I hate how this game is so ignored or worse, misunderstood. The negative reviews really hurt. Sure its not a game for everyone, but it's a game for a lot of people. Anyone who likes Deus Ex or System Shock should easily love Prey. Or anyone who liked Bioshock but was disappointed that it was a linear game should be fucking thrilled Prey exists. I mean, it's quite literally what Bioshock was gonna be, like during the early trailers/interviews and vertical slices. Anyways I'm glad you covered it and I'm glad you really gave your opinions because a lot of people either say they love it or hate it and it's all or nothing.
It really didn't help that it took the name of a game that people were excited about (prey 2) and Bethesda basically destroyed a promising franchise (along with the developer) purely so that they could ultimately slap the name on a completely original project that had nothing to do with either the original or the sequel that had excited so many people. If this game had not been overshadowed by the publisher's crappy treatment of their development teams I feel that it would have been looked upon more favourably and could have made a better impression on potential players. The name of the game barely makes any sense at all with the second-hand IP (at least the original Prey was about aliens who used humans as a food source). If they called it something like Endless Morning at least that would have been thematically relevant and could be seen as a play on words that gives a subtle hint at the twist.
I completely get where you’re coming from with the Typhon designs, but I think Arkane nailed it. They’re not very scary, sure, but the formless design gives them a Rorschach test look, which I think really feeds into the themes of the game.
I don't think the game was really meant to be scary so much as it was meant to be unnerving/anxiety-inducing. Playing it for the first time and not knowing when a mimic will strike is the worst feeling (in a good way) when playing this game. Of course, once you know the gimmick, you're either playing super cautiously or going full rambo on every object you see (until you get the ability to identify mimic objects through scanning). After a while, it becomes less about the mimics and more about you handling your resources properly, both of which can be anxiety-inducing (imagine running low on metal to make more ammo for your weapons!).
I just figured they were made of the coral strands, just not glowing. Like if you frayed apart a rope into all the strands, but they stayed together in kind of a cloud. Then when they die they become little balls of the strands curled up. Makes sense since they're all made by a weaver.
Yeah I think the whole ink blot test look is fantastic, I really really like how the Phantoms, Mimics and Nightmare looks like. Phantoms in particular have some extremely unnerving quality to them, it's as if I'd seen one in a dream before, like Arkana tapped into some archetype that I didn't know existed and pulled it out. The Telepath, Technopath and Weawer designs are less exciting but I do apreciate how weird they are.
huh, I for one find them unnerving, well the Phantoms at least as they are mostly manshaped and together sounds they produce.. Ofcourse those feelings start to fade as you play for several hours and get used to them. But the first time I saw one? Very intimidating.
I really wish Prey delved more into it's themes of identity, there was so much potential for it with the multiple operators of Morgan's past personalities.
This game is criminally underrated. The attention to detail and atmosphere is insane. I also love the small things like the use of the 0451 code in these immersive sims.
Watched this after just finishing my first playthough, it was on hard and I chose to take absolutely no typhon mods, as well as save everyone I could. only human killed being the bastard cook. even took alex's hand after using the nullwave instead of the self destruct. This was absolutely amazing to watch since it was basically watching the COMPLETE opposite of all of my own choices since I didn't plan to play again to try it out, Not that I don't absolutely adore the game, I just don't much enjoy replaying in general, thank you for this gem!
A note: December ISN"T lying to you. He is doing what Morgan programmed him to do, just as January is doing what Morgan programmed him to do. Over the course of the tests, Morgan changed, and her decisions on how to deal with the typhon changed as well (you can find plans that predate December if you look around thoroughly).
My wife got this game for me knowing that I'm a huge system shock fan, but didn't tell me anything about it. I played it for about an hour got bored and moved on, apparently I was Moody that day. Came back about a month later it clicked with me what this game was and I reinstalled it in a mad panic, played start to finish. It's now one of my favorite games of all time.
I loved this game, I actually had a great time playing on Nightmare survival but never using any neuro mods. You can get in every locked door, I remember one in the beginning requiring you to bounce a nerf dart off of a glue gun blob into the monitor. I was very proud of that one.
Not a complete explanation for the r2r’s but Kennedy surviving means that we don’t become involved in certain wars and war is the biggest pusher of specific tech like communication and recording.
