- Quick and dirty iPhone video demonstrating this Bogen Challenger CHB-35A tube PA amp being used as a guitar amp. The amp's circuit (7868 power tubes) is unmodified - just added 1/4" jacks for guitar in and speaker out. With the bass low and treble high, it makes for a nice, clean, stout-sounding guitar amp. These tube PA heads, and others like them, can be found fairly inexpensively.
I'm playing a recently acquired late-90s Dearmond Starfire with Goldtone pickups, through an Xotic SP comp, Menatone Fish Factory, Line 6 M5 (tremolo), Seymour Duncan Deja Vu delay, an EHX Freeze (the drone sound), and finally plate reverb from a TC Electronics Hall of Fame.
This is a gorgeous tone!
thanks! very kind.
that's a fantastic tone! Nice pairing with the Dearmonds brighter humbuckers. What type of cab are you using?
nevermind the question, I watched a second time and caught it. Man, beautiful tone though. Makes me want to get into one. Whats the speaker impedance?
It's some homebrew thing - I bought it off craigslist unloaded for like $50, but seems to be solid pine. It's got a Celestion G12 V-type in it. Great speaker.
Great tone! Have you been able to compare the DeArmond with a Guild Starfire? Based off of this and other videos, I like the Goldtones, but I'm still wondering, how is the guitar itself?
The guitar is so well made. I think I paid $350 for it (hard to find them that cheap now). I really like the goldtones, and I'm not generally a humbucker guy. I've played the newer chinese-made guild starfires - they're pretty good too but I wouldn't trade my DeArmond for one. Never had a chance to play an OLD Guild tho.
You've encourage me to start on my bogen project, but I don't see these as single coil amps they only like humbukers
I know what you mean - it's a LOUD amp, and to get it spanky enough for me, I have to pretty much turn the treble all the way up, and turn the bass down pretty far. It definitely likes the higher output of 'buckers, and takes pedals really well.
Take that scratch plate off they look so much sexier. I have one in natural.
Ooh, that's not a bad idea. thanks! Although I do like that weird stair-step design...
Speaking in tongues to me? lol
