  • Tennis! D&D-style dice combat! It's Wimbledungeons! After our Mario Tennis Aces inspired tabletop game in Show of the Weekend, we asked if you could come up with your own versions for us to play, and you did! Our DM Johnny Chiodini of Eurogamer picked out this one by Jonathon Astles!
    Cheers to all who sent in their excellent games, and hope you enjoy this one as much as we did (rules can be found below!).

    Rules here so you can try it yourself:
    ****Wimbledungeons****
    ***by Jonathon Astles***
    Players select which type of shot they will play, with more difficult shots requiring a higher roll to succeed. When returning a shot, players must beat the difficulty threshold for their opponent's shot added to the shot they have selected.
    Shots Difficulty threshold
    Straight 3
    Topspin 5
    Slice 8
    Dropshot 10
    When serving, the server can decide how risky to play their serve (i.e. how fast/close to the net). As such they can determine any skill threshold between 5 and 10. Service alternates between games as for normal tennis or for a single game service alternates between shots. Unlike regular tennis, players are not given a second serve.
    Standard Tennis scoring applies with 40-40 leading to Deuce, advantage etc.
    Doubles can be played. Rules apply as for singles plus the player returning the shot chooses which opponent to aim for.
    An example section of a game goes as follows:
    Player 1 serves choosing a serve difficulty of 8. They roll a 16 and therefore succeed. Player 2 must now return and chooses to return it straight, they must now roll at least an 11 (serve=8 plus straight return=3). They roll a 15 and therefore succeed. Player 1 must now return and chooses to give it topspin. They must now roll 8 (Straight=3 plus topspin return=5). They roll a 7 and lose the point. Game is now 15-0 to player 2.
    Player 2 serves at 5. Rolls a 4, losing the point. The game is now 15-15.
    Player 1 serves again at 6. Succeeds by rolling 9. Player 2 returns with a dropshot so must roll at least 16 (serve=6 plus dropshot return=10). They roll an 18. Player 1 returns with a slice and must roll at least 18 (dropshot=10 plus slice return=8). They roll a 7 and lose the point. Game is now 30-15 to player 2.
    Etc.
    For more advanced rules:
    Rackets have a point of damage added if a player rolls a 5 or less. If a critical failure is rolled (i.e. 1) then two points of damage are added. After three points of damage a racket breaks and that player loses the point. A new racket is then given to the player and the game continues.
    Any roll above 15 gives the player a point of power. A critical success (i.e. 20) gives the player two points of power. Power can be spent to either reduce the threshold of your return by 5 (Calm in the Storm) or increase the threshold of opponents return by 5 (Press the Advantage). Reducing the threshold can be used even if the threshold has been raised by the use of power. Increasing the threshold is capped at 20. i.e. a natural 20 will still always return a shot. Power is gained even if the player doesn’t return the shot. I.e. rolls a 16 against an 18

    I actually cannot believe you guys played my game and seemed to enjoy it! This, plus all the comments being super nice, has more than made my day. More like made my month! I totally agree with the changes you guys made (stopping the power creep was a great move by Johnny) but Luke was right, with the way you guys played the game, the numbers were a little off. You've probably seen some of the comments saying you played it wrong but I actually think the way you guys played it is great! (with the numbers scaled so that rallies can last a little longer). I'd chalk it up to a combination of me explaining poorly and Johnny's subsoncious inspiration. I didn't have much time to playtest it before I sent it in or get anyone to check the explanation. Hence why the first of the advanced rules makes absolutely no sense. As such, having watched you guys and played it a little myself I've made some adjusted rules (both for my original idea and the escalation version). If anyone wants a copy, feel free to hit me up. Thank you all so much for being the awesome team (and community) that you are!

      you should make the first serve a free shot if they miss there roll, as in tennis that's considered a fault but if they miss there roll again they loss the points and that's a double-fault in tennis.
      just some helpful advice to try to make it more fun

