Hi all! Thanks for checking out the video 🤙 Let me know which of the two builds you’d rather see next 😁 My Instagram link is: instagram.com/toastyrides/ If you need to contact me, DM’s there are the best way! Have a great day 🥳
Something to keep in mind when building a dropbar mtb is the new and longer reach! Ideally you want a frame that’s a size smaller (in the toptube) than you’d normally go. As the dropbar conversion pushes forward by quite a bit, you don’t want to be over extended. 😄🤙
I'm always impressed with the work you do on these crusty old bikes. We have a variety of lightly used old mountain bikes in my area and if I'm looking for a project I have the advantage of starting with a really nice example for around $100 U.S. or less. Just picked up a 2001 garage queen Trek 800 and a 1995 Gary Fisher Aquila in similar condition. You just have to act quick and pay full asking price if you recognize it as a good deal.
They’re really cool! The older ones with optional friction mode are a bit curvier, so feel a touch nicer. But they’re all great, really. Definitely a nifty retro shifter 👍😎
Just picked up a slightly older model, in a similar condition for nothing. Hoping to get some inspiration from a few of your builds. Particularly the respray of the hard rock into that amazing stump jumper cruiser. Keep up the great Instagram posts and UA-cam videos! 👌👍
Oo awesome! Always cool to find sweet bikes for free 👌 Nice! Something along those lines would be cool, look forward to seeing what you come up with! Send some pics when you’re done 😎🤙 Thank you, will do! 😁
I usually try to fit V brakes (with "travel agents") as they are stronger or at least the old style wide-arm cantis as they are less finicky to adjust and are also stronger.
Yeah I had some Sora ones when I was building this up but they’re dead haha. Pawls/ratchet worn so wouldn’t hold a gear when installed. 😔 They do show up every now and then and I try grab them when I can 👌 are all the rx100 triple compatible? Have a few Ultegra and Tiagra triple ones now though, so the next dropbar bike will have road brifters 🤙
Nicely done! I’m considering converting my own hybrid/MTB to a drop bar gravel-ish bike. Thinking of using thumb shifters since bar end shifters are quite expensive at the moment. Not heard of butterfly shifters before. +1 subscriber!
Cheers mate! Yeah it extends out quite a bit farther, especially when on the hoods! Who knows, you might find an old mtb in a smaller size soon to try a dropbar conversion on 🤞 Look forward to your next video!
In the process of puzzling the pieces to do mine, I see you have the original stem, which size of bar do i need to order? does the modern 31.8mm will fit ?
Love the build! I just converted a Giant Iguana myself to drop bars, but I'm looking for brake levers like yours as mine came with the suicide brakes and I don't like them haha. Where did you get yours?
Very nice!! I got these from a mate, if you have a community bike hub you might find decent old road levers from there. They show up online every now and then, too 😁 Hopefully some pop up for you! 🤞
Oh nice! You got them to fit on dropbars? Which shifters were they? Would be cool to see! I have some thumbies mounted on an Albastache bar which is 23.8. But they’re a thin clamp style that I could open up a bit and use a longer clamp bolt haha. Work fine, but not my favourite thumbie!
@@toastyrides I put the cheapest Shimano thumb shifters that are not even available on their site, guess they not proud of them all that much, on a 31.8 handlebar using zip ties 😀, I tried to mount them the way you did it but the clamps were just stretched too much
Hey mate! I think you’re referring to the clamp I used yeah? It’s just a g-clamp that’s a good size to hold the pads to the rims 👌 Or maybe you’re talking about something else, do you know when I mentioned it?haha
Impossible without butchering the thumbies. This is a dropbar build, m735 thumbies are 22.2 and alloy so can’t fit over 23.8 dropbars. MT60, however, with the steel clamp can fit over with a longer bolt. That’s provided the customer wanted thumbies, which he didn’t so this conversation is pointless, but I just wanted to inform you why your suggestion isn’t the best option. Also, these shifters are much cheaper than the current value of the thumbies you recommended. Cheers and have fun with the projects! 🤙
@@toastyrides On mtb-news or retrobike you can get instructions how to enlarge the diameter with a simple rounded file or simply with a Dremel. No biggie. btw. you're right, thumbies demand collector's prices now.
@@DilbertMuc enlarging the diameter is what I meant by butchering them, easy but avoidable, if you want thumbies on a 23.8 bar then just use steel clamp ones like I mentioned 👍 works nicely
A friction is compatible with any speed derailleur and why do people believe they need drop bars for road riding. Tie in the pedals with either red valve covers or red bar tape
It gets a bit hazy when using road friction shifters with mountain bike derailleurs, so I didn’t put the misinformation out there. The 10 speed Hardrock in my other video didn’t quite work out, out of the box, with the friction shifter (which was a 10 speed road bar end item). But mounting the cable on the opposite side of the derailleur pinch bolt gave it that extra cable pull needed. The 10 speed friction shifter only selected 8 of the 10 gears. As for bars, it’s just preference. Yeah I do mention the decal/pedal/bartape thing in the video. But it’s pinky/purple in person, so will probably do pink bartape when the bike comes back to me👌

