Meet Séarlait, who, after 12 years living and working overseas, has returned to Ireland, and chosen to spend the last two weeks volunteering at Mossy Bottom, my homestead in rural County Sligo. Did her experience here live up to expectations? Would she recommend volunteering to others? And what are her hopes and plans for the future?

What a great conversation, between 2 people who value similar things. I'm 73 and find great comfort in the fact that young people are still thinking deeply about what they want from their life. That's what will save us.

I think that when most people lived an agricultural lifestyle, those who were introverts were happier and stood out less to others. When the masses moved to cities and entertainment and social life became more prominent, extroverts became happier, but introverts less so.
Kudos to you, Daniel, for providing this opportunity for people, mostly young people probably, to see what an agricultural lifestyle would be like. In this day and age, because of the internet, it is possible for people to have a homestead exclusively or a job and a homestead. I think there are more people who see the importance of having balance in their lives and can invent a hybrid lifestyle that suits them better. And Kudos to the people who volunteer on homesteads like yours to open their minds, their options, and test their mettle. It’s a win-win opportunity! 👍

Reality: Daniel lives offsite with his partner and their child. The volunteers spend most of their time on their own, as the owners are rarely on the farm, contrary to the impression(s) given in these videos. The giveaway for me was when he said he likes to go for a good run after a day of hard work. We tend to a 3 acre garden. I can assure you that there has never been a thought of doing anything other than resting after a full day of labour on our set up.

I absolutelly loooove her accent. I was wondering what the average day of a volunteer at your place would look like. I thought it was all work no play from dusk till dawn. 🙂 I first went to Ireland as a volunteer when I was 18 (loooong before workaway) and I had the best time. People who expect to be payed for the work done, don't understand what volunteering is all about. You don't do volunteering to pay your bills. You do volunteering for new experiences, learning new skills, learning about different cultures, lifestyles, for the change of the environment, etc. I recently considered volunteering again, but I had an eye on one volunteering position in Portugal that fell through and then Covid came and I never went back to that. Anyways, I must tell you that watching your videos has made me more appreciative of the land we have and I have tackled many gardening projects that in the past just seemed too overwhelming (so I just ignored them). I'd love to hear stories from other volunteers as well. Plus would love to meet your partner. I know you said somewhere that she's camera shy and I completly understand and respect that, but we (on this side of our computers) are curious people. 🙂🙂🙂

Hi Daniel, I loved this video, My late husband and I used to do what you are doing on the road to Streedagh strand. I am 73 now and living in Devon. I really miss that life and really had a connection to Ireland (the usual Irish great granny thing) Our cottage was much like yours and we grew all the veg. I was lucky my husband was a builder!!
My advice to your volunteer is follow your dreams and don't let the grass grow under your feet, (time is short) anything is possible you just need to want it enough. I wish I was still there. All the best to her on her journey! Good lock (as they say in Sligo)

Very interesting chat dear mossyman, I was glued to the conversation. Truly she is a wonderful girl, and the elephant in the room is obvious but appart from all that there were salient points you both brought out that anyone serious about freeing themselves from working for the banks, (mort.guage), and living & loving a natural rural lifestyle might consider very carefully.
22 years ago we came here getting this property in the mtns for relatively pennies, we were fortunate. You say it's hard work, for some it might be, I became a builder of thatched houses so I took it in my stride transforming our 30's Devalera cottage into a 5 bedroom with canadian timber frame out buildings & stone workshop, polytunnels, gardens, stone walls etc, but it still took 8 years to get the overall property features to a point I could call 'finnished' - but it's never finnished and that a good thing to, always more to do! I would say it can be hard but normally just slow and steady, especially if you do the work alone, all things in good time and as you say, prioritzing, doing something everyday it all gets done, eventually.
Her hot tub idea, gravity heated by a small wood burning outdoor stove, is one I've had for a couple of decades and still haven't done it. 🙄😂 The joy is it's all year round and a bath, actually, changing the water frequently. Even better would be one elevated! Such a joy especially in the winter snow. . . memories of hot springs in B.C. Canada mtn living.
I do so hope she returns and the angel of deep affection touches your hearts, what a gift that would be, even just dear freinds which is what we have, even for a householder bhakta like me being married really saved my life, what a learning curve, not always fun as the ego can often persist but ultimately full of joy.
    Blessings from Tipp

