One of my old high school teachers had one of these back in the late 80s (rollcage and stripped out) I didn't even know what it was until my better car educated mate told me all about it. These are really cool cars and i bet its a really fun thing to drive. You see these quite regular on a hillclimb channel i watch (European hillclimbs) Very nice and never a common sight even going back 30+ years. Love it!
Just some rally history for you. It didn’t win the world rally championship, it won a few tarmac events, because the Audi Quattro was introduced around the same time and trounced the field. I understand that the R5T1 was Renaults attempt to wrestle back the WRC from the Lancia Stratos. The car was originally homologated into group 4 and then the 1st evolution into Group B with the final iteration being the Maxi Turbo in the Phillips color scheme which won the tour de corse outright. I own a 1985 Red one which is a low mileage survivor car. Production numbers for the Turbo 1 were around 1800 and 3000 ish for the Turbo 2. Great cars to drive the handling is amazing for an 80’s car and as you guys said extremely civilized. Can you think of another production car where the manufacturer moved the location of the engine and then built more than the minimum required for homologation like the Renault 5 Turbo.
When I was young I owned a 1978 Chevrolet Caprice Classic with a beefed up tuned 8 cylinder big block. This was very rare in The Netherlands(Europe). The automatic gearbox was altered with a, if I remember right, adaption: "kick shift". It used gasoline like crazy but it was crazy fast. It was not about power but about getting it to the road without burning too much rubber. At traffic lights I was always trying to compete with guys my age owning Golf GTI and fast BMW 3 series cars. I always won with ease from those cars. Then one day my arrogant self challenged a little renault 5 which was next to me at the traffic lights and looked very race car. The guy smiled at me and when the light turned green the R5 speeded away so fast it become a dot in front of me in no time. I was so very much impressed and remember I never heard his tires when it sped up. I have no idea what kind of R5 it was, but it was incredible fast. I always thought it must have been a 4 wheel drive to gain speed that fast but I have no idea if that even existed back then. Some one told me it could have been a renault 5 turbo with middle engine but I never saw one of those. Maybe someone here knows what the fastest road worthy R5 was? This all happened around 1986
Thanks guys takes me back to the 80's were I had an Uno Turbo which was fast but the brakes were awful, use to have fun going up against Renault 5 Turbos. This car is unique with all them fitted extras but still drives amazingly well.
Dont ask how but back in 1989 ended up racing My R5GTT phase 1 ,a pug 1.9gti and Uno turbo ie , all pretty same on initial traffic light gp but F++k me did the pug leave me and the uno on the twisty bits... For non-UK people who are wondering what a Renault 5 Gordini/turbo Gordini is, it's the British name of the R5 Alpine/Alpine Turbo. Renault couldn't use the name "Alpine" because it was the name of a Sunbeam model, and later the name of the (Simca) Chrysler1307/1308 and Talbot 1510. BTW, there are way more R5 Turbo 1 and 2 left than a couple hundred : this car has been produced at 5000 units by Renault and due to its value even wrecked ones have been rebuilt.
Looking forward to this one. Always remember a guy by me who had a white one of these and as a kid I would stop and stare everytime he drove by . I must of looked like some weirdo haha.
Lovely ,back in 89 a pal of mine had a turbo 2 1984 vintage I think lef hand drive as I think they only came ,lovely car ,not a fan of all the extras or that sunroof or the rhd conversion but never the Less a lovely car
Mine was white, and had a bored out 1.9 engine, which had been modified by Cosworth. I wish I had kept it, as if it still exists, it would be worth a fortune. Mine was annoying though; incredibly loud, backfired, pinking, coughs and weird whizzing noises, and because when I owned it I was 24, I looked about 14, so was constantly stopped by the rozzers.
My first car was a boggo 5, so one of these will always be in my dream garage lists. But right hand drive? Was that another of the ludicrously expensive modifications the original owner made? These were all left hand drive weren't they?

Sick car, I like the V6 Clio in the background too 👍👍
For non-UK people who are wondering what a Renault 5 Gordini/turbo Gordini is, it's the British name of the R5 Alpine/Alpine Turbo. Renault couldn't use the name "Alpine" because it was the name of a Sunbeam model, and later the name of the (Simca) Chrysler1307/1308 and Talbot 1510.
BTW, there are way more R5 Turbo 1 and 2 left than a couple hundred : this car has been produced at 5000 units by Renault and due to its value even wrecked ones have been rebuilt.
i'd like to see that bumper's light signature. these "crystal" turn signals behind the plexi work as daylights right? like the regular ones?
we want more episodes like this!!!
Love this car it would easily keep up with anything on the road today
Couldn't afford one back in the day. Had a mean little xr2 but these cars were something else.
Really cool that mate 👌👍🏻

Looking forward to this one. Always remember a guy by me who had a white one of these and as a kid I would stop and stare everytime he drove by . I must of looked like some weirdo haha.

The person who had all the work carried out on the car was a obvious Knight Rider fan.
Proper 80’s Rally Icon!

Love it 😍🤤
Can I see your licence please? Which one? TV or Driving?

Mine was white, and had a bored out 1.9 engine, which had been modified by Cosworth. I wish I had kept it, as if it still exists, it would be worth a fortune. Mine was annoying though; incredibly loud, backfired, pinking, coughs and weird whizzing noises, and because when I owned it I was 24, I looked about 14, so was constantly stopped by the rozzers.
Seen one on hillclimb monsters sliding and drifting its way up hairpins
Dimma who ??? superb..
Wot a lucky guy to own an icon wot a car absolute beauty 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The owner adores it, Stu and Owen have fallen for the turbo 2
My first car was a boggo 5, so one of these will always be in my dream garage lists. But right hand drive? Was that another of the ludicrously expensive modifications the original owner made? These were all left hand drive weren't they?
Er yes, you're absolutely right! Another mod from the original owner.
Would love to know if that cars local to me cause those roads certainly are 👍
Near Canterbury Kent
Come and see it if you're interested. It's for sale at the moment!
@@andrewberridge3924 out of my price range but would be awesome to see it all the same.