13:30 I've played games with subtitles my entire life, simply because I don't want to miss something. It never occurred to me that I shouldn't be able to understand them until now.
13:35 actually the phantoms are mimicking English. It’s just so distorted that it’s hard to understand by hearing alone. Some of them are directly quoting NPC dialogue. If you read the research files, it says they try to mimic human speech but seem to not understand language, kind of like a parrot. The poltergeists do it too they just sound more distorted and even harder to understand. The poltergeists sometimes actually say Morgan’s name too. There’s a UA-cam channel that uploaded their voice lines with subtitles and it’s easier to understand when listening to the sound clips alone.
Can we all appreciate, for a moment, the incredible performance of Benedict Wong? he nails Alex's character so perfectly, the oxymoronic sincerity in the way he delivers his lies- the way he reminisces on his and Morgan's childhoods. It's something that suits Benedict perfectly when you look at his other roles, especially as Kublai Khan. I don't think they could've picked a better person for his role and ahis performance alone makes me think better of the game.
Oh hell yeah, I never finished Pray after finding that cop-out early ending.. glad to get to see how it's all meant to play out. XD Merry Chrimbo to ye! Hope you have a good one!
You mentioned how stunning big enemies with the GLOO gun was a bit shit compared to the disrupter, which is fair enough for stunning, but one of my big revelations in the game was the power gravity had! You lure technos and telepaths up high and then just GLOO gun them, let them fall to their deaths, it was crazy effective. Speed impact in general worked well, in the space areas I'd GLOO them and race up to them and shotgun them in the face a couple of times, the impact of them hitting walls when they got launched by the shotgun would help out too.
Hey I never said this but I'm a game design student who often watches your videos and, wether it's in the background or not. I really do take what you have to say into consideration. Anyway, love ya strat
I always love these long form videos. Great to watch, and later to put on while I’m doing something like dishes or gaming. I kinda wish he’d play the “BUCKSHOT” clip whenever he uses a shotgun in a game.
Was wondering when will be Prey 2017 video, you wanted to make it since Dishonored video. P.S.Can't wait few months for Weird West Immersive sim/RPG by Raphael Colantonio (founder of Arkane)
Very refreshing for you to just gush over a game so much and not talk shit the whole time. I mean I love that too but it was cool to hear how much you liked it man.
When I played Prey, in a week, I immeadiately went and did 3 playthroughs after finishing one. I love how you can playthrough the game completely without getting neuromods. (Like how you can playthrough Dishonored 2 without powers too). The Nightmare-Survival no-neuromods run is one of the most exhilarating gameplay experiences I've had.
Easily the 2nd or 3rd best game I played this year, just a hair's breadth behind Disco Elysium and possibly Subnautica. So glad it's getting the deep dive from a quality source. Love and peace in the new year, Strat. Wishing the family well.
I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, so I'll bring it up because you claimed that Stims are more valuable than neuromods: There's a sidequest you can do in the life support area that makes the water give you back 50 psy points per sip. Almost every area in the game has at least one sink you can reliably get back to whenever you want, so once you complete this sidequest(Which you can do basically as soon as you get through the guts and bring the elevator down) you're pretty much a god as long as you hydrate constantly. This also means you have pretty much nothing else to use your exotic matter on BESIDES more mods.
this is perfect my dude! i'ma watch this in that sweet spot on Christmas day when everyone is full-on food and off doing their own thing. Thanks as always for the top-tier content my dude merry Christmas to you and yours and fuck it, merry Christmas to anyone who reads this comment, hope you have a good December 25th. Much love!

This is an amazing christmas present. I remember watching your original prey video back when it was released and being super intrigued. I then promptly went and asked my parents if I could play it to which they said no (I was 14 at the time). Since I couldn't play it I kept on listening to your video so many times, to the point where even now I still remember half of those opening 30 minutes and it brings back chills whenever I hear those lines. I played the game myself a year or two ago just because of your video and it was amazing. I've played it multiple times since and it's one of my favorite games of all time. I didn't even consider the possibility of you making another video but seeing this pop up in my subscription feed makes me very happy and it is a great christmas gift thank you.