      Heres a suggestion for a stats/character creation system:
      You have 3 stats: Dexterity, Strength, and Technique
      You can take up to 2 from each and add it to another stat.
      You can increase a stat to a maximum of +3
      Dexterity decreases the threshold to return a shot
      Strength gives an additional bonus to the return threshold
      Technique increases the affect of a power point, e.g. a +3 to technique means that you can increase or decrease the threshold by 8
      Any leftover points can be put into specialty shots. This decreases the threshold you have to return with when you use those shots. You cannot decrease the additional threshold to hit past 2. Cannot be applied to serves.
      Basically proficiency.
      Finally, an additional suggestion: Edge shots. You roll with disadvantage when you make the shot, but your opponent also rolls with disadvantage when returning.
      Also, more of an adjustment to match tennis rules, you have two chances to make the serve. (Fault, double fault)
      Have fun!

      I like the idea of this game, but it's not one that I imagine I'd play for very long. Mathematically (cumulative rules or otherwise), the base rules always favor using caution and lowering your number as much as possible. Even with the advanced rules, I can't think of a circumstance in which it is favorable in the long term to pick any move other than Straight. I have proposed another version of this game in another post, but it's a lot harder to keep track of, so I would be interested to see a fixed version of this game.

    • @Dazed247

      Kobo I really like these for a more advanced version of the game, great rules to make the game a little more technical and give it some good rpg elements. I like the balancing as well, would need playtesting obviously but seems nicely done. Definitely the kind of thing I'd put in as optional rules for more advanced players!

      Nice idea. I like the idea of a Longsword or Bastard Sword duel without the baggage of a full character sheet.
      3 - Thrust
      5 - Slash
      8 - Cut
      10 - END HIM RIGHTLY
      This is fine for base rules, but unfortunately base rules lend themselves strongly to always taking the lowest option, because your decision in difficulty is *always* more likely to affect you (given you roll first) then your opponent. The rules need to add some kind of risk/reward mechanic if you want the players to do anything else. I propose a split between cumulative tallies and difficulty, such as:
      Difficulty / Escalation Factor
      2 / 1 - Thrust
      4 / 2 - Slash
      7 / 3 - Cut
      9 / 4 - END HIM RIGHTLY
      Each player has their own Escalation Tally. The initiator starts with a tally of 1, and their opponent starts with a tally of 0.
      Initiator goes first.
      On your turn, add your Escalation Tally to the Difficulty of the move your opponent last did. If you have not yet acted, this is 0. Then, add the Difficulty of the move you wish to do. Roll a d20. If you roll under, your blood is drawn and you lose the round. Otherwise, add the Escalation Factor of your chosen attack to your opponent's Escalation Tally.
      Duels aren't typically a long number of rounds, so it'll make a much shorter, more compact game.

      Fruitface Jennings I love this so much. A very serious duel two men slashing and thrusting with all their might, and in one desperate manuever, the knight backs off takes 30 seconds of value able time while his oponent charges sword in hand, to unscrew his pommel and flings it to END HIS OPPONENT RIGHTLY and he shall for the pommel is mightier than the sword

    You misunderstood the rules guys, you have to beat the number comprised of the shot that the other player shot at you and the number that you wanna shoot back. if you succeed, the other player will have to beat only the shot number that you shot at them and the number they wanna shoot back, all the previous numbers go null. Otherwise its just impossible after a few turns like it happened in the video XD

    This gave me inspiration on what to make the boss fight as the DM in the next D&D session that I'm doing, it's similar, but I spread this idea out to volleyball, with four player teams. The idea is four players are one side, while the dungeon master controls dour NPC players, and whenever the ball goes over the net everyone has to roll initiative to see who gets the ball. Next up is the return ball mechanic, it's the same as to how it is in the tennis game, but there is the pass mechanic, where whoever goes to hit the ball has the option to "pass" the ball to another player if they roll over a ten, if the pass is successful it negates the escalation, and allows the next player to make the shot as if they were serving the ball. Furthermore, this works a spike as well, since characters who are in the back are at a disadvantage to make a spike shot, and have to roll higher on difficulty, whereas players in front have an advantage to spike, and have a lower difficulty threshold to make the shot. Furthermore, I was considering about adding powers and buffs into this, for instance, a character who activates a barbarian rage in game will add 3 difficult threshold to ever returning shot and gain advantage, whereas a rogue/class with high dexterity (not sure of an actual ability to incorporate) but they act as a counter to barbarian can then reduce the difficulty of shots because they react, and return at a higher skill level for a short period of time. A bard is able to act as control on the field and activate select canthrips that'll affect the difficulty threshold of shots for either team. Lastly, a more harsh mechanic I thought off, is the nat 20. My idea here is that if the some rolls a 20, then there is a 50% chance that it would be overcast, and the ball will be hit out of bounds. Since players can't all be expert players these things are bound to happen, so the person who is hitting the ball has to make a saving throw greater than 10 in order to to keep from knocking the ball out of bounds. I just love thinking about this and I am turning my D&D group into an intense sports anime--

