Shiren lacks the popularity due in part to the fact that only 3 of the 5 entries were released outside Japan, and the MD "sub-genre" is already niche to begin with. There's also the issue of lacking characters to get attached to aside from Shiren's spokesperson, Koppa. These games are about the hardcore gameplay as opposed to story or presentation. I've played Shiren 5, though, and it's one of those rare JRPGs I go back to over and over for the gameplay mechanics, as my all-time favorite game is a MD game (Explorers of Sky). As a genre, I think MD has loads of potential. It's like a tactics game that feels more like a traditional JRPG, and I adore it. I have plans to design my own MD game in the future, and I'll for sure be drawing a lot of inspiration from Shiren.
JRPG that noone talks about - Infinite Space for Nintendo DS by Platinum Games. This game is Mass Effect meets Suikoden meets visual novel. It's such a hidden gem. My favourite DS game

Little fun fact about Mana Khemia 2's music: those iconic rifts from the battle themes are the product of the guitarist of the band Saitama Saisyu Heiki, or SSH, Toshinori Hiramatsu. That band got the attention of Ken Nakagawa, the composer of Gust's games at the time, because they made some kickass covers of the music of Atelier Iris 1 and 2 (my personal favorites: Duke of Stratosphere Ver. 0, and Red Lucifer Rising, check them, you'll love them). IMO, the true final boss theme of Mana Khemia 2, Namenloses Licht has an instrumental version where that godly guitarist plays with his guitar the lyrics part, and BOY is it So. Damn. AWESOME. Hiramatsu also worked as guitarist for the sound tracks of Memories of Celceta and Trails of Cold Steel. Really glad you love Mana Khemia 2's music, I'm a fan of SSH, and I'm happy to share with you that track I mentioned: ua-cam.com/video/fp90aiDhS0Y/v-deo.html Talk more about them games, Eric, please!
Ah, Mana Khemia 2. One of those rare RPGs that's almost entirely comedy, and pulls it off without a hitch. It's an absolute riot to play. Highly recommended.

Indeed. Good games and few people ever talk about them. I almost never heard anyone speak of Lost Sphear. It's all about Octopath Traveler. Lost Sphear is far and away the better total game though. The only time people talk about Twilight of the Spirits is when they say how good it is when they trash End of Darkness. But they never really talk about the game itself. I'm starting to think that almost nobody knows Command Mission even exists. Mega Man X based JRPG also on the Gamecube. Baten Kaitos, Paper Mario, Skies of Arcadia Legends and Pokemon Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness get all the love when it comes to the Gamecube. Last time I heard anything about MS Saga was to say how expensive it is. To think that Metal Saga was the game that everyone went after back then. MS Saga has a real good mix of challenge and fun. Plus you can make the most ridiculous looking mobile suits as if they were Medabots. People trash The Falsebound Kingdom the few times it is talked about but I love the game for some reason. Duelist of the Roses gets talked about quite a bit though. Capsule Monster Colosseum does too for that matter. Or any of the handheld games. Or Forbidden Memories. Attack of the Saiyans was expensive but that's about it. I like how it covers material from Dragon Ball, even the filler episodes between it and the Z portion. The GBA games and even Sagas are the DBZ games that get talked about most other than the Budokai, Kakarot and Xenoverse games. Robopon in general never gets any love but when people do mention it, it's about the first game and not about the much better second games. The first game used to wake me up sometimes when it made the time changing noise as the actual game cart had a built in speaker and battery just for it. Dawn and Dusk only ever come up when people make fun of the names for Pokemon Sun and Moon. The Third Age is actually the only game I listed I never beat. And I never even played the handheld SRPG version. You'd think a Final Fantasy 10 style game that was also on the Gamecube would get some more attention. Inuyasha was pretty fun but I get why people rarely talk about this one. I enjoyed having the whole cast in the part fighting battles at once. I just needed one more to put on the list though and this is what came to mind. I was going to put Final Fantasy VI on the list as a joke but decided against it.
I played the hell out of Mana Khemia 1 and 2 on my ps3 that was backward compatible. Only bad thing, I would get super far, get so many items, and the saves would vanish! Happened over 2x per game! Never ended up beating them but I found myself wanting a modern version