Would be cool to see you review Deathloop some day, fully committed to funky 80's explotation movie style and feel, it also has the power trip of Dishonoured, but revels in it because your actions only have consequence within the loop, be prepared for mindfuckery.
This video came out on the perfect time, I had just finshed binging prey for the first time and prepared by completing both dishonored 1 and both its dlcs multiple times (which I had finished just for the sake of watching you're dishonored review) along with dark messiah and the opening of arx fatals. I also finished you're first part of the immersive Sim documentary too, loved every bit of it, haven't watched the video yet but I'm gonna get to it as soon as I have the free time.

2 AND A HALF HOURS OF PREY TALK!? STRAT YOU'RE SPOILING ME! Also my first playthrough of this game ever was on Nightmare with all the survival options turned on and it's been my favorite game ever since. Masterclass vidya game.

Just finished this game yesterday and it is now one of my favorite games now, took me about 38 hours and I enjoyed exploring all lf the station thoroughly
If you released the "volunteer" trapped in that glass cage he would tell you about a fat guy with a suit just like his, going around killing people. That's how I did not fell for the chef's trap
"Trolley problem" the game. :) It makes one wonder about this social ethical question, doesn't it? Interestingly, the game's expansion revolves around a story of saving a bunch of separate people from a moon outpost. But they must work cooperatively to reach the game's goal. I think devs try to give us some message through their works.
Just finished Prey yesterday. Had heaps of ammo for every weapon, 10+ of all grenades and +100 crafting materials. Played on nightmare with all the extra features turned on and no typhon neuromods.
I never crafted any Psi Hypos and I never felt like I needed to. Making more Neuromods is better because the more you install the more efficient your attacks become
Its great that even after so many years, so many new prey review and documentations are coming out. If there are enough maybe it will send a sign that we need a Prey 2.... one can only dream.
I played through Prey as a first person shooter with a focus on hacking and crafting. Yeah, crafting the neuro-mods allowed you to bypass some of the difficulty spikes, except, I failed to ever kill or damage a Nightmare without being killed quick fast and in a hurry. The ability to run through the last parts of the game, where the enhanced enemies swarm you, made things exciting and fun. As for my choices: Killed the fake chef => He murder everyone he ran into, and attempted to deceive me. Saved everyone else => More meat to the grinder to keep the aliens off my back, or provide back up. Caused the station to emit the psychic pulse => Exploding the station would not stop the aliens from coming. The pulses and the visions indicate a higher intelligence. An explosion causes an investigation, so more big aliens sent over. A psychic feedback to them, lets them know, we can fight. Hopefully, brings them to the table for talks. The old Greek proverb: "If you wish for peace, then prepare for war." In the ending scene, I felt tempted to kill Yu, because they basically experimented with my species. After some thought, if we could properly communicate, then maybe, we could of avoided said situation, however the lower lifeforms tend to be unable to do much other than procreate. From the research tapes and the like, I figured out a bit more about the Typhon. They consume our nervous system to reproduce, and need specific types of advance nerves tissue to do so. Never found records of Typhon consuming an insect. The doctor's nervous system illness provides a clue on an effective bioweapon against the Typhon. Her degenerative disease allows her to walk around the ship with little worry of Typhon attack. Since, we produce large amounts of bioweapons, and some specifically nerve agents, then it makes since to use these weapons on them. Shoot, I'd figure out how to kill them, after figuring out how to breed them off of lab grown nervous tissue. It would be the ultimate fail safe: a sprinkler system filled with the toxin. The last conclusion, is the Typhon, we see at least, exist as smaller components of a larger organism. Coral acts as the nervous system to this gigantic being, with the lesser Typhon acting as the circulatory, and immune system. Hence, these "cells" lacking a part of the being makes sense. From a scientific stand point, witnessing the completed being appear, a being the size of a planet, or a moon, then trying to understand it, would lead to multiple interesting theories and the like. The realist asks how to fight such a being, and how to communicate with it. Might be interesting to see these questions answered in a sequel or more likely, a book.
Leverage skilltree is good because if youre low on resources then its effective to pile up a bunch of random items in small rooms and just chuck recycler charges at them
It's too bad that the recycler has a limit to how many things it can recycle at once. I've once put a whole room's worth (and then some) of things into a small, tight room and it only ate up like 8-10 things :( It's unfortunately not very efficient either, but it's good when you're low on a particular resource (for me, it was either exotic material or metal).
