- In 2020, Reverb released a feature-length documentary called 'The Pedal Movie'. To celebrate this event, several Pedal companies joined forces to create some limited edition pedals...this one is the result of an "Unholy Union" between Death By Audio and Earthquaker Devices; the Time Shadows.
Time Shadows features two effect modes, with each algorithm having been designed by their respective companies, and are selectable via the toggle switch. Both modes are extremely imaginative, experimental, unusual, and unique takes on ambient, filtered delay, that almost defy definition!
They only made 1,000 of these, so they can be pretty hard to find and rather expensive, too. I just wish I'd been able to grab one when they first came out...or that they'd just reissue the damn thing. 😒

Great Demo. The sounds are truly special. Did you end up getting close with some custom patches on a zoom pedal?

Not something I'd see myself ever using, but I totally get wanting to own one 😄 I grabbed a Bliss Factory at the time, and I rarely actually use anything beyond the standard Fuzz Factory features

For me the magic happens in this pedal when the knobs are turned, shame there is no expression input to do that.
Great shout! Yeah, expression control over the 'Filter' knob would really open up this pedal!
Where do I start. I think firstly, well done for another great vid, another great pedal. Although by now, we all know, this comes as standard.
I love these collabs, especially when it's two of my favourite builders.
Both algorithms sound too mental to be unusable somewhere. At least in my arsenal anyway, the more sound morphing the better.
Alas criticism, and it pains me greatly.
I can live without volume, I'm running into a mixer and tabletop noise noodling, I can split the signal for wet and dry and again, as my hands aren't full of guitar I can add expression manually with the knobs.
My criticisms are the sound, the DBA was crackling in a digital clipping sort of of way, just like a cheap digi delay multifx pedal such as Island Delay by Donner. What a shame, it improved with the addition of the second pedal, but was still there. What a shame, did EQD hog the processor, and only let DBA have 15% of it? It sounds like a budget DSP!
A plus though, as with the Donner Island there's a Rainbow Machinesque thing going on, just try the Deluxe setting on the Donner, that's why I haven't sold it, absolutely batshit unusable, unless you want to make vocals sound like a mocking high pitched demon, which I do sometimes, it's priceless. Trouble is it'll clip like a ticket inspector on speed, if you don't hold back on gain.
I agree, the Hague will be prosecuting EQD and DBA if they don't make this crazy bustard available to the masses.

Regarding the sound quality, this pedal is built on EQD's Spatial Delivery board, just with different algorithms loaded onto the Spin FV-1 chip. How much space is alloted to each side, I don't know. But the "hidden" mode in the toggle switch's centre position is clearly EQD's Rainbow Machine algorithm, so I think it's fair to assume that the majority of the chip is given over to Earthquaker.

@PedalExperiments was it me or did the DBA have an unusable digital, fm static clipping thing going on?
@stuartchapman5171 I haven't noticed anything that bothered me about that mode, personally. But my ears aren't the best, and it's possible that there might have just been some clipping on my phone as the audio was being recorded?
I'm not sure, tbh. But either way, I definitely preferred the EQD side! 😄
@PedalExperiments my bad, I had the volume turned too high on my fone, it clips with my cheap cans. Doh, in fairness I should edit or delete those comments.
Right after I hand in the petition to parliament, to debate forcing a re-release of this necessary pedal.

Sounds largely stupid, and I disagree quite strongly that any of these tones/effects would sit well in some sort of shoegaze deal. However, I can see it being useful for trying to create stuff like the sounds on Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age.