I remember a friend telling me about some of the games on the list, I wanted to play them at some point, but I quickly forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder, this is a great list.
I’d say Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, not because it is not well-know, but because it is a game that stays in its ‘niche’ , and in fact is a very fun RPG

Front Mission 3 is an amazing game. I really recommend it despite the fact that the protagonist is a complete spaz. He is so over the top ridiculous and yet, the game is still incredible.
Front Mission 3 is my favourite TRPG before Fire Emblem 3 Houses (each on its own time). The story is mature and compelling, the battle system and overall development of your characters and mechs is also great. Also as you mentioned there are 2 completely different path to take and they split very early, although it's based on a random decision that you wouldn't know it has so many consequences unfortunately.
You literally took the two worst entries of each series and showcase them. Front Mission 1 is the best Front Mission (3 has minimal strategy with only 4 playable characters) Fire Emblem has also gone downhill since Awakening.
I remember going through the Bleach Blue Phantom RPG and finding out you could get Bankai for your main character if you made certain decisions. It made the game a lot of fun. I'd recommend playing the Japanese rom with the english patch.
Nostalgia on the DS. An awesome RPG set on Earth during the Age of Exploration with a story that takes you all over the globe from real world cities like London to mythical locations such as Eldorado with the help of your trusty airship and a trio of new friends you gather fairly early on. Search for the truth of the disappearance of the main character's father, and why a sinister cabal is so interested in the mysterious girl accompanying you. Party is fairly standard with the sword wielding noble, holy magic using priestess, gunslinger rogue, and elemental magic using witch characters. With plenty of flashy attacks as you progress in the story including full team attacks.
Love Front Mission 3, played through it 5 times so far and i still think i haven't found all the secrets on its web, which by the way is something rarely gets mentioned, huge world building.

When OG was released in the west they just used the original name SRT. As for characters they where already exciting characters from the SRW series. As for story well I don't want to make it long but the OG is following the SRW Alpha storyline.

Oh wow, this brings back childhood memories. I remember taking notes on Bleach the 3rd Phantom from Shounen Jump Magazine coverage at the time but I couldn't find the game until a few years later at a used game store. Played through it, like, three times at least. Then Shiren the Wanderer for Wii... I sucked at that game but the closest thing I had played to it before was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, one of the few Wii games I enjoyed. Then Mana Khemia 2, I actually didn't realize there was a Mana Khemia game at all until I picked up a used copy! Never got through all of the endings but I remember drawing me and my friends like the characters in the game but no one knew what the game was!!
I think Super Robot would have been better received in the West if they ported the ps2 version of Super Robot Wars OG. I saw videos of that back in the day and that BLEW ME AWAY. Luckily most SRW games are not region locked and the various international versions come with serviceable english translations
Tales of Eternia. It was released two years into the PS2's life cycle in the west, when most people were already done with the PS1. It's an excellent Tales game, one of the best in my opinion; but few people gave it a fair shot when it was originally released.
Only one of these I've ever played is Witch & The Hundred Knight, which I really enjoyed. One series I loved that seems to be forgotten is Shadow Hearts. Those were great games on PS2.
I'm one of the lucky few who bought the PSP and played Brave Story, It became one of my fav games , and it's a shame they never published the game on anything other then the PSP
The good thing about this video is that the games mentioned seem interesting. Bad news is that used game prices are inflated that getting some of them physically would put a hole in my wallet after looking some of them up on ebay :(
Well, nobody talks about FM3, because it was quite the popular game back in the day. I don't expect anyone to discuss it now, of course, with the plethora of jRPGs.
No one talks about... and here I with my Vita and 100+ hours on Front Mission 3 and Saiyuki. Played them on PS1, but on Vita today they are really good. Played almost all games, exept for Bleach (don't like verse), Taisen. As for every other games: I think they can be considered niche games that have there own fanbases, but as niche games not very big. For examples can name ib and Corpse Party (they are not rpg's) - interesting games, with good story, music and development... but niche. In the end, those games are good, some are very goo and it's worth playing. Saiyuki is still in top 3 of my favourite TRPG on PS1 (played almost all of them) with great Intro (Ryorin is still great).
The irony! I just got my PS2 back from the repair shop (I hadn't used it in many years and the laser had gone bad) and the first thing I wanted to do was replay Dual Hearts! Except I'm going to 100% it this time, I never did that as a kid (not gonna lie though, using a guide to help me out). Doesn't help it was released in the US 6 days after Kingdom Hearts 1!
Destiny of an Emperor (NES) should be at your top spot. No one talks about that game. It got a sequel that was released only in Japan. I think it is Capcom's first SRPG/JRPG.
These all look like awesome RPGs! I personally think that Breath of Fire 3 & 4 don't get talked about enough, and these are even more obscure. Too bad my backlog is longer than a bill that just got out of committee
Well, tbh, i finished the mana khemia 2 back in the day, but i didnt finish Ulrika's (the girl ) route... Later in my life at the time, i've found out that ya need to do them both to unlock the true ending of the story, not just one...
ahh front mission 3 and why do i have have on my psx emu must be love..also also saiyuki is hell of a game, also also super robot teissen DANG!! btw try covering hoshigami that game is hard as F...