This is the best review of prey! I wish I watched this when I first started but still has a ton of tips as I continue. I love the long in depth format! I can tell you are a real fan of the game…Subscribed 🎉

Are you like a total casual or something? I too played on medium but after a while the game became a cakewalk and i dominated everything and had so much supplies even in maxed out slots over half space was taken by them. I also had 247 neuromods used (65 skills purchased) so that helped a lot (i played slowly as it took me 35 h to finish my first playthrough but i explored a lot). After few first hours it became quite easy. So how it was difficult for you? I rarely get why casuals have problems with games so im interested to see what points made you "hobble" though the game. Unless i misunderstood your comment.
I just recently played prey for the first time, completed the game on normal.. loved it.. just started another play through n nightmare n man, I’m like 2 hours in and I’ve seen more mimics than I saw for the entirety of my first play through lol
I just played this game for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I love it so much that I’m already going through my second playthrough. My first playthrough was human neuromod only on hard survival. I believe a human only playthrough is common, but also a strong and compelling progression going through the game through firepower, skills, and mobility. It’s a tough but a perfectly manageable experience. Incidentally since I already completed the game on human only, I am now in the middle of a typhon-only playthrough to get the Split Affinity achievement. I decided to bump it up to Nigthmare survival to really test myself, and I have to say it has definitely been a unique experience but not the one I was expecting. With no human mods, you cannot repair weapons or equipment, upgrades are basic and fleeting as you'll eventually have to drop the weapon for a new one, you have permanently low health and psi pools, basic stealth, you move SO FUCKING SLOW, your ability path comes online a bit slowly but by far the worst bit is the low inventory capacity. Even with access to all the Typhon abilities, you need a lot of resources to use your abilities, and because of that cost, your firearms are still an integral part of your total damage output - which means you still need all of them on you - which does nothing for your inventory problem. That all said, you certainly have a lot of options to sway the encounter in your favor. It’s a completely different play style that requires a lot of forward thinking before you execute your plans for many encounters. Now that I have access to mindjack and phantom genesis, I am fond starting encounters with the scales weighted in my favor. Despite being able to manage the tougher enemies, I am yet to defeat a nightmare on this playthrough. I haven't even tried as they hunt you down much more often and I imagine are a *nightmare* for your resources. It’s a pretty unique experience, and while it is a difficult playthrough on survival nightmare, I am managing well enough to go for most of the side quests on Talos I without too much strain.
The GLOO Cannon was innovative and let the developers reinvent their level design. I like that they give the players the power to basically add semi permanent structures to the level to further immersive exploration.
i really like listening to you and doc banter back n forth . im watched this video way more than i would probably admit to any human being but i just idk . your point of view is fascinating and i cant wait for more .
This was a great video! Everyone please grab the game for free on Epic games, currently free on 12/25/21. Some thoughts: It was interesting to see a different playstyle from my own; I relied way more on leveling most neuromod trees, but never used the evade ability; I found there was enough cover, and my opening gambits were strong enough to not need it. During the Dahl section, you can mimic the laser operators, which you can pilot better than the actual operators, killing them quickly and also confusing most enemies. You never mentioned this but there is a better version of the pistol you can find in crew quarters that comes with a slight damage buff above the base variant.
Worth noting that you can perform most of these exploits in the demo - like, you can explore pretty much the entire lobby area and get some mid-game stuff right off the bat, easily the best way to convince an immersive sim veteran that they need this game.
Happy Holidays everyone! If you liked the video, please share it. The view on this got tanked somehow. Maybe it's that time of year. Anyway, happy holidays. I hope this coming year treats everyone better than the last.
Merry Christmas Strat! Thanks for the content!

American krogan really made me look at bioshock in a…..”different” light.
It does fit thematically... it's just a shame that the designs were very similar to a lot of other lovecraftian inspired media at the time.
huh, I for one find them unnerving, well the Phantoms at least as they are mostly manshaped and together sounds they produce.. Ofcourse those feelings start to fade as you play for several hours and get used to them. But the first time I saw one? Very intimidating.
I really wish Prey delved more into it's themes of identity, there was so much potential for it with the multiple operators of Morgan's past personalities.