    Awesome job on the tennis rules, Jonathan. Also, have to say my inner min-maxer is screaming at Luke for using a powerpoint to reduce his roll by 5 then increasing it by 10. Just increase by 5 and use that power point to make life more difficult for Ellen!

    That was way more entertaining than it had any right to be! Really cool and fun tabletop tennis game! There should be an extra "volley" shot that should be the most difficult but if successful, makes it tough to return, for the classic "serve and volley" style players of yesteryear. She did seem to hit the space bar, but there’s usually a blur of numbers before the new value appears. I’d chalk it up as unintentional, like Johnny’s math error in the final game where he said that Luke needed a 12 when he only needed a 10 (he flubbed it anyway). Having that number on the screen while the actual number to beat was only spoken threw me several times, too.
      Either way, this was entertaining as heck, and I don’t even like tennis. As heck, I say.

    You guys seem to shift between using the last person's roll as the base for the new DC and using the last person's DC to determine the new DC, when it should always be the latter (Eg. if Luke has a DC of 12 and rolls a 15, and Ellen returns with a slice, she needs to beat a 15, not an 18). Loved the video though, this game is really well made for something so simple and you guys are hilarious as always!

  • @redsky5440
    @redsky5440 6 років тому +3

    The rules say the returns are based on type of shot selected by opponent not on the dice roll like you guys played. It still works but you made it a lot more rng based.

    • @AjesDH82
      @AjesDH82 6 років тому

      It seems like they did play it correctly for the most part, but they did at times wrongly work of the Dice rolls instead of the Difficulty level of the current shot/return.

    • @mmurphman87
      @mmurphman87 6 років тому

      Anders Hansen No they were not supposed to keep adding to the shot count. Basically if I choose a 5 to serve then you chose a straight shot (3) to return, then you have to beat an 8, but when it’s my turn, I only have to beat your shot (3) plus my shot, say top spin (5) so I only have to beat an 8. They just kept adding it up which was not correct. It made it go by a lot faster doing it that way, but it wasn’t correct.

    • @AjesDH82
      @AjesDH82 6 років тому

      Oh, you're right, it wasn't suppose to keep escalating. OK, well then it would seem they played it, with morphed rules. Also

  • @JosephGorndt
    @JosephGorndt 6 років тому

    Man, this game is really surprisingly well balanced. I thought it would escalate too quickly when I heard the rules, but the power points were abundant enough to keep the pace right where it should be. That two power point limit really incentivizes spending the points, too. I especially like how serving seems to be about as big an advantage as it is in the real game.

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion 6 років тому

      If you read the rules you would see that they played it wrong, the serve only matters for the first returning shot and not as the base for the entire point. The rules are made so you could potentially have longer duels for one point like in normal tennis, but the way they are playing it excludes those duels, unless they are both really lucky.

  • @TheEvilAspirin

    Seems to me like it'd make more sense if it was based on your opponents shot selection.
    So to start if you serve with a 8, then the opponent would choose a shot difficulty say Topspin (+5) so would require 13. If it goes over then the original server would need 5 (the opponents previous shot choice) + their next choice of shot, say Dropshot (+10) making it a 15 required. If that goes over then the opponent would need 10 + their next shot. This would make it so that rallies actually occur and the choice of a harder shot has purpose.
    I'm sure that's what the guy who came up with the rules intended.
