FYI and not sure it matters, but per the "HDZero_VTX_UserManual_v0.3.pdf" User Manual stated that you need to power on the Freestyle VTX and wait for the the blue led to flash three times to 'complete the unlock' after you have flashed it with the Unlock_freestyle\HDZERO_TX.bin but before you flash the VTX with the FreestyleVTX.Rev26012022\HDZERO_TX.bin or newer firmware.

It does state that in the manual for sure, but in my experience the first boot where you have the VTX and VRX connected to flash the VTX firmware after the unlock usually starts with those three blue flashes and encompasses the necessary process. I think they are playing it safe a little with the instructions, but absolutely an option if you want to follow it to the letter.
I 100% agree with powering up the vtx after unlocking to get the 3 blue flashes before flashing new firmware. I tried four times in a row and could not get it to unlock until I powered up the VTX first. Just in case anybody else goes through what I went through but I 100% appreciate the videos please keep them coming!

Been watching you since I bought the latest HDZero goggles and 3 1w vtx plus 3 runcam cameras. Building a Rekon 7” pro then skyhunter 1800 then ZHOD dart xl extreme. The open source project for their firmware is just getting started, so I think now is a great time to jump in on it and see where some dedicated developers can take it in the near future! I am so glad you are digging the flight style too. For me it always just feels like a dance more than going for really technical tricks, but my thumbs just do what they are going to do, lol. Your so right about the SD card thanks for making this video. I bought SharkBite when it was new and hadn't touched it since waiting for INav to adopt it. Could not get it to update All the SD cards I was using were too big I guess so thank you very much works great now

@@jimmytheriot8978 so you have two real options for setting the output power on this VTX. one is smart audio, but I am not sure how well implemented that is with iNav and this VTX. The other is the HDZero stick commands. You can read up on those in the manual from their site's download section at the very top. I prefer smart audio, but that is usually because I like to use things like low power disarm.

Yeah its really not too bad. I think the biggest thing that people are getting stuck on at this point is unlocking the VTX after the flash, which just wont work. I actually did it that way the first time, even after reading the instructions several times, and had to beat my head on a wall trying to figure out where I messed up, lol.
Excellent video - timely - thank you ! I am using INAV and I am installing HDZero - your instructions are great for Betaflight users. My questions relate to INAV. I did all the flashing VRx, unlocking VTx and flashing VTx and all went well. This process is the same regardless of Betaflight or INAV. My questions are related to the end of the process and the use of the VTX table (I do not beleive this is needed for INAV, can you or someone else confirm)? Regarding configuring the Ports: I am assuming, with INAV, that I will still configure two UART ports (one for peripheral selections and the second for MSP enable? Can you or others clarify the ports setup for INAV? This video was well done.
I haven't used INAV personally, but from some other questions people have had I can tell you for sure that you are correct on it not needing the VTX table. As for the UARTs you should still need a full TX/RX for the MSP OSD, but I would leave off the smart audio peripheral and just control the channel and power with HDZero stick commands since they work so well.
Great vid! I just ordered two Freestyle VTX's today so should be here tomorrow and will use this video to get them setup. On a side note, I have a 2Fiddy 5" with the Race V2 VTX in it and I'm having issues with the screen blacking out whenever you try to go into the SA screen or any OSD setting screen but it doesn't do it when it's flying. Ever heard of this issue before?
I think you will really enjoy those 1W VTX's! So the OSD works just fine until you try to go into one of the BF menus? It sounds to me like a firmware thing at first glance. It wouldn't hurt to try updating to the latest on the VTX and VRX if you haven't already.
Yes, I have the most recent firmware on everything. Strange this is, I switched my receiver last night from the ceramic elrs to a Axisflying elrs regular antenna one and it helped it drastically! Now it hardly does it at all, but it's still happening occasionally though. IDK 🤷
Thank you! The VTX will work without SA if you want to use the stick commands to control the VTX. If you unlock it, the full output is available either way you go.

@@FPVMedias This is pretty common actually. What you will want to do is flash the unlock again. Once the unlock flashes and tells you to restart the VTX, just unplug power from your VRX, wait a second, plug the VRX back in, let the VTX power back up off of the VRX, wait for the blue light on the VTX to blink 5 times then go solid, wait another couple of seconds, then disconnect power from your VRX again. After that you will need to go through the actual firmware flash on the VTX one more time.
I recently purchased an hdzero freestyle and I have it hooked up with power via a battery nothing else, my hdzero box goggle connects to a signal then it's just a black screen, can you offer any advice this is my first drone hardware. hmmmm, do you have any lights on the VTX? That will tell us what may be going on with the connection between the camera and the VTX. If the lights are correct, then you may be in 0w output mode but if the lights are doing something funny you could have a camera or cable issue causing that black screen.