I was hoping for more as well, all sorts of aspects of personalities could've seen so many different and even unhinged endings
No need to kill him... just, ya know... stalk him down and let him recycle himself with his own trap and dodge out of the danger :p
Her?
@@Dogman262 at start of the game you select your gender
You're a friggin genius
@@Orange_Swirl I know, but thank you.
Criminally underrated game. Good on you for giving it some attention, Strat. Oh and happy holidays from London. 🎁
If this game was something, underrated wasnt one, everyone and their mother knew about it and sucked it balls deep
Ps:happy holidays :D
Not a complete explanation for the r2r’s but Kennedy surviving means that we don’t become involved in certain wars and war is the biggest pusher of specific tech like communication and recording.
I adored prey ever since I first played it. The whole world just sucked me in and the mooncrash dlc is the best I've ever played
13:30 I've played games with subtitles my entire life, simply because I don't want to miss something. It never occurred to me that I shouldn't be able to understand them until now.
Was just wondering where you've been, happy to see another video man!
My thoughts exactly!
Can’t say I’m a fan of ‘Nick’, but he’s right, this is on in the background while I’m working.
Voice is grading on my ears, but I understand the 2 characters he’s trying to do.
Just watched the Tiptoe the tank video on prey last night. Thanks to all the amazing creators.
Loved this game. One of the few games I not only actually finished, but beat it twice and want to do a third playthrough
ive been playing this 10/10 the past few weeks, this video couldn't have come at a better time
Prey is imo Arkanes finest work. One of my favorite games of all time.
this nick/doc dialog would work if i didn't know it was just you talking to yourself
Oh hell yeah, I never finished Pray after finding that cop-out early ending.. glad to get to see how it's all meant to play out. XD
Merry Chrimbo to ye!
Speed impact in general worked well, in the space areas I'd GLOO them and race up to them and shotgun them in the face a couple of times, the impact of them hitting walls when they got launched by the shotgun would help out too.
you really underused the recycling grenade, that thing turns almost any obstacle and enemy into delicious material
Great video man. I particularly loved the art-style analysis. Really taught me a lot about Art-Deco!
Very refreshing for you to just gush over a game so much and not talk shit the whole time. I mean I love that too but it was cool to hear how much you liked it man.
I’ve been waiting for a prey video for some time. I’m so glad this is finally a thing
This was definitely Colantonio’s magnum opus, everything Arkane after this is simply not on the same level
Much love!
Prey is brutal on nightmare, everything wrecks in a couple hits but puts horror in the survival horror
Also hopefully your ticker is still doing well after your surgery
The light you're throwing at the lady can be taken to the helipad and you can pick it back up after the ride
You might actually be my favorite long form content creator on the platform currently
I do watch your videos actively, not in the background, if that serves for something. Great video on one of my favourite games ever.
Love these machinima-type reviews. Nice.
Would be cool to see you review Deathloop some day, fully committed to funky 80's explotation movie style and feel, it also has the power trip of Dishonoured, but revels in it because your actions only have consequence within the loop, be prepared for mindfuckery.
more like midloop
Deathloop is the most mid FPS ever created
This video came out on the perfect time, I had just finshed binging prey for the first time and prepared by completing both dishonored 1 and both its dlcs multiple times (which I had finished just for the sake of watching you're dishonored review) along with dark messiah and the opening of arx fatals.
I also finished you're first part of the immersive Sim documentary too, loved every bit of it, haven't watched the video yet but I'm gonna get to it as soon as I have the free time.
I love everything about this channel. Even the foreground of the two guys in hell, which sums up every aspire sharing their love for a game to a neuro-typical. I've seen this video a few times, which means that the informational delivery is entertaining. Keep up the good work!
2 AND A HALF HOURS OF PREY TALK!? STRAT YOU'RE SPOILING ME!
Also my first playthrough of this game ever was on Nightmare with all the survival options turned on and it's been my favorite game ever since. Masterclass vidya game.
This was a timely video. Prey is free for 12 more hours on the Epic game store.
The word you are thinking of at the beginning when you talked about the art style is retro futurism.