A thoughtful, lovely chat. I agree that too many people (especially Americans) focus on making money, money, and more money. I retired early so I could spend time creating an urban garden, finish restoring my 90-year old house, and indulge my other creative passions. It still shocks me when people say, "Oh, you should start a business, or do this investment thing that takes lots of time, or build a rental house in your garden, so you can make more money. Bleh. Hard to believe you have been at Mossy Bottom for six years, Daniel! I am convinced it is exactly where you are supposed to be. Cheers.

Easy there with the anti americanism you two. As if people in other countries aren't as money seeking as Americans. @@Donneczka1 Do you know ALL 330 MILLION Americans? I think not. Of all the Americans in my circle...friends, family and co-workers---NONE are like you just described. In the big cities like New York, Los Angeles, etc...you will find many people obsessed with money. However, this country is HUGE. And all across this country you will find millions of people living on small holdings, who are VERY MUCH into self-development, contentment, sustainable living--just like Daniel. You can't paint an entire large country with a large, diverse population with your same, broad brush! Not only is it an unfair judgment--it is totally based on ignorance. Be careful about incorrectly believing in stereotypes. You are not only wrong--but you've made yourself look foolish from lack of knowledge.

Love your videos and the young lady in this one is very sympathetic.
The only point I always am bewildered is, when it comes to age.
Why on heavens sake do you always talk about young people?
Normally people ( here in Germany) do their job until 66 or 67 and longer if the pension is low.
And if they have such a homestead like mossy bottom, what do you think, when will they be forced to leave it because they are old?
To my opinion there are things young people can do better then older ones but there are a lot of things where it goes the other way round. I really believe that young and old can learn form one another if they want to.
Everyone starting a project like your must be someone who loves learning and who can do without gracious living as people are used to in big cities. But that’s nothing about age.

This young lady has such a nerve to speak up from where she is right now. and others stories are giving such an uplift to continue breaking my own traps and taking me out of my own stresses... great story, amazing moss and amazing Daniel... God Bless )))

Plantain, broad leaf or small... add a few leaves to your salads often, keep those little blighters at bay. A Complex Vit B may help as well. I hope this lady find the best life for her. Its a brand new world!🥳

Fantastic idea to have a volunteer speak of their experience. I hope it captures more people's attention and encourages more volunteer travel. I loved how she called your homestead your kingdom.... SO true - looks like it...well ok maybe slightly more Mossy's Kingdom

Thank you for the interview of Searlait. It's inspiring to see people living to the full -- trying things, exploring ideas & options, gradually aligning their external lives to be more compatible with their internal values, personality, and desires.

I think the girls best course of action would maybe be to work for like a gardening centre or some crop growers business maybe to get the long term experience while also being paid and saving up then find her own little plot and put the experience to good use maybe get a friend to help build her a little cabin etc. Start small and grow the land into something she can handle and be happy with.

Daniel, Thank you - a very interesting chat today.
Volunteering is something you can't avoid when you retire (in the normal sense) and it's a time when you get the freedom to choose anything in the world, literally (as most things can be achieved with very little money if you think about options for long enough).
What you have is valuable as a taster - so much so I'm quite surprised that you don't charge the volunteers to stay with you!
What you've achieved in just a few years is definitely inspiring. I love it. x

Buy cedar oil online... mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of the oil with water and 0.25 cup plain witchhazel in a large spray bottle. Shake before each use and spray yourself down. Very pleasant, you'll smell like a cedar chest and the midges will keep their distance... safe for face and for animals, too!