I thought Radiata Stories would be included. I don't hear much of anyone mentioning it. I freaking loved that game. I wish there was a sequel.
I would add Witch's Tale and Shadow Madness to the list.
Shadow Madness is an incredible game.
I think I might wanna try Saiyuki
Is golden sun doesnt count..? Love those games especially the lost age
I think Super Robot would have been better received in the West if they ported the ps2 version of Super Robot Wars OG. I saw videos of that back in the day and that BLEW ME AWAY. Luckily most SRW games are not region locked and the various international versions come with serviceable english translations
Eternal Sonata is a rpg I really feel like doesn’t get enough love or shoutouts. These are all great games too!
I remember mana khemia 2 now that I think about on the top my head where was the mana stones I could never craft Raze final weapon without it
Tales of Eternia. It was released two years into the PS2's life cycle in the west, when most people were already done with the PS1. It's an excellent Tales game, one of the best in my opinion; but few people gave it a fair shot when it was originally released.
6:15 just Dragon Ball. People forget DBZ is the second part of the anime/manga and it all started with Kid Goku meeting Bulma.
Only one of these I've ever played is Witch & The Hundred Knight, which I really enjoyed. One series I loved that seems to be forgotten is Shadow Hearts. Those were great games on PS2.
My 2 favorite all time rpgs are Persona 4 and Mana Khemia 2! 🤘🤘
I know you've talked about it before probably but I'm still stoked on Shining Force. I had that on Game Gear
Folklore is a great game and one of my favorite games on the PS3. I hope more people get into it one day.
Thanks for the video. I did not know that these games existed.
I regularly talk about most of these games with people. Admittedly there is one I haven't played and one I haven't heard of.
May I add the brilliant game I really enjoyed on ps3 called Trinity Universe. I hear about that one less than some of these even.
This, I love this game, very innovative. Plus tons of mods for it if you play on an emulator
What game in the thumbnail?
Ara Fell is a masterpiece modern take on classic JRPG, definitely try it
I love this videos brooo
These all look like awesome RPGs! I personally think that Breath of Fire 3 & 4 don't get talked about enough, and these are even more obscure. Too bad my backlog is longer than a bill that just got out of committee
the Ar Tonelico trilogy will always be my favorite NIS america JRPG
Well, tbh, i finished the mana khemia 2 back in the day, but i didnt finish Ulrika's (the girl ) route...
Later in my life at the time, i've found out that ya need to do them both to unlock the true ending of the story, not just one...
ahh front mission 3 and why do i have have on my psx emu must be love..also also saiyuki is hell of a game, also also super robot teissen DANG!! btw try covering hoshigami that game is hard as F...
No one talks about Front Mission 3?! Nah it was quite popular to SRPG fans including myself back in 1998 when it was released in Playstation.
Ever played Radiata Stories on the PS2?
where's the smt v review?