I didn't have access to a PC but after updating the transporter 2hd and the freestyle vtx it is working, is it normal for brown to appear as pink? I don't have a flight controller as this is an rc car project, so I guess I can't access any camera settings? I've bought so many cameras and vtx and nothing plays nice or I can't use it all bc I don't have an FC is really bumming me out and draining $.
Thats why my vtx's shut off while arming! I need to fix my table 🤗 thx for that. But hey, i dont think the amplifier powers on while uploading. Never had heat issues while updating and im holding them in my hand since i update on a groundstation
Glad I could help point it out! I too believe that the amplifier is at least in a zero output state while it is connected to the VRX and doesn't reach anywhere near the temperatures that it would under typical conditions. Me emphasizing the use of a fan is really just an abundance of caution. I know someone out there is gonna flash their VTX and leave it plugged in for an extra hour or something because their dog decided to run out the door right in the middle of their firmware update....or something like that, lol
@@BaconNinjaFPV well that would be a really unfortune case 😅 but the fan will help then for sure. I run a 1w in a foam wing, foam is notorious to insulate temps really well as you certainly know. But i run a 20x20 5v fan right about it and can leave the vtx plugged in for ever. At least it doesn't get even warm in the current weather conditions. You should try it with inav. Its awesome as well
Man IDK how you wing pilots can fly wings, lol....i just know I would crash endlessly and break so much stuff. Im looking forward to seeing how this VTX holds up during a 115 degree Texas summer with no active cooling in the back of the quad. Im sure it will be fine when its in the air, but on the ground is going to be a whole different ball game.
@@BaconNinjaFPV well its actually about the same with the DJI stuff, they get hot af as well. The airunit just has all that metal case thingy acting as a cooler. About the fixed wings. Just get some stryofoam sheets and start building some really low buget wings for the beginning. You need 2 sheets and 20 mins for a wing xD i started with actual insolation styrofoamsheets in 10mm and now i freaking love planes even more than quads. Its really easy btw
after the unlock, you have to set it with either the HDZero stick commands or smartaudio. Check out the other comment I wrote you for some more detail on that.
I followed your directions step by step while pausing the video as I progressed. Everything is working except for the fact that the tx is still not unlocked. I'm not sure what I did wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Some people have found that after flashing the unlock you may need to power down the VTX, power the VTX back up, wait for the lights to stabilize, then power it down and proceed with the next step. I didn't have to on either of mine, but others have reported the need for sure.
@@doncunningham3124 in the case thay you have to do this extra boot to get the flash to take, that is correct. I am working on some amendments to this video to cover that scenario, sorry about the clarification.

Just to clarify, it is only the part where you unplug the update cable after the unlock flash, power the VTX up via the drone's battery and wait for the lights, then power down that needs the external battery. the next flashing step for the actual firmware is powered by the VRX again after that. Are you talking about the top option in the VTX table? If I remember correctly, that one was always labeled max and was just part of the default VTX table for this one. It just wasn't actually available unless the VTX was unlocked, so if you picked it before unlocking it would just drop back down to 25mw without saying anything.
Unfortunately the stock is suuuuuuper low everywhere for the VRX. Mine came from RotorLogic and they seem to be one of the few places that had them available. Hopefully HDZero can get their branded VRX out before the end of the month and get back to normal stock levels.
lol, its for sure not that simple in HDZero. I think as their product line progresses we will see it be simplified, but as this is their first 1 watt capable VTX I just don't think the process lends itself to being as easy.

Are you talking about the top option in the VTX table? If I remember correctly, that one was always labeled max and was just part of the default VTX table for this one. It just wasn't actually available unless the VTX was unlocked, so if you picked it before unlocking it would just drop back down to 25mw without saying anything.

Unfortunately the stock is suuuuuuper low everywhere for the VRX. Mine came from RotorLogic and they seem to be one of the few places that had them available. Hopefully HDZero can get their branded VRX out before the end of the month and get back to normal stock levels.

Jesus what a pain in the ass… whatever happened to button pushing sequences to unlock like the tbs vtx’s
lol, its for sure not that simple in HDZero. I think as their product line progresses we will see it be simplified, but as this is their first 1 watt capable VTX I just don't think the process lends itself to being as easy.
