There was a time when liberals and conservatives agreed that the truth was important, no matter how painful. They just had different ideas on what they should do about things. Ai is a reflection of people, and we need to be very careful which people influence AI. It needs to be neutral but at the same time protect everyone's basic rights.

Google is trying to push these models out at breakneck speed and they largely skipped the vetting process. Yes they overcompensated from earlier failings and the bias (which can't be fully eliminated) has swung too far in the other direction.

Deep Neural Networks are often trained on historical datasets. Such datasets are the truth but they do reflect cultural biases. Sometimes the truth is uncomfortable. Polite adults know when to be discrete. Should trained Neural Networks learn to discrete as well?

Who should be the "arbiter of truth"? Even the scientific community doesn't pretend to detain any absolute truth. They only propose the best current explanations based on the available evidence. That's what AI companies should aim for as that wouldn't guaranty that it's the absolute truth, but at least it would be rational.
This idea to put some people in charge of deciding the unquestionable truth is absurd and dangerous.
AI should also aspire to provide the best answer(s) based on a defined context. Even if you ask a non-political correct question! It shouldn't try to answer the best it can based on the currently available scientific evidence (not based on religious or ideological bias).

Ok, I’m getting sick and tired of this argument about justifying Google actions because “in the past they were doing the opposite kind of bias”. The 2 issues can’t be compared. One thing is to provide the most STATISTICALLY prevalent scenario, and another is to provide point black unreal and false information, even worse, HISTORICALLY inaccurate information.
In a white majority country, IT IS true that the large majority of doctors, lawyers, financiers, engineers ARE white males. So even if they wanted to bring more diversity and “equity” to those images, showing white doctors is STILL a reality. Bias or not bias, it’s an accurate portrait.
But showing black founding fathers, Chinese nazi soldiers, black Vikings, etc. is not about “fair or inclusive portrayal “. It’s about fake agenda and historical distortion.
