This song debuted on Billboard's Hot Country singles chart on 11/04/1972. It stayed on the charts for 16 weeks and peaked at #5, being the highest position he ever made. Between May of 1972 and October of 1981, there were a total of 23 charted songs. He sadly passed away on his 40th birthday. Thanks Don for starting this channel. I'm a huge fan of the old classic country music... I once had a huge collection of vinyl back from the mid-70's all the way up to the early 2000's... (LP's and 45's.) I got very few left. I do have a pretty good library of CD's... the only new country artists that I listen to are Mo Pitney, Teea Goans, Mandy Barnett and a couple of others.
I love hearing old Country songs l dont remember or didn't hear. I'm 61 & still discovering songs of singers l know only a few hits by. Still learning about Classic Country Music😊. The well is a deep one & takes a life time to discover
Thanks Don! What a treat! I haven’t heard this song for 15 years. To me, that’s a big problem. This excellent old true country songs are just not played anymore! Anywhere! But on your channel.
This is a great song by Mel, you really need to listen to a song called "THE TOWN WHERE YOU LIVE" another great song from Mel!! be listening for it. Thanks
I had heard his name and looking at his songs, I know a few but I couldn't say if I know them by him or someone else. I like his voice and style of singing though.
Grew up on the songs and they were so true to me but 😭 to mel is a good one to hear. Hey Don do more of them from MelStreet all are perfect.👍 You may have already done his I met a friend of yours today but for me it's a perfect 9.9+ give it a try if you have not did it yet 👍.
Mel was great. Such a shame he took his own life. It seems like some of the most talented people have the most tortured souls. BTW: Did you say this blew your doors off or blew your drawers off??? ROFL
King Malachi Street was my LOVE , we met in 1974 and he was killed in 1979.. Let me tell you this song had no significant meaning to "Mel". Only a few of his songs had personal significance.. This song did NOT !!!
Mel Street and Gary Stewart were two of the most brilliant and tortured souls …….
If there's anything I've learned is If Mel Street wrote a song it would be sad and very well written. Mel was gone entirely too soon
Thanks for playing this one , Mel was a sad soul ,saw him back in the day in Knoxville ,Borrowed angel was another of his greats , Take care Don
Yes Sir, and Mo Pitney did a great cover of that one.
@@jh5869 actually even though I liked Mel I think Mo's version was much better Really enjoy MO
@@gloriashaeffer9117 I understand. MO’s a great artist.
I met a friend of yours today and Smokey mountain memories.
When I used to run the bars that was my go to song on the Juke Box but glad you liked it
This really grabs you. What a song, a 10 indeed. Mel was co-author, released in 1972. Thanks again Don, I hadn't heard this one before.

Mel was a legend in his own time ❤❤
wow, nice intro, stell guitar ❤️
Very nice song... ❤️ +
As Dale Watson said - Mel Street, what a great actor! Of course he was being a smartass, but there is a lot of truth in that.

Mel was NOT a sad soul... He was happy and a good man .... Fans didn't know Mel but they like to think they knew him.

R.I.P. King Malachi Street AKA Mel Street.
Play I got a think in problem. David Ball
I have a suggestion if you haven’t already done it. Rhonda Vincent’s “When the Grass Grows Over Me.”

Borrowed angel was another great song by Mel.
Jeanne Pruett - Please Sing Satin Sheets For Me - its a follow up to the original
he had such a sad ending, he commited suicide on his 45th birthday :(
If I Had A Cheatin Heart by Mel was also a good one.
I met a friend of yours today was another good one.
Mel was famous for cheating songs, Borrowed Angel, I Met A Friend Of Yours Today and Lovin On Back Streets.
Mel Street never recorded a song that wasn't full of passion and pain.
That was an abbreviated version with a verse left out ua-cam.com/video/J0qaH58XnRU/v-deo.html
Mel Street, haven't thought of him in a long time. Pretty good singer. I believe that he committed suicide at a fairly young age.
Mel was great. Such a shame he took his own life. It seems like some of the most talented people have the most tortured souls. BTW: Did you say this blew your doors off or blew your drawers off??? ROFL
@Gary Guinn I’ll have to keep that a secret so I don’t get in trouble. ;-)
That is a great song Lovin on Backstreets has a great song it was just the one that you picked out was not the best
Mel got paid to sign and play country music... Mel did know how to sing with emotion but I assure you Mel didn't live his songs !!!!
King Malachi Street was my LOVE , we met in 1974 and he was killed in 1979..
Let me tell you this song had no significant meaning to "Mel". Only a few of his songs had personal significance..
This song did NOT !!!
Malachi was killed in 1978 not 79
It was Mel's job to sign and play country music and that is what he got paid for!!!! You people are making to much out of a song...
Sing and play country music