You changed it completely! Wow!
I've never seen shifters like that before. Super nifty

Nice build, I have exactly the same Rockhopper in that colour. I have some spare drop bars too with 3x7 Sora shifters, you've inspired me!
Great build man, love the finished bike!
Thank you!! 🤙
Sweet build 🎉🎊🔥🔥🔥
Thank you 🙌💖
Sick work man, you nailed it
Cheers heaps!! 🤙 glad you liked the video and the build result 👍
Loving your builds and videos bro! Love from Melbourne.
Cheers bro!! Glad you’re liking the videos 🤙😁
I want to build one with a BMX-bar. I loved the first version of your Giant Yukon.
Thanks! Yeah I still have that bar, too 😎👌 I’ll be using it on a build in the future
@@toastyrides Cant wait for that video :)
lol i did the same trick when the bolt broke off my crank arm too. geniuses.
Nice I got this exact frame and an older red one. Red one was my first bike.
Rad!! Awesome that you still have your first bike 👌send some photos sometime if you can, easiest through Instagram if you have it 👍
@@toastyrides yeah sent it to you

Fair enough 🤙 I prefer cantis, they are plenty strong enough with Koolstop pads.
Nice one 😉👍🌻
Your videos are awesome!
Thanks heaps! 😄🙌
If you want 3x7 road brifters, look for the old Shimano RX100 ones, or the 105 ST-1055. Those were set up with 3 positions in the front.

I just picked up another bike that has them on!haha
Thanks heaps!! 😁🥳
...Fyi..... a little heat from a torch or heat gun will help a lot when dealing with rusty components.....

Another nice build and video. I'd like to do a drop bar conversion on one of mine but like you commented I'm afraid the reach would be too much.
Cheers mate! Yeah it extends out quite a bit farther, especially when on the hoods!

Hi which dimension is the drop bar? I mean the diameter I find hard to fit these shifters on standard drop bars. Thanks
Would these be the same tools used for a 1991 rockhopper comp? If so do you mind listing, please. Tia
What size rockhopper do you recommend for some around 5’10-6’0

No, that gauge you use to set the angle of the cables.
@@MrDVCHITTer oh it’s just a square 🤙
what do you use to polish out the frame?
Just some car polish does well 🤙 turtle wax, just a cream polish so it’s not too abrasive. It’ll restore the shine nicely!
I had same bike but in Mountain form
These Tourney "butterfly" shifter look absolutely horrible. For 3x7 you should have used the good Shimano SL-M735 thumb shifters.

I would rather build up a old steel frame for gravel/XC riding than buy new. 3X7 is perfect.
Definitely, saves heeeps of money 👌 and 3x7 gives heaps of range and with a few benefits, too! Just isn’t “in trend” with most consumers haha
Just bought a 2004 rockhopper today for 🇦🇺 $90. Paint is ordinary but otherwise good nick.
Nice!! Good find 👌
@@toastyrides I like the GT outpost you did with front rack. Thinking of doing similar with GT palomar but want to replace shock with rigid fork.
Want.
I will never understand the concept of 'gravel bike'. Ride a trail, use a mountain bike. Road bikes, stay on the road.
Many rural areas actually have gravel (unpaved) roads.