Man I love this game, this vid made me go back and play. I did a nightmare run, no typhon mods. I tried doing mostly wrench. Basically Iassc Clarke, bloody wrench and gloogun. I love your work, thank you for making such amazing content.
Just stumbled upon this channel and I would watch hours of content in the syle of the two guys in the intro!
Another of your how to videos on a game I really like! Merry Christmas to me!
Mate you are upping your game video by video.. thank you for the entertainment and happy holidays!!
I love PREY. It deserves 10x more spotlight. Masterpiece.
Quality entertainment, as always! Great work pal : )
Just finished this game yesterday and it is now one of my favorite games now, took me about 38 hours and I enjoyed exploring all lf the station thoroughly
So fucking happy to see these two back!
If you released the "volunteer" trapped in that glass cage he would tell you about a fat guy with a suit just like his, going around killing people. That's how I did not fell for the chef's trap
I’ve watched your longer videos so many times. These are all amazing.
And then Mooncrash was amazing as well. THAT is how you do a roguelike. Excellent level design, everything else randomized.
Hey dude, finally finished Kotor 2 to finish watching your video about how to be gud at it. Merry Christmas!
Just finished Prey yesterday. Had heaps of ammo for every weapon, 10+ of all grenades and +100 crafting materials. Played on nightmare with all the extra features turned on and no typhon neuromods.
The when it comes to the aliens cut needs to be respected. Such a good cutaway right there
I never crafted any Psi Hypos and I never felt like I needed to. Making more Neuromods is better because the more you install the more efficient your attacks become
This took multiple sittings to actually get through, but Nick had me coming back.
For those who haven't played Prey yet, it will be available for FREE on EGS tomorrow
Time to reinstall pray again. A good watch after a full Xmas dinner
As for my choices:
Killed the fake chef => He murder everyone he ran into, and attempted to deceive me.
The old Greek proverb: "If you wish for peace, then prepare for war."
In the ending scene, I felt tempted to kill Yu, because they basically experimented with my species.
Man what timing. I just re-installed the game the other day with the intention of doing some other kinds of playthroughs.
Leverage skilltree is good because if youre low on resources then its effective to pile up a bunch of random items in small rooms and just chuck recycler charges at them
It's too bad that the recycler has a limit to how many things it can recycle at once. I've once put a whole room's worth (and then some) of things into a small, tight room and it only ate up like 8-10 things :(
It's unfortunately not very efficient either, but it's good when you're low on a particular resource (for me, it was either exotic material or metal).
@@ToyokaX its only what the reclycler can "see" like if theres 2 things next to each other the reclycer cant see the other so it only gets one
the cat video remark made me vietnam flashback to similar internet videos... thx brother
This is the best review of prey! I wish I watched this when I first started but still has a ton of tips as I continue. I love the long in depth format! I can tell you are a real fan of the game…Subscribed 🎉
Prey is one of the best games of all Times imo. A true Immersive sim and the System Shock 3 we never got. I really hope we see a sequel one day
Yay! Nicks back! Merry Christmas everyone
That conversation about the importance or lack there of for these videos made me laugh really hard. You are one of or maybe my absolute favorite youtuber. You are, or seem to be, down to earth and also you're a fellow veteran which is cool. anyways thanks for the video, very informative and I have always wanted to get into this game but haven't been able to.
'oh man typhon is soo powerful and fun, btw take hypos over neuromods everytime or you will run out'
Hobbled my way through this about six months ago on medium. interested to see how this is even possible
This videos intro flows so cohesively into the rest
Finally got enough spare time to watch this in it's entirety, awesome take on an awesome game, great job man.
Its amazing this was released the day before it was free on epic games for the holidays.
At times i just feel so zen watching and listening to you explain the feeling of such an amazingly crafted game.
We got prey!! Thanks for making me fall in love with this game again
Worth noting that you can perform most of these exploits in the demo - like, you can explore pretty much the entire lobby area and get some mid-game stuff right off the bat, easily the best way to convince an immersive sim veteran that they need this game.
I just love seeing prey aging well. I fell in love the day it came out.
Also! If you havent played the DLC i would highly recommend.
I can't get my random "I bet cats taste good." backed up with good reasoning content on any other video game channel.
This game is amazing! Loved playing it. My playthrough was nothing like yours haha!
Took me 11 days to finally sit down and start watching.
