great review but dodge and GM are sketchy companies that I don't trust! They have bad reliability and quality
It seems like they cut corners on this car. Looking at the commercial of this car the other night. It looked promising on paper. But they should have made this car with a V6 engine. And with all the electronics in the cars these days. Its best to keep it simple. We have laws of texting while driving, not paying attn while behind the wheel. especially in California. The touch screen doesn't help matters. But that's MHO :)
I would have much rather just had the Fiat this Dart is based on. The interior is stylish, but looks as cheap, even for the class. Love the underseat storage, but wonder if it affects the comfort of the seats. I was leery of CVT transmissions. Now that I own one, I'm leery of automated manuals. Only time will tell.
I'll be damned if they call the SRT-4 Dart, the Demon. You just never know. Sadly however, Chrysler has delayed the SRT-4 Dart due to them not being happy with the performance of the prototype car. So maybe we'll finally get one in 2015 or '16. Who knows?
I've got the SXT version and it's a great vehicle so far, very fun to drive. Also I'm 6' 6" and don't have any issues driving around, wouldn't want to be in the seat behind me but this is in the compact class.
6'3 and looking into mopping up one of these from the remaining inventory - thanks!
Seriously? I'm 6'2 and I'm feeling uncomfortable sitting in the small cabin of these type of cars---Corolla, Dart, Focus, Civic, etc. The only one I think is quite roomy is Cruze but I don't like GM's cars.
I keep my seat all the way back, I feel fine in it. For the compact class this is has the most room, check out edmunds space comparisons

The car is built where??? Toledo??? Try Belvidere, IL.
0:41 is wrong. This car is built in Belvidere, IL, not Toledo.
King Henry's nuts at that.
the smullgers box is sooo cute lol
I do like this car!
got that car in " true american blue" Love it
do you know these cars go really fast
So how much faster will the gt model be. 0-60?
i dont know it looks like a 2013 dodge neon. from exterior to interior, all the lines in design are like, its just a bit newer.
this car looks like a bean... a bean I wouldn't want to eat
I like very much the front!
You own manual or auto?
I looked at a Dart today. I walked away thinking, NEON all over again. Why? The sticker stated 19% parts from Mexico, transmission Italy, and engine USA. Now this turbo 1.4 is supposed to be an Italian mill. BUT, the hoses and imprints are all Chrysler. So is Chrysler using the blueprint of the Italian mill and making it themselves? Then when I got in the car and shut the door, the molding that houses the seat belt on the driver side, fell off. WTF. Has trouble written all over it
absolutely right. also his language and demo is so easy to understood about the vehicle. he could b the best competitor to TOPGEAR jeremy clarkson!
Agreed.
I'll wait for the dart SRT4 and try that with a six speed manual
Pickles, condoms and nuts make for a good conversation no matter the age.
"The buttons on the far left"
He says, like it's a bad thing it's on the steering wheel, y'know, the place where your hands typically are when you're driving?
Super hot car. Hey Honda and Toyota are you paying attention?
They joined the crowd that most car companies have done in the past decade.
that handbrake is up son 1:12
Hey how come i cant watch your video??! It says here "not available in your country." Im in canada!
Seems like someone is having a lonely night lol
Finally a new cnet car vid!!! They need to do more vids more often!!!!!! Great review but dodge and GM are sketchy companies that I don't trust! They have bad reliability and quality
That clicking sound? I noticed. I thought it must have been the direct injection system but these engines don't have that technology. Weird.
all good cars
they've got the 3.2 now but, I wouldn't adivse a v6 in this more likely a twin turbo I4
I want this car
Toilet paper, Brazilian nuts, Condoms, and a jar of Pickles.........
But that's MHO :)
yea, I say unisex but I have to get the upper tier version of the car just to feel safer lol I'm 6 feet and would this be too small for me
dude where are you going to find an interior that's as good as this for 15k
Weird sense of humor he has.... Not just condoms and pickles, but nuts too!
Being raised in the 50's & 60's I'm bemused at how testers nit pick cars. We never dreamed of cars with features of today.
on a ad i saw that the dart has 52MPG
is HD radio that common in cars that he seriously talks about it in every video
I would have much rather just had the Fiat this Dart is based on. The interior is stylish, but looks as cheap, even for the class. Love the underseat storage, but wonder if it affects the comfort of the seats. I was leery of CVT transmissions. Now that I own one, I'm leery of automated manuals. Only time will tell.
Toledo, Ohio? What is made there? The Dart is made in Belvidere, Illinois!
I'll be damned if they call the SRT-4 Dart, the Demon. You just never know.
Sadly however, Chrysler has delayed the SRT-4 Dart due to them not being happy with the performance of the prototype car. So maybe we'll finally get one in 2015 or '16. Who knows?
I'd use that SD card slot.
is it just me or was the old school dart the shit way cooler looking
they had the caliber between 05-11...
